Community Profiles
Relax and Rejuvenate Welcome to spectacular North Lake Tahoe! Whether you are here for the very first time, or have been returning for generations, this magical place can’t help but rejuvenate and inspire you. The crystal clear waters of this second largest alpine lake in the world provide the perfect opportunity to experience the youthful exuberance of rejuvenation. The Washoe Indians believed that the waters of Lake Tahoe held special powers of healing. Plan to spend time in or around the water and watch the outside stress of daily living wash away. Stand up paddling (SUP) on Lake Tahoe might be a new adventure to try, and once you get that mastered, try a little yoga on the board to test your balance! If you prefer to have your feet on dry land, then hiking or biking might be your choice of recreational inspiration. The Tahoe Rim Trail is one of the most scenic trails in the world, stretching for 165 miles overlooking the lake. Try a section on foot or bike for unforgettable views. If mountain biking is your passion, the Flume Trail on the northeast side of the lake is absolutely incredible for views and vistas, and with a shuttle to the top, it’s a fun downhill ride. Speaking of peaks, you won’t want to miss the ski areas without their blanket of snow! Take a cable car up to High Camp pool at Squaw Valley or test the mountain bike trails at Northstar California, Peak your adventure this summer! If you are looking for culture, music and culinary pleasure, Tahoe is sure to please. Enjoy Shakespeare on the beach at Sand Harbor, free music concerts every Friday and Sunday at Kings Beach and Tahoe City, and sample from a broad variety of excellent restaurants and wine tastings. Stop by one of our Visitor Information Centers and we will be happy to provide more exciting ideas to enhance your vacation experience. If you have a smartphone, check out our mobile friendly website at www.GoTahoeNorth.com for activities, events and musical entertainment on the go. Enjoy!

North Tahoe is home to elite athletes and their world-class playgrounds North Tahoe attracts and creates some of the best athletes in the world. It’s rugged terrain and unbeatable beauty lure adventurous spirits from around the globe. Winter athletes from this region are among the most famous on the globe, from Johnny Moseley to Julia Mancuso to Jeremy Jones. But North Tahoe also has a rich history of summer sports heroes, including runners, cyclists and climbers. Climber Emily Harrington is the latest in a long line of “rock stars” who have called this area home (including climbing pioneer Jim Bridwell). “I love Tahoe for its versatility,” says Harrington, who competes in international climbing competitions. “There is so much to do, year-round, and a great community to do it with. Everyone here seems stoked to get outside no matter what the season, and it’s motivated me to become a more wellrounded athlete.”
“Tahoe is an extraordinarily beautiful place that is a yearround playground,” says Rory Bosio, a born and raised local who is one of the world’s best ultra-distance runners. Many top ultra-runners come from North Tahoe—not surprising when you consider that the sport was born here. The first Western States 100 Endurance Run was staged here in 1977, the world’s first 100-mile foot race. With a maximum of 388 runners allowed in this now-legendary race, most runners must “win” a stiff entry lottery before lining up at the start line in Squaw Valley. “Tahoe just has it all for mountain sports,” says professional rock climber, Dave Hatchett, publisher of Tahoe Bouldering Guides and author of Bouldering Lake Tahoe: North/West Edition. “The bouldering here is world class. The wide variety of places to go and the lack of crowds make it very appealing. There seems to be an almost endless supply of unclimbed boul-

ders to explore around North Lake Tahoe with accessible cliffs and great climbs found throughout the region.” There are hundreds of miles of outstanding mountain bike trails in the North Tahoe region. Northstar California has lift-served trails including some expert downhills, features and jumps. For less extreme bikers, both Northstar and Tahoe Cross-Country (near Tahoe City) have beautiful beginner and intermediate trails. “I think we have some of the best mountain biking trails in the world,” says professional multisport athlete Kara LaPoint. “This is a dream location for endurance athletes and adventure seekers! There is no shortage of very challenging terrain to practice on here, which makes conquering even the toughest of race courses seem manageable.” Extreme athletes and their fans descend on Tahoe throughout the summer to compete in triathlons, endurance mountain bike races, ultramarathons, and Iron Man, Tough Mudder and Spartan competitions. Whether you’re an elite athlete or just wanting to experience the playgrounds they enjoy—from gorgeous granite at Donner Summit to boulders at Sugar Pine Point, the Flume Trail to the Tahoe Rim Trail—Tahoe offers an idyllic environment for everyone to test their skills and push their limits.
“Tahoe is an extraordinarily beautiful place that is a year-round playground,” says Rory Bosio, a born and raised local who is one of the world’s best ultra-distance runners.

