IRISH-AMERICAN HERITAGE SOCIETY

It has been my distinct pleasure to serve as the forty-first and a second-generation President of the Irish American Heritage Society. As I look back at the previous Presidents, I am humbled and recognize that the small contributions I have made pale in comparison to the efforts of those who came before me. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The future depends on what you do today”. When I became re-engaged with Society in 2015, after living in Statesboro for the previous sixteen years, I was fortunate to serve with Russ Gambill, Ralph Bowles and Daniel Eubanks as my Presidents. I quickly learned we needed to improve the financial status, membership recruitment and membership engagement activities. With the assistance and leadership of the previous Presidents, we made great strides and the future of our Society is bright indeed. Our Society is a social organization, but it must also operate like a business to fund the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and fulfill the principles of our Charter. The fun can’t begin

until the bills get paid! Membership dues, the Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival and the new St. Patrick’s Day Parade Program are critically important to the Society. The generous commitment of time from our membership is another critical key to our success. I am happy to report that we are in terrific financial shape. Over the past four years, our membership has grown by 141 new members. I feel we have improved the communications of the Society through email blasts and reminders. This growth has helped us proudly support the Mary Beth Regan Memorial Scholarship and the Brian Mulherin Memorial Scholarship! I quoted Gandhi earlier for a reason. As an organization we are on an upward trajectory. The challenge we now face is to more fully live up to our Preamble, “… we have grasped the following forces as the driving purposes of this Society: 1) to keep our families strong in faith and unity, 2) to preserve some of the music, literature and customs indicative of this culture, and 3) to enjoy the friendships of those who share these things in common”. I encourage our entire membership to develop programs to better share the music, literature and customs upon which we are founded. Discuss your Irish ancestry with your children. Share your proud Irish Heritage with nonmembers. Encourage others to join our Society. Our Faith is strong and we throw some pretty good parties, but we must focus on the founding principles of the Society throughout the year, not only on St. Patrick’s Day. Our future depends on what we do today.

IRISH-AMERICAN HERITAGE SOCIETY From the Early Days of the Parade to 2019

A group of thirsty Irish Gentlemen celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the early days of the Society. Minutes from the January 11, 1978 Meeting

On Wednesday, January 11, 1978,

a group of enthusiastic Augustans of Irish descent met at the

Knights of Columbus Home on Henry Street. The purpose of the

meeting was to make plans for an annual celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in Augusta. There were thirty four people in attendance. The following ideas were expressed for consideration:

1. Attend Mass at Holy Trinity Church (which on this day for

this particular group will resort to its old name, St. Patrick’s).

2. After Mass, parade around to the Bi-Centennial Park for a song fest. We hope to have some music and have the Park

decorated, also some hats, sashes, etc. for those participating in the parade.

3. From the park, proceed to the Town Tavern (or some other appropriate place) for lunch.

4. Get in touch with the parochial school and Aquinas and ask them to participate.

5. Offer prizes for the best Irish costumes in the various age groups; best Irish jig, and best essay on “What My Irish Heritage Means to Me”.

6. Contact the news media for good coverage. 7. Help a needy Irish American family.

8

8. This year have an informal party and next year, organize and have a big celebration.

9. “Pass the hat around” at the luncheon so there will be some money to help defray expenses.

10. Decide on a name.

A Steering Committee of eight men-John Douglas, Philip

Kelly, Jamie O’Connell, Joe Kelly, Philip Ward, Paul Thompson,

John Walsh, and Charlie Chesser was appointed. They will meet on Tuesday, January 17, 1978 to consider these suggestions and formulate some plans for the future. They will appoint a subcommittee of four ladies to help carry out these plans.

Charlie Chesser was appointed to contact the Parish Priests

and acquaint them with the plans and ask for their cooperation.

Jamie O’Connell gave a few ideas that might be incorporated in

the Constitution and volunteered to be the Historian. Retta Burke volunteered for the telephone committee.

We are proud of our Irish Heritage and hopethat some good

things will come from this meeting for our children and the City of Augusta.

