Say it with flowers While I was writing the flower details for the bouquet feature, “In Bloom,” Testrake of Sisters Floral Design Studio. She mentioned how great it is when brides give their florist a color scheme and overall style, and allow them the freedom to choose the prettiest varieties of flowers. The end result is nothing short of amazing seasonal textures. I couldn’t agree more. Floral design can be the cornerstone of your wedding theme. Flowers in rich jewel tones can bring even more drama to a candlelight ceremony, whereas the delicate whimsy of pastel peonies and roses can accentuate the romance. Even your choice of greenery can add dimension to your floral decor. The flowers played a special part for the weddings of brides Sarah Howser (above) and Stefanie Ronald (below).
New bride Sarah Howser, along with her bridesmaids, laid their bouquets directly on the tables and kept all the table decor super low. Guests were able to see everyone at the table and in the room and really take in how lush and beautiful the florals were. “Everyone was blown away by the flowers!” said Sarah. See Sarah’s wedding on page 60. In honor of her mother who passed away, Stefanie Ronald asked her florist to add a hint of plum to her flowers to signify pancreatic cancer awareness. The plum hue was carried through with lighting and decor. Even her wedding planners dressed in purple that evening. Stefanie’s wedding can be found on page 92. This issue is packed with almost every flower imaginable between the twenty-six real wedding stories, our amazing fashion essay “Squad Goals,” three styled shoots, and, of course, our bouquet feature, “In Bloom.” Florists are the experts in the art of floral linguistics and can help every petal and stem say exactly what you envision. My advice? Let them! Happy planning!

THE HAIR AND MAKEUP: The overall theme of the shoot was edgy, modern and fierce, so Savanah Moore and her team took this to heart when coming up with the bride’s look. “I wanted to give the bride something different than what we typically envision when we think bridal. I wanted her look to exude fierce confidence and to really own the edgy modern theme of the shoot, yet still have a really pretty and elegant feel.” Each bridesmaid had her own personality and their hair and makeup

were styled to suit their unique look. We had a rocker, a girly girl, an androgynous and a hipster. “Our rocker bridesmaid was bold and all about a statement, our girly girl bridesmaid was all about pretty in pink, our androgynous bridesmaid was simple and chic, and our hipster bridesmaid was soft and flowy.” THE FLORALS: The bold and bright florals added fierce energy. The rich tones and organic texture coupled with a bright punch of orange added a fun, unexpected dimension. Ashley’s bridal bouquet included frittilaria, boronia, scabiosa, anemone, ornithogalum, dahlias, phalaenopsis orchids, amaranthus, tulips, ranunculus and lilac.

“We pretty much broke all of the wedding rules. No cake, no church, 5:30 pm ceremony, no something blue, no something borrowed, my something old was that I ended up using an old headband as the belt on my dress . . . no bridesmaids, no groomsmen, no white flowers, no bouquet toss, no dollar dance (at the dismay of some family LOL!). We did it our way, and by taking out all of the traditions that weren't special to us, it felt more intimate and just simply focused on that we are so in love and excited to have all of our cherished family and friends here to celebrate this special moment.” -SARAH ON HOW THEY PERSONALIZED THE EVENT

Real Moments Sarah & Patrick September 23, 2018 PHOTOGRAPHED BY HAWES PHOTOGRAPHY
“For Sarah’s walk down the aisle, we knew the song had to be “My Chosen One” by Guillemots. It is a song that played a role in the early days of our relationship and it is still very special to us. We contacted our close friends, who are fantastic musicians in their own right, and asked them to learn the song so they could play it live for our ceremony. They worked closely with the string quartet to arrange and rehearse the song. The end result was so special for us and so moving for our guests.”–PATRICK ON HOW THEY PERSONALIZED THE EVENT

“I did exactly what I wanted on my wedding day and wasn’t concerned with people thinking something might be weird or untraditional. Instead of having all bridesmaids I had three bridesmaids and three ‘bridesmen.’ I grew up with all brothers so it was extremely important to me to have them by my side on one of the biggest days of my life. I did my father-daughter dance with not only my dad, but also with each one of my brothers. It was those little things that made the day that much more special.”–KATIE

