It is with tremendous pleasure that I welcome you, on behalf of our entire ‘ohana (family), to Royal Hawaiian Center here at Helumoa, Waikīkī. With more than 110 shops and restaurants, along with an extensive cultural and entertainment program, we offer you a most unique shopping experience. Fronting three blocks of Hawai‘i’s famed Kalākaua Avenue, Royal Hawaiian Center stands upon land that was once owned by the ali‘i (Hawaiian nobility). Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, who made Helumoa her home in the latter 1800s, composed her last will and testament bequeathing her estate for the purpose of providing for education for Native Hawaiians. In 1887, Kamehameha Schools, named for her great-grandfather who united all of

Aloha mai kakou.

the chiefdoms of the Hawaiian islands under one rule in 1810, opened its doors. Today, the land beneath Royal Hawaiian Center is still owned by the Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate. Pauahi maintains her place here at Helumoa in a statue built to her likeness that makes its home in our Royal Grove. There, Pauahi sits with a keiki (youngster) enjoying the passing day. Pauahi’s legacy and Hawaiian heritage are celebrated through our cultural-arts classes, which take place several times throughout the week. Kumu hula Puake‘ala Mann teaches both ‘ukulele and hula, and is always a joy to learn from. Wainani Yim also teaches ‘ukulele inside Helumoa Hale, our Guest Services central just off of the Royal Grove. Uncle Tom Cummings’ story-telling hours throughout the week are great fun for the whole family, too! And don’t forget, of course, our lei-making classes and our lomi (massage) demonstrations, as well. For a comprehensive schedule of all of our cultural programming, including our fantastic entertainment calendar, visit royalhawaiiancenter.com. No laila e o‘u mau hoa, nou nō kēia hale nei ‘o ka Royal Hawaiian Center. E kipa mai! And so, my dear friends, our Royal Hawaiian Center is your home. You are welcome here.

Resort wear never looked so chic. Model Rachel Cook wears a gorgeous outfit from the Royal Hawaiian Center’s swimsuit boutique, PINK SAND. Playful accessory colors turn up the volume as seen in OMEGA’s link strap and rose-colored face dials. FURLA’s subtle two-toned taupe and soft pink sandals are perfect for any day out on the beach. FENDI’s bracelet brings fun contrasts and textures to any ensemble while TORY BURCH’s abstract version of an ombre design warmly reminds us of a perfect sunrise in Hawai‘i.

Let’s start with CARTIER’s unique Amulette de Cartier earring set, which emulates a talisman that holds your wishes and dreams. FURLA’s metallic closed-toe heel is a perfect color block combo that will complement HARRY WINSTON’s limited edition Countdown to a Cure Timepiece, in honor of its partnership with amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research. Best Self Forward Get the royal treatment at Spa Royal Hawaiian By Kristen nemoto

Since the dayS of hawai‘i’S royal monarchy, luxury body treatments have been in existence and eagerly practiced. in 1803, archibald Menzies, a Scottish surgeon and botanist, wrote about his first experience with lomilomi (to rub or knead out) massage and said it was “an operation ... very luring and pleasing when gently performed.” Before the white house in washington, d.c. started racking up their electricity and water bills, King david Kalākaua, and those fortunate to be invited to ‘iolani Palace, were basking in luxurious hot temperature baths in copper-lined tubs. today, the practice of massage therapy and body treatments continues through specialized practitioners and attentive massage therapists. a particular place, one that takes you away from all the hustle and bustle of waikīkī’s lively strip, is none other than the center’s Spa Royal Hawaiian. after a long day of work or an exhausting flight, locals and visitors alike find themselves venturing over to the quiet haven for a chance to unwind, recharge and relax. Massage options include lomilomi, Swedish, shiatsu, deep tissue, sports massage, reflexology, hot stone, lomilomi combo (a combination of lomilomi and hot stone) and the Royal Mix (a combination of Swedish, lomi lomi, shiatsu, detox and lymphatic massages). facial and body treatments are also provided. History Lesson Music and Hula Through the Ages at Helumoa

Ancient mele and hula offer an artistic portal to Hawai‘i’s storied past. Helumoa, the Waikīkī land section that is home to Royal Hawaiian Center, is considered an important wahi pana—a storied place rich with history and lore. For centuries prior to King Kamehameha’s early unification of our Islands, Helumoa was home to such ancient O‘ahu rulers as Mā‘ilikūkahi and Kākuhihewa. Here in the legendary coconut grove of Helumoa, the arts thrived as an important element within royal circles. Prominent retainers in ali‘i compounds included the best poets, chanters, genealogists, dancers, artisans, and others whose high-level skills were both enjoyed and supported by nobility. The haunting pulse of pahu drums carved from coconut logs and covered with shark skin would accompany mele hula—poetic chant composed for the sacred hula. Ho‘opa‘a chanted epic stories while