Respectfully submitted,

Margaret M. Holmes

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! In Loving Memory of

Brian J. Mulherin, Sr.

So Happy Together (Published in Pillars by Seth Taylor | Photos by Nathan Elliott, September 2018)

How many 84 year olds in Augusta ride Harley Davidsons? And of those people, how many purchased their motorcycles while in their early 70s?

At 73, adventuresome Brian Mulherin bought a large green 1982 FLT80 Tour Glide Harley Davidson, took a motorcycle course sponsored by the Georgia Highway Patrol and became a member of the Harley Owners Group. The bike is actually the second Mulherin has owned. He purchased his first in 1941. Cruising around the neighborhood or to the corner store is not unusual behavior for the fun-loving Mulherin, who does not allow age to dictate quality of life. Mulherin also has a sixteen-foot 1989 Sea Ray boat with its original one hundred forty-five horsepower outboard motor that he personally cleans, maintains and keeps docked in Columbia County. And he still completes nearly all of the yard work at his home in Waverly that he shares with gracious wife Neita, 75. Using riding and hand push mowers, Mulherin keeps an attractive yard. His duties include trimming bushes,

repairing electrical cords that he accidentally cuts while trimming bushes, cleaning and adding chemicals to the swimming pool, skimming for pine straw, loading a hummingbird feeder and taking care of hungry animals. These include “Scour,” the Labrador Retriever that lives in the back yard next door. Brian feeds and exercises Scout when his owners go out of town. He also keeps extra dog biscuits and treats in his garage and in the trunk of his car to nourish dogs that wander into their yard

or appear to be strays. Meet Brian and Neita Mulherin. They have been married for twenty-eight years and have lived in a beautiful house on Winchester Drive for eighteen years. Their living room showcases family photos of children and grandchildren. The wall behind the television in that room resembles a Blockbuster video store with its many titles like The Chronicles of Narnia and Catch Me If You Can. Neita likes art films about Impressionism, Italy and the Vatican. The couple even have a drawer in their kitchen filled with Snickers, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Butterfingers, Hershey’s chocolates, cheese crackers and other goodies they offer their grandchildren and an inquisitive magazine interviewer. They have made their house a home with the many knickknacks that decorate the space. Neita collects angels and has a wooden case with a glass front in her foyer that is full of angels in assorted colors, shapes and sizes. She says she has taken comfort in guardian angels since she was a little girl. The Mulherins collect Santa Claus plates, too, and have many hanging in the dining room. Since the 1960s Brian has doubled as Santa Claus during the Christmas holidays for events such as Georgia Regional Hospital Mayor’s Motorcade, the Exchange Club children’s party for severely emotionally disturbed

children, and the Augusta Knights of Columbus annual Christmas party and lunch for orphans from the St. Mary’s Home in Savannah. For two years he was Santa on stage at the Imperial Theater when Girl Scouts from housing projects presented a Christmas play. Mulherin also appears as Santa for the Uptown Kiwanis Club, the Rotary Club of Augusta and the Augusta Exchange Club, and he has played Santa for University Hospital’s annual tree lighting for three years. “Can’t you see why our marriage is lasting?” asks Neita. “There can’t be anyone more fun to live with than Brian Mulherin.” The two first met on a business trip more than thirty years ago when Brian was Human Resources Director of Georgia Regional Hospital in Augusta, a state psychiatric facility that is part of the Division of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse of the Georgia Department of Human Resources. At the time, Neita was living in Columbus and working as Director of the Columbus Mental Health Center. Brian’s first wife, June, had passed away in 1972 at only 45 years old. “In May of ‘75, I met Neita at a state public health convention at Jekyll Island,” explains Brian. “A nurse cooked up the deal that we would meet. I had not intended to get married again, but as fate and Love would have it, we got married in 1980.” Neita says Brian “would still be a happy widower if it were not for Joy Bradley,” the matchmaking nurse. The Mulherins are a blended family as Brian has six adult children–Nancy, Brian Jr., Katherine, Jeannie, Tom and Barbara. From a previous marriage, Neita has four children–Anita, Mary Ruth, Andrea and Richard Jr. “We dated for five years because we