“Figure out what vibes/mood you want and everything else will fall into place. For the ceremony, we wanted it serious and personal so our friend officiated. In contrast, we wanted the reception to be a laid-back, high energy, fun party. So our event was held outside. We had yard games during cocktail hour (giant kerplunk, giant jenga, and corn hole), and dueling pianos for entertainment because we wanted to dance all night.” -DANNA

We tied in our love for St. Louis in guest welcome bags with gooey butter cake and Billy Goat chips, and in the wedding favors with Gus’ Pretzels and Schlafly Beer. Kelly at The Crimson Petal did a great job of tying Australian florals into our arrangements and every table was named after a favorite place we have traveled together. “In 2016 my mom, Ruth Klaus, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I wanted to honor her and anyone else battling this terrible disease so we did a hint of plum in our flowers, purple uplighting at the reception and in lieu of a traditional favors, we placed cards letting guests know we made a donation to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in honor of my mom and other patients. We also didn’t tell her that her son would be playing our first dance on the piano, so she was deeply touched that she was able to witness such a memorable moment. Island Paradise
Couples San Souci, known as the “Jewel of Jamaica,” is an oceanfront paradise with hidden pavillions tucked away behind lush greenery. JAMAICA With its warm, friendly faces and truly stunning sunsets, Jamaica is a charming paradise that draws people back year after year. In fact, travel agent Mike Schellhase of Travel Haus St. Louis was boarding a plane on his way to Jamaica when we reached out to him and asked for his best ideas for island honeymoons. “Jamaica is a great destination for honeymooners,” he said. “There are A catamaran sails numerous Sandals resorts, but the all-inclusive Couples Resort is strictly off the coast of Ocho Rios, Jamaica couples only.” Any of their four locations on the island of Jamaica would be perfect, but we’ve picked Sans Souci to highlight. Known as the “Jewel of Jamaica,” it’s an oceanfront paradise with cobblestone paths that weave in and around the resort. Hidden pavilions are tucked away behind private lush greenery or sit high on a clifftop, overlooking spectacular ocean views. After a romantic stroll down storybook paths, take a refreshing dip in the mineral pool or go for a soak in the jacuzzi. And, of course, there are the glistening aquamarine waters where you can go snorkeling, swim with dolphins, cruise on a catamaran, or just soak up the sun on those powdery white sand beaches. After a fun-filled day, head back to your elegant honeymoon suite to take in the breathtaking ocean views from your private balcony. 112

ST. LUCIA The Caribbean island of St. Lucia is an ideal honeymoon escape. It offers everything from rest and relaxation to fun and exciting adventure. But most importantly for honeymooners, it offers lots and lots of romance. Susan Robson of Go Travel STL says that St. Lucia is one of her favorite destinations to recommend for newlyweds. In addition to the island’s all-inclusive and adult-only resorts, there is so much to see and do there. “Around every bend,” Robson says, “travelers will find breath-taking views.” You and your brand-new beloved can climb the Piton mountains, zipline over the canopy of a rainforest, The Piton mountains explore natural waterfalls, drive into an actual volcano, or simply soak up the warm Caribbean sun while lying on a stretch of glorious sandy beach. One of the most romantic resorts on the island of St. Lucia is Calabash Cove. A tropical dream come true, this resort has stunning views of both the ocean and the mountains. Take in the sights of white sandy beaches and exotic island foliage from the comfort of your luxury honeymoon suite in the morning. Then in the evening, enjoy a delicious candlelight dinner at Windsong Restaurant before indulging in a romantic couple’s massage at the resort’s Ti Spa. You’ll leave St. Lucia with lasting honeymoon memories from this glorious island paradise.

