Your Wingman Every little girl dreams of her wedding day and imagines herself dressed like a princess, the center of attention, the belle of the ball. Where does the bride look for her Fairy Godmother—the one who can make that dream turn in to reality? The name for that woman behind the magic wand is the wedding planner!

I recently had the opportunity to have breakfast with seven members of the St. Louis Wedding Planner Collaborative and got the inside scoop on what they

are powerhouses. They are organized, energetic and connected. Their enthusiasm for their careers was contagious. I left that interview thinking how fortunate brides-to-be are to have such an amazing group of professionals to choose from.

As Aaren Muex of Divine Events said, “Your wedding planner is your steady wingman!” I couldn’t agree more. To learn more about what a professional

wedding planner can do for you, check out “Wedding Planner Roundtable” beginning on page 114.

2 GRACE FREEMAN

Abbie Rudolph is the owner and Lead Photographer of Abbie Takes Pictures. Shooting over 250 weddings in her full-time 10+ year career, bridal images make her feel so alive! She loves to travel and was deeply inspired for this particular shoot by the beauty of the State of Oregon over her several trips there this past year. “This shoot was completely inspired by my love of travel and the beauty of the State of Oregon. Its deep green luscious ferns, its gorgeous mountains, its coastline. It’s all so breathtaking. I was so visually inspired by the landscape there that I was dreaming of an ‘Oregon’ travel-themed wedding and that’s where the story began.” This is Abbie’s fourth cover and editorial for Saint Louis Bride.

Enthusiastic. Spunky. Imaginative. Hungry. These are words that describe Grace on any given day. She’s a girl who appreciates both a sweet love story and a great party. Owner and Lead Coordinator of Saving Grace Occasions, Grace always says she has the best job in the world. She loves being entrusted by her clients to plan and oversee the first day of the rest of their lives together, and she doesn’t take that responsibility lightly. Grace strongly believes that love is love and was honored to showcase that with a beautiful, real-life couple for this shoot. This is Grace’s first contribution to Saint Louis Bride.

“Ashley and Moira are a real-life couple. It was an absolute pleasure photographing their chemistry and deep love for each other during this shoot. I was swooning at every turn that day!” –ABBIE RUDOLPH, ABBIE TAKES PICTURES

THE DRESSES: “Millie” by Anais Anette, $2,250 from Bridal Parlour; “Kaspar” by W-Too, $1,799 from Mia Grace Bridal; earrings from Francesca’s; 18k white gold diamond ring, $12,900 from Timekeepers THE WALL: “Our living wall was inspired by Abbie’s vision of Oregon’s lush green landscape. We sourced ferns, vines, and foliage in a wide variety of colors and textures for tons of depth and interest, to create a backdrop that felt like it was growing within the space.” — Silvia Dadian-Smith HAIR AND MAKEUP: “The hairstyles were inspired by a combination of the storyline, scenes and wardrobe. I’m a fan of all things classic romance but I like to add a contemporary flair. I thought about some power couples of the past like June and Johnny Cash, James Dean and Julie Harris and I thought about what they might look like today. Multiple hairstyle looks requires versatile product so my go to is Balmain Haircare. I used a combination of the texturizing salt spray, curl cream, session spray medium and shine wax.” —Carlos Gallegos “For Ashley and Moira’s makeup, I decided to add a little drama to their eyes to contrast their delicate gowns. I used a mix of warm browns and pinks to keep it feeling natural with the Huda Nude eyeshadow palette.” —Jordan Haller THE LOCATION: The Last Hotel

“Our whole day was personalized to reflect the combining of not only our two families, but also the two very distinct cultures that we grew up with. Being able to do both a Hindu and Catholic ceremony meant so much to us and our families, and each of our family cultures were blended in the reception in a way that allowed our guests to get a full sense of who we are as individuals, but also as a couple. It took a bit of work to make this all happen, but in the end our personal touches made the day feel exactly what we hoped it would be.” —HOW THEY PERSONALIZED THE EVENT

“My mother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in February of 2018 shortly after our engagement. She passed away in October of 2018 prior to our June 2019 wedding. My mother loved bees, so we included subtle touches of bees throughout the wedding. I had bee pins along the hem of my dress, our flower girls had bee pins on their dresses, our cake was adorned with a gold bee and a single bee graced the front of our wedding invitation as a reminder that she would be there for it all, even if not in person.” —HOW THEY PERSONALIZED THE EVENT

“Our theme was “Tale As Old As Time.” Beauty and the Beast has been one of my favorite movies since I was a very young girl. I walked down the aisle to a piano rendition of “Tale As Old As Time” and our centerpieces were made from a collection of old books, gold teapots, candlesticks, and mantle clocks my mom and I collected from online and antique stores. “Our colors were navy, gold and a touch of greenery. But we wanted the wedding to be very elegant, yet simplistic. We focused a lot on soft lighting and letting the venue space speak for itself. Up-lighting along the windows, hanging votives suspended throughout the room above the guest tables and dance floor and custom pendant lighting above the head table. Bride & Groom signature drinks and a rockstar DJ—we wanted our guests to have the time of their lives and not want to leave the dance floor and that’s exactly what happened.” —HOW THEY PERSONALIZED THE EVENT

Try not to overthink the decisions that are not on your short list to help minimize stress during the planning process. Also, trust the process. Everything that needs to get done will get done. “We wanted our wedding to reflect us so we really thought about that during our planning and thought about the little details. Our wedding favors were individual bud vases at each seat with a rose for everyone to take home and enjoy. My mother is an amazing florist and made all of my bridesmaids bouquets along with all of the centerpieces and arbor decor. It made it so special to us that she could be such a huge part of our day in every way possible and we will never forget when we walked into the reception and saw all of our dream wedding ideas come alive with our personal touches.” —HOW THEY PERSONALIZED THE EVENT

Real Moments Julia & Michael April 15, 2019 M. HART PHOTOGRAPHY

“I have a few! I really enjoyed our first look. As a wedding photographer myself, I’ve photographed many first look moments. As I was approaching my fiance, with his back to me, I intended to tap him on the shoulder to tell him to turn around, but when I got to him, on an impulse, I pinched his tush instead! It broke our nerves immediately, he laughed and then turned around to see me for the first time. He cried, I got a little misty myself, and it was just a really nice moment for just us. I also really loved sharing our vows we wrote ourselves. I enjoyed writing them; it was nice sitting down and really thinking through what I was promising him. I really loved my dance with my dad—we both bawled the whole time! And finally, at the end of the night, my husband and I and some of our guests jumped into the venue’s heated swimming pool and hung out after the party ended!” —BRIDE’S MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT

“To honor Alex’s family, we included a Chinese tea ceremony in traditional dress, including gold jewelry gifted to me by his mother. My mother’s family is German, so we served a traditional dessert called wedding kuchen. I also wore my grandma’s wedding set on my right hand, and we danced to my late grandparents’ favorite waltz in their memory. We surprised our guests with Chinese lion dancers—meant to bring good luck and fortune. We ended the evening with sweets including cream cheese mints that my mom and I made using my grandma’s recipe, and wedding cake with a custom cake topper featuring us and our two cats—Alex insisted the kitties attend the wedding!” —HOW THEY PERSONALIZED THE EVENT

TILIZING VARIOUS bright and

bold colors and creating the illusion of them running together like a

watercolor painting was Rachel Brueggeman of Main Street Abbey's design inspiration. Corals, pinks and peaches were scattered throughout most of the design from the flowers to the lighting to the signature cocktails. The lighting changes throughout the room helped transform the space from a cheerful, daytime ceremony to a dramatic, evening reception. 106

Five Decisions to Make in the First 60 Days Put these things at the top of your priority list

CONGRATULATIONS! You’re engaged! After the excitement of telling family and friends, sending pics of the ring (and insuring it!), you likely have lots of ideas swirling around your brain about your big day and you want to hit the ground running. But some brides are so excited to commence with the planning that they may buy something or sign a contract without thinking it through. One example Tiffany Butler, of Style Couture Events by Tiffany, has seen is brides buying a dress before doing anything else. “Choosing a dress is

an emotional decision, and a fun one,” Butler said. “But saying yes to a dress before setting a budget, and picking a wedding style and a venue can be a mistake. You should create an overall vision first. Some of my clients have ended up with two dresses, and that’s money they could have spent on something else.” So what should you do first? Before you head to the bridal salon or put down a non-refundable deposit, consider putting these five to-dos at the top of your list: (Continued on page 185)

Things Remembered Sometimes the little moments are the ones guests remember most

EACH YEAR in the United States, about 2.4 million couples get married. That adds up to tens of millions of wedding guests. What will your guests be talking about when they leave your reception, or maybe even years later? It’s not always the most expensive or extravagant element that stands out, but often the smaller, creative and more touching moments. Here, some seasoned guests share a few of the their most memorable moments.

Tissue, Please! Weddings are an emotional occasion, but sometimes the most touching moments are the unexpected ones. Lisa Dillon will always remember a particular part of her cousin Ashley’s ceremony. Ashley has a seven-yearold daughter, and it was the vows between Lexi and her dad-to-be that brought down the house. “Matt said some special vows about how he couldn’t wait to be her dad, as he gave her a necklace,” Lisa said. “Lexi planned her own vows to Matt, too, like promising to laugh at his jokes, even the ones that weren’t funny. It was very sweet and special to see

how much they loved each other and were excited about being a family. Everyone was crying!” One groom was surprised, along with everyone else at the reception, when the bride sang to him. The bride sang “L-O-V-E” the Nat King Cole song that begins “L is for the way you look at me…” Susan Clark and all the guests were very touched. “The bride had a great voice and it was so cute and romantic,” Susan said. Another memorable music moment wasn’t exactly romantic, but definitely entertaining. Wedding guest Amy Cavato remembers: “We were at the wedding reception for my husband’s nephew, and one of the groom’s brothers had a little surprise. The brothers and their siblings loved the movie Napoleon Dynamite when they were younger. So Brendan arranged to have the DJ play the song Napoleon danced to in the big final scene, and Brendan did the entire dance to it, exactly like Napoleon, just like he used to for his brothers and sisters when he was a kid. It was a great surprise for the groom and his family, and hilarious to everyone else watching.” (Continued on page 187)

WEDDING PLANNING ROUNDTABLE Some of the area’s most experienced and talented Wedding Planners answer brides’ most-asked questions

WHAT IS THE WEDDING PLANNING COLLABORATIVE?

Tiffany Halkitis, Events Luxe, LLC: In the most basic sense, the Wedding Planner Collaborative is a group of experienced professional St. Louis planners who hold each other up to high standards and maintain a “collaboration over competition” mindset to strengthen the St Louis market and bring the best service possible to local couples. We have all owned and operated our businesses for at least 5 years (many of us are past 10 years!) and have collectively done thousands of weddings. We know the best venues and vendors in town, and we have seen and done it all. Nothing makes us happier than providing the best service to people in love and making ourselves better every single year. 2. HOW MUCH DOES A WEDDING PLANNER COST?

Emily Gavilsky, Emily Anna Events: A wedding planner's cost vary based on the level of service For event management/month of, a professional, experienced planner in our region, a couple can expect service fees to range between $2,000-$10,000. Allisa Reimer: Altar'd Events: The investment associated with planning services can vary, however, couples can expect to allocate at least 10% of their budget to planning and coordination. While a number of factors can affect the associated fees, three main elements generally apply: level of support provided, scope of event and level of experience of the planning company. 3. WHAT LEVELS OF SERVICE DO MOST WEDDING PLANNERS OFFER?

Brandy Sheehan, St. Louis Wedding Consultants:

Wedding Planner Collaborative members attending a breakfast roundtable at Palladium Saint Louis

