Flamingo Gardens

Maltz Jupiter Theater
A small group with a passion for theater purchased and renovated this premier venue in 2001. The non-profit produces shows serving more than 100,000 people a year, including 600 students. When sitting down for a meal at Palm Beach newcomer Sant Ambroeus, it’s hard not to feel like you’ve been transported directly into a scene from the classic Italian film, “La Dolce Vita.” With its mid-century flare, sharply dressed staff and whimsical touches, the chic locale feels like a Milanese café circa 1960. This feeling has captivated the South Florida food scene ever since the Italian favorite arrived to Palm Beach’s Royal Poinciana Plaza in December 2016 and quickly became the epicenter of the neighborhood. “We have customers that come in the morning for coffee, people who at the same time every day go and have their espresso,” says Dimitri Pauli, partner of SA
Hospitality, the team behind Sant Ambroeus. “We’ve become part of the community.” And a chic member of the community at that. The 3,300-square-foot space oozes Italian glamour. The dining room boasts coral banquettes, rippled mahogany walls, dramatic Murano glass chandeliers and Terrazzo floors that emulate a wave pattern with colors of pink, black and cream – a nod to the restaurant’s proximity to the ocean. Water served as the main source of inspiration for the designers of the space, Studio Robert McKinley, who has helped design multiple Sant Ambroeus’. As it was the first U.S. Ambroeus outpost outside of the northeast, the

Palm Beach location took inspiration from its new South Florida location and its Italian heritage. “In the case of Palm Beach, we really wanted to touch on its locale and take some cues from the sea, using those color palettes and shapes,” notes designer Robert McKinley. “None of this is too overt, but we wanted it to feel like this coastal restaurant while still remaining true to its Italian and New York roots.” The design’s luxurious, yet decisive materials echoes the menu’s simple, elegant and ingredient-driven Italian cuisine. Elevated all-day dining is available in the main room with options like perfectly cooked al dente pastas, creamy risottos, crisp salads, buttery cheeses, pizzas, and tender fish and meats serving as the highlights. The menu stays true to its roots. The original Sant Ambroeus opened its doors in Milan in 1936 and quickly acquired a devoted following. In the early 70s, Pauli’s family bought the legendary spot and brought it to the United States in 1984 with its outpost on Madison Avenue. It has since expanded to locations including 24

Southampton, the West Village, Soho, as well as Sant Ambroeus Coffee Bar at Loews Regency in Midtown Manhattan and Sant Ambroeus Coffee Bar at Sotheby’s. For those looking for a more casual dining experience, they can grab a seat at the café for a quick sandwich, an espresso from its signature coffee bar, or pick up one of its many pastries that are made daily in-house. With its plush coral seating and pink wallpaper adorning the walls (the same print that can be found on the brand’s iconic wrapping paper), the café exudes a purposely confectionary feel that is meant to be sweet and playful, says McKinley. And since it’s South Florida, frozen desserts are always a good idea. Outdoors, guests can grab a scoop of gelato from the restaurant’s imported Italian ice cream cart. These small, yet special touches found throughout the space help to create an experience so authentic, it’s hard to find outside of Italy. “If you close your eyes—or step back and walk the plaza—it’s almost like you could be in Italy,” says Pauli.