Fairmont Kea Lani
HAWAII On the Hawaiian island of Maui, you’ll discover sweeping panoramic views that cover beaches and mountains and everything in between. Unique to Maui is more than 30 miles of coastline covered in white, black and red sand beaches. The island has some of the world’s best surfing, and the clear ocean waters are great for snorkeling, swimming, or just soaking up the warm island sun. Be sure to visit Haleakala National Park, where you can steal a sunrise kiss at the highest peak of the shield volcano that makes up 75% of the island. Explore the park’s 30,000 acres via horseback or take a leisurely hike off the beaten path before driving A view from the Road to Hana down the scenic road to Hana for some coastal whale watching. After a full day of adventure, head back to your hotel room to relax. Schellhase recommends the Fairmont Kea Lani, Hawaii's only all-suite and villa luxury oceanfront resort. From your suite’s large lanai, you can take in spectacular views of the sun setting over the ocean. Pamper yourself with a luxurious spa treatment at Willow Stream Spa, or dive into the adults-only swimming pool. Dine on island inspired favorites in one of the resort's four restaurants and end the day with a taste of Hawaii with cocktails and music at LUANA. 116

Island Paradise
With everything from tropical beaches to lush rainforests to mountainous volcanos, Costa Rica offers the perfect combination of adventure and romance. COSTA RICA Costa Rica has it all plus a little bit more. With everything from tropical beaches to lush rainforests to mountainous volcanos, this exciting island offers the perfect combination of adventure and romance. Robson recommends kicking things off in the mountainous Arenal National Park, where you can explore lush rainforests, soak in the soothing Tabacon Hot Springs, or catch a glimpse of rare tropical animals on a Rio Frio Boat Safari through the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge. From the mountains, head down to the Guanacaste region, where you’ll get an exciting honeymoon beach experience. Channel your inner Tarzan and Jane as you swing and zipline through the jungle before picking out the perfect spot for surfing the island’s waves. As the sun sinks low in the sky, finish the day off with a romantic horseback ride along the sandy beaches. Then make your way back to your all-inclusive resort. Schellhase suggests Secrets Papagayo for honeymooners. The 5-star resort hideaway is adults-only and boasts tranquil beaches as well as lush tropical gardens. It might just be one of the most intimate and romantic settings on the whole island of Costa Rica. Indulge in luxury, starting with a visit to their world-class spa before enjoying tasty island fare at one of their international gourmet restaurants. Or you could switch things up by ordering delicious food and drinks from the 24-hour room service and have a romantic night on the comfort of your private terrace. After all the craziness of wedding planning and the stress of pulling everything together, an island honeymoon is the perfect way to unwind and start your new life together. Relax into the warmth of the sunshine and the soothing crash of the waves, as you and your new spouse begin this amazing journey together. ♥

ur aerial themed shoot was designed to capture movement. Known for creating non-traditional gowns for fearlessly bold brides, Kirsten Paige Bridal wished to showcase her gorgeous, flowing designs. The regal, canary yellow bi-plane served as the perfect backdrop providing a hard contrast to the whimsical setting.
Every detail, from the bride's loosely woven braid and organically designed bouquet to the etherial hand lettering and textured velvet ribbon, were chosen with movement in mind.

Sharing a drink, whether it’s a cocktail or a cup of coffee, is a way to celebrate, socialize and relax. Many couples are finding creative ways to incorporate drinks into their wedding reception. START WITH COCKTAILS The cocktail hour is a fun way to kick off your reception and allow guests to mingle and visit before sitting down for dinner. Guests may sip on cocktails from the full, open bar and nibble on passed hors d’oeuvres. (Continued on page 201) 142

Royal Nuptials Things you can learn from the coolest royal couple ever
EVEN THOSE who aren’t getting ready to walk down the aisle love a royal wedding. The pomp, the circumstance, the grand scale and glamour of it all. The marriage of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle on May 19 enthralled the world, but not just because he’s a prince who we’ve watched grow up and she’s a beautiful American actress. It’s the more un-royal stuff about these two that we can all learn from, and brides especially can take note of, in the midst of planning their own glorious galas.

