WELCOME

Winter Perfection

Welcome to one of the world’s great winter destinations: North Lake Tahoe. Find scenic beauty, endless outdoor recreation, fine dining and exciting events. Few resort regions can match this slice of the Sierra Nevada mountains during snow season. America’s largest concentration of ski resorts (11 Alpine and five cross-country areas), site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, birthplace of the half-pipe and freeride movement—North Lake Tahoe is on the bucket list of every serious skier and snowboarder. Downhill skiing not your style? Try snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling, sledding and snow biking. Or head out onto Lake Tahoe on a fishing charter or arctic paddle! For fun out of the sun and snow, indoor options include shopping, gaming, museums and more than 100 restaurants and bars! The signature impression for most visitors to this area is the stunning natural beauty of Lake Tahoe, a global treasure. Through environmental measures put in place by national, state and local agencies, Tahoe’s famously blue waters remain incredibly clear, especially in the winter. 6 WINTER 2017/SPRING 2018 | North Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide

The range of blue-to-turquoise water, contrasted against the surrounding snow-covered peaks, makes these shores among the most photographed places on earth. Despite the failed attempt by famed naturalist John Muir to declare Lake Tahoe a national park, much of the land in North Tahoe is protected and open for your recreation enjoyment in the form of U.S. Forest Service, Nevada and California state parks, and municipal and federal public lands. Prefer to experience all the beauty while ripping down the side of a mountain? Where to start? Squaw Valley/ Alpine Meadows and Northstar California are magnets for many skiers and snowboarders, but the region offers such a diverse range of downhill and cross-country experiences that a Tahoe vacation can resemble a tour of the Alps—ski a different world-class resort every day of the week! North Tahoe certainly has the slopes to challenge worldclass talent, but the variety of terrain at local resorts makes these winter playlands accessible to everyone, from tots to first-timers to daredevils. Bring the whole family! As Mr. Muir said, “The mountains are calling.”

TAKE CARE OF LAKE TAHOE

Waterman’s Landing at Patton Beach in Carnelian Bay has a shoreline of smooth rocks just steps from the parking area. Dogs are welcome, and it’s a great place for arctic paddling. Because the stretch of sand at Kings Beach faces almost directly south, the winter sun and occasional waves will often leave a section of beach free of snow. Stop by the Lone Eagle Grille at Incline Village’s Hyatt Regency and venture away from the fireplace in the bar to its sandy slice of lakeshore heaven.

Small things help to preserve Lake Tahoe’s incredible water clarity. That’s the message TakeCareTahoe.org brings to young and old: With just a little effort, you can help take care of this national treasure. Everything you drop on the ground in the Tahoe Basin drains to the lake, including litter and cigarette butts. Food litter can attract bears. Everything your dog drops on the ground also ends up in the lake, so please clean up after your pet. And skip the bottled water—Tahoe has some of America’s best tasting water, Tahoe tap!

Kids ‘N’ Snow

North Lake Tahoe is a winter wonderland for children, just waiting to be explored—whether it’s the simple pleasures of building snowmen and snow forts in the forest, or the fun of tubing hills, skating rinks and adventure zones. Tahoe Winter Sports Park is conveniently located just behind Tahoe City with skating rink, toddler-friendly sledding/tubing hill, cross-country and snowshoe trails/rentals, plus restaurant and bar. Families also congregate for public land sledding just south of Tahoe City off Highway 89 and at North Tahoe Regional park, above Tahoe Vista. Playgrounds in Tahoe City and Kings Beach are popular snow play zones. For the snow-shoe- or cross-country skiequipped families, Sugar Pine Point State Park is a favorite place to explore. There are both forest and lakeside “trails” as well as the 1960 Winter Olympics cross-country trails, which are often groomed during winter. SKI RESORTS | FEATURES

Touring North Lake Tahoe’s Downhill Resorts By Alison Bender Where is the best spot for you and your family and friends to ski, ride or slide? The North Tahoe region offers an abundance of choices, from huge, world-class resorts to small, learn-to-ski-and-ride areas. There is a rich ski history here, and whatever your skill level or choice of adventure, you can find it here. See the chart on page 24 to compare resort statistics and facts. SQUAW VALLEY

The Olympic torch still burns at Squaw Valley, the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. With 3,600 skiable acres and more than 170 trails, Squaw is North Tahoe’s biggest resort. Advanced riders flock to KT-22, where athletes like Julia Mancuso, Jonny Moseley and other ski stars honed their skills. There are plenty of intermediate runs here, plus beginner and teaching areas on both the upper and lower mountain. Have a hearty breakfast in the Village at Squaw Valley before hitting the slopes or for an après-ski drink or bite. Night skiing is also available during parts of the season. The aerial tram takes guests directly to an 8,200-foot elevation lodge. Fully interchangeable tickets with Alpine Meadows—and the free Squaw Alpine Express—allow guests to ride two resorts on the same day. 1.800.403.0206, squawalpine.com

