J. STEVEN MANOLIS WHAT ART CRITICS AND HISTORIANS ARE SAYING...
ROCKET MAN
BY BRUCE HELANDER
The eventual ďŹ rst generation “starsâ€? of abstract expressionism were a phenomenon largely due to their remarkable critical acclaim and their international shocking innovation, which reconďŹ gured the way we perceive contemporary art. When I ďŹ rst discovered the abstract expressionist/constructivist works of Miami-based painter J. Steven Manolis, I immediately was reminded of a similar visual energy that could trace its origin all the way back to de Kooning. Manolis’ impressive career now has a metaphorical link to a missile launching, where the sky’s the limit and the artist’s orbit of ongoing critical praise seems inďŹ nite. Manolis keeps an aggressive 7-day-a-week studio schedule, and now, like the abstract artists before him, is receiving very positive accolades from respected critics. Like a line from Elton John’s famous song â€œâ€ŚAnd I think it’s gonna be a long, long, time,â€? before we see another phenomenon like J. Steven Manolis! Having followed the developments of the art world over the past forty years, coupled with writing extensively about the acceleration of artists’ careers, particularly during my tenure as Editor-in-Chief of The Art Economist and former Provost of the Rhode Island School of Design, it’s only natural for me to distinguish certain common denominators that seem to hold true to a proven formula for achievement. Taking a close look at the developmental aspects of some of the very best American artists that certainly are identiďŹ able winners in history, it is interesting to observe that some of the most notable success stories were combined with a dazzling talent and a burning ambition to prevail. Sixty years later, after the height of the abstract expressionist period, the creative playing ďŹ eld is considered by many to be ďŹ nally level in terms of sheer talent and genuine opportunity. It’s only right that the art world is acknowledging independent artists with substantial innate ability and who also avoid jumping on a fashionable political bandwagon to get attention. Those artists who are moving forward quickly because of their sheer talent and determination are good bets to keep an eye on, as they are the ones that seem to generate the most excitement and eventually the most return on an adventuresome art collector’s initial investment. —Bruce Helander is an artist who writes on art, with an emphasis on South Florida. He is a former White House Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and is a member of the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. His work is represented in more than ďŹ fty museum permanent collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and Guggenheim Museum. He is a frequent contributor to Simply the Best, as well as The HufďŹ ngton Post.

“When it comes to Color, and the intellectual pursuit of ‘Communicating Through Color,’ Wassily Kandinsky’s longawaited heir-to-be is J. Steven Manolis, whose works signal an ebullient 21st century renaissance of the long absent glories of Abstract Expressionism.â€? DONALD KUSPIT Leading Art Critic and Renowned Historian New York City “J. Steven Manolis is one of the foremost practitioners of Abstract Expressionism today, his brilliant brushstrokes as bewitching as those of AbEx forefather Clyfford Still (originally from North Dakota). Manolis’ REDWORLD is a display of passion, productivity and powerful technique.â€? ELIZABETH SOBIESKI Former Contributing Editor, The Art Economist; Arts writer, The HufďŹ ngton Post, Cosmopolitan New York and Los Angeles “There’s so much well-made but facile, unfelt abstraction around these days that it can come as a shock to be confronted by the real stuff. And that’s what J. Steven Manolis unfailingly provides. Each and every piece generates an energy, which is at once explosively physical and evidence of a mind at work. Like the birth of a world.â€? ANTHONY HADEN-GUEST British-American writer and art critic The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Slade Business Journal New York and London “A trajectory of Manolis’ current work reveals that the artist has scrupulously mastered and applied both the techniques and chromatic relations identiďŹ ed with celebrated artists... besides Jackson Pollock, we ďŹ nd elements of Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Dubuffet, Adolph Gottlieb and Clyfford Still. As Manolis’ work chooses and dominates so many of the signature methods of his forebearers it is still remarkable that the artist elicits a dynamic depth that we associate with Hans Hofmann.â€? “Baseball is back, and we’re Just Gettin’ Started,” writes new Marlins CEO Derek Jeter in his opening day program book. Just Gettin’ Started is the team’s new rally cry. While the Marlins have been a team (formerly the Florida Marlins) since 1991, they haven’t always had a great track record. That, paired with fair-weather fans in a town that doesn’t worship its sports teams like most other major American cities, means the Marlins have been up against a lot. Whether this starpowered rebirth will make real waves with this underdog team is yet to be seen, but one thing’s for sure—we’ll always root for our hometown team. Play ball.

