NAMAKA AND THE LITTLE FOLK A NEW TALE OF THE MENEHUNE BY ROYAL HAWAIIAN CENTER CULTURAL DIRECTOR MONTE MCCOMBER

The Menehune are described to have been no taller than 3 feet; visible only to each other; and able to complete feats of masonry, such as the building of a lava rock wall, in a single night. In fact, it was their rule that all endeavors be completed overnight, hence the origin of the saying: “He po hookahi, a ao ua pau”—In one night, and by dawn it is finished. R | CULTURE

Many cultures are known for their storytelling. The “Iliad” and “Odyssey” by Homer, Murasaki Shikibu’s “The Tale of Genji” and India’s “Bhagavad Gita” are but a few of the many classic literary works that have helped to shape our world. This year, our quarterly series of cultural editorials takes

“Eia ka e nānā ana au iā ‘oe! Maopopo ia’u kāu e hana nei. A‘o wau wale nō kai ‘ike ka ‘oiai’o.” –PANA’EWA

inspiration from Hawai‘i’s storytelling traditions. We revisit them. We reimagine them. And from their framework, weave a new story. Our litany of fiction begins with a two-part series of the Menehune, a retelling of the architectural feats of these miniature people. E kuhi hou pū kākou i nā mo‘—Let’s reimagine these stories together.

I mean I’ve been watching you! I know what you’re up to. And I’m the only one who knows the truth. –PANA‘EWA

Whispers. Faint murmurs. This was the extent of the discussions surrounding the new lava rock wall that had suddenly appeared overnight along the valley wall. The stones were expertly placed and the fit was perfect. Who built it? How did they manage to do it in just one night? Why is everyone afraid to talk about it? Nāmaka had a hundred questions—he always did—but there were no answers. Just whispers and this new stone structure. Nāmaka had always been overly curious. His investigative nature had landed him in trouble throughout his childhood and earned him the moniker, Nāmakanīele. He didn’t care that others mocked him. He wore the pejorative suffix nīele, meaning busybody, as a badge of honor. He was, indeed, inquisitive to a fault. Unlike other days, today, Nāmaka

was quiet. He went about his business, completing chores and the like without even a peep. It was important, for him, to keep quiet. How else could he hear the whisperings in the village? He

sense of them. As a ruse, he had decided to fashion a lei made of orange kaona‘oa, which grew throughout the village, providing him the perfect excuse for wandering hither and yon. If NÄ maka was not so absorbed with his spying, he would have noticed his lei had grown long enough to fit around a seal. Nevertheless, he continued to weave and listen. Nothing they were

saying made any sense. No one had any idea of who did it. His hands, familiar with the weaving pattern, moved of their own accord until he happened to steal a peek of his handiwork. He stopped weaving and exhaled his disappointment aloud. In that moment, he remembered he was supposed to be making a lei … to fit a person. As he walked home, he happened upon Pana‘ewa, who was as peculiar as the things he said. He lived as a hermit, but often times he would suddenly appear in the village unannounced and vanish just as quickly. “Auē nō ho‘i!” exclaimed Pana‘ewa in seeing the large lei.

A laila ‘ike akula ‘o ia iā ala. He kino li’ili’i. Ma kahi o ka nui o ke keiki li’ili’i, akā eia ho’i ‘a’ole nō ia he keiki. ‘A’ole ia he kanaka, he menehune.

“Did you make that for your portly aunt?” He then squealed at his own joke. “I should think it would make a lovely choker around her neck.” He squealed again, delighted at his wit. Nāmaka paid him no attention. He was beginning to think that no one knew anything and he craved answers. He turned and walked away. “E kali ‘oe!” shouted Pana‘ewa, holding his hand out to emphasize

