GLADIATORS: HEROES OF THE COLOSSEUM In an Australian exclusive, “Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum” has opened at Queensland Museum as part of an international touring exhibition. The exhibition features more than 110 original artefacts including pieces of the Colosseum, authentic elaborately decorated bronze gladiator helmets and original arms and armour preserved in the ashes of Pompeii. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the everyday lives of Ancient Roman Gladiators with interactive games and displays that reveal who gladiators were, where they lived and how they trained. “Sung into Being: Aboriginal Masterworks 1984–94” features more than 100 works from a period when Aboriginal art began to be more widely shown and appreciated in Australia as fine art. Jack Wunuwun, Murrungun/Djinang people, It draws together work by major “Barnumbirr Manikay II - (Morning Star Song artists from the Maningrida region Cycle), Munyarirr - Spirit of Barnumbirr” in central Arnhem Land, N.T. and 1988. Brisbane Festival, one of Australia’s leading international arts festivals and Queensland’s largest cultural event. This year there are more than 60 impressive and spectacular events across Brisbane’s hottest cultural precincts, including dance, music, cabaret, theatre, circus, comedy, visual art, film and more. With five world premiere commissions, 11 Australian premieres, 25 Queensland premieres and a star-studded lineup of international luminaries, Australian legends and homegrown heroes, Brisbane Festival is set to envelope the city once more from 9 to 30 September. There are 26 unique events including British megastars London Grammar headlining an outdoor mini-festival at Riverstage; the euphoric Megan Washington in concert with Queensland Symphony Orchestra; and Australian rock legends Tex Perkins, Don Walker and Charlie Owens.

Theatre highlights from the world stages include the Lyric Hammersmith’s compelling production of Ferdinand von Schirach’s controversial courtroom drama “Terror”—would you kill 164 people in order to save 70,000? Or the ravishing Chinese dance-drama “Under Siege”; and the Australian premiere of the satirical comedy “An Octoroon”, a subversively funny riff on the 1859 melodrama by crowdpleasing Irish impresario Dion Boucicault. There’s also a string of work from the Asia Pacific, reflecting Brisbane’s close relationships in the region. There’ll be work from China, Korea, Singapore and Indonesia. This year’s program sings with local legends too, including Dead Puppet Society and Tim Sharp’s highly-anticipated visual theatre extravaganza “Laser Beak Man”; Casus Circus’s dizzying new work “Driftwood”; and a doubledose from homegrown hit-makers Strut & Fret, including the sizzling “LIMBO UNHINGED”. THINGS TO DO South Bank is well known for its swimming lagoon Streets Beach, but there are plenty of alternative activities for those who prefer to stay dry. Another popular attraction with a maritime theme can be found at the southern end of the Parklands. The Queensland Maritime Museum houses historical maritime artefacts, photographs and paintings in its collection, alongside numerous vessels which you can explore, such as the World War II frigate HMAS Diamantina and the powerful steam tug Forceful. It is a hands-on museum run by passionate volunteers, many of whom are retired ship masters, marine engineers and ex-naval personnel.

SHOPPING SECRETS South Bank is home to a number of eclectic creative markets. If you have an appetite for the unusual and like to browse, visit the Collective Markets, which take place on Fridays at the Stanley Street Plaza from 5pm to 9pm, Saturdays from 10am to 9pm and Sundays from 9am to 4pm. Here you can pick up handmade fashion, vintage collectibles, jewellery, homewares and furniture at affordable prices. Little Stanley Street plays host to the Young Designers Market on the first Sunday of every month from 10am to 4pm. Everything at this market is handmade by the stall holders. at the market is the first step towards the commercialisation of their designs so you will also be helping a talented up-and-comer get a head start in the industry. Chatting to the creators is one of the pleasures of shopping at this colourful market. WHERE TO EAT South Bank has a dazzling selection of restaurants and cafés, many of which capitalise on Queensland’s love of outdoor dining. South Bank Surf Club overlooks the famous swimming lagoon and gives an inner-city twist to the traditional Aussie surf club. It is a great spot for a drink and a bite to eat on a sunny afternoon.

Alongside the river there is River Quay, a collection of sleek dining options ranging from champagne breakfasts at River Quay Fish to rustic Italian share plates at Popolo and the steakhouse sophistication of Stokehouse Q. Fresh seafood, home-style favourites and an Indonesian influence can be found at The Jetty, while Francophiles will appreciate Aquitaine Brasserie, a charming alfresco diner offering a delicious taste of France with classic dishes such as Marseille bouillabaisse. Nearby Grey Street offers an equally impressive choice of dining options. The vibe here tends to be more lively, especially at Olé, a Spanish restaurant with a dedicated sangria bar. Share plates are a feature here making this a great spot to visit with colleagues or friends. Try The Spaghetti House Trattoria if you’re in the mood for traditional Italian favourites served in a stylish but homely space. AT 287 METRES above sea level,

Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean. Reach Brisbane Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant.

The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a

military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 56 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake. As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.
