On behalf of our 110+ merchants, world-class dining destinations and vibrant cultural program, I cordially welcome you into the Hawaiian new year and to the Royal Hawaiian Center. Kānaka (Hawaiians) celebrate the new year during the fall season of the Gregorian calendar. “Lonoikamakahiki” is the customary greeting during this time of peace and celebration in Hawai‘i. With each issue of our quarterly magazine, we curate the latest must-have couture of the season, feature culinary delights, and ensure your getaway to Hawai‘i is a royal experience enriched with Hawai‘i’s culture and history. Our R Magazine will help you make the most of your visit to Royal Hawaiian Center. The first half of the magazine is dedicated to high fashion from our international luxury flagships and serendipitous finds from our island boutiques. The cultural editorial can be found at midpoint. This issue’s editorial is the last in a series of four and comes with a musical video package 6 I ROYAL

viewable on our website, RoyalHawaiianCenter.com. Our merchants then take over by sharing their bounty of treasures, novelties and bargains. The latter section is made to order for foodies and connoisseurs alike. Directories and maps can be found on the final pages. We are in the midst of expansion and renovations. To further assist you in making your way around our three buildings, we’ve made ourselves more accessible with our new texting service. Simply text a message to 808.425.9088 (texting charges may apply) and our Guest Services Team will point you in the right direction or provide information about our merchants. You can also reach our Team by calling 808.922.2299. Expansion and renovations also mean new shops, and we’re excited to announce these additions to the Center’s ‘ohana (family). The famously known upscale grocer, Dean & Deluca, has a grab-and-go option in the arcade of Building B, Level 1, across from Anteprima Wirebag. It’s a great choice for gourmet cuisine on the quick. Next door, you’ll find Vitra Eyewear, known for its comprehensive selection of artisan, high-fashion eyewear. One floor above in the Pā‘ina Lānai Food Court, Wok to Walk is a 45-second, made-to-order stir-fry eatery that originated in Europe. Please visit RoyalHawaiianCenter. com for more details about what’s on the horizon: Tiffany & Co., Tim Ho Wan, Hermés expansion and more. Let me be the first to wish you and yours much happiness in this, the Hawaiian new year. As the holiday season approaches, all of us from Royal Hawaiian Center extend our aloha and mahalo for spending some time with us. E ‘olu‘olu, e kipa hou mai — please visit us again. E kipa mai — welcome! Marleen Akau Vice President, General Manager Royal Hawaiian Center

HARRY WINSTON’s timepiece and earrings create an ocean-inspired theme with diamond and sapphire jewels. Time Keeps on Ticking Cartier’s classic Tank watch turns 100 years young BY KRISTEN NEMOTO JAY

COURTESY CARTIER

WHEN IT COMES TO FASHION, fads and trends may come and go but classic styles will always stand the test of time. Cartier’s iconic Tank watch is no stranger to this rule as it celebrates its 100th anniversary of keeping time. Founder and French watchmaker, Louis Cartier, developed the modern semi-square-faced timepiece, while others were sticking to the traditional circular shape. The design represents the perfect alliance between technical excellence and geometrical style. The watch was inspired by the top views of an actual war tank, with the brancards—the vertical bars that run along each side of the face—resembling the tank’s treads. Although the Tank has evolved throughout its 100-year lifespan, the style remains true to its elegant and gender-neutral designs. It’s a beloved timepiece that is sure to last another century and beyond. Bldg. A, Level 1 808.922.7555

Ciao, Bella Bags! Valentino’s Rockstud collection continues to be popular and has become an arm candy dream come true

GOT TO HAND IT TO VALENTINO for being able to combine the stylings of the Victorian era with a mix of punk rock, Tokyo street style, vampire-esque chicness and bohemian flair. That was the least number of categories, anyway, to describe Valentino’s Paris Fashion Week fall/ winter 2017/2018 ready-to-wear runway collection, which made its debut on March 5, 2017. To top off the range of themes for audience members to swoon and Snapchat over were the steady pairings with Valentino’s cult-driven fashion masterpiece: the Rockstud bag. It didn’t matter what outfit a woman was wearing, the Rockstud bag—with it’s clean shapes and folds of rich leather material, tatted up with closely aligned gold studs—was timeless and effortless when coupled with anything from delicate lacy pastels to deephued coats and knee-high boots.