The Antique Row Art & Design District in West Palm Beach has become the center of the universe for antique shoppers in the know. “We love the antiques district in West Palm Beach, on South Dixie Highway between Southern Boulevard and Belvedere Road,” said Simon Doonan, creative ambassador-at-large of Barneys New York, who, with designer Jonathan Adler, makes frequent visits to the district, even after moving away from the area several years ago. Not only is the area being swamped by New York designers, who regularly shop in it, but it is also touted by the mainstream media as the best shopping outside of New York and Los Angeles. “The Row attracts a range of shoppers, from well-known decorators, who fly in from New York and Los Angeles, to avid bargain scroungers,” reported The New York Times. The area, located in a once-forgotten neighborhood, boasts more than 52 shops and galleries offering an impressive range that includes 17th- to 20th-century antiques, period art-deco and modern furnishings, and fine and decorative arts. Although it has recently come into its own, so to speak, the world’s best interior designers have been shop-
ping Antique Row for more than 25 years. Architectural Digest, The New York Times, Art & Antiques, and House Beautiful are just a few of the publications to label the area as one of the East Coast’s premier antique shopping districts. “We love shopping on the West Palm Beach Antiques Row because there is such a wide variety to choose from,” says Todd Dyer Davis, co-owner (with Robert Sidney Brown) of Brown Davis Interiors, a design firm based in Miami with offices in Washington, D.C. “From period antiques to mid-century modern furnishings to beautiful shell mirrors and chandeliers, it’s all there. When shopping The West Palm Beach Art and Design District, we are able to source beautiful items.” DEEP IN THE DISTRICT The variety of antique shops in the district is astounding. There’s Coco House & Company (3625 South Dixie Highway, cocohouseandcompany.com), whose colorful French owner, Serge de Laville, specializes in 19th century English bamboo furniture, chinoiserie, and Art Deco furniture. In business for over eight years, de Laville counts among his celebrity clients Bruce Springsteen and Kevin Kline. Gary Rubinstein Antiques (3901A South Dixie Highway, WHERE GUEST B OOK

of the dealers, the eclectic nature of the different shops and most importantly, the value that is there. “If we were in New York, our prices would have to be way higher, so we can offer a great product for a better price.” TREASURE HUNT “While antiques rule in the district, there is also a great selection of art galleries and specialty shops, such as Heath & Company Lighting (3707 South Dixie Highway, heathlighting.com) and JF Art Gallery.” A more recent addition to the gallery scene on Antique Row is Renata Fine Arts (3633 South Dixie Highway, renatafineart.com), owned by Polish émigré Renata Metelska. The gallery specializes in exquisite original artworks ranging from 20th century to contemporary American and European art, including a selection by Florida artists. Renata’s next door neighbor is Faustina Pace, owner of her eponymous business, Faustina Pace Antiques & Interiors (3635 South Dixie Highway, faustinapace.com). Pace’s selections of furniture, textiles, accessories and garden accents procured from her travels to France, Sweden and Belgium reflect her easy, comfortable design sensibility. The Antique Row Art & Design District offers a cornucopia of treasures, making it worth the visit.

garyrubinsteinantiques.com), a favorite of top New York designers, specializes in fine 18th-, 19th- and 20th- century furniture and decorative arts, with an emphasis on Italian design of the late-18th and mid-20th centuries. With two locations along South Dixie Highway, James and Jeffrey Antiques (3619 and 3713 South Dixie Highway, jamesandjeffrey.com) has become a favorite among decorators for their selection of accent pieces and 18th- and 19th-century continental furnishings. “The aura of antique row is pure eclecticism,” says Gary Rubinstein, owner of Gary Rubinstein Antiques. “There is something for everyone. There are museumquality pieces as well as fun vintage items for the young collector.” Rubinstein, an antique dealer for 20 years with stores in New York, Connecticut, Miami and Palm Beach, opened a shop in the district three years ago. “We decided to open due to the fact that much of our New York City and European client base had homes in the area and were asking for us to be a presence in the community. The most beautiful space became available and we were on our way.” What does Rubinstein credit for the popularity of the district? The unique and constantly changing inventory