After the Party How to keep the romance going when you finally get to be alone
YOU’VE SAID “I DO,” taken dozens of pictures, had your first dance and greeted hundreds of guests. It’s finally time for you and your husband to be alone. Together. As husband and wife. So how can you to make your wedding night as wonderful as the day that leads up to it?
PLAN AHEAD To keep the focus on the romance, get the logistics out of the way early. Many couples choose to stay at a hotel on their wedding night. Either 150

you or your fiancé should check into the hotel prior to the wedding so you can head straight to your room after the reception. If time allows, you may want to unpack your things so you are settled into the room and can keep the focus on each other. Also, be sure to arrange for transportation from the reception to the hotel if necessary. Pack something a little more comfortable to slip into when you get to the room. Wedding Planning Big or Small, We Cater Them All
ADAM’S SMOKEHOUSE
Some tips you may not have considered BY J AC K I E T U C K E R
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Make a budget before you start booking vendors.
Communicate! Talk with your wedding planner, vendors, and venues so that they clearly understand your vision for your big day. Use the same photographer for both your engagement and wedding photos, and your wedding pictures will likely turn out better.
Don’t agonize over ceremony music. Hire professionals and take their advice. Speaking of music, check the sound system and acoustics of the venue beforehand. Know what to tip your vendors. Do your research before the big day and create a cheat sheet to keep track of wedding gratuities. Give a copy of your marriage license to a parent or your maid of honor. Better to have a spare in case you lose yours in the hectic days leading up to the wedding.
8. 9.
Have fun personalizing your wedding. From décor to party favors to music selection, enjoy letting both your personalities shine through.

Having said that – be realistic in your free time and DIY abilities. Work ahead and have a back-up plan if you get crunched for time. And don’t be afraid to ask for help.
10.
Remember the objective is to be married to the love of your life. Things happen at weddings—even with professionals leading the way. Let the small stuff go and focus on each other.

FOR THE FACE 4% Retinol Peel: This is a new treatment offered at The Face & The Body Spa & Salon. It’s a professional grade peel that corrects and improves skin texture and appearance by rejuvenating epidermal growth and is performed by a specially trained esthetician. “Often people don’t realize you can do something about skin damaged by the sun and scarring from acne breakouts, but this is an effective treatment for those things,” Pilcher said. A series of three treatments is recommended, and there is a take-home kit with products to use post-care. The 4% Retinol Peel is a deep-down treatment, and if you’ve never had a facial before, you may want to start with a regular facial. Douglas Drinkard, a senior esthetician at The Face & The Body, says brides often schedule monthly facials for six months prior to their wedding date to freshen, tighten and brighten the skin. “They can also add a Microdermabrasion or Dermaplane to the facial for more exfoliation,” Drinkard said. Eyelash Extensions are a big trend right now and might be something to consider for those close-ups. Applying extensions takes about two hours and costs about $200, or more for extra volume options. They can last up to two months and get filled in after the original application, with touch ups done every two to four weeks. The Face & The Body offers free consultations and Pilcher encourages brides to take advantage of them. “It varies from person to person what would be most beneficial to them,” Pilcher said. “A bride may come in thinking she wants one treatment, but another service may actually give her better results. Talking with an esthetician about what you need and want can help us give you the tools to achieve your goals for your wedding day, and beyond,” said Pilcher. FOR HAIR Balayage: This French term means “to sweep or paint” and is an innovative highlighting technique. A colorist paints hair color just on the surface of the hair freehand; the entire section is not saturated with hair dye. The result is soft highlights that easily blend in as hair grows longer. Carla Hall, owner of the Mane Attraction Hair Studio in Collinsville, Illinois, says Balayage offers a more precise, natural look. “With Balayage, there’s no
You 2.0 demarcation—no line where the roots begin and the highlights end. You can highlight the area around the face or do a peek-a-boo look. There are lots of options with this technique.” A stylist who’s worked with many brides and bridal parties over the years, Lisa Wiley at The Salon in Richmond Heights, Missouri, agrees. “The roots are blended really well with Balayage and it adds dimension and movement to the hair, which is great for photos,” Wiley said.
“It’s a long process, but can also be good for those who want a major overhaul of their hair, like going from a darker shade to a blonde,” said Chrissy Stojan, of Hair by Chrissy and St. Louis Bridal Hair and Make-Up. If you just want thicker, healthier hair, you might want to try Monat Haircare.
Stojan has been styling and treating hair for 25 years and is a big believer in the products, especially the shampoo, conditioner and spray. “Usually, after using Monat for about two months, my clients really notice the difference, and so do the people around them,” Stojan said. “Their hair looks naturally
Eyelash extensions are a big trend right now and might be something to consider for those close-ups. Applying extensions takes about two hours and costs about $200, or more for extra volume options. They can last up to two month and get filled in after the original application, with touch ups done every two to four weeks. “Keratin does a great job getting the frizz out of natural curly hair,” Wiley said. She recommends that brides get the treatment about three to four weeks before the wedding. It usually runs about $250, takes about two hours and last about eight weeks. “Girls with curly hair love it! It really smooths the hair,” said Wiley. Olaplex is one of the latest deep conditioning treatments available and it penetrates and rebuilds the hair shaft. It works on a molecular level to seek out broken bonds in the hair that are caused by chemical, thermal, and mechanical damage. You can use Olaplex to restore damaged hair or add it to another service to provide insurance against breakage. FALL/WINTER 2018 • WWW.BRIDESTL.COM

