This 5.2-acre urban park is DFW’s central gathering space and hosts a full slate of events year-round, such as yoga, concerts and films. BIG GAMES ABOUND IN BIG D How the Metroplex became the center of the sports universe
Covering more than 9,200 square miles, the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex covers an area that is larger than the states of Rhode Island and Connecticut combined. Made up of more than a dozen cities and over 7 million residents, it is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the United States. As the old saying goes, everything is bigger in Texas and nothing and nowhere exemplifies that state of mind quite like the Big D. Everything that the Metroplex does is big, flashy and over-the-top. In no other area is this sense of grandeur witnessed than in their sports franchises. For more than 60 years, the Metroplex has been at the front and center of sports in the United States. The area is home to six major league franchises and has been the host site to a Super Bowl, two NCAA men’s Final Fours and multiple championship boxing matches. It also annually hosts two NASCAR races and two PGA Tour stops and is home to a score of minor league franchises and dozens more college teams in dozens more sports. The stadiums built to house the big league franchises are some of the largest and most opulent palaces for professional sports in the world. The uninitiated might be asking 36

what sets these venues apart from other such arenas in the country. Read on for the answer. Big-time pro sports made its debut in the Metroplex in 1960 with the birth of the Dallas Cowboys. The team that became synonymous with style and flash would earn the moniker of “America’s Team” in the 1970s. A parade of legendary all-time greats have worn the star of the Cowboys; Roger Staubach, Bob Hayes, Bob Lilly, Tony Dorsett, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin have led the boys to five Super Bowl titles since the team’s debut. After calling the Cotton Bowl in Dallas and Texas Stadium in Irving home, owner Jerry Jones moved his team to the Taj Mahal of the NFL, AT&T Stadium, in Arlington in 2009. Home to one of the world’s largest high-definition video screens (measuring a staggering 11,520 square feet), “Jerry’s World,” as it is colloquially known, hosted the Super Bowl in 2011, the College Football National Championship Game in 2015 and Wrestlemania 32 in 2016. It has become the gold standard against which all other football stadiums in the country are measured. “AT&T Stadium could be considered the mecca of sports

Rangers will move into a new stadium, Globe Life Field, the first closed-roof stadium in Rangers history. “Arlington is always referred to as the sports and entertainment capital of Texas,” said Decima Mullen, senior director of marketing and public relations with the Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We will soon have three world-class facilities adjacent to each other: AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Park and the new billion-dollar Globe Life Field, which is currently under construction. Beyond that, we are now home to the No. 1 eSports stadium in the United States with the introduction of eSports Stadium Arlington. Our fans are the best in the nation and we are dedicated to providing the best possible venues and experiences for both traditional and nontraditional sporting events.” The NBA made its debut in Dallas in 1980 (the city was previously home to the ABA’s Dallas Chaparrals from 19671973, now the San Antonio Spurs) with the arrival of the Dallas Mavericks. In 1993, the NHL came to town with the arrival of the former Minnesota North Stars. With their installation in Big D, the name morphed to the Dallas Stars.

stadiums over the last decade,” said Michael James, the North Texas regional correspondent for Stadium Journey, a site that specializes in reviewing sporting venues from the fan perspective. “I moved to the DFW Metroplex in 1999, so I have been following Dallas sports teams, regularly, for the last 20 years. [The Metroplex] is Dallas Cowboys country. The city thrives on the Cowboys.” In 1972, the Cowboys were joined on the local sports scene by Texas’s second entrant into Major League Baseball when the latest incarnation of the Washington Senators moved to Arlington, becoming the Texas Rangers. For 20 years, the Rangers called Arlington Stadium home. Aside from being the final stop in the Hall of Fame career of the great Nolan Ryan and the beginning of the career of the great Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez, the Rangers proved to be more of a frustration to their fans than a delight for the bulk of their early history. The team moved to their current home, Globe Life Park, in 1994 and their fortunes changed almost overnight. Division titles began in 1995 and the Rangers made back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011. In 2020, the