Clear Wonder
Preserving Lake Tahoe’s pristine waters
©JUSTIN MAJECZKY
By Chaco Mohler Lake Tahoe’s water is so clear it takes your breath away. On a calm day, a boat on its surface appears to be floating in mid-air. Huge granite boulders are visible 30, 50, even 70 feet below! Tahoe is one of the world’s greatest natural wonders, but lately it’s also being recognized as a human wonder. Efforts by people from all walks of life—across political and state lines, from locals to presidents—have halted the lake’s four-decade decline in water clarity. Together we are working to “Keep Tahoe Blue.” For 40 years, researchers had recorded a steady decline of one foot per year in the lake’s clarity. In 1997, President Bill Clinton signed an Executive Order that set in motion large-scale restoration of Tahoe’s major watersheds, a process supported by Congress in 2001 with the passing of the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act. Ten years later, signs of a slowdown in the one-footper-year decline began to appear. Only in the last few years, however, have scientists felt confident enough to confirm that Tahoe’s clarity has been stabilized. It was in the 1960s that researchers began to document the steady decline in Lake Tahoe’s clarity. Tahoe was fast becoming “America’s Year-Round Playground” as the 1960 Winter
Olympics at Squaw Valley spurred a local real estate boom. Vacation home and resort construction was, at times, done with little concern for preserving wetlands and watersheds. In 1968, scientists began to measure the lake’s clarity using a small, white plate lowered into Tahoe’s depths, a method still used today. At that time, visibility was measured at over 100 feet. In 1969, Congress created the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, beginning the regulation of construction across the basin’s two states. It marked the start of a contentious few decades with developers and environmentalists squaring off, and homeowners often squeezed between. Due to continuing research by University of California Davis scientists and the “Keep Tahoe Blue” stickers of the League to Save Lake Tahoe (seen on car bumpers throughout the nation), Tahoe’s continually declining water clarity stayed in the public’s consciousness. The tide seemed to change for Tahoe in the 1990s when everyone began to recognize that saving this remarkable natural wonder was good for everyone—businesspeople, residents or environmentalists. Senators from both parties urged Clinton and Vice President Al Gore to visit the area in 1997 and to sign the www.GoTahoeNorth.com | SUMMER 2015 25

6/15/15 2:48 PM
above-mentioned Executive Order making the lake’s preservation a national priority. Since then, funding for Tahoe restoration has largely come from the sale of federal desert lands in Southern Nevada. The year of that presidential visit marked the lowest clarity reading in Tahoe’s history: 64.1 feet. Five years later in 2003, clarity had increased by almost 14 feet to 78 feet! In 2014, the clarity level reached 77.8 feet. While clarity moves up and down annually, affected by, among other factors, changing annual precipitation, a decade-and-a-half of watershed restoration has effectively stabilized the decline. The most optimistic of scientists believe our actions might even reverse the decades of decline. How is this possible? Man’s efforts are helped by Tahoe’s relatively small watershed and the area’s abundant erosion-resistant granite rock. While Lake Tahoe could face future challenges to its pristine waters, including climate change, research and restoration experts are continuing their work protecting this national treasure. You can do your part! The new campaign Take Care Tahoe is a collaborative effort among local agencies that invites businesses and individuals to promote stewardship of Tahoe’s environment. Visit their website at takecaretahoe.org for more information. Over 1,600 feet deep, Tahoe has more water than all the man-made reservoirs in America combined. Now this massive alpine lake might also become a symbol of something even more powerful: man’s ability to help nature heal herself. Stroll along its shore, take a cruise across its expansive blue surface, paddle its coves or take a plunge into its clear, cool waters. Memories of this beautiful, pristine place will be ones you’ll carry with you through the years.
Tahoe Fund supports environmental improvement projects and the new “Take Care Tahoe” stewardship education campaign.

