A Walk With History
Throughout its history, our city has been called “A Hornet’s Nest of Rebellion,” the Queen City and simply, Charlotte. Countless events and figures have left their mark on Charlotte since its founding in 1768 in the form of structures and stories to pass down. Stroll through our city and discover key sights and landmarks that tell the story of Charlotte’s past. MADISON SULLIVAN

ST. PETER’S CATHOLIC CHURCH
Step off the bustling city streets into nature (and back in time) by visiting the Historic Latta Plantation and nature preserve. Guided and self-guided tours of the circa 1800 cotton plantation and living history farm are available. Meet rare breeds of livestock on the grounds and tour the plantation home and outbuildings. Workshops and re-enactments are often held here, furthering the experience for history buffs.
As you make your way through the heart of Uptown, be sure to stop outside the oldest Catholic parish in Charlotte to look for the original cornerstone, laid in 1851 (hint: it’s underfoot). Then, let your eyes wander up to its Gothic windows and Victorian steeple. The church’s interior is equally stunning, as bas-reliefs depicting important figures in the church’s past, massive paintings, stained glass and other works line its walls.

SPIRIT OF MECKLENBURG STATUE
Although its gaze is fixed on modern roadways, this statue titled The Spirit of Mecklenburg, portrays a harrowing event from 1775 when Captain James Jack, a local tavern owner raced to Philadelphia to ensure the Mecklenburg Resolves, Mecklenburg County’s declaration of freedom, made it to the Continental Congress. Passersby will marvel at sculptor Chas Fagan’s ability to bring bronze to life. The statue was placed here by the May 20th Society. 100 N. KINGS DRIVE

From the moment you touch down at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and step out onto Queen City soil, you’ll be greeted by our area’s past—in the form of its namesake, Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Her statue holds a crown overhead, “counterbalanced with the backwards motion as a welcome sign,” explains Raymond Kaskey, the sculpture’s artist. The royal was queen consort of Great Britain when our city and county were named.

PRESIDENT JAMES K. POLK STATE HISTORIC SITE
Next time you catch a game at the Spectrum Center, spend any time you have away from the court appreciating its displays, created as a tribute to the region’s history. Even the name of the Center’s basketball team, the Charlotte Hornets, harks back to a historical comment. The Mecklenburg Historical Association tells of Lord Cornwallis’ reference to Charlotte as “A Hornet’s Nest of Rebellion” after his mere 16-day-stay in 1780. Fans wear the name with pride.
Walk in the childhood footsteps of the United States’ 11th president as you discover the James K. Polk State Historic Site. In addition to seeing Polk’s birthplace, you’re invited to peruse exhibits on his youth and presidency, watch a short film, take guided tours of the cabins, visit a cemetery where his grandmother is laid to rest, and explore a nature trail and a garden straight out of the early 1800s.

SPRING IN THE GALLERIES As spring bursts forth, full of flowers, Charlotte’s galleries follow suit, greeting the season with an abundance of whimsical exhibits. Hodges Taylor doesn’t disappoint. Its 2018 exhibit, “At Play,” pictured below, is an example of the intriguing art it curates. Its March-May exhibition “<Reply>” pairs Charlotte-based artists Amy Herman and Micah Cash to show their photographic conversation created over the course of 24 weeks.
With spring comes rabbits. Lark & Key acknowledges this, bringing “Rabbit Rabbit” to its new location in a “celebration of new beginnings.” This exhibit, which runs through March 31, was created with rabbit

