ROUTE 66 ROCKS! Flagstaff ’s place on the Mother Road. BY STACEY WITTIG

This retro spot along Route 66 sports a 1950s theme and offers more than 100 flavors of malts and shakes.

When you’re attending a gathering in Arizona and hear the lyrics, “Well, I’m standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona,” chances are others around you will belt out the rest of the song. “And such a fine sight to see. It’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin’ down to take a look at me.” The Eagles’ hit, “Take it Easy,” is almost an anthem for Arizona rockers, and especially those who cruise Route 66. However, the back story is that Jackson Brown, who wrote the song along with Glenn Frey, was inspired by an experience—not on a corner in Winslow, but on a corner in Flagstaff, Arizona. According to an interview with Flagstaff events producer Matthew Ziegler, singer-songwriter Brown revealed, “The image of that girl driving a truck was an image that came from east Flag(staff ). That’s what you heard. It wasn’t really a flatbed Ford. It was a Toyota truck, and it was pulling out of Wienerschnitzel.” The old Wienerschnitzel building is now the Route 66 Dog Haus, a local favorite for drive-through breakfast burritos and tasty burgers. Stand on this corner, and you might be able to write your own road trip NA 18

narrative about getting “checked out” on the legendary highway. Rock on at an authentic Route 66 roadhouse, The Museum Club, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Enter the twostory log building through the forked trunk of a native Ponderosa pine and walk into another world of strange and curious relics that were collected over the years. In cool weather, a fire crackles in the fireplace, and any season, Miss Jane greets you from behind the bar, where she’s been pouring for more than 20 years. With the celebrated road traversing through downtown, Flagstaff offers many rockin’ Route 66 sites. Indeed, the road earned the name “America’s Main Street” because it ran along the main streets of the towns it passed through on its way from Chicago to Los Angeles. Pull over at the Flagstaff Visitor Center, which is housed in the Tudor Revival train station built in 1926, the same year that Route 66 was commissioned in Arizona. There, get a free Route 66 Passport and brochures for self-guided historic Route 66 walking tours. Flagstaff ’s first Route 66 motel on the 1920s and early 1930s

alignment that went south of the railroad tracks is Motel Du Beau. Built in the Craftsman style, the motor hotel boasted a courtyard design that allowed motorists to park in front of their rooms— quite an innovation in 1929. Five years later, Route 66 was repositioned to its present alignment. Traffic during the mass migration of Dust Bowl families out of the Plains States forced construction of the railroad underpass on the west side of downtown. The motel is easy to find; just look for the 80-foot tower sign on the south side of the tracks. Don’t miss the hipster Nomads Global Lounge located at the historic motel. Nearby, Mother Road Brewing Company is also on the lost portion of Route 66. The name comes from John Steinbeck’s epic novel about the Dust Bowl migration, “The Grapes of Wrath.” The author called Route 66 “the mother road, the road of flight.” Celebrate your own journey by lifting a pint of Nitro Twin Arrows, Lost Highway, or Tower Station, each named for an iconic Mother Road stop.

Rock ‘n’ roll is here to stay at the Galaxy Diner. Request the song “Get Your Kicks on Route 66” while trying to choose from more than 100 flavors of malts and shakes. The ’50s joint’s menu offers a list of Knuckle Sandwiches or Blue Plate Specials. Your toes will be tapping as you peruse walls plastered with glamour photos of stars from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. If you love nostalgic neon, here’s a Route 66 tip: hop over to Western Hills Motel—it has the best classic neon in town. The horses’ legs seem to move as they pull the covered wagon. And, Agave Mexican Restaurant serves homemade food and has windows that overlook America’s Main Street. Still want more Route 66? Then explore the ruins of Two Guns Ghost Town. The abandoned trading post and campground has a swimming pool tagged with urban art that makes for Instagrammable photo ops. Your imagination may be snared by fake “Indian ruins” built by a past owner as part of the timeworn tourist trap. WHERE GUEST B OOK

WHERE THE RUINS ARE Here in Arizona, actual preserved archaeological sites give fascinated history buffs the opportunity to walk among prehistoric ruins and unspoiled petroglyphs.