Born in 2010, under the former design team duo of Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri (who is now the art director for Christian Dior), the Rockstud collection made its statement at the Paris runway show, combining elegant dresses with Rockstud designed shoes, sporting a “shortened” 2.5-inch heel. The audience and eager fashion followers alike were pleasantly surprised that the new “it” shoe would no longer cause low back pain or sprained ankles. Not to mention the edgy studs placed along the straps and buckle created a uniquely tough-as-nails persona, yet with a purposeful feminine twist. And as the Rockstud low-inch heels’ shelf life began to shrink at every Valentino boutique throughout the world, the design team expanded the popularity of the studs into a range of purses, sunglasses, jewelry, small leather goods and tech accessories.

The Rockstud collection comes in leather goods, shoes, jewelry, small accessories and tech designs.

BY KRISTEN NEMOTO JAY

What’s especially unique to the Rockstud collection is its ability to morph and complete any outfit of choice. A structured pantsuit will be brightened up and not taken too seriously with a Rockstud tote bag. A jeans-and-T-shirt outfit will get an extra oomph of glam with a Rockstud clutch or crossbody bag. There’s especially the out-all-night ensemble, with which any Rockstud style of your choice would work perfectly. The Rockstud collection will be available at the Royal Hawaiian Center’s Valentino boutique, which has welcomed visitors from across the world to its 3,450-square-foot space for more than two years. The intentionally designed “Palazzo” atmosphere promotes an architectural oasis and creates an intimate and luxurious shopping experience. Through the inspirational talents of Italian fashion designer Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani, Valentino designs have glimmered at just about every celebrity event and red carpet gala. With Valentino’s increased following for the Rockstud collection, new and especially millennial customers, are eager to wait in line for their own pair. Fendi's Funfair collection will debut in November 2017, and will offer various styles and colors. Choose from an array of purses, backpacks, wallets on chains, keychains and iPhone covers.

Fendi’s Wild Ride

Fendi’s new collection embodies a history of fun IF LIFE WERE A CIRCUS, or a stage, then Italian brand Fendi would tell you to enjoy every ride, eat at every concession stand and act as if the spotlight were always shining. This holiday season, Fendi proudly presents its new capsule collection of Funfair-themed, ready-to-wear looks, bags, leathergoods, accessories and textiles. Colors of sky blue, cotton candy pink and sherbet orange are just some of the whimsical pastels that vividly pop against rich black leather, a purposeful contrast for an all-day wear item with a light-hearted and carnivalesque twist. Fendi’s futuristic sense of style has remained consistent throughout the years. Launched in 1925 by Adele and Edoardo Fendi, the family-owned business became known for its fur and leather goods in Via del Plebiscito within the heart of Rome. It was there that the iconic Pergamena, a type of leather with a yellow tint, was launched and ultimately became Fendi's signature color brand. After WWII, the Fendi family’s five daughters joined the business and adopted a more contemporary approach to the designs. In 1965, Karl Lagerfeld, an up-and-coming designer of the time, helped achieve a more ready-to-wear look with the designs by making the fur coats

wearable for the modern woman. His concepts developed into Fun Fur, which eventually became Fendi’s recognizable FF logo. Then there was the Baguette, a small rectangular-shaped bag with one strap, meant to be tucked under the arm, owing its name to the French bread. This created a cult-like following among many Fendi lovers, even making its way to several appearances on HBO’s “Sex and the City.” And who can forget the Fur Monster Key Rings? Their introduction created an overnight must-have accessory on a fashionista’s Fendi bag or key chain ring. Once again, Fendi’s dedication to ignite and inspire, while keeping it fun and relatable, is why so many return for more. This season’s Funfair is no exception to Fendi’s fashion rulebending, with its multi-colored designs and patterns equipped to help you celebrate the holiday season, inspire you to have your own sense of fun, and a chance to shine as if everyone is watching. Fendi is located in Building C, Levels 1 and 2. 808.923.7329.

