For the past 38 years, Royal Hawaiian Center has welcomed malihini (guests) from all over the world. Since we opened, we’ve been offering kama‘āina (locals) and malihini alike the best in shopping, dining and Hawaiian culture. Our complimentary hula lesson is the longest running of its kind. Our current hula instructor, Puake‘ala Mann, has taught here since 1984, following in the footsteps of her kumu hula (hula master), Maiki Aiu Lake, one of the matriarchs of hula in contemporary Hawai‘i, who taught hula from 1980 to 1984 at Helumoa (the historic, royal grounds upon which Royal Hawaiian Center stands). There are new things afoot at the Center. Allow me to give you a quick update. Take the beach access pathway near Cheesecake Factory and you’ll find Banán, one of the new kids on the block, where you can enjoy a cool, sweet banana soft serve. Make the magic of Disney an annual adventure by visiting the new Disney Vacation Club Showroom on the third level of Building C, nearby Wolfgang’s Steakhouse. Hawaiian Island Arts, which has a complete collection of island and quilted wares, is now conveniently located on the ground level of Building C right next to Malie Kai Chocolates. While Hermès renovates its Building A Kalākaua Avenue flagship to add a third level of shopping, you can find them in the interim in Building C, between Valentino and Fendi. Our Guest Services Team is always ready to share the latest news with you and assist you in any way. Visit them at Helumoa Hale Guest Services on the ground floor of Building B next to Il Lupino or call them at 808.922.2299. From cover to cover, the R Magazine is chockful of information to help you enjoy the very best of what Royal Hawaiian Center has to offer. I invite you to browse through it and let serendipity do the rest. We’re so very happy that you’re here with us. Now, please, be our guest!

In the mid to late 1800s when Hawai‘i’s relationship with England was especially friendly, Queen Lili‘uokalani was reportedly fond of heirloom jewelry and can be seen wearing bracelets in several photographs. During the same epoch, enameled jewelry became popular and was worn primarily by English royalty, a rule that was instated by Queen Victoria. It would eventually be called “mourning jewelry.” Gold bracelets and rings were engraved with black enamel as a way to mourn the sudden death of Queen Victoria’s beloved husband, Prince Albert. The fashionable trend soon made its way to Hawai‘i as local merchants sought to sell pieces to members of England’s upper class, who were vacationing or living in the Hawaiian Islands. After Lili‘uokalani attended Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee celebration in June 1887, she had bracelets made to bring back as gifts to family members in Hawai‘i. The popularity of the jewelry soon began to grow and the “trend” quickly evolved into a valuable heirloom, treasured for generations to come. The tradition became especially prominent as Hawai‘i had its own unique design that made heirloom jewelry one of a kind. A maile lei scroll around the band of one’s bracelet is common, along with plumeria flowers or honu (turtles), which are meticulously carved along the sides of an enameled name.
Today, Hawaiian heirloom jewelry is given and received as a way to honor Hawai‘i’s deep connection to its ancestral past. For birthdays and graduations, it’s common for immediate and extended family members to combine resources in order to purchase a Hawaiian heirloom piece—mostly engraved gold bracelets for high school female graduates—to commemorate the special occasion. Wedding engagement rings and bands have grown in popularity among locals and visitors alike, a perfect memorabilia item that signifies the momentous event in the islands. Whether you’re traditional or eclectic, the styles of Hawaiian heirloom jewelry has evolved with its owners. Sterling silver and rose gold are now used in designs, and black enamel has expanded to include options such as colored or raised lettering. Whatever a person’s preference, the heirloom piece will continue on to the next generation. Hawaiian heirloom jewelry can be found at Island Fine Jewelry, 808.926.8881, Building A, Level 1; Koa Nani, 808.923.8889, Building C, Level 1; Kobe Jewelry, 808.923.2282, Building B, Level 1; Olivia Hawaiian Jewelry, 808.923.6633, Building B, Level 3.

Ua Pae Ka Wa‘a
Crewmember Jason Patterson shares his experience during Höküle‘a’s historic circumnavigational journey BY MONTE MCCOMBER
Ua Pae Ka Wa‘a! The canoe has made landfall! An amazing journey, the very first of its kind, has just come to a glorious end. Hōkūle‘a, Hawai‘i’s flagship, double-hulled canoe, successfully made landfall on its home shore on June 17, 2017, after completing its inaugural, three-year, worldwide voyage. Christened Mālama Honua (meaning “Care for the Land”), the arduous trip required navigators to rely only on traditional wayfinding methods: setting course by the movements of the sun, moon and stars; observing the directional passage of swells migrating under hull; and other signs of nature.

