Incredible Resilience I had an appointment with a 60-yearold diabetic patient I’ve been seeing for about 10 years. We’ve become like old friends. As I was reflecting on his care, I realized that my patient, although he has had diabetes for at least 10 years, has not developed any diabetic complications — no heart disease, numbness of his feet, or problems with his eyes. Medical Science + Divine Intervention Pastor Mark Berney was doing what he did most Sundays, leading a worship service, when he had a sudden cardiac event and passed out behind the pulpit. A heart patient for many years, Pastor Berney had reached the point where a heart transplant was necessary for his long-term survival. “I’m still overwhelmed, emotionally, by the dedication and skill and service of Dr. Nirav Raval and my AdventHealth transplant team,” Pastor Berny says. The artist Jefrё with part of his Points of Connection installation currently on display at Orlando Museum of Art.
Art can be very personal. From what it means to the observer, to the motivations of the artist. Sometimes, that motivation comes from life-changing moments. For Jefrё, one such moment came one day when, working as a landscape architect, he just didn’t feel right. He was having a heart attack. Triple-bypass surgery, performed by cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Jorge E. Suarez-Cavelier, saved his life and, Jefrё says, inspired a career change that has seen him go on to become an internationally renowned public artist. “I started thinking,” he says, “that if I was going to leave this Earth — what have I left behind?” His incredible installation of largescale multimedia sculptures, Points of Connection, is currently showing at Orlando Museum of Art and includes art relating to his health journey.

Incredible Faith It is a large part of my practice to help families navigate a successful pregnancy after a loss and have a “rainbow baby,” just like a rainbow that comes out after a storm. While I have a special place in my heart for each and every one of these families, I remember particularly a lovely family that had no explainable cause for the loss of their daughter a week prior to her due date. The mother was able to achieve pregnancy again, and made sure to come to my office early on.
To everyone’s surprise she was carrying twins. As the pregnancy progressed, we ran into complications, including high blood pressure and diabetes. Incredible Tenacity Every day, our patients prove how strong the human spirit can be. Recently, I treated a young mother of three children who was diagnosed with locally advanced larynx cancer. She was upbeat and motivated from the first treatment onwards. Despite requiring a tracheostomy and hospitalization, she persevered to complete the total course of treatment. She is now cancer-free and recovering well. She, like many of our patients, continues to inspire our team to do the absolute best that we can for them.

Incredible Trust When I was diagnosed with high-grade prostate cancer in 2016, my doctor told me that if I didn’t want to have any regrets, any ‘what-ifs,’ that I should have Dr. Vip Patel perform my prostate surgery.
