Relax and Rejuvenate Welcome to spectacular North Lake Tahoe! Whether you are here for the very first time, or have been returning for generations, this magical place can’t help but reinvigorate and inspire you. The crystal-clear waters of this, the world’s second-largest alpine lake provide the perfect opportunity to experience the youthful exuberance of rejuvenation. The Washoe Indians believed that the waters of Lake Tahoe held special powers of healing. Plan to spend time in or around the water and watch the stress of daily living wash away. The stand-up paddling (SUP) on Lake Tahoe might be a new adventure to try, and once you get that mastered, try a little yoga on the board to test your balance! North Lake Tahoe is the high-altitude capital of human-powered sports. Try one of the many events that will challenge your endurance and skill, from Tough Mudder in June to Spartan World Championships in October. For hikers, the Tahoe Rim Trail is one of the most scenic trails in the world, stretching for 165 miles around the rim overlooking the lake. If mountain biking is your passion, the Flume Trail on the northeast side of the lake is absolutely incredible for vistas. Take the shuttle to the start of the trail and enjoy a fun downhill ride. Speaking of peak experiences, you won’t want to miss visiting the ski areas without their blanket of snow! Take a cable car up to High Camp pool at Squaw or test the mountain bike trails at Northstar. “Peak your Adventure” this summer! If you are looking for culture, music and culinary pleasures, Tahoe is sure to please. Enjoy Shakespeare on the beach at Sand Harbor, or experience High Notes, free concerts around the region almost every night of the week. Finally, stop by one of our Visitor Information Centers and we will be happy to provide additional exciting ideas to enhance your vacation experience. And if you have a smartphone, check out our mobile-friendly website at www.GoTahoeNorth.com for activities, events and musical entertainment on the go. Enjoy!

FEATURES | MOUNTAIN BIKING
World-Class Wheeling
Epic, entertaining rides for every cyclist at any speed North Lake Tahoe has a long history as a hot spot for summer pedal power. Many miles of paved cycling paths run between local communities, and the nearby peaks are crisscrossed with exciting mountain bike single-track and long, twisting fire roads. Mountain biking was born “just down the road” in Marin County, California, so it’s no surprise that these early mountain bikers helped create some of Tahoe’s famous trails. One such “fat tire” pioneer is Peter Underwood, co-owner of Olympic Bike Shop, a landmark in Tahoe City for over 40 years. Olympic rents out most every type of bike, from full-suspension to beach cruiser, with a crew of skilled mechanics to tune up your ride. “North Lake Tahoe biking is ideal for all abilities,” says Underwood, “from families on bike paths towing infant trailers to some of the world’s most spectacular single-track trails.” It’s an environment that has long attracted, or created, world-class athletes of both road biking and mountain biking varieties. Greg LeMond, the first American to win the Tour de France, built up his cycling prowess as a teenager riding over Mt. Rose Highway 431 from Reno to Incline Village. Lately, a new breed of mountain bike and multisport competitors, such as Kara LaPoint, have made their home here. “I think we have some of the best mountain biking trails in the world,” says LaPoint. “There is no shortage of challenging terrain 18 SUMMER 2016 | North Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide
to practice on, which makes conquering even the toughest of the world’s race courses seem manageable.” At the top of the list of North Tahoe’s most spectacular mountain bike rides is the Flume Trail. Clinging to a mountainside above Sand Harbor State Park, the Flume Trail is breathtaking both for its views and for narrow stretches where the fainthearted might prefer walking their bikes. These days, riders of the trail can emphasize the “spectacular” and minimize the “challenge” due to the convenient services of Flume Trail Bikes, a rental facility and shuttle service operating at the trail’s terminus at Tunnel Creek Café in Incline Village. Park your car, grab a latte, get outfitted and catch a shuttle for the long climb to the ride’s start on Spooner Summit. There are literally hundreds of miles of mountain bike trails in the North Tahoe region. The largest, most diverse network is found in the forests behind Tahoe City, Tahoe Vista and Kings Beach, with numerous trailhead access points in these communities and atop Highway 267. In addition, two excellent mountain bike parks connect to this system. Northstar California has lift-served trails for the full range of abilities, including expert downhills, elevated features and jumps. Tahoe Cross Country, near Tahoe City, has beautiful beginner and intermediate trails winding through forests and past meadows and lake views.