You 2.0 beautiful, fuller and thicker.” Monat’s Let It Grow system contains a shampoo and sprayon treatment that can dramatically help with thinning hair. Clear gloss can be applied about a week before the big day, said Wiley. “It gives hair a lot of shine, and the hair really reflects the
light. It shows very well in pictures.” And be sure to make time for a trial run at the salon, advises Carla Hall. “Brides sometimes come in sure of what hairstyle they want on their wedding day, but once we try it with the veil, they end up choosing a different style or tweaking their original idea,” Hall
said. Hall also suggests the bride bring her dress in to see how the hairstyle works with the top of her dress. A practice run is also important if the style you like is one you’ve never worn before and you’re going from a picture you have. “Sometimes a photo you like might not be the right look for you, and the only way to know for sure is to try it,” Hall said. FOR THE BODY CoolSculpting: You may have heard of this non-surgical technique of permanently destroying fat cells, and the lack of downtime and discomfort make it a popular choice for the right candidates.

CoolSculpting is not a weight loss solution, but can really help the appearance of problem areas that seem to stick around even with a healthy diet and exercise. Popular areas to have the procedure are the abdomen, love handles, back, thighs, underarms and under the chin. The CoolSculpting procedure safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. Treated fat cells are frozen, then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates the dead cells, from the areas of your body you want it most. CoolSculpting is not a weight loss solution, but can really help the appearance of problem areas that seem to stick around even with a healthy diet and exercise. “Popular areas to have the procedure are the abdomen, love handles, back, thighs, underarms and under the chin,” says Pam Campbell,

You 2.0 D.O., at SOCO Shaping, in South County. Dr. Campbell is the on-site physician at SOCO Shaping and the procedure is performed by trained and experienced clinician Cindy Duffy. Clients usually see results in 30-60 days and Dr. Campbell recommends brides start about four to six months before the wedding in order to get a few treatments in, since most clients get the procedure about every 30 days. Each treatment, or area targeted, takes about 30-45 minutes. “We’ve had bridal parties come in for CoolSculpting, as well as the mothers of the bride and groom,” Dr. Campbell said. It can be especially beneficial for arms and those sleeveless and strapless dresses. Those interested should schedule a consultation first, and how many treatments needed, and the price, can vary from person to person. “Cindy will spend as much time as a client wants in the consultation, answering any questions they may have,” said Dr. Campbell. There may be a bit of redness or a little discomfort afterwards, but most clients report no downtime or pain. The Face & the Body’s Brentwood location also offers CoolSculpting. Judy Pilcher there reiterated the importance of a consultation and that the number of treatments need-
ed is very individual. “The fat removed never comes back and once it’s gone, it can motivate someone to keep up with a healthy lifestyle,” Pilcher said. “The ideal candidate for CoolSculpting is someone who is already working to look their best, but has a few areas that need a little
help,” Dr. Campbell said. Pilcher says when you take care of yourself, you feel better about everything else in the wedding planning process, too. Looking good helps you to feel good, so consider some of these beauty and body treatments to get to You, 2.0 for your big day. ♥