Canyon de Chelly is one of the longest continuously-inhabited areas of North America.

BY KRISTINA JENKINS

CANYON DE CHELLY NATIONAL MONUMENT To the Navajo tribe, Canyon de Chelly is not only a place of history, but also a place of deep spirituality. The monument is unique, in that it is comprised entirely of Navajo Nation land and remains inhabited and cultivated by Navajo people, who took over the area from the Anasazi approximately 500 years ago. Canyon de Chelly features ancient geological and archaeological features including 800-foot sandstone spires known collectively as Spider Rock and an ancient cliff dwelling called the White House Ruin. Visitors to the White House Ruin need only drive in to the park and find the designated trail, but either a park ranger or authorized Navajo guide must accompany travelers who wish to see the ruins on the canyon floor. MONTEZUMA CASTLE NATIONAL MONUMENT One of the most significant and best-preserved sites is conveniently located just off a major interstate highway. An easily-accessed, third-of-a-mile paved trail leads visitors past the 20-room “high rise” dubbed Montezuma Castle, a protected site since 1906. The impressive Sinagua cliff dwellings always beg the question, “How did prehistoric people get up there?” The answer? They used ladders! Within a dozen miles of the castle is Montezuma Well, an intriguing limestone basin lined with more cliff dwellings. The well was an important water source for ancient residents, and a 1,000-year-old irrigation ditch employed by the Sinagua is still used by local residents today. Daily ranger talks at the castle offer this and other insights into the people’s way of life—but don’t expect the same talk twice. Rangers don’t have a script when it comes to discussing the monument—they just always hope to get people thinking a little deeper. And staring up at the castle’s ruddy cliffs or down into the well’s azure water, you can’t help but wonder what life was like here in the 13th century. Between Sedona and Phoenix, I-17, exit 289. www.nps.gov/moca

WUPATKI NATIONAL MONUMENT Beyond the mountain town of Flagstaff is the 35,253acre Wupatki National Monument, which includes a number of sandstone pueblos as well as other features— by one account more than 3,000—that indicate this area was home to five prehistoric cultures throughout thousands of years. One archaic spearhead discovered here dates back 11,000 years, but most B.C.-era artifacts were wiped out when a nearby volcano (now known as Sunset Crater) erupted in A.D. 1064. The on-site visitor center directs guests to the short trails that lead to five pueblo sites. Wupatki (which means “tall house” in the Hopi language) is the largest pueblo, with 100 rooms and a ball court, and is directly behind the visitor center and easily accessible from the paved, half-mile trail. The Lomaki and Box Canyon Pueblos overlook a pair of small canyons where farming took place. The “blowhole”—an orifice of an underground cavern system—is definitely a sight not to be missed; it blows icy-cold air out in the summer, and sucks in air in the winter! 14 miles east of Highway 89, Flagstaff. www.nps.gov/wupa

TUZIGOOT NATIONAL MONUMENT Atop a ridge just beyond the town of Clarkdale sits Tuzigoot, a pueblo built during the Sinagua period as early as A.D. 1000. Construction is said to have lasted approximately 300 years, with people living at the site until 1400. Two quarter-mile trails afford visitors awesome vistas and a close-up examination of the ruins, as well as an interpretation of what the former threestory structure may have looked like in its 13th-century heyday. However amazing a prehistoric three-story pueblo seems, park archaeologist Matthew Guebard says Tuzigoot was relatively typical. “To me, Tuzigoot is a normal village. And it’s a chance for folks to see just a normal village”—as opposed to a grand complex like Montezuma Castle. The visitor center and museum here deserve a look too. Built during the Great Depression-era excavation (a Works Progress Administration project), the Pueblo Revival-style building represents a 1930s impression of what Tuzigoot— which had 110 rooms—may have looked like and holds more than 25,000 artifacts recovered from the excavation.