And then he saw it. A small figure. The size of a young child but, to his amazement, not a child at all. No, not a man. A menehune. –NĀMAKA

the order to halt. Nāmaka was shocked by the gesture and looked puzzled. “I’ve been watching you.” “What do you mean?” “I mean I’ve been watching you! I know what you’re up to. And I’m the only one who knows the truth.” “I doubt that,” Nāmaka said mockingly. “You doubt me? You think I’m lying? You think I’m just an old

crazy fool?” shrieked Pana‘ewa, the veins in his neck swelling. “Speak then! No games! If you know the truth, then tell me!” Incensed by Nāmaka’s rudeness, Pana‘ewa continued his tirade, spitting out his words as he recounted what his hermit eyes had witnessed in the dark. His hands

moved furiously as he spoke, and with each gesture he turned in the direction that his hands were moving. As Pana‘ewa’s story progressed, his breathing slowed. They could have easily slipped into the night, if it wasn’t for the call of Nāmaka’s father. That stern tone was unmistakable and it was to be obeyed. Before leaving, Nāmaka extended his hands out, widening the circle of the lei. Pana‘ewa lowered

his head and Nāmaka placed the lei over Pana‘ewa’s head and gingerly rested it on his shoulders saying, “He makana nou (A gift for you).” Pana‘ewa was touched by the gesture. “Hele ‘oe. E hele ‘oe.” He struggled to get the words out. As he dashed off, Nāmaka cupped his hands to his mouth, lifted his head towards the sky and shouted, “E hui ana kāua i ka lā ‘apōpō!” ensuring that Pana‘ewa knew he intended to hear the remainder of the story tomorrow. He then leapt into a sprint. The second of two parts of the story of “Nāmaka and the Little Folk: A New Tale of the Menehune” will appear in the May 15 issue of R. The complete story is now available at rmagazinewaikiki.com.

IT’S 10 ON A MONDAY MORNING and Olena Heu sits down in front of steamed baskets of dim sum at Tim Ho Wan. The former Miss Hawai‘i and morning news anchorwoman-turned-social media influencer is eager to share her favorite dishes from restaurants at the Royal Hawaiian Center— starting with this Hong Kong-based dim sum chain that quickly rose to fame for being the “world’s most inexpensive Michelin starred restaurant.” The Kaua‘i native frequents the center at least twice a month, citing the convenience of parking and shopping here. And, undoubtedly, the dining.

MORE THAN JUST

DESS

One dessert means heart. Another translates to round and round. And the third is named after its affable founder.

HEART TO HEART Since opening last September, Kokoro Café owners, Gil and Lisa Ann Shin, have poured their hearts into this venture. “From our heart to yours, we want to put a smile on your face through our desserts,” said Gil Shin during a media preview. “We want to give customers that happiness we get when we eat dessert.” A popular street food in Japan, taiyaki features a fish-shaped waffle filled with a swirl of soft-serve. The menu consists of three compact desserts: the Mochi-Pop, a mocha waffle covered with a sweet glaze; the Dole Whip Float, a frozen POG (Passion Orange Guava) slush topped with chunks of pineapple; and the Shaka-Boom, which can be filled with a choice of chocolate cream, sweet red bean or coconut haupia, then flavored with pineapple Dole whip, creamy coconut, açai berry or vanilla bean. 9 PHO FACTORY Pronounced “fuh,” pho is served with fresh vegetables and herbs, including bean sprouts, Thai basil, mint, lime and peppers. These are garnishes, which are not meant to interfere with the medley of rice noodles and meat. Rip up a few leaves of herbs, sprinkle it over and squeeze a bit of lime if desired. Chopsticks in one hand and a soup spoon in the other, don't be shy and slurp away.

10 MAHALOHA BURGER With lines forming two and three deep at the counter,

for its 100-percent, grassfed Big Island beef. Burger fans can be assured that the patties are always fresh and never frozen. The original Mahaloha Burger is topped with a “Happy Sauce” and sandwiched between a grilled sweet buttered bun. It’s as good as any gourmet burger— and even better when you add slices of bacon.

Enjoy curries with bold combinations of spices, as well as golden Japanese curry and black-smoked Hayashi curry. Infused with lemongrass, the savory coconut curry comes with a choice of beef, chicken or seafood. In addition to curry, the cafe also prepares the popular loco moco, offering two scoops of rice, topped with a hamburger patty and two sunny-side-up eggs, all smothered in gravy.