This epic voyage has taken Hōkūle‘a navigators around the familiar waters of the Polynesian Triangle in the Pacific Ocean through the Indian Ocean, rounding the African continent at the Cape of Good Hope, then northward through the Caribbean Sea and along the eastern seaboard of the United States via the North Atlantic. On its way home, their route took them through the six locks of the Panama Canal, a 1.9mile journey through the Isthmus
of Darien to Darwin’s Galápagos Islands, then to the easternmost island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and finally homebound to Hawai‘i from Tahiti using an ancient, northward route traversed by Chief Mō‘ikeha in the 12th century. The scene of an arrival of a wa‘a (canoe) in the Pacific is one of great celebration and filled with the fanfare of chanting, songs, dances, leigiving (flower garlands), expressions of pride and the abundant outpour-
ing of aloha. The scene of Hōkūle‘a’s triumphant return from circumnavigating our planet, guided home by ancestral knowledge, was a truly momentous occasion for kānaka (Hawaiians) and for the seafaring peoples of the Pacific Ocean. For the Polynesian Voyaging Society (known more commonly as PVS), Hawai‘i’s traditional seafaring guild, Mālama Honua was the next stage in its 44-year existence. For its maiden crew, it was the pinnacle

R Culture of a dream born in 1973 and the greatest maritime undertaking for kānaka since settling the Pacific. For its junior and apprentice crews, the journey was a crucible and a rite of passage by which to pass the proverbial torch. Apprentice navigator, Jason Patterson, shares a little of crew life on the open ocean. Can you share some of the fun things that happened on the voyage?
With any leg of a voyage there is a lot of joking around and giving each other a hard time. That’s our form of camaraderie. Leg 28 was the most laugh-filled. One night we stayed up until 2 a.m. I’m surprised those who were off watch and sleeping didn’t get up to tell us to pipe down. Some of the jokes we tell are, um, well best to say that they are colorful, and that’s putting it nicely. These colorful jokes play an important part in the journey. For us, the unofficial beginning of any voyage begins when the first colorful joke is made. It’s always followed by uncontrollable laughter to the point of tears and running out of breath. Uncle Billy Richard’s colorful joke on the Galapagos leg has to be one of the very best!
E hui kala mai, I’m afraid not. It’s one of those you-have-to-be-there kind of rules. If people really want to know, they are welcome to join the Polynesian Voyaging Society and hear them firsthand ... just saying. What’s your favorite time of day while aboard the wa'a?
Since I’m one of the communications specialists for ‘Ōiwi TV, I get assigned to the 2-6 a.m. or 2-6 p.m. watch. Both are great! I get to see 52 I ROYAL

the day begin or end. Because these watches are defined by the sun’s movement, they have a definite end to them. I’m off watch once the sun rises above the eastern crest, or dips below the western horizon. The sunrise watch is peaceful. Everyone else is asleep; there are no distractions and everything, everything is serene.
Every Island Soap & Candleworks product is handmade in Hawaii, using the finest all-natural tropical ingredients.
What’s something unexpected that you discovered?
One thing I never thought about was what happens when we get to our destination. You’re so focused on getting there. What you need to get there and how you’re going to get there. It wasn’t until the Rapa Nui leg that I realized how important the next step is—what to do when you get there. The logistics of getting the crew situated once we arrive are huge. You need transportation to take us around, a place where we can launder our clothes and gear, and, most importantly, get some cold ones. There’s more, of course, like prepping for the next leg, restocking the stores, repairs, ceremonies, outreach and education, and reconnecting with family and friends you may not have seen for years.

Where do you see yourself and PVS in 10 years?
Wherever I’m needed. I’ll be happy just to be on the wa‘a. I also see myself progressing, learning to navigate, continuing to document, everything. I, like the rest of the PVS ‘ohana, see all of Hawai‘i’s ‘ohana wa‘a traveling throughout the Pacific. We all see all of the various ‘ohana wa‘a from each of the island nations sharing ‘ike (knowledge) and building a nation of wa‘a.” Jason has been a crewmember since 2006 and has crewed 11 legs of the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage as a rescue swimmer, a communications specialist and watch captain.

