Walk down to the lake’s edge at Common’s Beach and Tahoe City Marina, or rent a boat or fishing charter at the marina, which offers rentals year-round. TAKE CARE OF LAKE TAHOE

Small things help to preserve Lake Tahoe’s incredible water clarity. That’s the message TakeCareTahoe.org brings to young and old: With just a little effort, you can help take care of this national treasure. Everything you drop on the ground in the Tahoe Basin drains to the lake, including litter and cigarette butts. Food litter can attract bears. Everything your dog drops on the ground also ends up in the lake, so please clean up after your pet. And skip the bottled water—Tahoe has some of America’s best tasting water, Tahoe tap!

FEATURES | HISTORY

A Rich History of Winter Sports Humans have been exploring the Tahoe region during winter for hundreds of years. Washoe and Paiute Native American tribes camped, fished and hunted along the lakeshore during summers but moved to lower elevation camps in Northern Nevada in fall. However, young hunters in the tribes reportedly chased game in the mountains throughout the winter, buoyed over the snowpack by crude snowshoes. When the first Scandinavian “49er” gold miners arrived in the Sierra mountains in the mid-1800s, they began carving tree branches into long planks, lashing them to their boots, then riding straight down the snowy slopes. Other miners labeled the contraptions “Norwegian snowshoes,” but they were skis alright: 10 to 14 foot “long boards,” their bottoms lathered for speed with a secret concoction called “dope” and steered with the help of one long pole. Soon miners from Donner Summit and camps to the north were staging the first organized ski races in America. Over the next few decades, long board races became huge events, featuring fierce competition, betting and drinking but reportedly, no fighting. With the wealth born of nearby gold and silver strikes, North Lake Tahoe quickly became a famous summer resort for the newly rich of the West. However, the hotels of the region board10 WINTER 2019/SPRING 2020 | North Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide

ed up their windows and doors every winter. Then in 1926, the most luxurious hotel in the region, Tahoe Tavern, decided to stay open for a winter season. A surface lift, toboggan run and ski jump were built nearby, at present day Granlibakken resort, and in 1952 hosted the National Junior Ski Jumping Tournament. Sugar Bowl ski resort opened in 1939 with the first chairlift in California. In 1953, the resort constructed America’s second gondola. Walt Disney was an early investor and Hollywood elite like Charlie Chaplin and Errol Flynn cozied up to the bar in its historic lodge. Opening in 1948, Squaw Valley won an audacious bid to host the 1960 Winter Games, the first Olympics to be televised live. Squaw dazzled the world with gorgeous scenery and thrilling action, including the original “Miracle on Ice” win by the U.S. Men Hockey Team over the Soviets. The Squaw Olympics are often sighted as launching the modern ski industry and, along with the opening of Interstate Highway 80 over Donner Summit in 1957, sparked the creation of the other major Tahoe ski resorts we enjoy today. Explore these earlier days at the Olympic Museum atop Squaw’s aerial tram, Tahoe City’s Gatekeepers Museum, or the Western Ski Sports Museum adjacent to Boreal Resort.

There is a rich ski history here, and whatever your skill level or choice of adventure, you can find it in Noth Lake Tahoe. See the chart on page 22 to compare resort offerings and facts.

BOREAL MOUNTAIN RESORT

High atop Donner Summit, Boreal is the perfect park riding resort, with six parks and a half-pipe. Encompassing 380 acres, Boreal offers night riding, with the lifts spinning from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Woodward Tahoe, an action-sport training facility with indoor trampolines, foam pits and skate parks, sits just beside the lodge. 530.426.3663, rideboreal.com

ALPINE MEADOWS

Spread over 2,400 acres, including seven spectacular open bowls, Alpine Meadows is a laid-back locals favorite. Alpine has plenty of varied terrain for beginners and experts alike. Treeline Cirque is a brand new chairlift that zips from the base area to high ridge in just five minutes. It’s mid-station accesses some of Alpine’s best easy-intermediate terrain. Kids as young as 3 can learn to ride at the ski school, and the resort is home to Achieve Tahoe, offering winter sports instruction for people with disabilities. Sugar Bowl is so named for the deep white snow that fills the valleys below four peaks atop Donner Summit. The resort dates back to 1939 and is imbued with history: Walt Disney was an early founder, Hollywood elite such as Greta Garbo skied its slopes, and it hosted one of the country’s most prestigious ski races. The Lodge at Sugar Bowl still retains an old-time, Old World charm. Known for their bloody marys, the modern Judah Lodge is the perfect place to start the day. On the slopes are four terrain parks and plenty of both groomers and glades. 530.426.9000, sugarbowl.com TAHOE DONNER

With 40 percent beginner terrain and 60 percent intermediate over 120 acres, Tahoe Donner Downhill is a great place for young families and newcomers to the sport. The Learn to Ski program teaches children as young as 3-years-old how to ski. West Shore The peaks of the Sierra Crest tower over Tahoe’s azure waters on this beautiful and serene stretch of shoreline. West Shore includes the small communities of Sunnyside, Homewood, Tahoma and Meeks Bay. If you’re looking for the heart of winter activity this season, look no further than Homewood Mountain Resort, located right off Highway 89. Only 280 steps from lift to lake, Homewood offers stunning views of beautiful Lake Tahoe. Featuring 8 lifts and 67 runs, Homewood averages about 450 inches of snow per season and spans over 1,260 acres. Sugar Pine State Park grooms cross-country ski trails that were used in the 1960 Winter Olympics. Snowshoers can head through the woods to the lakeshore or admire the Ehrman Mansion. Full-moon ski and snowshoe hikes are scheduled throughout winter. Excellent restaurant choices surround the drive from Tahoe City south to Tahoma. Cute cottage resorts and rustic lodges are sheltered under the tall trees. This is a spot to rediscover the magic of a family ski vacation or appreciate the beauty of a Sierra winter. Stop by Sunnyside or West Shore Cafe and enjoy a lakeside après as you take in the spectacular Tahoe view.

