Ke aloha iā ‘oukou pākahi āpau. Mahalo no ke kipa ‘ana mai i ke kikowaena ‘o Royal Hawaiian Center ma luna o ka ‘āina pūlama ‘ia nō ‘o Helumoa. I cordially welcome you to Royal Hawaiian Center on the historic grounds of Helumoa. On every level of all three buildings of the Center, there’s much to do, see and enjoy. Allow yourself the time to peruse the exquisite effects of our flagships along famed Kalākaua Avenue, and then step into the interior and be charmed by the variety of fantastic finds at our island boutiques. A visit to Loro Piana would ensure you’re a step ahead of the trend … if you’re the fashion-forward type. There, you’re sure to find a head-turning ensemble, complete from head to painted toe. Perhaps a day dress of silk-and-cotton paired with a rather smart-looking purse fabricated from the highest quality calfskin leather. If you’re anticipating an early summer, a sandal of crafted suede would put you right in step. Fighting Eel is a must 6 I ROYAL

if you’re more on the go and wanting your wardrobe to be versatile. A colorful wrap dress will give you that hourglass waistline and seamlessly ease your transition from office to cocktails with friends in a moment’s notice. But of course there’s more: Our 110 plus stores will fit every need from A to Z. Just give yourself enough time to browse. When you require nourishment, head over to Island Vintage Coffee for a light, epicurean treat. I recommend one of the eatery’s scrumptious poke bowls and a refreshing iced tea. You’ll find quick eats in the Pā‘ina Lānai Food Court. Or, indulge your palate on the third-level restaurant promenade. A succulent, dry-aged rib eye from award-winning Wolfgang’s Steakhouse never disappoints. Never. The Cheesecake Factory’s 19-page menu will either confuse you or ensure everyone in your party satisfies his or her varied cravings. At the very least, your sweet tooth will thank you. Attend one of our complimentary cultural lessons and let our kumu (teachers) share our culture with you and yours. First-timers will quickly realize that others in the lesson are frequent companions. It’s quite common for guests to forge lasting bonds with our kumu and to return year after year to renew their friendships. It’s simply who we are. Evenings at The Royal Grove are picturesque, illuminated by torchlight, and filled with the sounds of Hawaiian instruments and lilting melodies. Couples, whether newlyweds or anniversary celebrants, simply allow the world to slip away as they steal kisses from one another while a hula maiden playfully gestures a Hawaiian love song. That’s how we do romance. I invite you to escape the ordinary and find the center of paradise. Step into The Royal Grove and discover the rich legacy of Helumoa, Waikīkī’s historic coconut grove. And please don’t forget, e kipa hou mai, please come back.

Timeless Elegance Fendi embraces its European history with its summer 2017 collection

Fendi has opened a new bi-level boutique that carries— for the first time—both men’s and women’s ready-to-wear collections, and will feature such items as these leather goods.

42

I ROY A L H AWA I I A N C E N T E R

IF MARIE ANTOINETTE had been born and raised in the modern days of the ’90s, her closet would be filled with Fendi’s 2017 Spring and Summer prêt-à-porter collection.Throw in some funky pieces borrowed from her Harajuku and tech-and-punk-rock girlfriends from Seattle circa 1993 and she’s ready to attend any party she would like to attend—no invitation required nor needed. Fendi’s creative directors Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi are no strangers to turning dreamlike concepts into runway-ready realities. Just last July, Fendi made fashion history with a magical runway show at Rome’s Trevi Fountain. As 2017 marks 91 years since its birth in Rome, Fendi continues to evolve and dance with tradition and artistic modernity. Its craftsmanship and

razor-sharp attention to detail keeps the Italian brand prestige strong and undoubtedly the most recognized fashion label in the world. The tug-and-pull theme of Marie Antoinette as the inspirational muse can be seen on Fendi’s online runway show, along with the products of leather goods and accessories this season. There’s a sense of rebellion and yet naïveté as whisps of painted flowers and roses for buttons meet linear shapes, chain-link straps and colors of black and brown. It’s an evolution of maturity that pays homage to Fendi’s dedication in creating pieces that speak to its audience, who are forever loyal to the iconic label. Fendi is located in Building C, Levels 1 and 2. For more information, call 808.923.7329.

Forever Strong How Anteprima Wirebag got its shape

Clockwise from top: Anteprima Wirebag's 2017 Spring and Summer collection features prints of polka dots and jasmine flowers; portrait of Izumi Ogino.