ALPINE MEADOWS

Spread over 2,400 acres, including seven spectacular open bowls, Alpine Meadows is more laid-back—and sometimes less crowded—than its sister resort, Squaw Valley. Alpine has plenty of varied terrain for beginners and experts alike. The Lakeview Chair offers fantastic views of Lake Tahoe. Two terrain parks and a half-pipe cater to the freeride crew. Kids as young as 3 can learn to ride at the resort’s ski school, and the resort is the home of the Disabled Sports USA Far West program. The Chalet, Alpine’s midmountain Bavarianstyle beer garden, is a perfect stop for a beer and a bite, or, in the spring, try the Ice Bar on the resort’s backside. 1.800.403.0206, squawalpine.com NORTHSTAR CALIFORNIA

Among the pine-dotted glades and spread across 3,170 acres and 97 trails, Northstar California is one of North Tahoe’s most popular resorts. Eight terrain parks are scattered around the mountain. Low snow is not a problem, as most of the resort’s runs are serviced by snowmaking technology. Start the day in Village at Northstar with coffee and rentals, or dine or end the day there with ice skating, s’mores and cocktails by the fire pits. 1.800.466.6784, northstarcalifornia.com www.GoTahoeNorth.com | WINTER 2017/SPRING 2018 21

SUGAR BOWL

DIAMOND PEAK

Sugar Bowl is so named for the deep white snow that fills the valleys below four peaks atop Donner Summit. The resort dates to 1939 and is imbued with history: Walt Disney was an early founder, Hollywood elite like Greta Garbo skied its slopes, and it hosted one of the country’s most prestigious ski races. The Lodge at Sugar Bowl still retains an old-time, Old World charm. The modern Judah Lodge is the perfect place to start the day. On the slopes are four terrain parks and plenty of both groomers and glades. 530.426.9000, sugarbowl.com

Located in Incline Village, Diamond Peak boasts some of the area’s best scenery over its 655 skiable acres. This family-friendly resorts offers a great ski school, and kids 6 and younger ski free (as do seniors 80-plus). The midmountain Snowflake Lodge is a perfect spot for a hot-chocolate break, and the 21-and-over crowd can take advantage of the Last Tracks events, held Saturdays February through April, which includes wine or beer tastings and appetizers followed by a nice cruise down a freshly groomed intermediate slope. 775.832.1177, diamondpeak.com

HOMEWOOD MOUNTAIN RESORT

MT. ROSE SKI TAHOE

Located on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe, Homewood offers some of the most beautiful views of the lake; on some runs, it feels like you could ski straight into the water. Homewood averages about 450 inches of snow over 1,260 acres, to include four terrain parks. The tree skiing here is phenomenal; for another type of excursion, try the Homewood Snowcat Adventure, which transports groups of up to 10 skiers and riders up Ellis Peak—above the traditional ski area boundary—to a variety of guided terrain and back down to the resort. Food and drinks can be found at the North base, just off Highway 89, or take in the scenery at the Big Blue View Bar, located midmountain, weather permitting. 530.525.2992, skihomewood.com

Lake Tahoe’s highest elevation base resort, Mt. Rose is also the closest to Reno. The popular Rosebuds program teaches skiing to tykes 4 to 10 and snowboarding to kids 7 to 10, though beginner packages are available for all ages. There are plenty of easy cruising runs for intermediate skiers; for expert riders, try the Chutes, which feature steep, 40- to 55-degree slopes and 1,000 vertical feet. Be sure to stop by Winters Creek Lodge on the Slide side for panoramic views of the Washoe Valley. Check online for daily specials like Two ‘fer Tuesdays and Ladies Day Thursdays throughout the season. 1.800.754.7673, skirose.com TAHOE DONNER

West Shore The peaks of the Sierra Crest tower over Tahoe’s azure waters on this beautiful and serene stretch of shoreline. West Shore includes the small communities of Sunnyside, Homewood, Tahoma and Meeks Bay. If you’re looking for the heart of winter activity this season, look no further than Homewood Mountain Resort, located right off of Highway 89. Homewood remains one of Tahoe’s classic family-friendly resorts with an epic view and peak-to-shore experience. The 1,260-acre mountain offers unobstructed views of Lake Tahoe and features eight lifts and 64 runs. Sugar Pine Point State Park grooms cross-country ski trails that were used in the 1960 Winter Olympics. Snowshoers can head through the woods to the lakeshore there or admire the Ehrman Mansion. Full-moon ski and snowshoe hikes are scheduled throughout the winter. Excellent restaurant choices dot the drive from Tahoe City south to Tahoma. Cute cottage resorts and rustic lodges are sheltered under the tall trees. This is a spot to rediscover the magic of a family ski vacation or appreciate the beauty of a Sierra winter. Stop in at the West Shore Cafe for complimentary s’mores from 4 to 4:30 p.m.

