The hunger games (no, not the scary ones) are easier than ever to play in Tampa Bay, where everything, from fine cuisine by James Beard-nominated chefs to arguably the nation’s best smoked fish dip, awaits. Equally interesting, some of the area’s most modern culinary offerings— both in terms of vibe and flavor—come packaged inside classic digs. More than ever, local developers are partnering with restaurateurs to create new spaces where dining figures big, as does the preservation of priceless bits of history, embodied in centuryold buildings and precious waterfront spaces. Ritzy Tampa Heights was the home of the city’s elite as it came into being in the early 1800s, about a mile from downtown. In recent years, it has enjoyed a renaissance; so, too, has the circa-1910 edifice that began life as a maintenance facility for Tampa’s streetcars. Alas, the auto revolution arrived, and as Americans fell in love with their cars, the streetcar warehouse went the way of all things. In the 1960s, it became home to Armature Works—a manufacturing facility that has since been redeveloped, though not renamed, into a 73,000-squarefoot, mixed-use facility, where views of the skyline (extra lovely from its rooftop bar, M.Bird), its workspace and a culinary marketplace have made it into a destination. Inside, soaring ceilings and exposed brick, beautiful furnishings and artistic touches meld seamlessly with the building’s original features. Food vendors abound: ramen-ya to refined Southern, pizza to plant-based. Armature Works’ culinary cred soared in 2019 when it added anchor restaurant Oak & Ola, a Euro-American venue from James Beard awardwinning chef Anne Kearney. “When we acquired this warehouse,” says Adam Harden, principal, SoHo Capital, the developers behind Armature Works and the 50-acre master-planned urban mixed-use area known as the Heights, “we could have used it as part of the façade and lobby for a high-rise, but it really needed more heart and soul.” So, they thought about how to put together a mix of uses to create a vital place—one that could operate 16 hours a day—while preserving much of the structure’s integrity, using
and re-using the elements of its construction. That it sits on the intersection of I-275 and I-4 is what could be considered developer synchronicity if such a thing exists. “It is actually the highest per capita traveled section of interstate on the whole Gulf Coast of Florida. That’s a fact: 205,000 average daily trips past that interchange. This is a meeting place, a crossroads,” says Harden. Culinary vendors were chosen with great care. “When we looked to create the market hall, we felt that the diversity of the vendors was what would engage people in the community, so we chose places we thought were cool, all of them local. No chains. And the space translates well. Visitors can bring their kids, as there’s room for them to run around, to play chess and checkers. It remains family-friendly. We have stroller yoga in the mornings, free movies on the lawn. But it’s a great place for business as well.” The structure, though reimagined, retains much of its original shape and features. The approach was very much “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” “We loved the aspect of the raw brick and exposed equipment, the overhead crane and the original skylights; they needed natural light to work on machinery in 1913,” says Harden. “The space had been painted green in areas and that patina

Beach is more to your taste, then award-winning Chef Michael Mina had you in mind (in part, at least) when he opened Locale Market in St. Petersburg’s tony Mall at Sundial. Head here to pack a posh picnic hamper, whether you plan to dine al fresco at Vinoy Park, or take in a famous gulf sunset. Set up much like the compact and upscale city markets of New York, Locale is a gourmet grocery, restaurant, pizzeria, butcher, deli and bakery, which also features coffee, wine and ice cream shops—all rolled into one convenient location. Not enough variety? You’ll also find fresh seafood, available by the pound to prepare at home, or cooked to order. In St. Pete’s ever-gentrifying Edge District, foodies flock to the airy, open space of the Baum Ave. Market, a re-imagining in its own right, having been, in its most recent incarnation, a New Orleans-style bistro. Its ghost is long banished; the market is now a white, bright, multi-concept space with healthful (sort of ) vendors that locals and visitors can’t get enough of. The space represents a new way of thinking about community, and functions as a bit of an incubator for entrepreneurs looking to break into the hot St. Pete food scene, proving that it’s better to rethink existing space, rather than razing it and slapping up new digs. Baum Ave. Market’s very nature keeps things fresh and ever-evolving. A visit from month to month, or even from week to week, will most likely introduce you to new startups, ranging from vegan donuts to Lebanese sandwiches. Previously, Orlando transplant Valhalla Bakery’s oft-decadent and always-vegan (sometimes unbelievably so) offerings hit home here. Also on tap, Indian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and more, plus Modern Brine, offering, among other things, an omakase raw bar experience. William Murtagh, first keeper of the National Register of Historic Places, sums up our love of a building’s rebirth this way: “It has been said that, at its best, preservation engages the past in a conversation with the present over the mutual concern for the future.” The greater Tampa Bay area seems to be conducting this chat beautifully.
“We felt that the diversity of the vendors was what would engage people in the community, so we chose places we thought were cool, all of them local. No chains.”