Chosen son of the Paoa line A tribute to community leader Myron “Pinky” Thompson

(OPPOSITE PAGE) COURTESY MICHAEL YOUNG. ©‘ŌIWI TV

BY MONTE MCCOMBER

Myron “Pinky” Thompson (1924-2011) served as the president for the Polynesian Voyaging Society for more than two decades. He was immensely civicminded and his legacy of empowering the disenfranchised continues to shape Hawai‘i and its leaders. With this fourth and final installment of cultural editorials dedicated to the Polynesian Voyaging Society and the famed double-hulled canoe, Hōkūle‘a, we pay tribute to him. Guided only by celestial movements and ocean tides, the legendary seafarers of the Pacific Ocean, Mō‘īkeha, La‘amaikahiki, Pā‘ao and Kaha‘i, are said to have “pulled up” islands when successfully making landfall. It’s said that a navigator must be able to envision the final destination and the arrival in order to successfully make a voyage. The metaphor is twofold: they pull these images from their mind into the real world and then pull the land from the sea. Following in their wake, and on a planetary scale, the Polynesian Voyaging Society, more commonly known as PVS, pulled up not just islands but continents from Kanaloa’s (Hawaiian god of the sea and voyaging) briny domain during the Society’s maiden Mālama Honua (to care for mother Earth) worldwide voyage. After three years at sea circumnavigating the world, they returned to Hawaiian waters, sailing in on the jubilant ebb tides of ‘Āina Moana (Magic Island) on June 17, 2017. To celebrate the return of Hōkūle‘a, the “mother of canoes” and PVS’ flagship wa‘a kaulua (double-hulled canoe), an ‘aha ‘awa (a sacred ceremony centered around the drinking of

kava) was conducted to honor the non-instrument wayfinding traditions of kānaka (Hawaiians), known as ho‘okele wa‘a, and to signify the completion of Mālama Honua—the greatest maritime feat to date for the peoples of the Pacific Ocean. In 1976, the then-nascent navigation guild set off on their maiden long-sea voyage aboard Hōkūle‘a bound for Tahiti. Their goal was to retrace the route of an ancient voyage made by Chief Mō‘īkeha. The founding members of PVS, Herb Kawainui Kāne, Ben Finney and Tommy Holmes, deemed the entire affair a scientific experiment. To make this voyage, the crew gleaned bits of information found in Hawaiian historical accounts and combined that with the unbroken wayfinding traditions of our cousins in Micronesia. The result was a synthesis of what would become the new and modern knowledge base for Hawaiian wayfinding. Thirty-three days after departing Hawai‘i, Pius “Mau” Piailug, a master navigator from Satawal who led the voyage, pulled up Tahiti, and Hōkūle‘a sailed into the balmy shoals of Papa‘ete to a welcome of thunderous fanfare. Under Mau’s tutelage—and with the guidance from such other mentors as Will Kyselka—emerged the first ranks of contemporary navigators, which included Nainoa Thompson, Kalepa Babayan, Bruce Blankenfeld, Milton “Shorty” Bertelmann and Chadd ‘Ōnohi Paishon. Hōkūle‘a’s triumph validated ancient knowledge and awoke a people’s pride. The years ahead would lead to ongoing trailblazing and many firsts. R OYAL H AWAI I AN C EN TER

Myron Thompson’s beliefs and dreams are carried on by members of the Polynesian Voyaging Society. Fortunately for PVS, one of Hawai‘i’s truest sons would assume the helm and guide the Society through two decades of pioneering achievements. His name was Myron “Pinky” Thompson, father of Nainoa Thompson who is currently president of PVS and Hōkūle‘a master navigator. The late Thompson was born during the social and political change of the “Roaring Twenties.” His mother, a school teacher, and 58 I ROYAL

his father, an accountant, raised him and a number of foster youth at their home in Niu Valley on O‘ahu. He attended Punahou School on a scholarship and became a star football player. He was still in school when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941. Following his graduation in 1943, he enlisted in the Army. As a First Scout during World War II, Thompson was among the thousands of soldiers who braved the beaches for Operation Overlord, the invasion of northwest Europe via Normandy, France, on June 6,