“The access to professional and amateur sports in North Texas is phenomenal,” said Marla Roe, Visit Frisco’s executive director. “Sports is a major pillar of our metropolitan economy and I think most people enjoy a better quality of life from having all of these venues and teams in their backyard. Being centrally located also allows us to have fans from all over the country easily travel here. For Sports City, USA, having eight professional teams headquartered or playing here in Frisco, our residents never have to stray very far from home to enjoy exciting sports experiences.” The Mavericks and the Stars have enjoyed periods of success, bringing championships to the city. The Mavs made the NBA Finals in 2006 and brought home the prize in 2011, led by future Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki. The Stars made backto-back trips to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1999 and 2000, thanks to NHL greats Mike Modano and Brett Hull, and took home the Stanley Cup in 1999. In 2001, the teams moved into the American Airlines Center in the middle of downtown Dallas. Built on the site of an old power plant in Victory Park, the unique design resembles an airplane hangar. In 1996, Major League Soccer (MLS) arrived on the scene with the Dallas Burn. Owned and operated by one of the first families of Texas sports, the Hunts, the team changed its name to FC Dallas in 2005 in time for its move to Toyota Stadium in Frisco and has been a hit with fans ever since.

The former Detroit/ Tulsa Shock brought with them three WNBA championships when they moved into College Park Center on the campus of the University of Texas—Arlington. “The best way to describe why DFW is great for sports is ‘availability,’” said James. “The American Airlines Center is one of the most fan-friendly arenas in the country. Globe Life Park, although in its final season, is still a great place to watch baseball. AT&T Stadium [in Arlington] could be considered the mecca of sports stadiums over the last decade. When many think of Cowtown, as Fort Worth is affectionately known, they picture the cowboy-led cattle drives that amble down Exchange Avenue twice a day in the Stockyards National Historic District. What may not always come to mind is that Fort Worth is also the “museum capital of the Southwest” and home to the third-largest arts district in the nation. There are five major museums spanning the world’s history of art and artifact located just blocks from each other, all surrounded by yet more museums, cultural venues and historically significant stopping points.
So how did a city that was first established as an army outpost in 1849, later playing a huge part in the American Longhorn cattle trade, come to be the home of everything from Andy Warhol’s silkscreened Marilyns to two Claude Monet masterpieces, of world premiere plays to big-budget musicals starring Broadway talent? The answer: A population’s desire to prove it could be a place where both cowboys and culture are welcome. There are more than a dozen museums in Fort Worth proper, and unsurprisingly many of them focus on the area’s WHERE GUEST B OOK

Western past. Besides the Stockyards Museum, housed in the historic Livestock Exchange Building, and the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum and Hall of Fame, which is dedicated to telling the stories of Quanah Parker, the Buffalo Soldiers, Sitting Bull and more, there is also the newly renovated National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. A $5.5 million rejuvenation of the second floor—and a new name, the Kit Moncrief Galleries—has built an exhibit dedicated to exploring the special bond between women and their horses, all through the lens of many of the Cowgirl Hall of Fame’s 750 honorees. These include pop-culture icons like Annie Oakley and Patsy Cline and fearless trailblazers like livestock expert Temple Grandin. The Old West theme continues at the Amon Carter Museum, where the late Fort Worth Star-Telegram founder’s extensive personal collection of American art has been on display since 1961. Expect to find everything from paintings by Winslow Homer, Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell, to sculptures by Lincoln Memorial artist Daniel Chester French, along with a collection of 45,000 photographic prints that make the museum one of the country’s major repositories of American photography. Likewise, the
Sid Richardson Museum in Sundance Square specializes in more works by Remington and Russell, along with others who reflected both the romance and reality of the American West through their art. The museum welcomes more than 50,000 visitors annually. Many of Fort Worth’s more recognizable museums are located within the Cultural District, an easily walkable, parklike setting found just a few blocks west of downtown. Glance one way, and you’ll see the striking vertical lines of Tadao Ando’s Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. It displays postWorld War II art in a permanent collection that includes almost 3,000 works and is the largest collection of modern art outside of New York City. Look the other way, and see the rolling curves of Louis I. Kahn’s Kimbell Art Museum, which is flooded with natural light and counts Rembrandt, Monet, Caravaggio, Matisse, Mondrian, Picasso, Degas, and even the first painting ever done by Michaelangelo among its permanent collection. Renzo Piano, one of the world’s leading museum architects, designed the expansion that debuted in 2013. Scratch that scientific itch nearby at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. Yet another Wild West com-