FEATURES | MOUNTAIN BIKING
Looking for a smoother, paved journey? One Sierra summer tradition is a ride down the Truckee River Bike Path, which runs from Tahoe City to Squaw Valley. This gentle-cycling, inline-skating and walking route follows the riverbank for five miles then extends an additional two miles to the Village at Squaw Valley. The bike path also runs along the Tahoe City’s lakeshore up to Dollar Hill. Another long, paved bike path heads south 10 miles from Tahoe City to Sugar Pine Point State Park, with a final section near Homewood due for completion this summer. Construction of an additional 3/4-mile extension south to Meeks Bay will be underway in 2017. Also in the works is a regionwide Resort Triangle paved bike path: Tahoe City to Truckee to Kings Beach to Tahoe City. This already popular 37-mile route combines river canyon speed, a mountain pass climb on Highway 267 and the scenic lakeshore stretch. Portions of this new, off-road bike path have been recently completed in Martis Valley near Northstar, with another section under construction along the north shore near Carnelian Bay. There’s a route for every kind of cyclist in North Lake Tahoe, from the thrill of jumping a gap at Northstar’s mountain bike park to a peaceful family ride along the river with Junior napping in the infant trailer. So get out in the pure, Sierra mountain air this summer and enjoy a spin of the spokes!

MARITIME HISTORY | FEATURES
Plying the Water
Tahoe’s long maritime history is embodied in the elegant wooden boats that still travel this inland sea.

By Alison Bender
The beautiful blue surface of Lake Tahoe seems to beckon to travelers, enticing them to venture out into that magical space between water and wind. It’s a call that has been answered for generations in various forms of maritime travel. The Washoe Indians were the earliest people to summer at Lake Tahoe, spending the warmer months on its shores and traversing the cool, glassy waters by canoe. Modern vessels came to the lake not long after Tahoe’s “discovery” in 1844. The first steamship, Governor Blaisdel, launched in 1864 to carry passengers and cargo, and conveyed timber for use in the Comstock Lode’s mines. In 1895, D.L. Bliss, for whom a West Shore state park is named, commissioned the Union Iron Works of San Francisco to build an opulent steamer. The SS Tahoe, or as it was also known, “the Queen of the Lake,” was Tahoe’s grandest steamship of the era. It was 168 feet long and contained a main travel compartment, parlor and staterooms, and carried up to 200 passengers as well as mail and freight. However, as automobiles became the main source of transportation, and the road circumnavigating the lake was
completed, the SS Tahoe lost its glory. In August of 1940, it was scuttled off the Glenbrook shore. As steamers waned, wooden boats, or “woodies,” became popular. Lake Tahoe was a speedboat racing playground for the elite, who favored the elegant mahogany and chrome lines of Rivas, Chris-Crafts and Gar Woods. One such extravagant woodie is the Thunderbird yacht, which can still be seen at the East Shore’s Thunderbird Estate. The estate was built in 1939 by eccentric magnate George Whittell Jr., who decided that if he was going to have the most spectacular home on the lake, he needed the most spectacular boat to go with it. He commissioned naval architect John L. Hacker to build the 55-foot yacht, complete with aircraft engines and styled after Whittell’s Duesenberg automobiles and his Douglas DC-2 aircraft. Built in Michigan, the Thunderbird arrived at Lake Tahoe in 1940. When World War II broke out, Whittell, afraid the craft’s engines would be conscripted into military service, hid it in the Thunderbird boathouse, where it remained mostly neglected www.GoTahoeNorth.com | SUMMER 2016 27

until it was bought by casino magnate Bill Harrah in 1962. The end of World War II ushered in a golden age of speedboat racing on Lake Tahoe, where names like Stanley Dollar, Henry Kaiser and Bill Stead frequently competed. The boats were sleek and fast. Some, such as Kaiser’s Hornet II (rechristened Fleur du Lac, after the West Shore magnate’s lakefront estate), were repowered with war surplus airplane engines. Kaiser’s Scooter Too, which raced beginning in 1955, was said to reach speeds of 180 miles per hour. The glory of Tahoe’s on-water past is on display at the Tahoe Maritime Museum, which has relocated this summer 28 SUMMER 2016 | North Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide
to just outside Tahoe City on the Tahoe Tree property. Its collection boasts more than 30 craft, from the Shanghai, a recovered 1890s steam launch, to elegant runabouts. There is also a collection of inboard and outboard motors, racing trophies, historic Lake Tahoe photographs, vintage water skis and more. For an up-close look at the area’s classic crafts, don’t miss the Concours d’Elegance, this year held August 12-13 at the West Shore’s Obexer’s Boat Company. Or experience for yourself the magic of Lake Tahoe’s surface on a chartered cruise or boat rental. You’ll be continuing a long tradition!

New Look at an Old Tradition The Tahoe Maritime Museum’s new location
Since 1988, the Tahoe Maritime Museum has been acquiring and preserving boats and artifacts from Tahoe’s century-plus of maritime history—from gleaming mahogany and chrome speedboats to early canoes and sail craft. For years, the museum has been headquartered in Homewood in an attractive facility but of a size that required the majority of the museum’s growing collection be stored in remote warehouses. The museum’s recent purchase of its new property (the former Tahoe City Nursery) will eventually allow it to display for the public all of its intriguing collection. Lovers of the art and ingenuity of “messing about with boats” will find plenty to ogle here. “Sport & Leisure at the Lake” is the museum’s opening exhibit, with items dating back 100 years to Tahoe’s Gilded Age resorts. Make sure to stop at the museum’s expanded gift shop for a souvenir of your visit to this “mountain sea.” On summer Sundays, rides are available on the museum’s 1947 Chris-Craft IV Phunn.