1944. Both sides suffered a multitude of casualties, with Thompson being almost among them. While on the frontline, he was shot in his left eye and left for dead. At the battlefront hospital he would have met his demise, if not for the insistence of his fellow soldiers to have the field doctors attempt to save his life. His courage was well known among the enlisted ranks, and they believed such courage warranted a chance—slim as it was. Amazingly, he survived. For more than two years Thompson wore a head bandage that covered his eyes. Rather than allow this darkness to consume him, he found solace and clarity. It was during this time that he realized his life’s purpose: to serve his fellow man. When he looked upon the world again, it was with a new vision. Eager to make a difference in the aftermath of worldwide loss, he left Hawai‘i for higher learn(Previous spread and this page) Myron “Pinky” Thompson steered the Polynesian Voyaging Society into the future, inspiring many “firsts” and longdistance journeys across the Pacific.

Still inspired by “Uncle Pinky’s” vision, Hōkūle‘a crewmembers completed a historic journey around the world in June 2017. ing. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Colby College in Maine, and then received a master’s in social work from the University of Hawai‘i in 1952. For five years, he served as the executive director for Queen Lili‘uokalani Children’s Center beginning in 1962. From 1967-1970, he served as the state administrator under Governor John A. Burns. Four years later, he headed the Department of Social Services and Housing as executive director, and concurrently was the first State Land Use Commission Chairman. For two decades, from 1974 to 1994, he served as a trustee for Kamehameha Schools (then called Bishop Estate), which was 60 I ROYAL

established in 1887 in accordance with Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s last will and testament. During his tenure as trustee, he was recruited by Hawai‘i’s congressional delegation to serve as a spokesperson for programs aimed at Native Hawaiian enhancement. Thompson was the mastermind who connected federal, state and Kamehameha’s resources to launch such innovative programs as KEEP, Kamehameha Schools Early Education Project, a system of center-based preschools. Still brimming with elation of the 1976 voyage, PVS crewmembers were intent to again sail to Tahiti, but this time with Nainoa as navigator. On the evening of their departure,

Hōkūle‘a capsized in the Moloka‘i channel due to gale force winds and tall swells. With no escort boat for a quick rescue or to relay for help, the crew was forced to cling to Hōkūle‘a’s hull and hope for the best. The sun broke the following morning and still no passing vessel, by sea or air, to spot them in their distress. Fearing for the worst, crew member Eddie ‘Aikau, a big wave surfer and lifeguard, grabbed his surfboard and paddled for help. He was never again seen. Family, friends and surfers honor his memory with the epithet, “Eddie Would Go.” Help did eventually arrive. But the loss and failure of that voyage weighed heavily over the crewmembers, their vulnerability made real. It still weighs on them today. When Nainoa speaks of that ill-fated night, head lowered, teary-eyed and words choking to come out, his whisper of a recollection is painfully simple, “We weren’t ready.” At the threshold of immense regret and ready to end the great experiment, the older and wiser Thompson gave hope and purpose to that group of young men in mourning. Drawing from his own experience, “Uncle Pinky” counseled crewmembers and encouraged them to rise up to the challenge of a higher calling rather than surrender to a deep despair. He taught them how to accept blame, how to live with the consequences of their decision, but more importantly, how to rise again as a whole being. Forged by a strength that followed deep sorrow and the (This page) After sustaining a serious eye injury in Normandy, Myron Thompson emerged with a clear vision: to serve his fellow man. resilience of true explorers, PVS emerged anew. The hallmark of every voyage would now temper the thirst for exploration with the absolute and unwavering demand for safety to be the highest priority. Under this credo and the senior Thompson’s vigilant watch, Hōkūle‘a sailed into a series of firsts. In 1980, Hōkūle‘a sailed to Tahiti and back, navigated by Nainoa. It was the first time, in living memory, that a kanaka traversed the deep— like the great seafarers of old. The two-year Voyage of Rediscovery from 1985-87, Hōkūle‘a’s first extensive voyage—a 16,000-nautical-mile trek throughout the Polynesian Archipelago—is arguably the moment that symbolized the rebirth of Hawaiian navigation. In 1992, Hōkūle‘a sailed on its No Nā Mamo (For the Children) voyage bound for Ra‘iatea and Rarotonga (Cook Islands), as part of the Sixth Festival of Pacific Arts, which had the theme of “Seafaring Heritage.” Hawai‘i’s pride for Hōkūle‘a was felt throughout the Pacific and rekindled the fraternity among the many seafaring island nations. To culminate the festival’s festivities, Hōkūle‘a and 15 other wa‘a sailed into Avana Harbor in Muri Lagoon on October 21 in a pageantry only known in tale. The 1995 Nā ‘Ohana Holo Moana (The Voyaging Families of the Vast Ocean) included the newly christened