There are several levels of service offered by most planners. Event Management, previously referred to as Day Of Coordination, is usually the base package. Typically, this includes a meeting, creation of the timeline, vendor confirmation, and execution of the wedding day. Full Planning and Event Design would be for the bride wanting assistance from beginning to end with every aspect of the day. Partial Planning options are often customized based on needs of the client. In addition, there are destination services if you are looking for a planner to facilitate your event in another city. Kate Turner, Kate + Company: Commonly people use four descriptions when discussing levels of services in wedding planning: Day of Coordination, Partial Planning, Full Planning and Design Services. We’ll start out by busting a myth — DAY OF PLANNERS DON’T EXIST! You heard me correctly, a Day of Coordinator is not a thing. Do you truly want someone showing up on the day of one of life’s most important moments having not done any leg work? Having not consulted on your timeline? Having not confirmed things with your vendors? Trust me, you want them to do some work ahead of time, to review contracts, to consult on your timeline. If you want your wedding day to be flawless, work in advance is required. Most couples would call this “Day of Planner” but the industry professionals refer to it as “Management”. To us this means you might need us to consult at the 30,000 foot view of the day but you’ll handle the details, vendor selections, and bulk of the process. Partial Planning is commonly used for clients who need a bit more than management. This would be for a couple who feels comfortable

booking some of their event professionals but might need guidance in booking others. Most planners limit the number of hours or services within this package, allowing the couple to customize to their needs and expectations. Full Service planning means a consultant is involved in every aspect of your wedding day from selecting vendors to answering questions those partners might have, and even be on-site to receive deliveries, setup the event, and oversee clean up as needed. In this level of service, typically, no question is off-limits and no detail is left out. Design Services is typically added to an existing package. This is where your stylist not only assists you with the vendor direction but also works alongside you to develop the overall look and theme of your wedding. They consult on colors, tabletop look, flowers, stationery, and all aspects of how the event looks. 4. MOST OF THE WEDDING HAS BEEN PLANNED ALREADY AND CONTRACTS SIGNED. DO I REALLY NEED A PLANNER?

Simcha Lourie, Simcha’s Events: Brides and grooms commit so much time, energy, and love into planning their wedding. After making that investment, you want the ability to be able to experience the day without worrying about the details. You want someone there to be able to guide you and to be your advocate so that you can be present in your wedding day moments as they unfold instead of being distracted by logistics. The best present you can give yourself for your wedding day is to hire an experienced planner who will look after your best interests and take care of all the little details so you can just enjoy. NSPIRED BY THE series, "Stranger Things," the design team wanted to create something edgy with a bright-colored twist— definitely a look outside of the traditional wedding box. From

the deep, rich color palette to the serious faces, they created their own upside down wedding world for the bride and groom. "We wanted this styled shoot to be very sleek but also edgy and dark with a classy twist," said photographer Courtney Guffey. Gold branches and candle pedestals accented the bright pink orchid florals and black velvet and lace linens throughout the tablescape and cake table. The bridesmaid wore a golden wired cuff instead of the traditional bouquet and the cake showed the contrasting dark and light of the supernatural and real worlds of Stranger Things.

or most newlyweds newlyweds, your honeymoon is the trip of a lifetime. It’s an adventure that mirrors the exciting journey you’ve just begun together. An extended trip away allows you plenty of time to enjoy one another and leave all the wedding stress behind. For other couples, you’re starting that same epic life adventure, but jetting off on a world-wide trip isn’t always realistic. A lengthy honeymoon can be expensive, especially after dropping some serious cash on a lavish wedding. But just because you can’t get away for a two-week vacation after all the wedding excitement doesn’t mean you can’t still have a truly memorable honeymoon experience. More and more newlyweds are opting to stay closer to home. Whether you are looking for something within driving distance or wanting to explore far flung places, we’ve got romantic picks for honeymoons both near and far.

Honeymoons

CHICAGO, IL Mike Schellhase from Travel Haus of St. Louis suggests Chicago as an ideal nearby honeymoon spot. “It’s an easy drive or quick plane ride from St. Louis with lots of great activities and a beach.” The Windy City is the perfect romantic getaway, far enough so you feel like you’re getting away but close enough for an easy trip. With world class museums, beautiful sprawling parks, delicious food and so much more, there is no shortage of special experiences for honeymooners. Enjoy a panoramic view of the Chicago skyline from the Skydeck at Willis Tower. Tour the Art Institute of Chicago, often voted Best Museum in the World, even rivaling The Met in New York and the Louvre in Paris. Catch a comedy show at Second City. (Laughing together is a great foundation for relationships!) Take a

stroll through one of the city’s gorgeous parks – Lincoln Park is a great way to explore the shores of Lake Michigan. And then there’s the food. Chicago is a mecca for amazing restaurants. With over 20 Michelin-rated restaurants and iconic deep-dish pizza joints, you’ve got a lot of options to choose from for a romantic dinner. Reserve your hotel room at The Drake. Comfort, elegance and luxury are at your fingertips in this stylish, upscale hotel. A deluxe lake-view room overlooks majestic Lake Michigan, making it the perfect backdrop for romance. Kick off the evening with a glass of champagne and spend it out on the town or in your room. Breakfast in bed the next morning will fuel you up to tackle shopping on the Magnificent Mile.

LAKE OF THE OZARKS, MO “Lake of the Ozarks is a popular honeymoon destination for a lot of St. Louis newlyweds,” says Schellhase. If you want to experience it all, the Lake Retreat Package at Camden on the Lake Resort is the perfect honeymoon option. Spend the night in a luxurious room with all the amenities you could ask for, take in some live music over dinner at the resort’s restaurant, H.Toad’s, indulge yourself at the tranquil Spa 54, then escape to your room for the night. This two-night package includes a luxury suite where a special package of champagne, chocolates, rose petals and a pocket size Kama Sutra will be waiting for you upon arrival. You’ll also receive credit for food and drinks and a 50-minute couples’ massage.

Beyond the hotel there is a delightful selection of top-notch wineries with gorgeous views that will add to the romance. Try a Dry Vignoles at Seven Springs. Enjoy a 100% Missouri Catawaba Bluff Blush at Shawnee Bluff. Unwind at Golden Rock with their Chimney Rock Chardonnay. Or head over to Sugarloaf Vineyard and rent a kayak after your tasting. Water views and sunsets make the perfect backdrop for an evening meal. Baxter’s Lakeside Grill offers authentic Americana fare like grilled steak, baby back ribs and fresh catch-of-the-day seafood. For something a little more casual, try the Ozark Burger from Dog Days topped with Bourbon BBQ, or Shady Gators serves up a delicious Cajun Crawfish Etouffe.

Honeymoons Couple on Palm Beach Cliffs overseeing the two beaches on the northern shores of Sydney, Australia.