44

I ROY A L H AWA I I A N C E N T E R

WITH THE THEME, “Against Fragility” for the 2017 Spring and Summer collection, Anteprima Wirebag’s creative director Izumi Ogino was strongly inspired by the 1950s “dandyism fashion from the (United Kingdom’s) royal family.” Young women of today, Ogino said—in a recent press release—reminded her of those who “don’t compete with others, but follow (their) hearts’ desires...” and those who “cherish (their) inner strength and beauty.” Ogino’s own inner strength and beauty came to life when she was given the opportunity to start her own brand when she was in her “older” years of mid-30s. During that time, she was working for an Italian brand and managing the Far East region. When given the chance to launch a store in Hong Kong, she decided

to take on the job and became “fearless,” accepting the daunting challenge without experience in studying design or managing a business. Her goal was to develop the brand globally and, with help from those around her, she was able to do so, calling it “Anteprima,” which translates as “before debut” in Italian. With support from those around her, Izumi wanted Anteprima to pay tribute to those who helped the brand’s mission of encouraging women of all ages to be original and to not be afraid of new challenges; to celebrate and know that they can take on the world—no matter who they are or where they come from. Anteprima is located in Building B, Level 1. For more information, call 808.924.0808.

The Spaceship of Our Ancestors

Herb Kāne, along with friends Ben Finney and Tommy Holmes, helped charter a new voyaging society BY MONTE MCCOMBER PAINTING BY HERB KÄNE

Edgar Degas, a Parisian painter who preferred to be called a realist as opposed to an impressionist, once said: “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” In considering the paintings of Herbert Kawainui Kāne, truer words could not be spoken. 46 I ROYA L

I 47

Kāne’s visionary creations depicted early Hawaiian life and propelled the ground-breaking experiment to revive Hawai‘i’s lost sea-faring traditions. Today, he is lovingly remembered as the father of Hōkūle‘a, Hawai‘i’s world-renowned wa‘a kaulua (double-hulled canoe)—now on the final leg of its Mālama Honua (Care for the Earth) worldwide voyage and soon to return to Hawai‘i via Tahiti—and of the Hawaiian Renaissance that took place in the 1970s. Kāne was born in 1928 and his formative years were shared between Wisconsin and deep within the pristine waterfalls-fed valley of Waipi‘o on the Island of Hawai‘i (Big Island as it’s more commonly known). Much of his boyhood, barefoot days was spent listening to tales of the kiniakua (pantheon of Hawaiian gods), kupua (lesser gods) and ‘aumākua (family gods). The powerful imagery and wonder of 48 I ROYAL

these regaling stories resonated with him. As a result, he developed an affinity for Hawaiian lore and art. As a young man, he served in the US Navy. After being discharged from military service, he rekindled his childhood interest and committed to it with the maturity of a man; honing his knack for pencil and brush at the Art Institute of Chicago. His passion and talent found their way to the canvas at a time when a reawakened Hawai‘i was coming of age. To see an Herb Kāne painting was to glimpse back in time at a moment in Hawaiian history from the creation of the cosmos to the 1800s. Kāne befriended anthropologist Ben Finney and sailor Tommy Holmes, author of “The Hawaiian Canoe.” The trio were deeply fascinated by traditional wayfinding methods. Together they devised an experiment to prove that early Polynesians purposely sailed the Pacific Ocean without the use of nautical instrumentation, and born was the Polynesian Voyaging Society, known more commonly by the acronym, PVS. Kāne designed his wa‘a kaulua based on historical data. Unfortunately, at the time, traditional materials were not available. Large acacia koa trees with trunks possessing a suitable diameter were, sadly, no longer a part of the Hawaiian After four years circumnavigating the globe, Hōkūle‘a and sister ship Hikianalia will return to Hawaiian waters in June. To mark the occasion, a plaque that was dedicated to the crew of the 19851987 “Voyage of Rediscovery” will be re-installed.

forest ecosystem. Instead, plywood, fiberglass and resin were used in constructing the double-hulled canoe. Once built, Kāne christened the wa‘a, Hōkūle‘a, meaning “Star of Gladness.” On March 8, 1975, the waters of the Pacific once again cradled the keel of a Hawaiian voyaging canoe. On May 1, 1976, Hōkūle‘a embarked on her maiden voyage bound for Tahiti, retracing an ancient sailing route. Master Navigator Mau Piailug, from Satawal, Micronesia, successfully guided Hōkūle‘a to the waters of Tahiti, making landfall on June 3, 1976. Following in his teacher’s footsteps, Nāinoa Thompson successfully navigated Hōkūle‘a to Tahiti in 1980, becoming the first kānaka (Hawaiian) in contemporary times to do so using only the movement of celestial orbs and ocean tides. Kāne’s dream and the grand experiment of the founders of PVS catapulted native knowledge to Western academia’s front door. The malo (loincloth), worn by sailors, was now as much a symbol of academic commencement as the cap and gown. “We didn’t know the spaceship of our ancestors, but Herb did,” remarked Thompson, Hōkūle‘a master navigator and PVS president, in tribute to Kāne upon his recognition as the Kama‘āina of the Year by Historic Hawai‘i Foundation in 2011. Royal Hawaiian Center is proud to have been an advocate for PVS during its fledgling years. As Bishop Estate’s (now Kamehameha Schools) Waikīkī crown property and the ancestral lands of the Kamehameha dynasty, known as Helumoa, the Center was chosen as the site to commemorate the Voyage of Rediscovery, a two-year voyage from 1985 to 1987 to further reclaim forgotten ancestral knowledge and to bring it to light in the age of science. R Culture was an incredible exploit considering that just five years prior, kānaka had only skimmed the surface of what their kūpuna (ancestors) knew. Their journey would take them past Tahiti to Rarotonga (Cook Islands), Aotearoa (New Zealand) in the far southwest, Tonga and Samoa in the north, and then back again. In July of their return, a plaque naming all 69 crew members was installed and a kukui tree (candlenut)—symbolizing knowledge and enlightenment—was planted on the grounds of Helumoa. Time and change necessitated renovations and improvements to the nearly 37-year-old structures and the removal of the plaque.