Bring a picnic and settle into the sand for a lazy summer day on the sand, or stroll the shoreline and dine under umbrellas. South-facing and sun-soaked from dawn to dusk, this is Tahoe’s banana belt and its wide beach is particularly popular with families. Parking is available adjacent to the beach with a number of restaurants and watering holes nearby. Beachfront shops rent kayaks, paddleboards and other water toys. A favorite paddling excursion is east to Crystal Bay point and it’s mammoth islands of granite boulders. Or just paddle around in the sandy shallows that extend well into the lake—some of Tahoe’s warmest waters. North Tahoe Regional Park offers miles of trails for hiking and biking, tennis courts, an 18-hole disc golf course, and large playing fields for soccer, etc. There are both real and mini golf courses in Kings Beach. Incline Village/Crystal Bay At one time, Incline Village stood at the site of the Comstock era’s Great Incline Railway. Today, the town boosts great galleries, restaurants, and spectacular estates along Lakeshore Blvd. Incline has a handful of malls, mostly located along Highway 28, offering a wide variety of dining and shopping. There is easy access to high-mountain hiking trails off of Mt. Rose Highway (#431) with a spectacular viewpoint a few miles above Incline. Just out of town to the east, the Flume Trail offers mountain bikers a thrill ride on single-track far above the lake. Spend a perfect Tahoe day at Sand Harbor’s fabulous beaches and catch a Shakespeare play there at night on one of the world’s most beautiful stages. To learn more about someone who could have been a Shakespeare character, eccentric millionaire George Whittel, tour Thunderbird Lodge, the estate he built with secret tunnels and a zoo on a spectacular East Shore point. For an experience of cutting-edge science, Tahoe Science Center has 3-D movies and interactive exhibits, produced by U.C. Davis researchers that are the world-experts in their fields. Straddling the California/Nevada border, Crystal Bay has both glittering scenery and glittering casino lights. Gaming action is found at three casinos, with Crystal Bay Club regularly featuring well-known music acts on its two stages.

West Shore The peaks of the Sierra Crest tower over Tahoe’s azure waters on this beautiful and serene stretch of shoreline. West Shore includes the small communities of Sunnyside, Homewood, Tahoma and Meeks Bay, as well as marinas, picnic grounds, and three state parks. Summer recreation abounds: waterskiing, paddle boarding, hiking, mountain biking and more. Sugar Pine Point State Park is the site of the lovely and historic Ehrman Mansion and grounds. Bliss State Park has a wonderful sandy beach and granite coves and cliffs. There is world-famous scenery at Emerald Bay State Park as well as a short hike down below Eagle Falls to a Norwegian “castle,” Vikingsholm. A lovely bike path runs much of the length of the West Shore, running through forests, past beaches and lake views, restaurants and delis. Despite the recent drought, there is still deep water off West Shore with marinas offering boat, paddleboard and jet-ski rentals. Launching of larger sailboats is available at Obexer’s Boat Company in Homewood. Whether on a calm morning of fishing or waterskiing, or dining under sunsets and stars, West Shore captures the relaxed, summer vacation magic of a by-gone era, carried forward by generations of families who return to these shores, summer after summer.

Truckee The historic Old West town of Truckee is less than 15 miles from North Lake Tahoe. Its downtown buildings are wonderfully preserved and now housing a wide variety of modern boutiques, restaurants, watering-holes, galleries and shops. Truckee and its environs played a seminal role in the opening of the American West, first as a stop the main route pioneers took to California, then as site of the most difficult track-laying of the first Intercontinental Railroad, then as a notorious frontier town, center of the ice-industry and, over 100 years ago, one of the West’s first winter mountain resorts. The Donner Memorial State Park has opened a new museum and also has quiet beaches on the shores of Donner Lake. At the lake’s western end is a popular park with sandy beaches, large lawns, water toy rentals and swimming area. Nearby Donner Summit has world-class rock climbing and beautiful views off Old Highway 40. Tahoe Donner is just above Truckee with a popular 18-hole golf course and clubhouse. Hiking and biking routes are nearby. For a river-side cycle, Truckee and the community of Glenshire are now connected by a beautiful bike route—Truckee Legacy Trail. There’s something for everyone to explore and enjoy in and around this vibrant mountain town.