Plant Miami serves sophisticated plant-based food in a serene setting.
GREEN GOODNESS Plant-based eating goes mainstream in the Magic City.
OPPOSITE PAGE AND THIS PAGE: COURTESY PLANT MIAMI.
BY OLEE FOWLER
Not too long ago, the words “vegan” and “gourmet” weren’t found in the same sentence. The cuisine was typically reserved for health-focused eateries and obscure cafés—not buzzed-about restaurants. But the tides are turning, and plant-based eating has officially gone mainstream with a slew of notable spots that is turning even the most tried-and-true carnivore into fans. Adding to plant-based eating’s newly found “it-factor” is mega-club mogul David Grutman—the man behind perpetual hot spots LIV, Story, Komodo and OTL—who recently brought Toronto-based vegan concept, Planta,
to South Beach. The instantly popular restaurant serves plant-based fare in a chic setting. The menu includes vegan spins on classic dishes like cauliflower tots, sweet potato queso, charred octopus created with king oyster mushrooms, and even sushi and nigiri made entirely out of plant-based ingredients. “Eating a plant-based diet is more than just a trend, it’s the way the world is moving. Simply put, people want to know where their food is coming from,” notes Grutman. “We want guests to leave Planta asking themselves, ‘Wow, did I just eat a fully plant-based meal?’”
Toronto, Planta, a South Beach. WHERE GUEST B OOK

But Planta isn’t the only eatery in town garnering praise from vegans and non-vegans alike. In Miami Beach’s Sunset Harbour neighborhood is Soul Tavern, which offers vegan and vegetarian offerings in a laidback, gastropub outpost. Its comfort food-inspired menu boasts dishes like pizzas topped with exotic mushrooms, ginseng, beets and lotus root; jackfruit-filled gyoza; and banh-mi sliders made with Korean barbecue tempeh. In true gastropub fashion, it also features a variety of beers, wine, a large sake list and a full bar. “Our menu is approachable. We recognize that healthful food doesn’t have to be complicated or intimidating,” explains Soul Tavern owner Jason Gordon. Brickell City Centre’s swanky Italian food hall La Centrale also offers vegan fare within its multi-level complex. While its vegetarian eatery Stagionale isn’t fully plant-based, the vegan-friendly options are abound. Vegans and non-vegans alike can feast on whole head of cauliflower Caponata, tofu stuffed eggplant with marinara sauce, a plethora of farm fresh veggies and more. An added plus: all meals begin with a cocktail glass filled with sweet cherry tomatoes and olive oil for dipping. For those looking for a high-end, gourmet vegan experience, head to Plant Miami in Wynwood’s Sacred Space. The sleek restaurant offers an elevated global menu created by executive chef Horacio Rivadero, whose offerings are all gluten-free, raw and vegan. The intricately designed dishes like the cacio di funghi made with kelp noodles and a decadent truffle cashew béchamel sauce or the harvest dumplings wrapped in a sweet potato coconut wrapper and topped with ginger foam are a testament to how elevated plant-based cuisine has become in recent years. “It doesn’t matter if you follow a vegan lifestyle or not. You’ll come in for a delicious meal and you’ll leave healthier and satisfied on all levels,” adds Gordon. Waterside vegan dining is even an option now in the Magic City, at Full Bloom. The Miami Beach spot has made a name for itself over the years with its plant-based cheese platters, spinach gnocchi, nori rolls and standout desserts like tiramisu, which all rival its views. But regardless of diet preference or palate, vibrant plant-based eating in South Florida is proving it’s more than a trend—it’s here to stay.

First, some clarification: There isn’t much surfing in the town of Surfside. Though the calming waves rolling over the turquoise waters onto perfectly tanned sand here are blissfully relaxing, the North Shore of Oahu it is not. But as long as you’re not looking to ride any killer swells, Surfside is Miami’s most peaceful place to enjoy the beach. Stroll the streets of Surfside, a little town just north of Miami Beach stretching from 87th Street to 96th Street, and find a town full of vibrant restaurants, unique architecture, calming beaches and even a little bit of history. Surfside was founded in 1935, when 35 members of the privately-held Surf Club on 90th street fought off annexation from Miami Beach and incorporated the town for $28,500. The population was a scant 50 residents at the time, but that independence is what has allowed the city to retain its unique character. The main drag along Harding Avenue is filled with low-rise art deco buildings and small businesses, a harkening back to Miami Beach before it went condo. Spots like Josh’s Deli sling duck fat matzo balls and overstuffed pastrami sandwiches, while The Carrot presses fresh juices and smoothies for visitors looking for a little less cholesterol. Down the street, Serendipity Creamery offers inven-