As the Center offers more experiences, consumers use the environment to bond with their children, family members and friends. They take ‘ukulele and hula lessons; they learn to strand a lei; they lounge on chairs sipping coffee during a shopping break; and they laugh and talk story while walking throughout this 310,000-squarefoot, four-tiered building. Here are some of our favorite fun experiences right here at the Center.

EVERY RESTAURANT has its core menu, featuring a host of dishes that have stood the test of time. While some establishments thrive on constantly changing their offerings— from seasonal to ethnicity—others are content to stay the course, relying more on consistency and responding only to their clients’ demands as opposed to caving to current trends.
Double Your Pleasure If he ever removed the “Double Happiness” roll from Doraku Sushi’s menu, Todd Sutton quips that there would be a “regime overthrow.” “It is the most popular dish with our Japanese clientele,” says Sutton, the Waikīkī restaurant’s general manager. “The response would be a negative one.” Wrapped in nori and paper-thin slices of cucumber, the house-special Double Happiness roll is filled with bits of tuna, salmon, scallop, squid, shrimp, crabmeat, shiso leaf and kaiware sprouts then topped with garlic aioli, tobiko and ponzu sauce. Building B, Level 3, 808.922.3323 Oodles of Noodles While other similar restaurants offer a laundry list of items, Beijing Chinese Seafood Restaurant president Jimmy Wong says they prefer to offer “the best of the best.” “Everything we do here is prepared from scratch,” he asserts. “This is not a chop suey type restaurant.” Indeed it is not. An iconic Sichuan entree and popular among regular guests, the tan tan is a noodle dish prepared with spicy, red chili oil, ground pork, preserved vegetables and green onions. Depending on the guest’s preference, the soup can range from mildly spicy to fiery hot. Building C, Level 3, 808.971.8833
Yaki Ono The “Shunsaizen,” a lunch special that changes the first of each month, has been a mainstay at Restaurant Suntory since it opened in 1980. “It’s a popular special,” says general manager Nobuyuki Aoyama. “We can’t take it off the menu.” For $28, the set menu comes with an appetizer, the day’s sashimi, and a grilled, deep-fried and simmered dish, and dessert. Building B, Level 3, 808.922.5511 New York Steak of Mind A place like this is “something you don’t see here,” says Wolfgang’s Steakhouse by Wolfgang Zwiener general manager Bill Nickerson. “It’s a traditional New York City Steakhouse,” right in Waikīkī.” The Porterhouse for two is recommended, along with a big, bold red from the steakhouse’s extensive wine list, one of the best in town. While acknowledging the other popular steakhouses around the island, Nickerson asserts that only Wolfgang’s can be called a true “Prime” steakhouse. “I don’t think any of the other restaurants can say that,” he says. “And there’s only one other steakhouse that dry ages their beef on premise like we do.” Building C, Level 3. 808.922.3600 P.F. Chang's The initials P.F. stand for Paul Fleming. The Chang is actually Philip Chiang … with an “i.” And when the two friends opened the first P.F. Chang’s in July 1993 in Scottsdale, Ariz., little did they know that the concept would explode with now more than 200 locations worldwide. The idea was simple: Introduce Beijing Chinese Chinese with an AmericanSeafoodcuisine Restaurant style sensibility.

Royal Hawaiian Center restaurants present an array of classic dishes, which have become iconic menu items.
“Everything we do is typically Chinese; we cook with woks, we use Chinese ingredients and you’ll only find cleavers in our kitchens,” Chang says. “Everything is absolutely Chinese … except for the peoples’ mouths eating our food.” And those mouths can’t get enough of the vegetarian lettuce wraps, which offer a little Northern and Southern flair. Chunks of wokseared tofu (which can be substituted with chicken) are melded with red onions, water chestnuts, mint and lime then folded into a crisp, cool leaf of lettuce. They’re accompanied by a dipping station, comprised of bottles of shoyu, vinegar and chili oil, as well as little ramekins of chili sauce and, of course, the ubiquitous hot mustard. Building A, Levels 1 & 2, 808.628.6760
To Thai For A staple in Thai cuisine, curry is an aromatic sauce infused with herbs and spices. At Noi Thai, this simple dish becomes sublime. Presented tableside, each type of curry is prepared with a protein that the chef has carefully chosen to best suit the flavor profile of that specific curry. The green curry, for example, is served with premium Wagyu beef. Chunks of Alaskan crab meat are steeped in an aromatic yellow curry. The red curry roast duck arrives in a cylindrical glass then transferred to an awaiting pool of curry. “Not too many restaurants in the U.S. use crab in their curry,” explains general manager Ying Rosawan. “However, we have perfected ours by adding betel leaves to enhance the curry’s flavor.” Building C, Level 3, 808.664.4039