became something we thought was cool, so we scrubbed the walls down, sealed them and hung onto that older feel.” He believes—and its clientele thus far shows—Armature is friendly to both business and leisure travelers. “It’s as casual or formal as you’d like it to be,” explains Harden. However, Tampa Heights isn’t the only locale that’s currently undergoing urban renaissance. If you’re yearning for ways to enjoy the city vibe, consider a visit downtown to Sparkman Wharf. This colorful waterfront destination rose, phoenix-like, from what was once the Channelside Bay Plaza retail center, and nestles its incredible culinary offerings into charming, repurposed shipping containers, a trend that continues to gather steam across the country. What will you find when you visit? A little bit of everything. Enjoy Tampa’s stunning weather with outdoor activities and lawn movies; find food that will suit the largest and most diverse groups, along with a sizeable outdoor bar—all within an easy stroll or Uber ride to neighboring venues, including Amalie Arena and the Florida Aquarium. But there’s more to this trendy area than meets the eye. You’ll find the essence of culinary excellence amid the cheerful space. James Beard 2017 semifinalist Chef Ferrell Alvarez, opened his Gallito Taqueria at Sparkman, while Beard semifinalist Chef Jeannie Pierola offers up Edison’s Swigamajig—equal parts dive bar and fish kitchen—which keeps visitors sated with both food and drink in true, Florida fish camp fashion. Pick any random afternoon, and you’ll find the downtown lunch crowd chowing alongside stroller-laden parents and tourists swilling craft beer and soft-tossing beanbags for cornhole. Visit during a weekend evening, and you’ll find the crowd embodies equal parts happy hour patrons, pre-event imbibers and post-urban exploration visitors, whether there for relaxation or revelry. If venturing out to hit the magnificent sands of St. Pete

If you’ve spent any time at all in the greater Tampa Bay area, then you’ve probably come to gather at least a passing knowledge of the area’s big-name attractions. From braving roller coasters at Busch Gardens, to taking in a Tampa Rays or Buccaneers game, to downshifting for some quiet reflection on one of the area’s many beaches, Tampa’s charms are well-documented. But there is much to discover within this vibrant community if you know where to look. Perhaps you weren’t aware that this corner of Florida takes its art seriously, and there’s no better place to get your fill than Downtown St. Petersburg. Waterfront museums and theaters, including the Dalí and the Museum of Fine Arts, beckon visitors to slow down and ponder incredible works. The lures of the Central Arts District include independent studios and myriad live music venues, while bookworms will likely seek out Grand Central District as the location for Haslam’s, the largest new and used bookstore in all of Florida, open since 1933. While visiting so close to Florida’s beautiful Gulf Coast, a trip to the shore may prove irresistible. Looking for the road less traveled? The beaches at the southern end of Pinellas County are the stuff of which dreams are made. Below the towering pink icon of The Don CeSar, the tiny town of Pass-A-Grille and its quaint National Historic District await. Art galleries and beach boutiques, a stretch of fairly undiscovered dunes for sunning and swimming, rooftop bars where the whole of the Gulf is laid out before you, are all tucked behind charming homes along a tiny sliver of waterbordered paradise.
It may be tempting to consider Tampa and the surrounding area a soaring metropolis. And that’s partly true. But dotting the area are also a surprising number of towns, each with its own personality. A tiny community with a Scottish name, Dunedin is well-known for the cultural nods to its sister city across the pond (its Highland Games are a big draw each spring), and also for being home to Honeymoon Island State Park and Caladesi Island, two of Tampa Bay’s loveliest beaches. Blocks off the water, though, its bustling little downtown is home to shops, bars and bistros. Local craft beer—Woodwright Brewing Company and 7venth Sun Brewing Company are just a couple—abounds, as do nearby additional imbibing venues that boast waterfront views. North of Dunedin, perhaps a 20-minute drive, the city of Tarpon Springs beckons with the legacy of the sponge divers who emigrated from their native Greece in the early 1900s. Dodecanse Boulevard, home of the picturesque sponge docks, is alive with sound of Greek music and the smell of Greek food; both are highly seductive. You have been warned. Your last stop for the day is Safety Harbor, a lively little burg on the west shore of Tampa Bay once thought to be the location of the famed Fountain of Youth. There are several places to make a spa appointment in town if that’s your desire, but otherwise, visitors enjoy strolling beneath mossy oaks on its quaint streets to peruse the shops or grab a bite. You might even pack a lunch and head to Phillippe Park, where pavilions and lush woodlands offer shade and the sloping shoreline. An altogether different, but equally beautiful Florida water view make for a gorgeous and relaxing respite.
ALL ABOUT TOWN
Tampa Bay TAMPA For nearly 130 years, people have been making Tampa Bay their vacation destination. In fact, railroad tycoon Henry B. Plant built the Tampa Bay Hotel in 1891 for his guests. Following Plant’s lead, Tampa is quite the hospitable host—just ask the nearly 14 million people who visit each year. There’s so much from which to choose— historical and cultural sites, thrilling attractions, amazing restaurants and shopping galore. And that’s not all. Venture beyond the city limits, out into Hillsborough County, and discover even more of what this exciting area has to offer. Tampa Bay boasts a whopping 361 days of sunshine each year, which makes it a coveted destination for those looking for a beach vacation—locals and tourists alike. A terrific way to view the impressive Tampa skyline is from Bayshore Boulevard, the world’s longest continuous sidewalk, where you can run, walk, rollerblade or bike without interruption. In addition to the great bay views, you may see manatees, sea turtles, ospreys or dolphins during your outing. 26