No longer only a spirit to be sipped slowly by your grandfather, cognac is being touted by many as the spirit of 2018. While such a claim seems like an exaggeration, area hotspots have confirmed that interest in the tasty brown liqueur is on the rise. “Cognac certainly has the potential to play a much larger role in the industry than it has in the past. It is for people that appreciate a more sophisticated spirit,” explained Ryan Zemel, General Manager at Fort Lauderdale’s Terra Mare. Here’s a quick lesson in cognac: as one of the original cocktail spirits, it’s a type of brandy made from doubledistilled white wine from grapes grown in the Cognac region
of France. It’s a complex spirit whose flavor profile changes from year to year—kind of like wine. Many high-end establishments are offering fancy flights of cognac for sipping. Eau Palm Beach Resort and Spa’s Stir Lounge serves Hardy, and their International Flight cognac option includes the posh brand’s Noces D’Or, Noces de Diamant and Noces D’Albatre, and costs $260. Not so hefty, considering that their most expensive bottle (Hardy L’Ete Lalique Crystal) will run you about $15,900. have cult status… the brands that you hear people calling for the most are D’usse, Hennessy, Rémy, and Martell,” Asare-Appiah added. Morreale cautions people to not be afraid to try cognac. “Too many consumers think of cognac as an overpriced marketing product, rather than as an authentic spirit with history. It’s been around for centuries and works as a great base spirit in cocktails. Do not fear it.” If you’re still cautious, we get it, so were we. But after sampling a handful of tasty concoctions across town—it’s a tough job—we found cognac to be a delightful new addition to our imbibing lineup.

It is made with cognac, mango, passion fruit, pineapple and habanero-infused simple syrup. This cocktail uses ingredients sourced here in Palm Beach.” NYY Steak at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek offers a pricey Royal Sidecar ($500) made with Remy Martin Louis XIII, Grand Marnier Cuvée 1880, lemon juice and an orange twist, served in crystal. “It’s a luxury spirit that tells a story and has complexity. You can compare drinking a great cognac to drinking a wonderful glass of wine. It’s traditionally a spirit that is sipped; however, we’re looking to add more character to classic cocktails and introduce ultra-premium cocktails with it,” explained Noel Morreale, the vice president of food and beverage at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. Lighter on the wallet, Honor Bar in Palm Beach serves up their Vieux Carre ($16), made with Hardy VS Cognac, Bulleit Rye whiskey and Punt e Mes, an upbeat cocktail that still possesses some complexity the French liqueur is known for. Miami-based Bacardi has also seen an uptick when it comes to cognac sales. Their Jay Z-backed D’usse brand is a bold new expression of VSOP and XO Cognac crafted at the Chateau de Cognac, where award-winning cognacs have been made over the last 200 years. “There has been a rise in brown spirits in general over the last 10 years and this has helped drive new consumers to the cognac category who are looking for something new. Consumers are trying it in cocktails as bartenders are experimenting with cognac again,” Bacardi senior portfolio ambassador Colin Asare-Appiah explained. It certainly helps that rock stars and celebrities are promoting the other brown liquor. “Cognac has a close relationship with popular culture and advocates for the category have always included it in their lifestyle and some brands within the category

Jonathan Huberdeau was speed skating at age four and playing hockey at five. No surprise, then, that the 24-year-old Quebec native has quickly established himself as an indispensable part of the Florida Panthers and a rising star in the NHL. After making the team’s starting roster in the 2012-2013 season, he scored his first league goal with his very first shot. And he became the first player in Panthers history to win the Calder Memorial Trophy, awarded annually since 1937 and the NHL equivalent of a “Rookie of the Year” award. Huberdeau continues to prove his value with every play — like an under-the-wire tiebreaking goal in February that clipped The Red Wings and left Panthers fans purring. All this after recovering from a dramatic Achilles tendon injury that

HOLLYWOOD A visit to Hollywood means learning about the “Broadwalk” and the traffic circles. The Broadwalk is a paved beachfront walkway that separates the sand from the shops and restaurants, and provides a relaxed, low-key vibe to the area. And the circles are the traffic feature that break up Hollywood Boulevard. A mile or so inland from the Broadwalk, in downtown Hollywood, the restaurants and bars bustle at night around Young Circle. PERFORMING ARTS FLORIDA GRAND OPERA Florida Grand Opera stands as one of the oldest performing-arts organizations in Florida.