Royal Hawaiian Center is proud to have been a part of PVS during its fledgling years.

With Hōkūle‘a soon to return from the grandest voyage of its 42-year existence, and upon the 30th year anniversary of the Voyage of Rediscovery, it’s time to re-install the 1987 plaque; re-affirming the long-standing pilina (relationship) between PVS and Royal Hawaiian Center. The Cultural Affairs Team of the Center and PVS are currently in the planning stages to return the plaque to an open area. Moreover, to commemorate Hōkūle‘a’s Mālama Honua worldwide journey, the Center hopes to install a sister plaque and to plant another tree. All are invited to attend what will be, without a doubt, a momentous occasion. For updates, visit RoyalHawaiianCenter.com. More of Kāne’s artwork can be seen at herbkanehawaii.com. Shopping centers have always been hubs for socializing. And this is certainly the case at the Royal Hawaiian Center, where visitors from around the world gather to shop, dine and learn about Hawaiian culture. As the Center offers more experiences, consumers use the environment to bond with their children, family members and friends. They take ‘ukulele and hula lessons; they learn to strand a lei; they lounge on chairs sipping coffee during a shopping break; and they laugh and talk story while walking throughout this 310,000-squarefoot, four-tiered building. Here are some of our favorite fun experiences right here at the Center. People Watching. With so many international travelers visiting the Center, it’s fun trying to guess where they actually come from—Asia, Europe, Canada, Australia, Africa and maybe even South America? Seeing other people amused, casually dressed, going about daily activities is enjoyable and even soothing as you sit in one of the

oversized chairs located throughout the Center. You can feel their energy by just reading their body language. Get creative and use the moments of watching in trying to guess at another person’s story just from mere observation and embracing the pleasure of what is, in effect, an amateur social science.

Learn the Hula. Hula is the art of Hawaiian dance. It expresses all that we hear, see, smell, taste, touch and feel. Hula is life. The late kumu hula (dance master) Maiki Aiu Lake’s philosophy expresses the depths of this Hawaiian art form. Puake‘ala Mann, a kumu hula graduate of Hālau Hula ‘O Maiki, shares basic hand gestures, footwork and body movements that accentuate meaningful mele (chant or song) lyrics.

Lunch Crowd

Specials feature set menus, donburi, braised pork belly and barbecue duck BY SIMPLICIO PARAGAS | PHOTOS BY STEVE CZERNIAK TEN MINUTES PRIOR to opening its doors, patrons were already lining up to get into Restaurant Suntory. Across the way, people paused to inspect Doraku’s menu. Meanwhile, in Building C, Noi Thai Cuisine and Beijing Chinese Seafood Restaurant held their own appeal—namely lunch specials that are both satisfying and easy on the budget. From teishoku and donburi to noodles and barbecue duck, options abound for guests who are looking for more than just your typical midday meal.

Set Menu Having worked under the first Japanese “Iron Chef,” Rokusaburo Michiba, Restaurant Suntory’s executive chef Go Kamikubo is meticulous in his presentation of his “Shunsaizen,” a lunch special that offers great value for $28. The first course offers a combination of sushi, sashimi and a chicken salad garnished with strips of heart of palm. The second course is equally impressive: a piece of black cod glistens with a Saikyo-based (white miso) marinade; crispy ahi tempura is seasoned with Hawaiian salt; and a velvety chawanmushi is flavored with a nori-ankake sauce that alters the usual color of this steamed dish from cream to black. “It’s a popular special and it changes the first day of each month,” says Restaurant Suntory general manager Nobuyuki Aoyama of the