Royal Nuptials (Continued from page 144) Don’t be afraid of the in-laws, no matter how seemingly intimidating. Just a month after their engagement was announced, Meghan spent her first Christmas with the royal family. This may not seem like a big deal, but hanging with the royals for the holidays broke protocol. Fiancées are typically not
invited, and even Kate Middleton did not attend Christmas with the royal family until after she and William were married in 2011. But Meghan was quickly included, attending Christmas lunch with Queen Elizabeth II and curtseying to the Queen at Christmas mass. What does one get the Queen for Christ-
mas, the woman who literally has everything? The royal family has a tradition of giving each other funny, inexpensive gifts at Christmas. Meghan went all out and gave the Queen a singing toy hamster. The Queen thought it was hilarious and commented that her beloved corgi dogs will love the company of the hamster. By contrast, on her first Christmas with the royals, Kate gave the Queen a recipe for chutney from her grandmother. Thoughtful, but not exactly sidesplitting. Meghan jumped right into the gag gift tradition, even if it was for the Queen of England.

Keep it meaningful and true to you as a couple. The couple announced the wedding date of May 19, 2018 and were engaged just six months prior, on November 27, 2017. It’s believed that Harry chose the date in honor of his 96-year-old grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Harry is extremely close to his grandfather and wanted to have the wedding sooner rather than later, so his grandfather could be there, while he’s still healthy. The couple also chose to be married at St. George’s Chapel, which seats about 800 people, compared to the 1,900 plus guests invited to Westminster Abbey for the ceremony of his brother William and Kate. In addition to wanting a (relatively) more intimate ceremony, St. George’s Chapel is where Harry was baptized, held by his beloved mother Princess Diana. Prince Harry and Meghan decided to invite about 1,200 members of the public to the grounds of Windsor Castle to celebrate their big (really big) day. The couple asked that the people chosen are from a broad range of backgrounds and ages, including young people who have shown strong leadership, and those who have served their communities. Respect tradition but add your own spin. While there are many wedding traditions the couple embraced for their nuptials, there are other personal touches they added to the big day. One break from tradition is that Markle planned on making a speech, or at least a toast, at her wedding reception. And instead of a fruitcake, the traditional choice for British royal weddings, Harry and Markle have chosen a lemon elderflower cake covered with buttercream and fresh flowers. The cake will be made by California-raised pastry chef Claire Ptak, who Markle knew prior to her relationship with Harry, but now is based in London.
Royal Nuptials Traditionally, British weddings don't have a maid of honor. Instead of adult relatives or friends, it's typical that children of the royal family or aristocracy will serve as the wedding party. We all know that Kate broke this rule when her sister Pippa became the most famous maid of honor of all time at her 2011 wedding to Prince William. And while it looked like Markle would depart from royal tradition by appointing a maid of honor, in the end she chose not to. Her longtime BFFs were included as special guests on their wedding day. You are your future husband are a team. Shortly after it became public that Harry and Meghan were dating, she was subjected

was wanted we wanted to do in the world. That’s what got us to date number two.” Harry echoed: “Both of us have passions for making change, change for good.” Long before many of us knew who Meghan Markle was, she spoke to the United Nations about gender equality and the empowerment

Meghan chose to rise above it and not read or listen to any of the tabloids, commentary and blogs. In an interview with the BBC, she said: “While disheartening, I just focus on who we are as a couple, enjoy being together and tune the rest of that out.” But Harry felt it necessary to do more. He immediately issued an appeal through an official statement to the press and social media commentators to “end the wave of abuse and harassment” and that he feared for Meghan’s safety. Harry predicted that commentators will say that is the price to pay for celebrity and that “this is all part of the game.” Harry countered: “This is not a game—it is her life and mine.” Give ‘em hell, Harry.