Kings Beach/Tahoe Vista The resort communities of Kings Beach and Tahoe Vista are close to multiple ski resorts and a myriad of winter activities. Northstar California, Diamond Peak, Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley ski areas are all less than a half-hour away. The North Tahoe Regional Park offers cross-country ski trails, snowmobile trails and wide snow-play areas. Snowmobile tours are offered nearby on Brockway Summit on Highway 267. Lodging options abound along the lakeshore or nearby. The wide variety of restaurants and bars offers everything from refined to takeout to authentic Mexican cuisine. Shopping includes eclectic boutiques, gift shops, ski shops and more. Take your chance at gambling or enjoy nightclubs at nearby Crystal Bay casinos. This is Tahoe’s “Banana Belt,” where the winter sun is strong enough to melt the snow along the lakeshore and dry out the wide beaches that are so popular in summer. On particularly warm and calm winter days, you might even spy paddleboarders floating over Lake Tahoe’s blue, reflective surface. Take a walk along the lakeshore, or watch a sunset light up the clouds over the crest of the Sierra Nevada.

Olympic Valley Home to the renowned Squaw Valley ski resort and the 1960 Winter Olympics, this is one of the most scenic winter destinations in America. The Village at Squaw Valley is hopping with action, full of restaurants, bars and shops. Sit next to a fire pit in the central square and sip hot drinks while falling snowflakes settle on your nose. There is plentiful lodging in the Village, at nearby hotels and across the valley at the Resort at Squaw Creek. It adds up to a huge selection of “ski-in, ski-out” accommodations. When it’s time to dine, a full range of options awaits, from gourmet to pub-style. Those who don’t snowboard or ski can still climb the mountain via tram, which takes riders of all ages up the 2,000 vertical feet to High Camp. An Olympic-size ice rink is perched atop the peak, with extraordinary views of Lake Tahoe and surrounding peaks. A popular snow-play area—with mini-snowmobiles—is across the parking lot from the Village. Sled-dog and horse-drawn sleigh rides leave from Squaw Creek. Here you’ll also find cross-country ski trails that wind through the beautiful, wide meadow and up into the forests.

Incline Village/Crystal Bay At one time, Incline Village stood at the site of the Comstock era’s Great Incline Railway. Today, the town boasts galleries, restaurants and spectacular estates along Lakeshore Boulevard. Incline has a handful of malls, most located along Highway 28, adding up to a wide variety of dining and shopping. Diamond Peak Ski Resort is just up the mountain from Incline Village— a popular family spot that also features some of the best views in the ski world. With powerful snowmaking capacity, these runs offer top-tobottom snow quality throughout the long winter season. To experience cutting-edge science, head to the Tahoe Science Center. Located on the private Sierra Nevada College campus, the center has 3-D movies and interactive exhibits produced by UC Davis researchers who are the world experts in their fields. Start or end your day at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Spa and Casino. Its Lone Eagle Grille is located directly on the lakeshore and offers outstanding views. Truckee The historic Old West town of Truckee is less than 15 miles from North Lake Tahoe. Its downtown buildings are wonderfully preserved and house a wide variety of modern boutiques, restaurants, watering holes, galleries and shops. Truckee and its environs played a seminal role in the opening of the American West, first as a stop on the route pioneers took to California, then as the site of the most difficult phase of track-laying of the first Intercontinental Railroad. It was once a notorious frontier town, the center of the ice industry and, more than 100 years ago, the site of one of the West’s first winter mountain resorts. Ten downhill or cross-country ski resorts are now close by. The town has an outdoor ice rink and opened a new aquatics center in 2016. Also new is the Donner Memorial State Park Visitor Center, with exhibits on the difficult journey faced by those heading west to California. Old Highway 40 traces part of the route taken by those pioneers and now serves as the “shortcut” to Sugar Bowl ski resort (which plows the road clear throughout winter). This spectacular drive has been featured in numerous TV commercials and Hollywood movies, including, most recently, “Her.”