AUSTRALIA If you’re taking that once-in-a-lifetime trip, Abbey Meyer, who works with Schellhase at Travel Haus of St. Louis, recommends Australia. And she’s speaking from personal experience – it’s where she and her husband took their honeymoon. She suggests allowing for a 10-day trip. “With the amount of travel it takes to get there and the jet-lag on top of that, you really can't do this part of the world for much less time than that.” They spent time exploring Cairns and Sydney, visiting famous landmarks like the Sydney Opera House. But she says her favorite part of the trip was a visit to Fitzroy Island, a secluded island off the coast of Cairns that has only one resort. “We spent three nights roaming the island together, swimming with giant sea turtles, snorkeling the great barrier reef at our leisure, dancing to the one-man band at the outdoor restaurant, taking shots with the staff after the bar closed each night and falling in love all over again.” Meyer drives home two major points when planning a honeymoon of this caliber. The first is to buy travel insurance. An unexpected event could delay your trip, and you don’t want to be out the money that you invested. She also stresses the importance of using an agent that is familiar with the destination. “Agents can’t be experts on everything and everywhere, but a good agent has resources to connect you to those people that are.”

SOUTH AFRICA And those connections that Meyer talks about were a great help with our final recommendation. Schellhase and Travel Haus connected us with the vendor they use for South African safari trips, Robin Mountain of Ntaba African Safaris. Mountain says, “So many people go with standard packages and have a hundred other people on their tour. For honeymoons, we want to deliver something intimate, unique and adventurous, a true “out of Africa” experience.” Africa has it all – iconic wildlife, epic landscapes, ancient wonders, and an incredible variety of cultures that have intrigued travelers for centuries. With Ntaba, you will experience Africa’s wildlife and the Big 5 – lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and the cape buffalo – on daily game drives in open Land Rovers with an experienced game ranger and tracker. This safe and secure experience also offers free time to relax by the pool, around the camp and lodge, or treat yourselves at a world class spa. Itineraries offer optional excursions in addition to the safari. Visit the vibrant city of Cape Town, the nearby penguin colonies at Boulders Beach, and Cape Point – the most southwestern point on the African continent. Tour the breathtaking and magnificent Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe – one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Experience a sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River. And add-on activities like zip lining, an elephant interaction experience and a helicopter ride over the falls are available as well. There is even a honeymoon registry that you can set up after you’ve finished your wedding registry. Ntaba helps to customize the ultimate safari honeymoon with recommendations based on exactly what you’re looking for. ♥

Organize the Perfect Rehearsal Dinner in 10 Easy Steps BY J AC K I E T U C K E R

1

LOCK DOWN THE DATE AND TIME Traditionally, the wedding rehearsal and dinner are held the evening before the wedding. Since most weddings are typically on Saturday, this makes Friday night the perfect choice. Just make sure to schedule it so that the wedding party has time to get off work and make it to the venue without the stress of rushing.

alone in their hotel room. It could make for a fun-filled rehearsal dinner party!

4

PICK A THEME Who says you have to stick to a restaurant? Why not have a seaside clambake or a barb-cue in the park? Have the dinner at a local winery or make it a fun night in a bowling alley. Focus the theme around the couple’s interests and backgrounds. This will make it a fun night for everyone and help take the edge off any pre-wedding stress.

5

DECORATE THE SPACE Before everyone arrives, put your own personal touch on the venue by incorporating details like a photograph display.

2

6

3

7

BOOK THE VENUE Whether it’s the reception hall at the church, a restaurant, or a fun, unique location, be sure to book the venue and make arrangements a few months in advance. CONSIDER THE GUEST LIST While the guest list for the rehearsal dinner is usually the wedding party and family members, consider inviting out of town guests who may otherwise be spending the evening

132

WWW.BRIDESTL.COM • SPRING/SUMMER 2020

INTRODUCE YOUR GUESTS Take a moment to introduce any loved ones who haven’t met. Try incorporating a fun icebreaker activity with the name cards. PROMOTE YOUR HASHTAG If you’re using a wedding hashtag for social media – which we recommend – share it now. It’s a great way for friends and family to post and find photos of your big day.

8

GIVE A TOAST It’s customary for the host of the rehearsal dinner (traditionally the groom’s parents) to greet everyone and give any necessary instructions. After the meal, the host can offer a toast to the couple then play emcee, passing the mic around for others who would like to say a few words.

9

OFFER THANK YOUS AND GIFTS The bride and groom should always give a public thank you to the host of the rehearsal dinner as well as to everyone who has come out for the occasion. The rehearsal dinner is also a good time to give out gifts to your wedding party. The wedding day will be busy and bustling. So, taking the time at the rehearsal dinner to offer gifts and appreciate the love and support of friends and family is a good idea.

10

LAST MINUTE FRIENDLY REMINDERS The rehearsal dinner is the perfect opportunity for the bride and groom (or, more likely, the wedding planner) to give any lastminute instructions or reminders about the wedding day. Make sure everyone knows when and where they are supposed to be and confirm any transportation or lodging arrangements for out of town guests. ♥

©L PHOTOGRAPHIE

TYPICALLY A MORE casual affair, the wedding rehearsal dinner can become a full-fledged event all its own. But no worries, we have ten easy steps to create a space where friends and family of both the bride and groom can enjoy a memorable, laid-back evening before the big day.

The Rehearsal Dinner of Jamie & Alex June 7, 2019 L PHOTOGRAPHIE

“Our rehearsal dinner "fiesta" was both a nod to my Mexican roots on my dad's side, and an opportunity to showcase a lot of fun, vibrant colors. The table settings used gorgeous cobalt blue tumblers and centerpieces with brighter versions of the pale peach, pink, and yellow used in our actual wedding flowers. Fun touches included papel picado (cut paper) banners featuring our names and wedding date, a custom-made wedding cake piñata, and both a sangria and margarita bar! We also had a mariachi band to serenade our guests as they arrived. It was a wonderful start to our wedding weekend.” —JAMIE

Beautiful BRIDES AT

Any Age Beauty tips for brides in their 30s, 40s and 50s BY A M Y Z I M M E R M A N