couldn’t figure out how to put our children together,” says Neita. “Now we’re one big family,” says Brian, who is the grandfather of fifteen and greatgrandfather of four. Family is a blessing Brian can describe in fantastic detail. On the night of November 13, 1923, a 3-week-old baby was left by a young woman at the Greene Street home of Dr. W.A. Mulherin. The woman left the sleeping baby with a note, which reads in part as follows: “Please forgive me for doing this, but it is a case of have to. It nearly breaks my heart to give him up but, under the circumstances, I cannot see him suffer and raised improperly ... and if you can’t keep him please give him to someone that you know will be good and kind to him.” At the time, Dr. Mulherin was in Washington, D.C. attending a Southern Medical Association meeting. Fortunately, his wife was home visiting with three other ladies including Dr. Mulherin’s sisterin-law, Elizabeth Mahoney Mulherin. Before Dr. Mulherin returned home from his trip, Elizabeth and her husband decided to adopt the baby. When he returned home, he examined the baby, found his physical condition to be perfect and gave permission for the adoption to occur. “I was the baby in the basket,” exclaims Brian. “That’s how I became a Mulherin.” That same baby grew up to become an encouraging leader in the community. His warm and giving personality is highly regarded by all who know him. And many in Augusta know him and Neita on a professional as well as personal level. Though retired from

their full-time jobs, the Mulherins do not seem to have slowed down. They continue to contribute through many volunteer activities. Brian volunteers at East Central Regional Hospital (formerly Georgia Regional Hospital at Augusta and Gracewood State School and Hospital) and still keeps an office on the Gracewood campus. Neita serves on the Sr. John Towers Advisory Board and was Honorary Chairman of this year’s Sacred Heart Garden Festival. In memory of their daughter Jeannie, who died of cancer on Christmas Eve 1998, Brian and Neita established an endowment through Rich’s in 1999. Jeannie had been an employee of the department store. Macy’s currently sponsors the endowment. Over the years the Mulherins have traveled to some of the world’s more glamorous locales including Italy, Greece, Turkey and Ireland, but they say they have no desire to live anywhere besides Augusta. “It’s home to me,” says Brian. Adds Neita: “There’s so much to do here in Augusta. We have a vacation every day.”

IRISH-AMERICAN HERITAGE SOCIETY History of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Augusta, Georgia.

The Gambill Family in 1988, Floyd Gambill had been elected Grand Marshall. The family is wearing Saint Patrick’s Day ribbon’s brought back from Ireland by Floyd. Russ Gambill and John Scherer still wear these ribbons each St. Patrick’s Day.

celebrations, including parades, in Augusta dating back to the late to the 1970’s.

Although many Augustans held fond memories of the parades

in the city of Savannah, by mid-1970, the Augusta Irish American community was conducting informal conversations about having a St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Augusta. These discussions led

some to suggest a meeting to determine the amount of interest and commitment that could be counted on for such an undertaking. A chance encounter on March 17, 1977, at Augusta’s Town

Tavern provided the initial impetus to have that meeting. Marian

IRISH-AMERICAN HERITAGE SOCIETY 2019 Irish Lady of the Year

Mrs. Estelle Mulherin Duncan

The Irish-American Heritage Society is pleased

to introduce the 2019 Irish Lady of the Year, Mrs. Estelle Mulherin Duncan.

Estelle is the youngest child born to the late Dr. Joseph Louis

Mulherin and Mary Alice Key Mulherin. Her siblings include Dr. Joseph Mulherin, Jr., Janet Mulherin Gibson and the late

Mary Alice Mulherin King. She was raised in a loving family that believed in and demonstrated strong values, especially faith, family and community. Faith is not something that you practice just on

Sundays; it is a way of life. Estelle parents were two of her greatest role models. Her mother always found the positive in people;

she was filled with kindness, love and a giving spirit. Her life was centered around her husband and her children. Even though her dad presented a gruff exterior, he had a heart of gold. He was a

dedicated and caring physician who could often be found late at

night sitting by a patient’s bedside. He was well-respected in the

community and an excellent surgeon. He was a faithful servant of God and a dedicated family man.