Hawai‘iloa and was a joint voyage to continue the efforts inaugurated in the 1992 voyage. In all, Hōkūle‘a sailed 11 successful voyages from 1980 to 2009. A joint effort between Hōkūle‘a and sister ship Hikianalia, Mālama Honua is PVS’ crown jewel of voyages, covering 60,000 nautical miles, more than 150 ports of call, 23 countries and territories and 245 crew members. Sadly, “Uncle Pinky” did not live to witness this incredible feat. Yet, his beliefs and dreams are carried on by PVS and, still to this very day, his legacy continues to guide Hōkūle‘a in her journeys. In the quiet moments following the elaborate welcome home celebration, Nainoa contemplated the mission of Mālama Honua. In his own homeland, there are unsettling events afoot or unfolding: deteriorating watersheds, polluted waterways, destruction atop sacred mountains and more. Recognizing that there was a lot more to be done in our own backyard, Nainoa declared that Mālama Honua would be extended ... possibly indefinitely. It’s easy to understand how Nainoa came to that decision. It’s the same one his father would have made. If the ‘āina (land), moana (ocean) and kānaka were in need, Hōkūle‘a will serve. As Nainoa so eloquently states, “Hōkūle‘a is not a canoe, it’s a living life force.” His father would be proud. Proud, indeed.

An Ode to “Uncle Pinky” One of the highest forms of honor in Hawaiian culture is to have a mele inoa, name song, written for you. ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i, Hawaiian language, is steeped in its use of metaphor abstracted from lore and legend. A haku mele (composer) must be masterfully versed

in Hawaiian poetry and history to craft a mele inoa of true substance. Noted haku mele, Randie Kamuela Fong, honored Thompson with a mele inoa entitled, “Kamalei A Paoa,” meaning “Chosen son of the Paoa line.” As a rare treat, Royal Hawaiian Center is happy to share a video recording of this song sung by the Kamehameha Schools’ Concert Glee Club. You can find the link to the video on our website at RoyalHawaiianCenter.com.

Shopping centers have always been hubs for socializing. And this is certainly the case at the Royal Hawaiian Center, where visitors from around the world gather to shop, dine and learn about Hawaiian culture. As the Center offers more experiences, consumers use the environment to bond with their children, family members and friends. They take ‘ukulele and hula lessons; they learn to strand a lei; they lounge on chairs sipping coffee during a shopping break; and they laugh and talk story while walking throughout this 310,000-squarefoot, four-tiered building. Here are some of our favorite fun experiences right here at the Center.

IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME of the year, especially for restaurants, which see an increased number of guests because of the holiday season. Dining out is, of course, a “thing.” In fact, last year the National Restaurant Association estimated that restaurants and bars served more than 100 million people. You can count Royal Hawaiian Center patrons among them. So the question is not “to eat or what to eat;” it’s where? Here are seven options.