LIKE EVERY BRIDE, Hannah McAfoos wanted to look her best on her wedding day. As a woman who doesn’t typically wear a lot of makeup, she wanted advice from an expert. “I’m not one who wears a ton of makeup but I knew I wanted to look polished and natural on my wedding day. I found Lisa through a Google search. All the looks on her website were very polished,” says McAfoos. Lisa Lipsitz, the owner of Looks by Lisa & Co., is a bridal hair and makeup specialist. There was something else about her website that impressed McAfoos, a 38-year-old woman who was married on June 8, 2019. The brides featured in the photos were of varying ages, not just young women in their 20s but women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. “I’m in my 30s. I have stylists from age 25 to 55. I think that puts older brides at ease. They are meeting with someone who understands their needs firsthand,” says Lipsitz. Kathleen Lott, age 54, agrees. Lisa did Lott’s hair and makeup for her wedding on October 12, 2019. “I felt comfortable with Lisa because she is older and she understood where I was coming from with my concerns. From a makeup standpoint I wanted to look like me but a little more polished and a little more radiant. Like being in love is supposed to look,” says Lott. Carlos Gallegos, Creative Director with West End Creative, often collaborates with Lipsitz. When older brides ask for advice about trends or looks 136

their wedding day, he gives them an honest and thoughtful answer. “There is nothing trendier than being yourself. On your wedding day you don’t want to stray too far from your natural look, just take it up a few notches. Put a more formal twist on your regular style,” he says Over the age of 30, skin and hair change for women. What can older brides do to ensure they look their best? Lipsitz recommends focusing on the preparation. “Whether you are 20 or 60 years old makeup only looks as good as the skin beneath it so it is important to take care of yourself leading up to the wedding,” says Lipsitz. If you don’t already have a regular skincare regimen you should begin one prior to the wedding. Use high-quality products to clean, exfoliate, and hydrate skin. Eye creams and products containing hyaluronic acid help skin retain moisture and reduce redness and wrinkles. “Limiting exposure to the sun and using quality skincare products was already part of my routine,” says Lott. “Leading up to the wedding I focused on hydration, especially around my eyes, and used neck cream to keep my skin firm. I used natural products and gentle exfoliants regularly. I didn’t want to do something dramatic or out of my norm prior to my wedding that could potentially harm or dry my skin,” says Lott. Maintaining a healthy diet also helps with skin quality. A diet that includes antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables and healthy fats such as those found in fish helps keep your complexion clear and healthy. Drinking plenty of water helps rid the body of toxins and combats various skin issues. Getting enough rest, while often difficult with a wedding approaching, also helps maintain glowing skin. Lott paid particular attention to her arms and hands as well as her face. “People can look really young in the face but hands and arms tend to age quickly, especially from sun exposure. I researched moisturizers for hands and arms and found one I really liked. I applied it every morning for six months leading up to my wedding and it really made a difference in the texture of my skin,” says Lott. As the wedding date approaches, Lipsitz meets with her brides for a consultation and trial run two to three months prior to the wedding. “You don’t want to put it off too late because we want to have time to address any potential problems. It’s also best to meet when the weather is similar to what it will be like on your wedding day. Your skin and hair are much different in July than (Continued on page 190) SPRING/SUMMER 2020 • WWW.BRIDESTL.COM

Wedding Planning Roundtable 5. WHAT SHOULD A BRIDE LOOK FOR WHEN HIRING A WEDDING PLANNER?

Victoria Burrows, A Bride’s Ally: Not all wedding planners offer the same type of services, so the most important thing to do first is to get handle on what type and level of assistance you're looking for in a planner. Also, what are your expectations for what your relationship with your planner will look like throughout your planning process and on the wedding day? For example, are you primarily looking for a designer to create a detailed and cohesive look and feel for your day, or are you more interested in someone to help with vendor logistics and keep you organized? Do you want a planner who will be with you every step of the way, or are you interested in doing a lot the planning yourself and are looking more for a pro who will pull it all together in the end? When you interview planners, it's important to be clear about your needs and expectations. Just like any other profession, planners can have a wide variety of offerings, planning philosophies, and areas of expertise. Being as clear as possible about the type of assistance you need will help both of you decide if you'd be a good fit. Aaren Muex, Divine Events: Look for someone who is relatable – do you see yourself working with that person? Personality matters. Experience is important, too. An experienced planner can anticipate potential issues and how to solve them accordingly. 6. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PLANNER AND A DESIGNER? WHICH ONE DO I REALLY NEED?

Kristin Kennedy, Kristin Ashley Events: Mostly all stylist and designers would consider themselves a wedding planner (those who plan weddings However, not all wedding planners would consider themselves a designer. There are wedding planners in St. Louis that have a strong background in design and have utilized their skills through the wedding industry. Designers tend to take weddings to the next level, often times adding personalized elements to the overall look. Typically, a designer will plan a wedding several months in advance with the couple to get the aesthetics of the wedding. Often times the designer will tell a story from the beginning to the end of the day, leaving guests intrigued by all the little details. A bride can have lots of great ideas, however, they don’t know the vendors or resources to use to best fit their needs. Before meeting with a planner to discuss, first get a budget in mind and decide what that will include. Next, establish what will be important on allocating the budget. If you are unsure what kind of service you need, do your research, look at a few websites and social media sites and have a phone consultation. Finally, have

a one-on-one with the planner or designer. Not only do planners offer different services, we have different approaches to orchestrating your event! Ashlee Erlinger, Signed Sealed Delivered Events: Wedding designers create the overall vision of your wedding day, from linens to florals to lighting, lay out to stationery, assisting with menu planning and beyond. A wedding designer can bring your 42,000 pinned ideas together and make them make sense! They work closely with your florist, rental company, production company and caterer/venue to bring all these elements together cohesively to elevate the guest experience. When do you need a designer? When you want to create a specific aesthetic or ambiance for your wedding. When you want your guests to feel excitement from the minute that they receive your save-the-date or invitation, to being served a signature cocktail with personalized napkin and cleverly presented appetizer to ending the evening with a breathtaking firework display after dancing under the stars. All of this magic that communicates your “best day ever” is brought to life by a wedding designer. A wedding planner coordinates, manages and executes all the logistics on wedding day. A wedding planner works directly with your vendors to confirm details of your contracts and time line as well as offer you guidance and support during the planning process to make sure you stay on track. What’s really incredible is that we have planners here in St. Louis who specialize in wedding design, so you can have that creative ingenuity and planning all on one team! 7. WHAT ABOUT "DAY OF PLANNING?"

