HABITATS & HUMANITY Water is just the beginning on a visit to Everglades National Park PHOTOS BY JIM ARBOGAST TEXT BY SCOTT ROUCH

Less than an hour away from the hustle and bustle of Miami and the allure of South Beach is a world unto itself in Everglades National Park. The nation’s largest subtropical park—designated an International Biosphere Reserve, a Wetland of International Importance and a World Heritage Site—has presented its grandeur since its establishment in 1934. President Harry S. Truman noted its diversity when he dedicated the park in 1947, saying in part “To its natural abundance we owe the spectacular plant and animal life that distinguishes this place from all others in our country.” The Everglades is home to a variety of plants and animals across its five separate habitats, including dry locales like the Pine Rocklands and Hardwood Hammock. Visitors are asked to keep a safe distance from endangered species, a note worth taking when that includes the American crocodile and Florida panther. 20

Airboat tours are a good way to get around, but there are different ways to take in all the park has to offer, and it may depend on which of the entry points you utilize. Take the Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) to the Shark Valley Visitor Center. Midway down Tram Road, (which can be walked or biked), is the Shark Valley Observation Tower. Get a birds-eye view of the River of Grass or to explore a hardwood hammock. Or, head to Payayokee Overlook, 13 miles from the Ernest Coe Visitor Center (Homestead) entrance. Everglades National Park is a home run no matter how you explore it.

CORAL GABLES Just south of Coconut Grove is this tourist-underrated Miami community with so much to offer. Home to world-famous, picturesque Banyan-lined streets and impressive Spanish-style architecture, Coral Gables (nicknamed City Beautiful) plays home to some of the most magnificent homes, parks and historic landmarks in Miami. Anchoring this vivid area is the glamorous Biltmore Hotel, which recently underwent a multimillion dollar renovation. The historic landmark is the epitome of relaxed luxury set inside classic Italian, Moorish and Spanish architecture, constructed in the 1920s. A favorite among celebrities, world leaders, socialites and more, the hotel has the largest pool on the East Coast, fine dining at French restaurant Palme d’Or and traditional and authentic Italian fare at Fontana. Down the road, in Downtown Coral Gables, are a myriad of cafes, shops, restaurants, bars, museums and galleries. Among them is Eating House, which serves up the kind of food your inner child would approve of—think Cap’n Crunch Pancakes and Tang Mimosas. Doc B’s is your happy-hour destination for inventive cocktails and fresh bites while Bulla Gastrobar is a go-to for Spanish tapas and perfectly balanced sangria. Also worthy of mention is Ortanique on the Mile for colorful Caribbean fare and M House, a luxe Euro spot with ultra-chic decor and healthy small dishes. Also not to be missed in picturesque Coral Gables is its lush and luxurious scenery. Fairchild Tropical Gardens has been a local treasure since 1938 and is the largest tropical botanical garden in the continental United States. Home to 83 acres of plants from around the world, the garden is a tourist mecca and photographer’s delight. Here you’ll find everything from 740 species of tropical, flowering trees to a two-acre rain-

COCONUT GROVE Once the hottest neighborhood in town, elite locals and in-the-know tourists flocked to the Grove (as it’s lovingly referred to in Miami) to imbibe, shop, dine, dance and most importantly, be seen. Local chef Michael Beltran has led the charge when it comes to fantastic new restaurant options. He opened neighborhood hot spot Ariete about three and a half years ago, serving modern American fare with a Cuban twist in an organic-chic, indoor/outdoor setting. Beltran recently debuted Chug’s, a Cuban-American diner dishing out cafecitos and breakfast sandwiches alongside pastelitos. The ultra swanky Bellini at the new Mr. C offers up delicious bellinis that the Cipriani restaurant group is famous for, along with classic rustic Italian dishes. For more classic Italian, head to the area’s stand-by, Sapore di Mare.

Bohemian-chic Isabelle’s Grill Room & Garden (located inside The Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove) features bright flavors from the land and sea, impressive craft cocktails and an extensive wine list, all served within an ultra sleek, yet warm and inviting, atmosphere. The Grove also has excellent shopping. Mainstream retailers like Bonobos, Warby Parker and Aesop sit alongside local boutiques like artsy and eclectic global gift haven The Bazaar Project, local fashion designer Ramona LaRue, trendy ready-to-wear shop Unika and high-end interiors and clothing spot, Market. Historic outdoor shopping center CocoWalk is getting a major overhaul and is set to open in the spring of 2020. While in the Grove, a must-see attraction is the magnificent property and museum, Viscaya, an early 20thcentury, Italian-inspired villa left to the city by tycoon James Deering. The palatial estate is a wonder from the decadent inside to the splendid outside gardens and waterfront grounds.

The original “It” neighborhood, Coconut Grove, is a hotbed of upscale dining and lush accomodations in addition to plentiful shopping. Take your pick: the Grove offers easy access to the water, plenty of green space to enjoy and attractions like the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens.