Mele are songs and chants performed in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i, Native Hawaiian language. Contrary to popular belief, it’s mele that relate stories in the dance and not the common notion that the hands tell the story in hula.

drumming specific rhythms as ‘ōlapa provided physical and spiritual energy through graceful and powerful dance. Hula kahiko is a broad term we use to describe older hula that has tenaciously survived through the generations, even when faced with strictly enforced abolitions by zealous missionaries.

A renaissance in the 1970s sparked the revival of Hawaiian music and hula.

A renaissance in the early 1970s sparked the revival of Hawaiian language, music and hula that rekindled Hawaiian pride and identity. Today, Hawaiian music and hula are enjoyed by kama‘āina (locals) and malihini (visitors) alike. A phenomenon worthy of note is the remarkable interest and participation in hula among folks the world over. The older styles of hula have also made a strong comeback in Waikīkī. Royal Hawaiian Center’s Hula Kahiko at Helumoa series features teachers from top hālau hula (traditional dance schools) who come to the Royal Grove to share their talents each Saturday evening. Of the many complimentary entertainment offerings here, the hula kahiko performances are immensely enjoyed by malihini, and trigger emotions and pride among the growing number of kama‘āina who appreciate Helumoa’s local vibe and ambiance. Mele are songs and chants performed in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i, our native Hawaiian language. It is the mele that relate stories in the dance, a counterpoint to the common notion that the hands tell the story in hula. In older styles, movements were often repetitive and vague. While the eyes took in the beauty and grace of movement, the ear focused on mele hula about island legends, superhuman heroes, ancient gods, the complexities of love and virtually any subject of human experience and interest. Over time, Hawaiian culture was slowly disappearing and its language understood less and less by our people and, of course, completely foreign to the ears of malihini whose numbers steadily increased during the early 20th century. This era pinpoints the storytelling shift from a song-and-

R Culture chant focus to interpretive hand gestures, much more elaborate than the subtlety of earlier times. With the growing number of settlers and visitors, and the advent of World War II and subsequent arrival of soldiers enjoying R&R in the Islands, a new form of island music took root. Hapa-haole (halfforeign) is still a popular music genre in which Island themes and stories are sung in English. Such songs as “Little Grass Shack,” “Pearly Shells,” “The Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai” and “Yacka Hula Hicky Doola” are examples of compositions from an outside lens with lyrics that were meant to be fun and carefree but were considered by some Hawaiian kūpuna (elders) as degrading. However, there are great examples of hapa-haole tunes that succeeded in capturing emotions of love, romance and island beauty.

Andy Kealoha Cummings, a longtime Waikīkī entertainer and composer, was in Lansing, Michigan on a Hawaiian tour when he got homesick. Snowbound and missing his sweetheart, he penned this song that became an instant hit in Hawai‘i and around the world. “There’s a feeling deep in my heart, stabbing at me just like a dart. It’s a feeling heavenly. I see memories out of the past, memories that always will last, of that place beside the sea. Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling, I hear your rolling surf calling; calling and calling to me. Waikīkī, ‘tis for you that my heart is yearning, my thoughts are always returning, out there to you across the sea.” Welcome to Waikīkī. Welcome to Helumoa. And, welcome here, to Royal Hawaiian Center.

Hawaiian greetings often

include poetic cultural references. Aloha e nā hoaaloha mai ka ‘ō‘ili mua ‘ana o ka lā i Kumukahi ā ka la iho aku o ka mole ‘olu ‘o Lehua, is one such example. it means “greetings to all friends, from the rising of the sun at Kumukahi to the setting of the sun at Lehua.” Kumukahi and Lehua are often paired in Hawaiian mele (songs). Kumukahi is at the eastern tip of Hawai‘i island in the Puna district, making it the easternmost point in the pae ‘āina (Hawaiian archipelago). Kumu has many meanings: “source, beginning, origin, foundation, teacher, reason or purpose.” Kahi means “one” or “place/location.” while the multiple meanings lend to a litany of translations, the one most often used is “first beginning.” Kumukahi is the physical place where Hawaiian understanding and appreciation of the cosmos place the beginning of the sun’s path. folklore tells us that two wives of a warrior who came from Kahiki— yet another poetic cultural reference; one meaning “horizon”—possessed the power to push and pull the sun between them to cause seasonal changes. The tale continues to inform us that the warrior and his wives reached Hawai‘i and made landfall at the eastern tip of Puna. The place was then named Kumukahi, honoring this story. at the western end of the eight major islands (Hawaiian islands) just