Allison McDonald, Flourish Events: Here's some breaking news: there's no such thing as a "day

of coordinator"! We're all too familiar with the phrase, but it's one that any planner would like to see disappear from the wedding vocabulary. The fact is that it doesn't come close to describing the scope of work that even the most basic planning service includes. At a minimum, we will be meeting with the couple four to six weeks in advance of the wedding to discuss timeline and vendor expectations. The interim is then spent crafting a timeline (based on first-hand experience of what will work best for a seamless and stressfree day) and contacting vendors to thoroughly discuss timeline and logistics. I know many of us also make ourselves available to answer questions or to be a listening ear during the weeks leading up to the wedding. Only then does a planner arrive on-site for the day prepared and ready to manage the event and troubleshoot any glitches or minor emergencies that might arise. It's like a complex jigsaw puzzle bringing all the pieces together into a day that flows smoothly and has good energy. You certainly don't want a planner that is trying to work all those pieces on the fly! So be aware of what you're asking when you inquire about a “Day Of” package. And if you happen to find a planner that is really only showing up as the prelude begins, run the other way! It will be a huge waste of budgeted wedding dollars and may end up making your day more stressful, not less! 8. MY CEREMONY/RECEPTION VENUE INCLUDES A PLANNER. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Simcha Lourie: The major difference is that your wedding planner is there for you and you are their first priority. For a venue planner, the venue is the first priority and the couple is the second priority. The venue coordinator will often times make suggestions with regard to overall timing that suits the venue’s best interests vs. their clients’ best interests. For example, cutting the cake. Many times, venue coordinators will recommend cutting the cake right when you are introduced into the room and not waiting until after guests have enjoyed their entrée. This recommendation is given so that the pastry kitchen can cut the cake early and not have to stick around until later in the evening. Additionally, your wedding planner will be running point for all of your vendors and family. The venue coordinator will be primarily focused on interactions with your vendors that directly impact the venue. Sabrina Torti: The difference is their employer. The venue coordinator works for the venue. Yes, you are the client and they do care about you having a great experience, but their work lies with the venue. They can recommend someone for transportation, photos and cake, but they don’t really plan those elements. They will talk with the (Continued on page 189)

Five Decisions (Continued from page 108)

1

HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER

If you do this one thing first, the rest of the list and everything that comes after will be MUCH easier. Having a wedding planner helps keeps you on track in making decisions when it makes sense to make them. Wedding planners are lifesavers if you don’t live in the St. Louis area but are getting married here, have a demanding job, have difficulty making choices or just want help from the experts. “A planner suggests all the vendors that are involved in the big day based not only on your budget, but on the overall scope of the day and personality of the couple,” said Callan Pratt-Piacentini, wedding and event planner and designer at Altar’d Events. They also often have personal, proven relationships with a lot of the vendors you’ll be interested in. “Locking in a planner you trust and who understands your overall vibe is key to a smooth and enjoyable planning process,” Pratt-Piacentini said.

taken to the hotel. The bus was supposed to essentially shuttle people back and forth to the hotel throughout the night, but I don’t think anyone took advantage of that. Considering it was so underused, transportation ended up being annoyingly expensive.”

3

DRAFT A GUEST LIST Closely related to budget is how many people you are planning on

inviting. “Since much of the pricing is on a per person basis, your budget discussion should include how many guests you think are really going to be there,” advised Butler. Newlywed Lauren Boyer knew she would have a summer wedding, since her fiancé was in medical school and this summer was the only free chunk of time he had for a wedding and a honeymoon. “The next thing we did was think about our families and friends and estimate how

2

SET A BUDGET AND ALLOCATE WITHIN IT

“Even before the ring, women usually have some ideas of what they want for their wedding,” said Tiffany Butler. “But budget should be a part of that preliminary research. Brides often don’t have a realistic expectation of how much things cost.” Perhaps you can blame it on Pinterest, says Allissa Reimer, owner and principal planner and designer at Altar’d Events. “Pinterest can serve as a great source of inspiration, but those gorgeous photos don’t show you the price of everything you are seeing.” It’s essential to set a realistic budget and then having an honest discussion about who is paying for what—the bride’s parents, the groom’s parents, the couple and anyone else involved in writing a check. “It’s not a fun conversation, but is crucial to avoiding more awkward situations later in the planning process,” Reimer said. Reimer also advises couples not to forget taxes, service fees, delivery and set-up charges, and gratuities when determining their budget. Once you have a budget, the next most important thing is dividing the funds within that budget. “No matter how small or big your budget, it still has to be broken down into how much money will be spent for each element of the wedding,” Reimer said. A wedding planner can help with that, by getting to know the couple and what their priorities are, and knowing real prices of those things. Looking back, Nikki Klapp realizes she overspent on transportation¬¬–she just bought more than her wedding day actually needed. “We got picked up and immediately taken to the venue and then picked up at the end and

Five Decisions many people we could invite. We tried to come up with a good, generous estimate, allowing for some wiggle room.”

4

LOCK DOWN YOUR OFFICIANT, CEREMONY AND VENUE

“Choice of venue is absolutely one of the first things to consider,” Pratt-Piacentini

said. “Not only do venues in the St. Louis area book up far in advance, but the venue also can set the tone for your big day. If it’s a more casual or outdoor venue there will be a different tone to the day than if you are in a historic building or ballroom.” If your ceremony is at a house of worship, reserving it and the officiant should be done in

tandem with the booking of the reception site, obviously. “It was really important to me and my family that the priest we grew up with be the one to marry us,” bride Michelle Fox said. “So checking his availability was one of the first things we did.” Maybe you’ve called around to various venues and some are booked, and you’re in a bit of a panic about availability. You may be tempted to secure the next place on the list without taking the whole wedding day into account, to have something on the date you want. Be very careful about committing financially to a spot until you are sure it’s what you want, fits into your budget, and all your guests will fit in the space. Another thing to consider is what is included and what choices you have (and don’t have) at a reception site. Wedding planner Pratt-Piacentini shared a cautionary tale: “We had a couple that had booked their venue right after they got engaged without doing much research, because they liked the space. What they didn’t think about was that the venue required a specific caterer that the couple was really unhappy with. In the end they wished they had looked around more and hired us before booking anything, so that they had an educated person on their side before making decisions.”