Estelle was blessed to attend St. Mary on the Hill Elementary

School and Aquinas High School, where she graduated in 1972.

The education and experiences that she received at the two schools provided her the solid foundation on which to build her future.

She has been very active in school and community organizations,

volunteering her time freely in support of the Youth Association for Retarded Citizens, the American Red Cross, Lynndale Day Camp,

42

and many clubs and organizations at Aquinas. She later attended the University of Georgia and Augusta College, earning both an undergraduate and Master degree in Education, with a focus on Special Education.

In 1986, she married a fellow Bulldog fan whom she met

at the Sugar Bowl in 1983, Byron Duncan. They have three

wonderful children: Sean and his wife Jennifer, Matthew and

Megan. In addition, they have been blessed with two delightful

granddaughters, Riley and Emma. Estelle loves the time that she

gets to spend with her granddaughters; they make her heart sing! Sean, Jennifer and Matt have been members of the Society and

Megan was inducted into the Society at the 2019 Grand Marshal’s Ball.

Estelle devoted her entire career to supporting individuals

with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live and work

successfully in the community. After 43 years of service in the field, she fully retired in February 2017. But even before her retirement, Estelle was a regular volunteer at the Miller Theatre; completed

training at Pregnant Choices, serves on the Georgia Intellectual/ Developmental Disabilities Advisory Council and serves as

treasurer for the Georgia Chapter of the American Association on Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities.

She is a life-long member of St. Mary on the Hill currently

serving as a Eucharistic Minister, wedding director, member of the Apron Ministry, member of the Hospital Ministry, chairperson

Patrick's Day!

of the Parish Partnership on Disabilities, RCIA sponsor, and faithful

Estelle is a descendant of Thaddeus and Ann Foody Mulherin

adorer at the Adoration Chapel for over 20 years. She is also a member

of County Mayo, Ireland. Her great grandfather, William Andrew,

State President and Division Treasurer. She is thankful for her many

in December, 1851. They landed in Charleston and moved to

of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, where she serves as the blessings and enjoys giving back to her faith community.

Some of Estelle’s favorite Irish memories include attending St.

Patrick’s Day parades in Savannah before Augusta began having

them; attending the 1987 parade just eight days before her oldest son was born. She joined the Irish American Heritage Society in the late 1980’s and has enjoyed watching her children being inducted into

the society. In 2009, the family embarked on a two week trip of a

lifetime to Ireland, where they flew into Dublin airport. There she

emigrated with his mother and siblings from Ireland to America

Augusta two years later. One of his sons, Francis Xavier, was Estelle’s grandfather. Descendants of the Mulherin clan include the families

Mulherin, Schweers, O’Dowd, Cashin, O’Connor, Brittingham, Lyons, Cooney, Grady, Wheeler, Mahoney, Andrews, Lawless, Land, Owen,

Foran, Thebaud and many others! Estelle is part of the core group that plans the Mulherin Family Reunions, which are held every five years. Needless to say, the family reunions are huge!

When Estelle received “The Call” informing her of her selection

finally understood the meaning of “forty shades of green”. After a few

as Irish Lady of the Year, she was speechless, then immensely

breakfast homes throughout. It was an overwhelming and emotional

have received this honor in previous years and was so honored to be

days in Dublin, she traveled around the country, staying in bed and

trip; the beauty of the countryside, the history, the churches, the people and the roadside grottos to the Blessed Mother were awesome. For

twelve years Estelle was an Irish Dance mom! Her daughter started

Irish Dancing in kindergarten and continued through her Junior year at Aquinas. Attending competitions all over the Southeast, making

new friends, rolling hair in foam rollers, experiencing traditional Irish customs and music and singing competitions were just a few of the memories made during this time!

overwhelmed and humbled. She thought about all the great ladies who named this year’s recipient.

Please join us in honoring the 2019 Irish Lady of the Year, Mrs.

Estelle Mulherin Duncan.

The Jack amd Marian Scherer Family

The Irish-American The Irish American

Heritage Society is honored to announce the 2019 Irish Family of the Year, the Jack and Marian Scherer Family.