Kings Beach/Tahoe Vista The resort communities of Kings Beach and Tahoe Vista are close to multiple ski resorts and a myriad of winter activities. Northstar California, Diamond Peak, Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley ski areas are all less than a half-hour away. The North Tahoe Regional Park offers cross-country ski trails, snowmobile trails and wide snow-play areas. Snowmobile tours are offered nearby on Brockway Summit on Highway 267. Lodging options abound along the lakeshore, with a wide variety of restaurants and bars offering everything from refined to takeout to authentic Mexican cuisine. Shopping includes eclectic boutiques, gift shops, ski shops and more. Check out Tahoe Flow Arts Studio for a variety of performance art classes. This is Tahoe’s “Banana Belt,” where the winter sun is strong enough to melt the snow along the lakeshore and dry out the wide beaches that are so popular in summer. On particularly warm and calm winter days, you might even spy paddleboarders floating over Lake Tahoe’s blue, reflective surface. Take a walk along the lakeshore, or watch an alpenglow sunset light up the clouds over the crest of the Sierra Nevada.

Incline Village/Crystal Bay At one time, Incline Village stood at the site of the Comstock era’s Great Incline Railway. Today, the town boasts a craft brewery and tap room, unique restaurants and spectacular estates along Lakeshore Boulevard. Incline also has a handful of shops and thrift stores, with most located along Highway 28. Diamond Peak Ski Resort is a popular family spot that features some of the best views in the ski world. With powerful snowmaking, these runs offer top-to-bottom snow quality throughout the long winter. To experience the ecosystem of Lake Tahoe, head to the U.C. Davis Tahoe Environmental Science Center. Located in the Sierra Nevada College campus, the center features an award-winning 3D movie and interactive exhibits produced by UC Davis researchers, who are world experts in their field. Start or end your day at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Spa and Casino. Here, Lone Eagle Grille offers dining experiences located directly on the Lakeshore. Straddling the California/Nevada border, Crystal Bay has gaming action at three casinos including the Tahoe Biltmore, and the Crystal Bay Club, which regularly features well-known music acts on its two stages.

Olympic Valley Home to the renowned Squaw Valley ski resort and the 1960 Winter Olympics, this is one of the most scenic winter destinations in America. The Village at Squaw Valley is hopping with action, full of restaurants, bars and shops. Sit next to a fire pit in the central square and sip hot drinks while falling snowflakes settle on your nose. There is plentiful lodging in the Village, at nearby hotels and across the valley at the Resort at Squaw Creek. It adds up to a huge selection of “ski-in, ski-out” accommodations. When it’s time to dine, a full range of options awaits, from gourmet to pub-style. Those who don’t snowboard or ski can still climb the mountain via tram, which takes riders of all ages up the 2,000 vertical feet to High Camp. While you’re there, combine history with scenery and visit the Olympic Museum and Observation Deck. A popular snow-play area - with mini snowmobiles - is across the parking lot from the Village. Here you’ll also find cross-country ski trails that wind through the beautiful, wide meadow and up into the forest.

Donner Summit Site of a historic railroad engineering feat, this is a scenic land of deep snow, huge granite cliffs and towering mountains. In the 1860s, hundreds of workers tunneled through solid rock here to crest the mighty Sierra Nevada Range, the most formidable obstacle to the building of the first Intercontinental railway. Highway 40 now roughly follows the route that earlier settlers used to reach California. The road is kept open in winter and has inspiring views of Donner Lake and the now-abandoned train tunnels over the summit. Sugar Bowl Ski resort is mid-way along Highway 40, perched atop the Sierra Crest, with two entrances and base lodges. Opening in 1939, the resort has a rich history and records some of the deepest annual snowpack in the U.S. Sugar Bowl also connects with Royal Gorge, the nation’s largest cross-country ski resort, which has two additional base areas near the small hamlet of Soda Springs. Three other downhill ski areas are nearby—Donner Ski Ranch, Soda Springs and Boreal Mountain Resort—the latter home to Woodward Tahoe’s indoor ramps and jump pits. To learn more about this area’s fascinating history, visit the Emigrant Trail Museum at Donner Memorial State Park, located at the east end of Donner Lake.

COMMUNITY PROFILES

The historic Old West town of Truckee is less than 15 miles from North Lake Tahoe. Its downtown buildings are wonderfully preserved and house a wide variety of modern boutiques, restaurants, watering holes, galleries and shops. Truckee and its environs played a seminal role in the opening of the American West, first as a stop on the route pioneers took to California, then as the site of the most difficult phase of track-laying of the first Intercontinental Railroad. It was once a notorious frontier town, the center of the ice industry and, more than 100 years ago, the site of one of the West’s first winter mountain resorts. Ten downhill or cross-country ski resorts are now close by. The town has an outdoor ice rink and opened a new aquatics center in 2016. Also new is the Donner Memorial State Park Visitor Center, with exhibits on the difficult journey faced by those heading west to California. Old Highway 40 traces part of the route taken by those pioneers and now serves as the “shortcut” to Sugar Bowl ski resort (which plows the road clear throughout winter). This spectacular drive has been featured in numerous TV commercials and Hollywood movies, including, most recently, “Her.”