5

CHOOSE A PHOTOGRAPHER

“While we are incredibly lucky to have an amazing selection of photographers in the St. Louis area, they, too, tend to book up quickly,” said Pratt-Piacentini. “I would recommend looking in local magazines, blogs and on social media to see what type of photography you are drawn to and to get a general idea of your style. From there you can narrow down your options and begin to reach out about booking.” New bride Lauren Boyer loved the photos taken at a friend’s wedding—the fun, relaxed approach of the photographer, but also the beauty of the pictures in capturing the day and everyone involved. “I knew this \photographer was getting lots of referrals for her work, so I booked her right after booking our church and reception site,” Boyer said. It’s also a good idea to have an in-person meeting with the photographer, to not only see some of the wedding albums, but get to know each other a little and see if your personalities click. This person is going to document all your hard work on your big day, and it helps if you both feel comfortable and that it’s a good fit. Planning a wedding is an exciting, wonderful time, but the process can sometimes seem overwhelming. But check these five or so items off your list, and you are well on your way to creating the wedding of your dreams. ♥

Things Remembered (Continued from page 110) Even rehearsal dinners can leave guests with special memories. Bea Pollard and her brothers arranged for a favorite local performer to sing their deceased father’s favorite song at their younger brother’s rehearsal dinner. Then the singer rewrote the lyrics to a Dave Matthews song for her brother and his soon-to-be wife. “The Dave Matthews Band is by far Danny’s favorite band, and coincidentally they were in St. Louis on the same day as the wedding. The song was a way to bring Danny’s favorite band to them, and the lyrics were about Danny and Sarah as a couple,” Bea said. A rehearsal dinner that Susan Clark especially remembers turned out to be much more than a rehearsal. The groom’s family was from Iraq and of the Muslim faith, so a Muslim wedding ceremony took place at the dinner. “It was very touching and old-world,” recalled Susan. “It was important to the groom’s father and it was an intimate group of people, so we all were able to learn about the ceremony and tradition of another culture.”

from Hawaii, their five-year-old nephew performed their “real wedding” in front of immediate family, which they also posted on YouTube. It was a neat way to be part of their wedding without actually being there.” Susan Clark was at a wedding that was much lower-tech, but just as special. “My friend and her husband were married on her husband’s family ranch in a very small town. The pews

from the old church where the groom’s parents were married were moved to the ranch for the guests. It was an outdoor ceremony, with those pews placed right in the grass.” Observant wedding guests can be inspired to try something a little new when it’s time for their own big day. Suzanne Buescher really liked something she saw when the ceremony ended at a wedding she attended. “The bride

Sweet Touches Julie Hasting’s wedding featured a beautiful, classic, white wedding cake. But the groom’s cake was a true original—not a cake at all. Her husband-to-be, Jeff, had an artfully arranged tower of Little Debbie snack cakes (his favorite treat from childhood) for guests to pick up and enjoy throughout the reception. “Who knew a tower of Swiss Rolls, Cosmic Brownies, Honey Buns, Oatmeal Crème Pies, Devil Crème Cakes and Donut Sticks would look so attractive?” Julie laughed. “The guests loved it, and it was so totally Jeff.” Another unique sweet treat was one served at Amy Cavato’s wedding. “My greatgrandmother was an Italian immigrant and made these cookies for my grandpa and his brother when they were kids,” Amy said. “They were these iced cookies in the shape of an S. My grandma got the recipe from her before she died and would make them for special occasions. She made them for the reception, and we put them in little bags at each guest’s plate. It was a neat way to carry on a family tradition and my grandmother loved contributing in that way,” Amy said.

New Spins on Old Traditions The most unique wedding Edie Paine remembers is one that she didn’t officially attend. “My friend was married on a beach in Hawaii and it was simulcasted for friends and family to watch on the internet,” Edie said. “Those of us back home felt part of the audience because we were able to instant message each other and send well wishes to the bride and groom. Things Remembered and the groom let the guests out of the church, pew by pew,” Suzanne said. “It was a neat way for the couple to greet each guest right away, and it replaced the receiving line at the reception. So when everyone arrived at the reception, the couple knew they had already spoken to every guest. When my husband and I got married shortly after, we did the same thing and it worked really well.”

Worth a Thousand Words Jennifer Davies attended a wedding where she was impressed by the quick work of the photographer. “At the reception, the photographer compiled all the photos from the day thus far, with the couples’ wedding song, into a video,” Jennifer said. “It was a nice touch to see the photos that quickly, and to see some behind-the-scenes moments that

happened before the ceremony that we hadn’t been there for.” When Lauren Boyer got engaged, it was a surprise to…pretty much no one. She and her fiancé had been high school sweethearts and together for nine years. “I wasn’t really a ‘Pinterest” type of bride,” Lauren said, and her family appreciated her low-maintenance approach. But since she and her now-husband Ted had been together so long, she wanted to illustrate that on her big day. “We had lots of framed photos of us at the reception, from all stages of our dating-- including our awkward teen years,” said Lauren. “They were a little embarrassing, but it was fun to look back on, and have our guests see our early days as a couple until our time now, making it official.

“It was a nice touch to see the photos that quickly, and to see some behind-the-scenes moments that happened before the ceremony that we hadn’t been there for.” Things Go Wrong, But Turn Out Right Not everything goes perfectly at a wedding, but most mishaps are thankfully minor and often the guests don’t even notice. Every once in a while, however, things seem to go wrong from beginning to end. Judy Culp remembers a friend’s wedding that fits that description. “It was a whirlwind romance and a quickly planned wedding,” Judy said. “It was an outdoor ceremony in August and blisteringly hot. Many, many people didn’t RSVP, but showed up anyway, so there weren’t enough chairs at the wedding or tables at the reception. The microphones didn’t work, so no one could hear a thing. The bridal party was the last to arrive at the reception and they had nowhere to sit.” It would have been a disaster, and the bride was indeed flustered, but what Judy remembers most is the look of pure joy on the groom’s face. “Steve was beaming with pride through the whole thing,” said Judy. “Throughout the ceremony, he’d take Kim’s hand and raise it in the air like he just won the Super Bowl or something. None of the other stuff that went wrong even phased him, and not because he wasn’t aware of it. He was just so happy he had his bride. It was really sweet and what stands out most to me about the day.” ♥ 188

9. FROM A BUDGET STANDPOINT, WOULDN'T IT BE MORE COST-EFFICIENT TO HAVE AN OUTDOOR RECEPTION AT MY PARENTS' HOME?

Kristin Kennedy: Often times that is the misconception of an outdoor wedding. In the Midwest, it is extremely hard to predict the weather so we have to plan for A, B and sometimes C scenarios. Even though the backyard is beautiful, we have to bring in everything: tent (plus kitchen tent), lighting, restrooms, power, dumpster, heating/cooling devices, valet, rentals, and sometimes a floor! Do you get the picture yet? Labor, lots and lots of labor! Not to mention if you’re in the city limits, there are permits or noise ordinances that you have to comply with. So, let’s say you have a perfect, magical wedding day, there is always the day after—the damages. The grass may have to be replaced, rental items could be broken or damaged and trash has to be taken care of. It’s all about the mindset and managing expectations with the great outdoors. If you have an open mind, surround yourself with positive people, outdoor weddings are a lot of fun! When it comes to the financial side, plan to spend as much if not more than a venue… and hire a planner with outdoor experience!