EX P L O R E
Neighborhoods DILWORTH Originally the brainchild of Edward Dilworth Latta in the 1890s, Dilworth was Charlotte’s first streetcar suburb. To attract residents and businesses to the area, Latta built a 90-acre park. The community was constructed as a grid that centered on East Boulevard, welcoming families to the turnof-the-century, colonial-revival and Craftsman-style architecture. Today, a new generation has discovered the charm and neighborliness of Dilworth, with its tree-lined streets, front porches and family-friendly sidewalks. It continues to thrive as one of the city’s most historic and popular neighborhoods. Freedom Park is a year-round hub for outdoor activity and festivals. Shops and restaurants add to the area’s appeal, especially on East Boulevard, which has earned a reputation as being Charlotte’s boutique row. ELIZABETH Where Uptown’s East Trade Street turns into Elizabeth Avenue is where you enter the charmingly hip neighborhood
24
of Elizabeth. No, this place isn’t named after the HRH Queen Elizabeth II (as one might assume given that Charlotte itself is named for a former royal). It actually takes its moniker from Elizabeth College, the small Lutheran women’s school that is situated within its bounds. The suburban-style burg and leafy historic district is another that thrived in the early part of the 20th century, thanks to the streetcar. Independence Park is one of the neighborhood’s larger attractions. elizabethcommunity.com NODA Following New York City’s penchant for catchy neighborhood acronyms (think: SoHo and Nolita), Charlotte presents this “North Davidson”-at-36th Street enclave as, simply, NoDa. It manages to cram a lot into a mere square mile, much of it art-related and all of it eclectic. Visitors can see the work of local artists in galleries, during monthly art walks and, often, in progress on a street corner. NoDa boasts a couple of craft breweries, as well as independently owned specialty boutiques and restaurants with food programs that span the globe. It is equal parts hippie and hip, ground zero for the creative crowd. noda.org PLAZA MIDWOOD The Plaza and Central Avenue are the two main drags of this affluent, residential neighborhood that originated in the 1920s as a streetcar suburb. Plaza Midwood ran the gamut of socioeconomic standings during the 20th century, from moneyed socialites like the VanLandinghams (their enormous bungalow on The Plaza is now an inn that also hosts weddings) to a rather scruffy vibe in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, Plaza Midwood attracts a crowd that finance-focused Uptowners might label as “gritty,” at least to those outside the lawns of the Charlotte Country Club. There are diners, ethnic eateries (sushi, tapas, Irish, North African) and other casual restaurants—one of the most famous being the Midwood Smokehouse—as well as shops focused on skateboarding, vintage gear, records and LGBTQ books.
SOUTH END The remnants of a thriving, turn-of-the-century textile industry give this Charlotte enclave a beer-fueled identity with upwards of a dozen local craft breweries and taprooms taking up residency in former mill buildings. But brewers aren’t the only people walking these streets just south of Uptown. In the same neighborhood where the region’s first railroad steamed into Charlotte in 1852, the Blue Line light rail transports visitors from Uptown, SouthPark and, in 2018, NoDa. Hundreds of designers—from the fashion industry to the web—have offices here. By the way, American novelist Carson McCullers wrote the opening chapters of her first book, “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter,” while living in a boarding house on East Boulevard. historicsouthend.com SOUTHPARK The central feature of this neighborhood is the SouthPark Mall, the largest shopping mall in the entire state of North Carolina. With designer stores such as Burberry, L’Occitane, David Yurman, Fabletics, Louis Vuitton, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Frye and Tory Burch, one can surmise the type of resident SouthPark attracts. Six miles from Uptown, SouthPark sits on the former site of a 3,000-acre farm, today’s atmosphere sharply contrasting with any previous rural sentiment. UPTOWN Charlotteans call their downtown neighborhood Uptown, perhaps because it’s located on a hill. Major corporation headquarters like Duke Energy, Bank of America and BB&T keep business travelers in this part of town (and you will notice the suits), while leisure travelers and residents can soak up culture at the Mint Museum, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, the Gantt Center, the Levine Museum of the New South and the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, to name just a few. Uptown is also the site of Bank of America Stadium, home of the NFL Carolina Panthers. At night, Uptown’s abundance of restaurants, bars and live music venues keeps things lively. This neighborhood is best experienced on foot.