The campaign aimed to build on existing progress in tackling stigma, raising awareness, and providing vital help for people with mental health problems. Harry broke new ground in the royal family by openly and honestly discussing his grief and mental health challenges after the death of his mother. The couple asked people who wished to send them a wedding gift to consider donating to one of several selected charities instead. They chose seven charities representing a range of issues that they care deeply about, including women's empowerment, HIV prevention, homelessness and the environment. Many of the charities they chose are smaller and not well-known and the couple is happy to be able to amplify and shine a light on their work. Harry told the BBC: “We’re a fantastic team and we hope, over time, to have as much impact on all the things we care about as much as possible.” How can you not root for these two? It’s a modern fairy tale that many of us want to see have a very happy ending.♥ 198

After the Party (Continued from page 150) sets are popular among brides. “The Commando thong with an applique detail that reads “Bride” on the white pair or “Mrs.” on the black pair paired with a matching half-camisole is a popular choice,” says Messmer. “Brides also like the lace tank nighties and boy shorts from Cosabella and Eberjey with matching robes.”
are the same. Everyone wants their wedding night to be a memorable, monumental experience that they can look back on with wonderful memories. But weddings, while romantic and lovely, also cause a lot of factors that can interfere with a romantic evening. There is exhaustion, stress of interacting with family all day, alcohol consump-
tion and even post-wedding letdown now that the big party you’ve been planning for months is over. “Marriage is all about communicating, discussing expectations and compromising. Your wedding night is no exception,” says Heather Raznick, licensed clinical social worker and certified sex therapist.
Whether you’ve had sexual experience prior to your wedding night or not, the expectations are the same. Everyone wants their wedding night to be a memorable, monumental experience that they can look back on with wonderful memories. SET THE SCENE To continue the essence of your wedding, bring some elements of the day to the hotel with you. Bring a bottle of wine from the reception to drink together while you enjoy a moment of peace and quiet to reflect on your day. Ask one of your bridesmaids to take a couple pieces of wedding cake and a bottle of champagne to your hotel room. Or bring some flowers from the reception to the room with you. The reception is about treating the guests but afterwards, you may pamper yourselves and have some fun with it. These simple touches will help create a serene, romantic setting after a busy day. Music is another way to set the mood. Put together a wedding night playlist on your MP3 player and bring it to the hotel along with a speaker so you can listen to music that is meaningful to both of you as you relax. After the Party Wedding night sex can be a complicated mix of high expectations and the stress to perform to those expectations. But couples can avoid this dilemma with communication and preparation. “There is a high probability that the sexual interaction, if not discussed beforehand, will be disappointing. But if couples discuss their
expectations for the wedding night ahead of time and set expectations appropriately, it can be a wonderful experience,” says Raznick. Being prepared for the wedding night experience goes beyond lingerie and setting the mood, especially for a couple that has waited until their wedding night to have sex. Raznick points out