Both sides of the Scherer Family have deep roots in Ireland.

Jack’s mother, Bernadette Godby, sailed with her family from

Cork, Ireland to New York where she met and eventually married John Gottlieb Scherer. Jack was the youngest of their eight children.

Marian’s mother, Anne Denahy, came from Millstreet in

County Cork, Ireland. She immigrated to the United States in

1887, and later married Robert B. Arthur in Augusta, Georgia. Together they had six children, including Marian Scherer and Louise Thompson, the 1995 Irish Lady of the Year.

46

When the United States was drawn into World War II, Jack

and Marian each enlisted in the United States Navy. They met

while stationed together and served together until the end of the war. They were married in 1946, and Augusta their home. They

have five children, John, Jr., Patricia, Daniel, Anne, and Marian. The children grew up knowing the importance of their Irish

heritage and the significance of St. Patrick to their Catholic faith. Jack and Marian have thirteen grandchildren and eighteen greatgrandchildren. They frequently traveled with friends to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah.

Prior to the formation of the Irish American Heritage Society,

when not celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah, Marian for many years organized a group of ladies and men to celebrate

On that particular occasion, two distinct groups who shared a

common goal of having a big parade in Augusta to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day came together. One was the group of Augustans

and another was a group from Savannah, who missed the parade

a reality. However, in 1987 the Society honored her memory by of the Year. The award is given to a true Irish lady in appreciation of her continued support of community programs, her unselfish

assistance to those in need and her tireless efforts to improve the welfare of her Irish brethren - just as Marian Scherer lived her life.

Their son John was the Society’s first Parade Chairman,

St. Patrick's Day 2019

2019 Grand Marshal

Mr. Timothy Scott Reagan

The Irish-American Heritage Society is

pleased to announce the 2019 St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal, Mr. Tim Reagan. Our 2019 St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal was born in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas and is the seventh of ten children – he was born into a true Irish Catholic Family. Due to his father’s military career, he has lived in many different states around the country as well as in Germany. He moved to Augusta in 1976, and attended Westside High School and Augusta College. Since moving to Augusta, he and his family have made tremendous positive impact on the Augusta Catholic community and the Irish American Heritage Society. He was the 2002 President of the Society, as was his father in 1987, and his brother in 1998. His mother was honored

as the Irish Lady of the Year in 2004, and their family was honored as the first recipients of the Irish Family of the Year in 1989. He is following in the footsteps of his father, as his dad was honored as the Grand Marshal in 1992. When asked ask if he would accept the nomination as the 2019 Grand Marshal, he immediately said, “No, I’m not deserving of that and I’m not old enough to be the Grand Marshal”. I asked him to sleep on his initial refusal and to reconsider and that I would contact him in the morning. But I texted him later that evening and asked him to reflect on this, “Every person in the room who voted for the Grand Marshal tonight knows exactly who you are, how old you are and what you have done and continue to do for this society. The fact that your immediate reaction was that

IAHS 2019 Grand Marshal

49

you were undeserving of the honor is exactly why you were chosen”. This year’s Grand Marshal is a man of great character and humility and possesses a fervent devotion to his family, his church and this Society. He is a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, a member of the Patrick Walsh Knights of Columbus Council 667. He has served on the Board of Directors of Child Enrichment, is a Past President of the Professional Contractors and Estimators Association and is currently helping the officers as a member of our Board of Directors. If you ever ask for help, he is one of the first to volunteer and can always be counted on to go out of his way to assist. He is married to the love of his life, the former Lisa Carleen Smith. It is with great honor that I introduce your 2019 Grand Marshal – Mr. Timothy Scott Regan.

IRISH-AMERICAN HERITAGE SOCIETY 2019 Mass

One of the original intentions of the founders of the Irish American Heritage Society was to begin the day with a Mass at Most Holy

Trinity Catholic Church (formerly known as St. Patrick’s). This tradition has continued since the first celebration and parade in 1978. The Society wishes to invite all residents and visitors to join us for Mass at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church at noon on St. Patrick’s Day.