When it’s time to get wild, be sure to visit Big Cat Rescue. The largest accredited sanctuary in the world, located in Citrus Park in Tampa, it is home to more than 100 lions, tigers, leopards, bobcats and cougars that have been rescued. Get up close to these magnificent native wild cats and be mesmerized by their beauty. Another place to get a close-up view of animals is Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park, consistently recognized as among the best zoos in the U.S. Spend a day watching animals from throughout the world—from Africa and Australia, Asia and beyond—and learn about their habitats as well as efforts to protect these fascinating creatures. Additional animal encounters can be had at Busch Gardens Tampa; take a Serengeti Safari and feed lettuce to the giraffes; visit Lory Landing to make dozens of new feathered friends who’ll perch anywhere— your head, hands and shoulders—for a taste of the sweet nectar served in cups; at Kangaloom you can hand-feed the free-roaming wallabies and wallaroos. Fans of ABC’s “The Wildlife Docs” can visit the Animal Care Center seen on TV and observe Busch Gardens’ veterinarians as they provide daily care to more than 300 species. The lights of Downtown Tampa are reflected on the bay, as seen from the Riverwalk, home to Curtis Hixon Park and The Florida Aquarium.

For sports lovers it’s game on in Tampa, and there are plenty of different ways to play and watch. In March, Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees take to the diamond at George M. Steinbrenner Field for spring training; during the rest of the year, the minor league afflilate Tampa Tarpons make it their home. The Tampa Bay Storm, an arena football team, hits the gridiron in late spring and into summer, and the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers follow suit in the fall at Raymond James Stadium. Also in the fall, the National Hockey League’s Tampa Bay Lightning takes to the ice at Amalie Arena. If you’re ready “fore” golf, hit the links at any of the dozens of public, semi-private and private golf courses to tee off. For a dose of shopping and dining, International Plaza and Bay Street, adjacent to Tampa International Airport, is the most distinctive entertainment destination on Florida’s West Coast. This high-end mall features 200 specialty stores and more than 20 restaurants and bars, including Apple, Crate & Barrel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co., The Cheesecake Factory and The Capital Grille, plus Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Dillard’s and Renaissance Tampa International Plaza Hotel. There’s even a piece of Cuba—a small park on the west end of Ybor City is dedicated to Cuban poet and revolutionary José Martí and has been owned by the Cuban government since 1956. Today, its brick streets are lined with restaurants, shops and nightclubs, lighting up at night, when locals and visitors take to the area to enjoy the entertainment scene. Be sure to dine at The Columbia; at more than 100 years old, it’s Florida’s oldest restaurant. Ybor—or GaYBOR, a collective of 200-plus LGBTQ-friendly businesses—is home to one of the most thriving gay populations in the area, and hosts Tampa Bay Pride every March. Afterwards, relax with a bite at Timpano Italian Chophouse, or enjoy a glass of wine at the Wine Exchange Bistro & Wine Bar. Indulge in an afternoon of pampering at the Aveda Level Salon Spa, where specialists are ready to beautify and to melt away the day’s stress. Spanning the entire peninsula across the bay from Tampa is Pinellas County. The area has been named a “Top Place to Visit in the World” by The New York Times and Delta Sky, and with its rich diversity of natural beauty, culture and stellar dining, it isn’t hard to see why. Put the pedal to the metal when the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg takes to the streets of downtown St. Pete each spring. The Tampa Bay Rays call Tropicana Field outside of downtown St. Petersburg home; and the Trop offers another draw—it’s 72 degrees year-round under the dome, making it a wonderful way to cool down. Located on the Gulf of Mexico, St. Petersburg is a great starting point for a day of deep-sea fishing. Mark Hubbard of Hubbard’s Marina in Madeira Beach will navigate the waters and find the perfect spots for you to cast a line for redfish, snook, trout, flounder and more.