that things don’t always work the way they do in the movies. Preparations need to be made in advance to address issues such as birth control and lubrication. A visit to the gynecologist or a heart-to-heart with a trusted family member or close married friend may be necessary. On the big night, a romantic candlelit bath or giving each other massages may help both the bride and groom relax and prepare for the moment. Couples who are sexually active already may want to discuss ways to spice up the wedding night and make it special. Some couples agree to a vow of celibacy for a certain time before the wedding to promote a feeling of eager anticipation for the wedding night. Or perhaps there is something new you both want to try that you can save for your wedding night. AVOID HEALTH ISSUES Scheduling a visit with your gynecologist may be beneficial prior to your wedding, especially if you haven’t been sexually active. Your doctor can help you determine the method of birth control that is best for you and discuss common issues that arise, such as honeymoon cystitis, a term used for a bladder infection. “It is not uncommon for women to develop a bladder infection on her honeymoon when she is having sex for the first time, more frequent sex or more vigorous sex,” says Thomas Whalen, MD, an OB/GYN at Mercy Medical Center. Honeymoon cystitis is caused when bacteria such as E. coli, which is found in the bowel, enters the urethra. During sex, penetration can cause bacteria to be pushed into the vagina and may lead to infection. Symptoms include a burning or painful sensation during urination, cloudy or blood-tinged urine and the urge to urinate frequently, none of which are welcome on a honeymoon. Once diagnosed, a bladder infection can be treated with antibiotics. However, Whalen says there are some simple ways to prevent infections. Drinking cranberry juice acidifies the urine, making it less hospitable to bacteria. Emptying the bladder immediately after intercourse will help flush the bacteria from the urethra. Avoiding large amounts of caffeine and drinking plenty of water also help. There is a higher chance of infection if you have sex during your period or if you are susceptible to bladder infections. In either of these cases, you should ask your doctor about using an antibiotic to prevent infection. Just like the ceremony and reception, your wedding night will be a success with a little planning, communication and creativity. ♥

Michele Weinfeld-Johnson, wedding sales manager with the Chase Park Plaza Hotel, says most guests prefer traditional cocktails. “Men typically want a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned. Many women ask for champagne or a champagne spritzer,” says Weinfeld-Johnson. The cocktail hour literally is that – one hour of cocktails. Couples usually choose to close the bar when guests are seated for dinner. In place of the open bar, couples offer wine service with dinner and champagne for the toast. Then the bar reopens after dinner when the party really begins.
Many couples are hoosing to offer underage or non-drinking guests a more upscale offering than soda or water. Fizzy bars, Italian soda bars, or a signature mocktail are a few nonalcoholic offerings that are more sophisticated than a Shirley Temple. SIGNATURE COCKTAILS While it has diminished in popularity, some couples still choose to offer a signature cocktail during the cocktail hour. This idea works best when the drink has a personal connection to the bride and groom. Don’t just name a drink after yourselves and add ‘tini to the end of it. Josie Littlepage, owner of Cosmopolitan Events, had a couple from New York serve a cocktail that was meaningful to their East Coast roots – the Southside. The drink was created at the Southside Sportsmen’s Club on Long Island and is popular on the East Coast. FALL/WINTER 2018 • WWW.BRIDESTL.COM

NON-ALCOHOLIC DRINKS Many couples are choosing to offer under-age or non-drinking guests a more upscale offering than soda or water. Fizzy bars, Italian soda bars, or a signature mocktail are a few nonalcoholic offerings that are more sophisticated than a Shirley Temple. “We find that there are more responsible drinkers now and our clients want to make sure that the designated drivers also are being taken care of in an elegant way so they don’t have to drink soda all night,” says Littlepage. STATIONS Drink stations that serve a particular drink either during the cocktail hour or throughout the reception are popular and get guests moving around the reception. Martini bars are a popular choice, featuring gin, vodka and a beautiful ice sculpture. Guests can order their martinis as dirty as they like and choose from a variety of olives to garnish. For an early wedding, a mimosa bar adds a lovely touch. Guests can choose champagne or prosecco and a variety of mixers such as orange and pineapple juice, fresh peach nectar and strawberry lemonade. Garnish with various berries. If spirits aren’t your thing, try a wine or beer tasting station. If your signature drink is Schlafly Dry-Hopped APA, have a beer station so guests can sample flights of beer from your favorite brewer. As you plan your reception, keep in mind the type of event you are having, the season, and your personal tastes, and choose a drink option that works best for you. Your guests will enjoy seeing the personal connection and thought that went into your selection and will be happy to raise a glass to toast your wedding. ♥ 202

3 Both bride and groom must apply in person. In Missouri, you may apply for a license at any office provided the wedding is to take place within the state. In Illinois, you must apply for and receive a license from the county in which the ceremony will take place.