past Ni‘ihau is a small island called Lehua. This is where the sun sets according to the Hawaiian worldview. The pair of words are used to reference the extent of the Hawaiian Islands in oli (chant) and mele. In Aia i Kumukahi, Kīhei de Silva writes: Kumukahi frequently appears in older mele as a symbol of the fresh start and proper sequence of action so necessary to the success of human endeavor. Thus, in the traditional processional chants Ho‘opuka e ka Lā ma ka Hikina and Hiki mai ka Lā ma ka Hikina, Kumukahi serves as the eastern gateway through which sun and dancer pass on a journey that “floods the earth with light and brings forth vitality to all [they touch]” (Kawena Pukui, “Hulas of Kaua‘i,” Bishop Museum Archives). In Queen Emma’s travel chant He Ui

Royal Hawaiian Center, Building B, Level 1, Waikiki

The coupling of Kumukahi and Lehua in a greeting refers to everyone. a he Nīnau kēia na Hōpoe Wahine i Hā’ena, Kūki‘i Heiau at Kumukahi serves as Emma’s figurative entrypoint on a Puna ‘homecoming’ visit that is not so much geographical as spiritual. And in high chiefess Manono’s second paukū to the mele now known as ‘O Kona Kai ‘Ōpua i ka La’i, the activity of the sun at Kumukahi (it enters Puna through the passageway marked by the stones Ha‘eha‘e and Makanoni) becomes a metaphor of Manono’s introduction to complete, fulfilling love. In general, the coupling of Kumukahi and Lehua in a greeting or speech poetically refers to everyone under the sun’s path. So when someone says, “Mai Kumukahi ā i Lehua,” they mean everyone— you, me, him and her. Everyone.

after 237 years, two treasured

artifacts have returned to their proper place: Hawai‘i. In 1779, the chief of Hawai‘i Island, Kalani‘ōpu‘u, who traced his regal line to the great chief Līloa of waipi‘o, greeted an english captain named James Cook after his ship made port in Kealakekua Bay. as a demonstration of his goodwill, Kalani‘ōpu‘u gifted the ‘ahu ‘ula (feathered cloak) and mahiole (feathered helmet) he was wearing to Cook. at a formal unveiling ceremony in March, Hawai‘i’s top chanters, orators and hula troupes performed traditional dances that date back hundreds of years. “It demonstrated that the legacy of our ancestors continues to thrive and persevere,” said office of Hawaiian affairs (oHa) Kamana‘opono Crabbe. “I’m grateful to witness the return of these cultural heirlooms. The return of the ‘ahu ‘ula and mahiole to Hawai‘i is a cause for celebration and it will be a source of inspiration, reflection and discussion among Native Hawaiians, Hawai‘i residents and visitors alike.”

In a partnership among OHA, The National Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, the ‘ahu ‘ula and mahiole of Kalani‘ōpu‘u are now part of an exhibit called “He Nae Ākea: Bound Together.” “This reflects the connection of Kalani‘ōpu‘u to his land and people, the connection between the peoples, nations, and cultures throughout the centuries who have cared for these treasures, as well as the connection between the three institutions directly involved in this loan,” said Bishop Museum president and CEO Blair D. Collis in a prepared statement. “It is only as a result of all of these ties that we have arrived where we are today.” After the ‘ahu ‘ula and mahiole left on Cook’s ship, both were taken to England and passed through the hands of various museum owners and collectors. They eventually came under the care of Lord St Oswald, who unexpectedly presented his entire collection in 1912 to the Dominion Museum in New Zealand, the predecessor of Te Papa Tongarewa. The cloak and helmet have been in the national collection ever since. “In the museum world you rarely get to have long-term loans,” Collis said, “and even rarer to contemplate the idea of having them gifted.”