Kings Beach/Tahoe Vista Those looking to have a laid-back day at the beach will enjoy this fun and charming stretch of North Lake Tahoe. Bring a picnic and settle in for a lazy summer day on the sand, or stroll the shoreline and dine under umbrellas. South-facing and sun-soaked from dawn to dusk, this is Tahoe’s banana belt and its wide beach is particularly popular with families. Parking is available adjacent to the beach, with a number of restaurants and watering holes nearby. Beachfront shops rent kayaks, paddleboards and other water toys. A favorite paddling excursion is east to Crystal Bay point and its mammoth islands of granite boulders. Or just paddle around in the sandy shallows that extend well into the lake, where you’ll find some of Tahoe’s warmest waters. North Tahoe Regional Park offers miles of trails for hiking and biking, tennis courts, an 18-hole disc golf course and large playing fields for soccer and other sports. There are both full and mini golf courses in Kings Beach. Shopping in Kings Beach includes eclectic boutiques and gift shops. When the sun sets, this stretch of shoreline has a full range of restaurants, from fine dining to take-out to authentic Mexican cuisine.

Incline Village/Crystal Bay At one time, Incline Village stood at the site of the Comstock era’s Great Incline Railway. Today, the town boasts great galleries, restaurants and spectacular estates along Lakeshore Blvd. Incline has a handful of malls, mostly located along Highway 28, offering a wide variety of dining and shopping. There is easy access to high-mountain hiking trails off of Mt. Rose Highway 431 with a spectacular viewpoint a few miles above Incline. Just out of town to the east, the Flume Trail offers mountain bikers a thrill ride on single-track far above the lake. Spend a perfect Tahoe day at Sand Harbor’s fabulous beaches and catch a Shakespeare play there at night on one of the world’s most beautiful stages. To learn more about someone who could have been a Shakespeare character in his own right, eccentric millionaire George Whittel, tour Thunderbird Lodge, the estate he built with secret tunnels and a zoo on a spectacular East Shore point. For an experience of cutting-edge science, Tahoe Science Center has 3-D movies and interactive exhibits produced by UC Davis researchers, the world-experts in their fields. Straddling the California/Nevada border, Crystal Bay has both glittering scenery and glittering casino lights. Gaming action is found at three casinos, with Crystal Bay Club regularly featuring well-known music acts on its two stages.

West Shore The peaks of the Sierra Crest tower over Tahoe’s azure waters on this beautiful and serene stretch of shoreline. West Shore includes the small communities of Sunnyside, Homewood, Tahoma and Meeks Bay, as well as marinas, picnic grounds and three state parks. Summer recreation abounds: waterskiing, paddleboarding, hiking, mountain biking and more. Sugar Pine Point State Park is the site of the lovely and historic Ehrman Mansion and grounds. Bliss State Park has a wonderful sandy beach and granite coves and cliffs. There is world-famous scenery at Emerald Bay State Park as well as a short hike down below Eagle Falls to a Norwegian “castle,” Vikingsholm. A lovely bike path runs along much of the length of the West Shore through forests, past beaches and lake views, restaurants and delis. Despite the recent drought, there is still deep water off West Shore with marinas offering boat, paddleboard and jet-ski rentals. Launching of larger sailboats is available at Obexer’s Boat Company in Homewood. Whether on a calm morning of fishing or waterskiing, or dining under sunsets and stars, West Shore captures the relaxed, summer vacation magic of a by-gone era, carried forward by generations of families who return to these shores, summer after summer.

Truckee The historic Old West town of Truckee is less than 15 miles from North Lake Tahoe. Its downtown buildings are wonderfully preserved and house a wide variety of modern boutiques, restaurants, watering holes, galleries and shops. Truckee and its environs played a seminal role in the opening of the American West, first as a stop on the route pioneers took to California, then as the site of the most difficult phase of track-laying of the first Intercontinental Railroad. It was once a notorious frontier town, the center of the ice industry and, more than 100 years ago, the site of one of the West’s first winter mountain resorts. At Donner Memorial State Park you’ll find a museum as well as quiet beaches on the shores of Donner Lake. At the lake’s western end is a popular park with sandy beaches, large lawns, water toy rentals and swimming area. Nearby Donner Summit has world-class rock climbing and beautiful views off Old Highway 40. Tahoe Donner is just above Truckee with a popular 18-hole golf course and clubhouse. Hiking and biking routes are nearby. For a riverside cycle, Truckee and the community of Glenshire are now connected by a beautiful bike route—Truckee Legacy Trail.