ALL ABOUT TOWN - GULF BEACHES
Gulf Beaches Though it’s the second-smallest county in all of Florida at 281 square miles, Pinellas County is big on beaches—35 miles of them, to be exact. The sugar-white, powder-soft sandy beaches found along the Gulf of Mexico each have their own personality, and they are the perfect playgrounds for kids and for kids at heart. It’s not only Floridians who think the beaches here are fantastic. TripAdvisor named St. Pete Beach (#3) and Clearwater Beach (#4) “Best Beaches in America.” The Gulf ’s calm waters provide the perfect conditions to get out and play. Take it easy and float under the sun, ride on a WaveRunner, or kick it up a notch and try stand-up paddleboarding. Or, opt for total relaxation, as you order a drink and watch the waves roll in. Incredible sunsets celebrate the end of each day and promise beautiful days to come. Here is a look at some of our favorite beaches— which will be your favorite?
ST. PETE BEACH Called the “Sunset Capital of Florida,” this beach brings in scores of vacationers and locals for all kinds of activities. Even though the west coast of Florida isn’t known for surfing, this is perhaps one of the only spots along the Gulf where surfers can jump on their boards to catch some waves. You can also see the historic Don CeSar, also known as the “Pink Palace,” which has welcomed visitors since 1928. A frequent guest was author F. Scott Fitzgerald. Today it continues to be a destination for visitors and a popular site for weddings or anyone looking for a lavish stay on the water.
TREASURE ISLAND Tucked between St. Petersburg and Clearwater, the aptly named Treasure Island boasts 4 miles of beach and a trove of activities, from offshore fishing and diving to an annual sand-sculpting contest to simply relaxing under an umbrella. If you have your own vessel, head over to the town’s three public marinas and make your boat your home during your vacation. Also, with so many Relax and renew at the beaches of Pinellas County, where more than 35 miles of sugar sand shore beckon you to slow down and breathe.

nature trails and parks, it’s ideal for breaking out the bicycles or hiking boots or to let your furry friend get in on some of the action.
MADEIRA BEACH This beach is home to the famous John’s Pass, where in 1848, a massive hurricane broke the land in two. The discovery of the pass by a turtle farmer is celebrated every year with much pirate- and fisherman-themed fanfare. A turn-of-the-century feel remains along the boardwalk, with its unique shops and restaurants. Fresh fish is all the rage—more grouper is brought into John’s Pass than anywhere else in Florida. For a sweet treat, stop by the original Candy Kitchen for candies that will take you back to your childhood, a scoop (or two) of homemade ice cream or a decadent caramel apple. If you see people walking the beach with their heads down and squinting at the sand, they just may be searching for fossilized sharks’ teeth. If water sports are the name of the game, John’s Pass is the place for boat rentals and parasailing. INDIAN ROCKS BEACH Legend has it the town got its name when a medicine man used water from a natural sulfur spring to treat his chief ’s ailments. It’s believed that the spring is in Kolb Park, across from city hall. The town retains an Old Florida ambience, with a relaxed, laid-back feel. Among the early landmarks were the Indian Rocks Sundry Store and the Indian Beach Hotel. The only high-rises you’ll find along this beach are the sand dunes, as well as small motels, cottages and condos. Explore the waters, or take a stroll through the Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve. For the perfect end to your day, dine in one of the restaurants that offer views of the water.
CLEARWATER BEACH Broad beaches, turquoise water and nearby hotels, shops and restaurants make Clearwater Beach one of the area’s most popular beaches. The waters are great for dolphinwatching. Perhaps the biggest draw is Pier 60, which hosts free nightly celebrations with street performers, live music, vendors and fun for the entire family. Clearwater Beach also boasts a wide selection of restaurants, many just steps from the beach. One of the world’s most renowned marine-life rescue centers, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, is host to Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (including Winter, who swims with a prosthetic tail, and Hope, both stars of the “Dolphin Tales” films), sea turtles, river otters, stingrays, sharks and more. Interact with the animals, take an eco-boat tour, and go behind the scenes to see the animal hospital in action. 42

Coming to Florida there are a few things you must try; jet skis, parasailing and now a Segway. After just a few minutes of instruction from your guide Remi you’ll be off & rolling through a guided tour of Ft. DeSoto Park – one of this areas national treasures. The Fort was built in the 1800’s for the Spanish American War and is a lot of fun to explore. There’s a good chance you’ll see some native wildlife like raccoons, turtles and even dolphins as you wind your way through this nature preserve. Remi calls it his jungle paradise!