tive ice creams to cool off after a long day at the beach, with flavors like pear Riesling sorbet and cereal milk—if you like the taste of cereal milk. Local institution Flanigan’s also has an outpost in Surfside, where you’ll find wings that some claim are Miami’s finest, along with fresh seafood and flamebroiled burgers. There’s even a retro art-deco Walgreens that makes for an impressive architectural anchor for Surfside’s main street. Closer to the sand you’ll find the Surfside Community Center, where tourists can join residents for free yoga on the beach or Aqua Zumba (laugh, it’s infinitely harder than you think). There’s also a jogging path right along the sand, and a beach mostly populated by young families with a smattering of tourists. It’s a welcomed oasis from the crowds of South Beach; in Surfside you’ll hear mostly crashing waves interspersed with kids splashing in the water. Though it’s small, Surfside has no shortage of places to stay. Most impressive among them is the Four Seasons,

which rehabbed the historic Surf Club and turned it into the centerpiece of its new large-scale resort. The hotspot that welcomed names like Sinatra and Churchill decades ago has reinvented itself, and the old lobby is now the luxe champagne bar Le Sirenuse. Cheap it’s not, but worth the price to feel like a vacationing Rat Packer sipping bubbly by the ocean. It’s not all luxury digs here, though, as the Marriott Residence Inn sits just steps from the water, and the Grand Beach Hotel boasts a rooftop bar with a panoramic view of the ocean. It’s the best place to snap envy-inducing pictures to send to everyone you know stuck in cold weather, and an ideal spot for sunset cocktails or an occasional yoga class. The city is also among the most eco-conscious in Florida, where officials banned both plastic straws and Styrofoam in an effort to protect the local marine life. There’s also a turtle nesting program, which affords the opportunity to see sea turtles hatching from May to October. Those turtles have become such an integral part of Surfside life, they inspired the city’s Turtle Walk—a series of 13 sculptures of the Florida loggerhead turtle created by local artists. Renting a CitiBike to see them all might be the best way to take in the city.

DECO DREAMIN’ BY SARA LISS
Seen on everything from the opening credits of “Miami Vice” to the numerous postcards gracing every souvenir shop, the art deco buildings of Ocean Drive (and the surrounding area) have come to be as synonymous with Miami Beach as frosty cocktails and beach umbrellas. Over 800 art deco structures are found in South Beach alone, according to the National Register of Historic Buildings, making the main drags of Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue a parade of pastel and prewar flourishes. All of this was codified back in 1979 when a dedicated group of activists helped create The Miami Beach Architectural District (also known as Old Miami Beach Historic District and, its more popular name, Miami Art Deco District) and designated the area a U.S. historic district. And though Ocean Drive has become more commercial in the last few decades, several hotels have maintained their aesthetic integrity (and also their lawful obligation as part of a historic district) by restoring their facades and interiors to their former glory. The porthole windows, ship-like railings, sleek curves, glass blocks, shiny chrome and gleaming terrazzo floors transport us back to a time when Miami was developing its signature glamour and look. Croatian architect Anton Skislewicz designed both the Breakwater and the Plymouth hotels in 1936 and 1940, respectively, with many of the stylistic qualities of art deco design—the strong lines, the emphasis on symmetry—but with a decidedly more modern and mysterious ambiance. The Breakwater was restored in 2011 and remains an attraction for its aquarium-style pool encased with glass, allowing guests the luxury of overlooking the hustle and bustle of Ocean Drive. The Plymouth reopened last year as a hip hideaway a few blocks from the beach. 36

The Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club in Miami Beach is slightly north of South Beach and taller than most deco towers of the era. Originally designed by renowned art deco architect Roy France in 1940, the hotel reopened in the spring after a multimillion-dollar renovation. The makeover draws on the glamour and sophistication of the 1940s European Riviera. Farther up the beach, the Carillon Miami Wellness Resort will be celebrating its 60th anniversary as a Miami Beach icon this year. The newly renovated resort is all about the “luxury of wellness,” with a phenomenal spa, an enviable roster of recreational classes and an array of mental and spiritual resources (it helps that, up until recently, this was a Canyon Ranch). While most of the hotel was gutted and renovated, some art deco vestiges remain from its heyday, including its famous neon sign at the top of its landmark facade.

WHERE GUEST B OOK