Hungry Like a Wolf Before he was the Wolfgang of Wolfgang’s Steakhouse by Wolfgang Zwiener, the “little wolf,” il lupino, was a young man exploring Europe and falling in love with it. The building blocks of his Italian trattoria are Wolfgang’s Beijing Chinese own experience—one of authentic fondness Seafood and culinary Restaurant excellence. salumeria of fresh cut gourmet deli meats and cheeses, as well as an extensive wine bar menu, artisan pizza oven and many more traditional Italian appointments. A must-try is the Bistecca Fiorentina for a party of two. Buon Apetito! Building B, Level 1, 808.922.3400 My Thai Noi Thai Cuisine’s attention to detail and aesthetic surpass that of any Thai restaurant in Hawai‘i. Even the interior is elaborately designed and decorated, evoking images of opulent palaces in Bangkok. Audible “oohs and ahs” are the norm here and understandably so. The Ma Hor (Galloping Horses), for example, is finished tableside by pouring water to activate the dry ice, which releases plumes of smoke that shroud the “cavalry”—which take shape in the form of skewered pineapple slices—in a hazy cloud. Doraku Sushi

Composed of ground pork, peanuts and shallots, the mini meatball-like appetizers offer a contrast of sweet and sour with a touch of heat, thanks to a sliver of red chili pepper. And while this may be a common appetizer in Thailand, it’s rarely—if ever—found on Thai menus across the island. Building C, Level 3, 808.664.4039

Road to Happiness The best parties include bubbly cocktails and music with an infectious beat. Doraku’s got those, plus a full menu of stylish sushi. Try the ginger-infused Asian Mojito, which contains grassy shiso leaf as well as mint. Doraku’s sushi menu, with impeccably executed classics and several eyebrow-raising

specialty rolls, is just the beginning. The staff at Doraku will encourage you to dine “family-style,” which will allow you to sample more of the restaurant’s creative menu. Try the tuna tataki: perfectly pink poached sashimi-grade ‘ahi slices over a crunchy mound of sweet onion, mild wakame seaweed, shredded daikon and garnished with spicy kaiware sprouts, fried garlic chips, ponzu and garlic aioli. “Doraku is a restaurant, bar and gathering place that celebrates Japanese food, drink and hospitality,” says owner Kevin Aoki on the restaurant’s website. “It’s a place to have fun with friends or to unwind after a long day at work. It is the commitment to quality and attention to detail that make the Doraku experience live up to the meaning of its name—the Road to Happiness.” Building B, Level 3, 808.922.3323

Ancient Chinese Secret There’s an abbreviated list of authentic Chinese restaurants in Waikīkī, and Beijing Chinese Seafood Restaurant is at the top. Perusing the menu, you’ll find a laundry list of endless options to bring cheer. We all owe a debt of gratitude to the Chinese, who—ingeniously—have entire menus of food perfect for groups and sharing; it’s called dim sum, and Beijing’s is a wonderfully authentic place to experiment with it. Try the grassy, fresh chive dumplings, pan-fried for a crispy underside. Fold up crackly Peking duck in a delicate pancake with a dollop of sweet plum sauce and a pinch of shredded green onion, each bite simultaneously savory and sweet. Next, sample the wok-tossed prawns sauteed with an aromatic mixture of roasted garlic, green onions and red chili flakes for a little kick. Cubes of deep-fried tofu are perfectly crisp on the outside and still moist and soft inside. Served with a complementary dipping sauce composed of red vinegar and flecks of chili, this hot appetizer has to be one of the house specialties. Go on and dip—this is a celebration! Domo Arigato Guests have always admired Restaurant Suntory chefs’ abilities to cook for up to 12 guests at a single time. And they do so with little fanfare. They don’t twirl their knives or spatulas. They don’t make onions erupt. And they certainly don’t juggle. All eyes and attention are on where they belong: the food. And long before “organic” became fashionable, Suntory was already using organic tofu, organic eggs, organic soy sauce and free-range chicken. The unwillingness to compromise on the quality of the ingredients is paramount, according to general manager Nobuyuki Aoyama. ““The ingredients that we use are better than most others,” he says. “We’re more of an upscale teppanyaki place.” In the evening, seats around the teppan stations fill up quick, so try to arrive early. Prix-fixe teppanyaki dinners start at $25 for the free-range chicken and soar to $125 for an over-the-top, multi-course “Gourmet Suntory Course.” Building B, Level 3, 808.922.5511