10. HOW DO WEDDING PLANNERS MAKE EACH WEDDING DIFFERENT?

Katie Saeger, Katie Saeger Events: Wedding planners who specialize in wedding design will take the time to really get to know the two of you in the beginning of the process. This will involve questionnaires about things you two do in your personal lives. This includes your favorite foods, your favorite drinks, your favorite vacation, and even a favorite art piece. All of those clues help give us a background on who you both are outside of the wedding day to really help us come up with ideas that are special to you and will make your guests walk in and say: “WOW! This is so them!” There are tons of inspiration photos on Pinterest that may start a conversation with us as well. You may have pinned a ton of photos but not see a common thread between them. Lipsitz recommended a simple eyelash extension. Eyelashes tend to thin as women age. “It was very subtle, not like a showgirl. It really opened my eyes and made them pop. It made me feel prettier,” says Lott. What do older brides want? The same thing every bride wants – to look like themselves, only better. They don’t want to look old. They don’t want to look heavily made up. They want to look fresh. They want to look pretty. “The last thing they want is to look completely different from themselves. We avoid trendy makeup or anything that looks harsh or dated. We focus on traditional, classic makeup that complements the bride,” says Lipsitz. Lipsitz avoids using eye shadows that contain too much glitter or shimmer. Matte or very light shimmer is more complementary. Products that have texture tend to accentuate wrinkles. Consulting with your stylist about hair in advance of the wedding is a must. Brides should plan ahead for things like hair length, highlights, and covering grey hairs. “Leading up to the wedding, brides should manage the health of their hair. Invest in quality products for your particular hair type. If you want a look that requires longer hair and you have medium length hair, you need to plan ahead. Do you need color? Do you need extensions? These are all important considerations,” says Gallegos. “Hair changes dramatically with age. It becomes much drier and coarser and the color may be different. During the consultation we look at the bride’s hair and plan ahead to make the wedding day easier. If you have frizzy or curly hair, we can deal with that,” says Lipsitz. Wedding day hair styles also are dependent on the bride’s attire. Let your stylist know if you are wearing a headpiece, such as a veil or hat. Bring a picture of your gown so the stylist may consider the color and style of your dress when suggesting hairstyles. Bring jewelry, especially earrings, that you plan to wear that day. “Inspiration images, pictures from magazines or websites, are important. Bring pictures of what you like, but also what you don’t like to help us understand the look you prefer,” says Gallegos. With older brides, the focus is on softening the look and avoiding overly structured or trendy styles. “I didn’t want anything big or bouffant looking. Annie did a classic side part with a low twist in the back that kept my hair off my neck and highlighted the neckline of my gown,” says McAfoos.

Establishing an exercise routine is another way for older brides to look and feel younger and helps relieve the stress that is often inherent with planning a wedding. Diana Beckham, RN, BSN, is the owner of Titanium Fitness and is an ACSM certified personal trainer. Beckham regularly works with Lipsitz and Gallegos. “Personal training gives brides a little bit of the self-care they need but also empowers them and gives them confidence when they put on the wedding dress,” says Beckham. Beckham says the earlier a bride can start an exercise program the better, especially for brides who do not already exercise regularly. “Older brides should allow more time to achieve their goals. When you are young it is easier to make lifestyle changes and see immediate results. It takes longer when you are older. Our metabolism slows as we age so we need to allow for that,” says Beckham. When you meet with a trainer to begin a program, it’s important to discuss your goals and your needs. If you want the ability to work out at home and not always at the gym, make that clear to the trainer. There are exercises you can do at home with minimal equipment if that better fits your busy schedule. Good nutrition, adequate sleep, and stress management also are important considerations. “I want to give brides tools to manage and optimize their wellness and be able to maintain it. It shouldn’t end on your wedding day. I want this to be sustainable moving forward. I want a bride to feel good about her body not just on her wedding day but on her honeymoon and beyond,” says Beckham. Beckham asks brides not just for a picture of the bridal gown but a picture of the bride wearing the dress. “I welcome input from the bride about the areas she wants to tone but I also want to see her wearing the dress. My perspective might be different from hers. This allows me to better address areas that need work and those that don’t,” says Beckham. Regardless of your age, it is important to work with stylists and trainers who are experienced, who you trust, and who make you feel comfortable. Look for someone who understands how you want your makeup to look and feel. Look for a trainer who listens to you. “Personal training is just that – personal. One of the most common complaints I hear is that a trainer didn’t listen to the client. Make

sure you have a good relationship with the trainer,” says Beckham. “I don’t wear a ton of makeup so I found the whole idea of wedding makeup to be a little overwhelming. Lisa made it approachable for me. She suggested a shade of lipstick that was perfect for me. She used makeup to make my features pop but I didn’t feel like I had on a lot of

makeup. Her team was amazing to work with,” says McAfoos. And make sure you are the star of the show, not the makeup. Take if from Lott… “It’s important for women getting married later in life to embrace their age and look like yourself. Age doesn’t matter. Have fun and be comfortable with yourself. ♥

ARE YOU REGISTERED?

(including mac 'n cheese, chopped salad, biscuits and southern greens+smoked pork)

As soon as you've set the wedding date, you can begin your bridal registry—experts recommend starting four to six months before the wedding. Start by taking an inventory of what you already have, then create a wish-list of what you need and want. Make an appointment with a bridal registry consultant at a major department store or specialty shop that carries the items on your list. Choose items in a variety of price ranges so your guests can shop within their means.

SELECTING YOUR TRANSPORTATION Transportation vendors advise couples not to delay making reservations. Limousines and party buses are more in demand at certain times of the year, such as during prom in the spring and

homecoming in the fall. Booking nine to 12 months in advance is recommended, especially during the peak months of April, May and June in the spring and September, October and November in the fall. Vendors also caution against choosing your transportation based solely on the price. Safety and service level should be at the top of the list of considerations.