shoppers’ dining options were simply limited to burgers, tacos and slices of pizzas. Once bastions for large restaurant franchises, malls today have evolved into dining destinations, much like at the Royal Hawaiian Center where patrons can have sushi at 2 p.m. or a New York steak at 3 p.m. Craving dim sum? That’s another possibility. How about a plate of pasta? No problem. And while fastfood is always an option, a better compromise is what Royal Hawaiian Center restaurants tout as their “Midday Menus.” Noi to the World Scoring major points for its culinary presentation and dining room aesthetics, Noi Thai Cuisine offers guests a taste of Thailand in a palatial-like setting. Golden leaves dangle from the ceiling in one private room and a mini “reflecting pool” sits in the main dining area. “You come here for the show and the experience,” says owner Noi Lapangkura, the restaurant’s namesake. “The food is authentic Thai but with a modern twist to the presentation.” Available all day at the bar and lanai, an abbreviated menu lists such specials as lemongrass chicken, crispy garlic chicken, glass noodle salad and Thai-style pork jerky. Prices range between $8 and $12. Offering more variety than lunch, the dinner menu includes a list of noodles, including prawn pad Thai, and such entrees as cashew nut chicken, the housespecial crispy garlic chicken and the “Royal Hawaiian Dream,” a thick cut of mahimahi that’s seasoned with a blend of Thai spices and placed atop a bed of spinach. “Thai cuisine doesn’t have to be all spicy,”

Lapangkura notes. “Our chef and the rest of the kitchen have been trained in Thailand,” Lapangkura says. “So what guests experience is a taste of Thailand without having to fly there.” Building C, Level 3, 808.664.4039 Hungry Like a Wolf Translated to “Little Wolf,” Il Lupino offers a “stuzzichini” (small plates) menu between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. Start with bruschetta Siciliana, topped with grilled eggplant and Big Island heirloom tomatoes then move on with a veal-pork-and-beef meatball finished with a Pomodoro sauce. Heartier options include the panseared striploin served with sautéed mushrooms and caramelized onions; grilled Colorado lamb chop; a selection of artisanal salami; and personal pizza garnished with mozzarella and arugula and prosciutto. Building B, Level 1, 808.922.3400 On a Roll The road to happiness starts and ends at Doraku Sushi. And somewhere in between, guests can sample the assorted rolls. Ample selections can be found under the “Sushi + Sashimi” heading. Guests can play it safe and order the ubiquitous summer, dragon or caterpillar roll. But they can opt instead to take their taste buds on an adventure and try the kagu-tsuchi “God of Fire,” a spicy tuna roll folded with cucumbers and jalapeno, and topped with habanero masago and spicy garlic aioli; or the white dragon roll, prepared with shrimp tempura and avocado then garnished with hamachi, unagi sauce, ao nori, garlic aioli and garlic chips. hawai‘i’s iconic snacks are one-of-akind. Like the waves of people who introduced, adapted and embraced them, they’re unique to the islands, a happy blend of sweet, savory, puckery and hot. here’s a quick intro to hawai‘i’s favorite snacks. it’s shave ice ... without the ‘d.’ introduced into hawai‘i by Japanese immigrant workers in the 1920s, shave ice was a refreshing treat for plantation workers who would break from the cane fields and use their knives to shave ice from ice blocks. sweet sugar cane juice would drip onto each fragment of ice and a tradition was born. soon, knives were replaced by hand-cranked machines, which have since given way to motorized machines. named after its literal term of “shaved” pieces of ice packed firmly into a paper cup, shave ice’s delectable reputation has steadily kept pace as one of hawai‘i’s favorite desserts or snacks. The colors are vibrant and the flavors seem endless. cotton candy, lychee, coffee, root beer, bubble gum, guava. classic flavors and tropical flavors and wacky flavors are all available. Then there are flavor combinations, such as pineapple/ coconut/Lime or Lychee/ Lilikoi/ mango. The garnishes range from mochi balls and azuki beans to custard and ice cream to varying syrups and condensed milk. Continued on page 66

It’s not pronounced poke, like a jab, but PO-kay, as in the Hawaiian staple that has been around for centuries. In its simplest form, poke is composed of raw, bite-sized cubes of fish that are traditionally seasoned with Hawaiian sea salt, limu and ‘inamona (ground kukui or candlenut). However, chefs nowadays have elevated the flavors to include such ingredients as sea asparagus, pineapple poi, soy-opihi foam and even peanut butter. Popular in the Islands, iterations of the grab-and-go snack can be found at fine-dining restaurants and at just about any store that sells food. The ubiquitous musubi has even gotten the nod from President Obama, who has been spotted eating the local staple while playing golf here on vacation. These snacks can be found at Island Vintage Coffee (Bldg. C211), Island Vintage Shave Ice (B1 Kiosk) and ABC Store (Bldg. B107).