A NUMBER of boutique distilleries have launched throughout the Islands as of late, with each creating signature craft spirits boasting remarkable flavor, unique-to-theregion character and terroir-driven appeal. This includes artisanal rums produced using locally sourced ingredients, such as heritage sugarcane varietals. Located in Kunia, where they also offer farm tours and tastings, Manulele Distillers is home to superb Kō Hana Agricole* Rum. Hand-harvested Hawaiian-grown sugarcane is pressed and distilled to create small-batch, pure cane rums, including White, Barrel-Aged and Cask Strength. raw honey and pure cacao blended with premium cane spirit. From Kauai, award-winning Kōloa Rum Company is an artisanal distillery producing premium, single-batch rums since 2009. Their selection includes White, Gold, Dark, Spice and Coconut—all are made with island-grown raw cane sugar and are distilled in a vintage copper-pot still using filtered water from Mount Wai‘ale‘ale. For added convenience, they also blend and bottle a ready-to-drink Hawaiian Mai Tai Cocktail. Speaking of the mai tai, a snippet on its origins and back history: Two men lay claim to having created this iconic rum-based tiki cocktail.
“We better start making something for the tourists— something catchy, not too strong and nice to sip.” —LEGENDARY BARTENDER HARRY YEE
Donn “Don the Beachcomber” Beach, considered the founding father of tiki culture, concocted his version in 1933 (called the Q.B. Cooler), while the Mai Tai by Victor J. Bergeron, aka “Trader Vic” of the Polynesian-style eponymous chain of restaurants, made its debut in 1944. The mai tai name itself comes from the Tahitian phrase, “Maita’i roa ae!”—meaning, “Out of this world!” —which was reportedly declared by Bergeron’s friend upon tasting the drink for the first time. While similarities are apparent, Don the Beachcomber’s cocktail has additional ingredients, including Angostura bitters for nuanced depth and complexity, and also Falernum— a sweet almond syrup spiced with

Fast-forward to the mid-1950s. Hired by this point to develop the libation lineup at hotel cocktail bars in Hawai‘i, Bergeron introduced a reinvented version of the mai tai to the cocktail menu at The Royal Hawaiian in Waikīkī. Created for maximum tourist appeal, he infused the drink with pineapple juice and other sweet, fruity, colorful ingredients. It was a success, thus sealing The Royal Hawaiian mai tai’s fate as becoming —and remaining—one of Hawai‘i’s most revered rum cocktails. “‘Okole maluna!” Bottom’s up! The Banán Boys Childhood friends go bananas after returning home to O‘ahu.
PUT FOUR childhood friends together with a crazy idea and what do you get? For Royal Hawaiian Center, the answer is Banán, which is the brainchild of Matt Hong, Zak Barry, Luke Untermann and Galen McCleary. They’re the new kids on the block and, at their new beach store, you can enjoy a selection of chilled, sweet, non-dairy, soft-serve treats—perfect for the summer. Just turn right after passing The Cheesecake Factory, walk down between the two rows of surfboards and you’ll find Banán tucked away on the right. They have an assortment of soft-serve options and smoothies that are sure to cure any and all cool, sweet cravings. The soft-serve menu includes The Original, Chunkadelic, a chocolate lover’s dream come true; Guava Jams; and The Duke, which is a Royal Hawaiian Center exclusive and a decadent, must-try treat. The pièce de résistance of The Duke is a towering swirl of the original Banana Banán with açai. The cool

If you ask these young entrepreneurs about themselves, they’ll use such adjectives as “average and local boy.” When you ask them about their business idea, they’ll respond with “whimsical, lighthearted and playful.” Nothing could be further from the truth.