R Dining replace the common deep, blackand-red-lacquered basins. Fresh slices of sashimi, from king salmon and hamachi to tako and ebi, substitute for stewed meats. For $19.95, the chirashi don offers an array of thinly sliced raw fish served over sushi rice. A combination of uni and ikura costs $20.95. Each comes with a house salad and miso soup. “The price point is there,” says Doraku general manager Todd Sutton. “But we also offer a bento box, which is also well priced.” For $17.50, the bento box comes with a choice of veggie or spicy salmon roll, an option of teriyaki chicken, “Dynamite” donburi or vegetable tempura, and dessert. Building B, Level 3, 808.922.3323 To Thai For For Jongkol Sucodt, preparing dinner for a one-time commander in chief has certainly been one of the highlights of her young career as an executive chef. “Chef Jum,” as she is known, had the privilege of displaying her culinary skills for President Barack Obama when he dined at Noi Thai Cuisine in March. And as

Shunsaizen. “It will always come with an appetizer, the day’s sashimi, and a grilled, deep-fried and simmered dish, and dessert.” Building B, Level 3, 808.922.5511 Bowled Over At its most basic form, the traditional donburi is a Japanese “rice bowl dish,” consisting of fish, meat, vegetables or other ingredients that are simmered together and served over rice in an oversized don—bowl. Not at Doraku Sushi. Here, the iterations take on an art form, starting with presentation. Shallow ceramic bowls, which lend more style to this otherwise rustic meal-in-one entrée,

thrilling an experience as that may have been, the next day was business as usual. For Sucodt, that meant being tasked to develop three new lunch specials. The aroma of lemongrass is prominent in the bowl of tom yum noodle soup ($14), which is garnished with bean sprouts, bits of pork and half a hard-boiled egg. Her second special offers slowly braised, fork-tender pork belly ($15). The third option presents slices of steamed chicken served with a fiery sauce that can be tamed with a gulp of water or a bite of one of the intricately carved vegetables. Each comes with tofu soup and salad. “You can find these dishes everywhere in Bangkok,” smiles Sucodt, whose first name, Jongkol, translates to lotus flower. “It’s the Thai version of a Hawaiian plate lunch.” Building C, Level 3, 808.664.4039. Ancient Chinese Secret How spicy is the tan tan soup noodles? On a scale of 1-10, Beijing Chinese Seafood Restaurant manager Raymond Quan rates it a five. “But we can make it as spicy as the guest wants,” Quan says, “even fiery hot, if they want.” A popular Sichuan entree, the tan tan is a noodle dish prepared with spicy red chili oil, ground pork, preserved vegetables and green onions. Those looking for a tamer-flavored dish will want to opt for the stir-fried rice noodles with prawns and a visible good dose of flecks of garlic. Other lunch specials include the barbecue duck ($12.50); sautéed prawns in a tomato-chili-and-garlic sauce ($14.25); shredded beef with bell peppers ($12); sweet-and-sour pork ($11.50); and chicken with an XO chili sauce ($12.75), composed of chili, dried shrimp, scallop, garlic and ginger, all roasted, grounded and formed into a savory paste. WHILE FAMOUS for its Mongolian beef and lettuce wraps, P.F. Chang’s has crossed the border with its latest menu items—specialty sushi. The new sushi menu is Asian-inspired and Hawai‘iinfused, according to chef Grant Kawasaki, who helped develop the menu for P.F. Chang’s. “I chose many local ingredients including fresh fish, local produce, spices and sauces to create one-ofa-kind sushi rolls that blend Hawaiian and Asian culinary experiences to create sushi masterpieces,” says Kawasaki. New sushi rolls include the Waikīkī, a play on the rainbow roll, which is enveloped with spicy ahi, cucumber, kaiware sprouts and enoki mushrooms; the Aloha, a lobster-salad-and-asparagus roll; the Mahalo, a deluxe version of the California roll; and the Shaka, made with ahi poke and lomi salmon. Now in its sixth year in Waikīkī, Rock-A-Hula combines toe-tapping songs complemented by a live band and exhilarating choreography. Presented in a state-of-the-art, 750-seat theater, the fast-paced, 75-minute musical production has consistently ranked as one of O‘ahu’s top attractions. “It’s a big production and it definitely has that wow factor,” Brigner says. “We knew when we decided to enter the Hawai‘i market,

Accompanying these performances will be multiple dazzling special effects, jaw-dropping fire knife dancing and a captivating live musical concert. The show incorporates a variety of Hawaiian elements, including hula and mele (song), as well as new choreography featuring traditional Tahitian dance. Tickets start at $69 for the “Rockin’ Show,” with general seating in the mezzanine. For an additional $20, the “Cocktail” option includes premier seating in the mezzanine and super premium beverage. “Lū‘au” dinner-and-show tickets cost $109.
