THE BEAR & MONARCH
BOHO, DUCK BREAST
AUGUST (1) FIVE In the heart of San Francisco, steps from City Hall and major theaters and museums, find a real gem from India, named after the date of Indian Independence. Decorated with country symbols like the peacock, the national bird, and the bejeweled maharaja Bhupinder Singh who once owned a 1,400-piece dinner set made of pure gold and was known for other indulgencies, August (1) Five is divine. Owner Hetal Shah joined forces with husband Rakesh Tondon and chef Manish Tyagi. They combined their experiences of regional Indian cuisines to create a menu of modern, bold and delectable dishes rooted in tradition yet enriched with innovation. Bar manager Jeremy Harris adds to the feast with jewel-like cocktails like The Jaipur Emerald and Rose of Sharon. Don’t miss out on the shrimp salad and the chicken tandoori. 524 VAN NESS AVE., 415.771.5900, WWW. AUGUST1FIVE.COM|

BOHO CAFE & RESTAURANT A bohemian free-spirited mix of different cuisines, a cozy dining room with comfy rustic furniture, and high-quality ingredients used in thoughtfully prepared dishes complimented by artisanal beers, international wines, and cocktails make Boho a place for casual din-
ing with distinct culinary sophistication. Don’t miss the duck liver pate on toast, a seasonal soup of fresh corn, cauliflower and ginger, and Liberty duck breast from a reputable Sonoma County farm. 3321 STEINER ST., 415.891.0242, WWW. CAFEBOHOSF.COM
MÄGO
Prominent California symbols in the restaurant’s name–the bear from our flag and the monarch butterfly that migrates annually through our state–set the stage for fresh, ingredient-driven, local seasonal cuisine. Chicken liver mousse with red onion marmalade is a must-try, same as pork and fennel sausage pappardelle with kale, sweet pepper and fried duck egg. You can’t go wrong with anything here! 222 SANSOME ST., 415.276.9620, WWW. THEBEARANDMONARCH.COM
When San Francisco-born, Sonoma-raised and the Culinary Institute of America-educated Mark Liberman moved to Paris after graduation, he honed his culinary skills at various eateries, from a Michelin two-star to small, family-owned restaurants in Provence and Bordeaux. Returning to his native San Francisco, the chef created quite a reputation for himself with the opening of popular venues, like AQ, Bon Marche Brasserie and Fenix before moving to Oakland, where he debuted his “magical” Mägo earlier this year. A rotating menu is strictly seasonal, featuring bursting-with-flavor surprises like asparagus and burrata cheese with golden raisins, potato gnocchi with squash, lobster cream and angelica, and smoked cabbage okonomiyaki (Japanese pancakes) with macadamia nut sauce. 3762 PIEDMONT AVE., OAKLAND, 510.344.7214, WWW.MAGORESTAURANT.COM THE BEAR & MONARCH

La Mar Cebicheria Peruana
From Gastón Acurio, Lima’s celebrity chef and an ambassador of Peruvian cuisine, comes this bustling waterfront eatery where diners’ conviviality is accompanied by ferry boat horn blasts calling for a ride across San Francisco Bay. Pisco sour flows like water, and colorful plates of cebiche, causas, anticuchos and lomo saltado crowd closely set tables at the lounge, the spacious dining room and the patio. CAFÉ DE LA PRESSE In this 1930s-style French café, you will be greeted by a magazine rack stuffed with French-language press, a wood-panel bar and white table cloth dining room with a decidedly Parisian atmosphere. Pick from a wide selection of wines from famous winemakers, enjoy fries from a newspaper baggy, and satisfy your craving for French staples like onion soup, steak with peppercorn sauce, and profiteroles. 352 GRANT AVE., 415.398.2680, WWW.CAFEDELAPRESSE.COM
COCKSCOMB RESTAURANT Celebrity chef Chris Cosentino, one of the pioneers of the “whole animal” cooking concept, conducts his well-orchestrated kitchen in a 1942 building, hidden away in the SOMA district. San Francisco-themed art on the walls and the chef ’s collection of 100 small-production gins pair well with the city-inspired ingredients and flavors used in endlessly creative dishes. Try an unusual starter of crispy squid and pig ears. Get a daily special, like a whole lobster with pork belly. Be the envy of the dining room with a spicy roasted pineapple dessert with toasted coconut ice cream and passion fruit meringue. 564 4TH ST., 415.974.0700, WWW.WWW. COCKSCOMBSF.COM
HARRIS’ OLD FASHIONED
DONATO & CO. The brain child of Bay Area celebrity chef Donato Scotti, this cozy Berkeley restaurant was created in partnership with chef Gianluca Guglielmi to bring rustic Italian cuisine with a contemporary twist to pure perfection. Start with chicken liver and Marsala mousse with home-made citrus jam and farro crostini, or grilled Monterey Bay calamari with Mediterranean octopus and Sicilian caponata. You should never skip the pasta, especially squid ink spaghetti with Calabria peppers and tomato confit. 2635 ASHBY AVE., BERKELEY, 510.838.1131, WWW.DONATOANDCO.COM

OCTOPUS WITH GRILLED PEACHES
One of San Francisco’s greatest chefs, Mark Dommen is at the kitchen most nights, working hard alongside his dedicated team, so sitting at the Chef ’s Counter is a treat for all senses. Before getting a taste of grilled Spanish octopus of incredible tenderness and green melon salad with fresh cucumbers and lemon vinaigrette, watch the creation of these masterpieces, hear the sizzle and inhale the aroma of bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin, or roasted duck breast with brandy jus–the menu staples garnished with seasonal grilled peaches or baby turnips.

Crazy Craft Beer Experiences Forget Rice-a-Roni. Beer has been the San Francisco treat since Anchor Brewing began during the Gold Rush. Most experts credit Anchor with starting the craft beer movement in the 1970s and Bay Area breweries have been multiplying ever since. Today there are a myriad of ways to enjoy suds ... on the beach, at the farmer’s market and with some great Spanish tapas ... to name a few! RUTH CARLSON
ANCHOR BREWING COMPANY Start your journey in the Anchor Brewing Company’s art deco building on Potrero Hill. After the taproom tour, where you sample Anchor Steam, their flagship beer, visit their store; it sells beers you can only buy on site.
RADHAUS
Get your nature fix at Fort Mason National Park. Radhaus is a Bavarian beer hall with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over Golden Gate Bridge. The potato pancakes with smoked salmon are a must.
SAN FRANCISCO BREWING CO.
Longing for a German beer garden? Head to San Francisco Brewing Co. in Ghirardelli Square and grab a seat at a picnic table for a front-row seat to live music.

THIRSTY BEAR
LITTLE CREATURES
Escape to the tropics at Woods Island Club on Treasure Island. This brewery on the beach has a volleyball court and the best views of San Francisco.
Thirsty Bear says they’re the first and only organic brewery in town and they pair their fresh beer with Spanish cuisine. Visit when they have flamenco dancing.

Little Creatures in Mission Bay will change your mind about pub food. The menu of this Aussie import has beer-steamed salt springs mussels, and house-made pappardelle pasta with fennel sausage.