city’s center. But a true jewel in the arts crown is Bass Performance Hall, a classic European-style opera house adorned with two 48-foot-tall angels sculpted from Texas limestone by Marton Varo. The inside is just as incredible, with a Great Dome measuring 80 feet in diameter and artfully painted by local artists Scott and Stuart Gentling. The hall is the permanent home of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Texas Ballet Theater, Fort Worth Opera and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and Cliburn Concerts series, as well as the stop for national touring Broadway shows brought in by Performing Arts Fort Worth. The astonishing classical pianist Van Cliburn brought fame to Fort Worth in the 1960s, when a competition founded (and funded) by the president of the National Guild of Piano Teachers was established in his honor. The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition is a quadrennial contest attracting top talent from around the world, with the winners and runners-up receiving substantial cash prizes and concert tours at world-famous venues. Whether through music, theater, art, or mementos from the area’s rich Western history, Fort Worth has placed a priority on preserving and nurturing its culture. Though it can hold its own against global arts leaders, there’s no mistaking that when you’re visiting Fort Worth, you’re in a place like no other.

ponent is found here in the 10,000-square-foot exhibition known as the “Cattle Raisers Museum,” which employs lifesize steer replicas and antique accessories to illustrate the industry’s impact on society. But you’ll also find a three-storyhigh steel beam from the World Trade Center’s North Tower as part of a permanent 9/11 tribute, along with “Tornado Alley” and “DinoDig,” replicating a local paleontological field site. In the center of the Cultural District, next to the Will Rogers Memorial Center, is a distinctive domed building that’s home to the largest performing arts organization in Tarrant County. Casa Mañana, or “the house of tomorrow” as the original structure was dubbed in 1936, stages acclaimed productions of musicals, cabarets and children’s theater. First constructed by Amon Carter as part of the Texas Centennial Celebration, the (then-outdoor) theater featured the world’s largest revolving stage and accommodated 4,000 guests. Broadway producer Billy Rose staged an elaborate revue with showgirls, dancers, and beauty queens, a large moat surrounding the stage and fountains projecting a wall of water that doubled as the stage curtain. It would be a little more than two decades before Casa Mañana returned, this time housed in the geodesic aluminum dome. Fort Worth is home to a thriving theater scene, with the award-winning Stage West, Circle Theatre, Amphibian Stage Productions and Jubilee Theatre all located near the

RAISING THE STEAKS “Top Chef ” alum John Tesar’s steakhouses are the toast of Dallas. He opens up about his influences, DFW’s dining scene and living and working in the Big D. INTERVIEWED BY JENNIFER MCKEE
What first drew you to cooking?
The ability to stay at the beach all day and surf with my friends. I was lucky, I grew up in the Hamptons. I fell in with the cool kids, surfers and skateboarders, who all worked in this pub in Westhampton Beach called Magic’s Pub, which is no longer there. It was the local gathering place. I made bloody mary mix and tuna fish sandwiches. Every soap opera star, random movie star and Wall Street executive walked through there. I fell in love with the energy. How would you characterize the culinary scene in Dallas?
It’s ever-growing, ever-changing. I think we went through a serious 44

growth spurt in 2010. We’re in a very undefined yet saturated time in the Dallas restaurants. With so much competition, how do you stay on top of your game?
I stay on top of the quality, and we interact with our employees, I try to get myself out there as much as possible at events, both local and national, and keep progressing the product. It’s like a bridge, at a restaurant. Every day you walk to one end, then you’ve got to come back to the other end. It’s repetition. That’s the hard part. Keeping employee retention, keeping the restaurant fresh but still staying within your concept and not selling out to the newest trend.

Prior to Knife, seafood was what I was known for. I grew up on Long Island, and I worked for Rick Moonen [at RM Seafood in Las Vegas]. I think seafood is the most creative thing out there. What’s your best tip for cooking

Put your head down and cook. I know it sounds cliché. But if you work hard, something good will always come from it. I believe that to be true. Outside of your own, what are your favorite restaurants in Dallas?
I’m a big fan of Japanese food so I love Tei-An and Tei Tei. I don’t eat [at Bullion] a lot, but Bruno [Davaillon] is extremely talented in the classic French way. I’m a big fan of Dean Fearing [of Fearing’s restaurant] just as a human being. Are you a Dallas or NY sports fan?
Baseball, I’ll always be a NY Yankees fan. I was a season ticket holder for 20 years. I saw Mickey Mantle hit his 500th home run. I’ve been going to games since I was 6. Football, I’m trying to become a Dallas Cowboys fan. I think the Cowboys did an amazing job with the stadium. I want to see what they do in the next few years.
