Welcome to North Lake Tahoe — a winter wonderland that will fill you with magical, memorable moments that will last for years to come. This area boasts the largest concentration of Alpine and Nordic ski areas in the world. With 11 Alpine resorts and six Nordic ski areas, you can literally ski for three weeks and not ski the same place twice! Of course, you might want to take a few days to rest your body and to experience something besides skiing. For the very adventurous, you can see the snow-capped peaks of the Pacific Crest from a paddleboard, kayak or fishing charter. Be sure to “Touch the Lake” while you are here during the winter for museums, restaurants and activities along the shores of the largest, clearest Alpine lake in North America. At the end of an active day of snow play or lake play, snuggle up around a hot drink and enjoy the culinary talents of renowned Lake Tahoe chefs, pairing your meals with our famous California wines. Or schedule a massage to loosen up sore muscles at one of the many spas in the region. Check out our website at www.gotahoenorth.com on your favorite device or visit our friendly staff at the North Lake Tahoe Visitor Center at the “wye” in Tahoe City. We’d love to help you create and enjoy a dream winter visit!

Welcome
So Much to Ski and Do
Few places on earth combine world-class skiing and riding, fine dining and awe-inspiring scenery like North Lake Tahoe—blessed with distinct, charming towns and a cornucopia of winter activities and events. Where to start? Are you here to ski or ride? Looking for huge mountains and challenging terrain, or comfortable cruising on long, smooth trails? It’s all here—and everything in between. On page 22 of this guide you’ll find summaries and statistics of a dozen downhill resorts. Looking for activities beyond the slopes? Turn to pages 15-20 for a myriad of non-skiing options, including the low-hassle, lowimpact fun of snowshoeing—an ancient pursuit transformed by modern, light equipment. You don’t have to break a sweat to enjoy winter here. Stroll among the shops and dining options along the lakefront or ones surrounded by mountain peaks. Reserve a cozy, scenic table for a memorable meal and evening. Information on restaurants, shops, spas and much more is found throughout the Community pages and Directory section of this guide. Stunning scenery is certainly one of the most spectacular aspects of a winter visit to North Tahoe. If time allows, make sure to explore other towns or ski villages. There’s magic in a North Lake Tahoe winter, whether experienced under falling snowflakes or in the sparkling brilliance of a crisp, sunny day. 6 WINTER 2016/SPRING 2017 | North Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide

Tahoe Updates
• Tahoe City’s Winter Sports Park adds ice-skating to its offerings with an outdoor skating rink, adjacent to the clubhouse restaurant and bar. Open from late November through March, weather permitting, the rink is 50 feet wide and 80 feet long, so there is plenty of room for everyone, from the experienced skater to the novice. Skates are available for rent, as are supports for beginners, making the learning experience all that more fun. The sports park’s other attractions include cross-country skiing, sledding and snowshoeing. • Renowned Chef Douglas Dale of Wolfdale’s Cuisine Unique in Tahoe City has released his first cookbook and memoir. An innovator in Asianfusion cuisine, Dale once worked as a private chef for John Lennon and Yoko Ono prior to starting his now-38-year-old restaurant and bar. • World Cup skiing returns to Squaw Valley, March 9-12. For the first time in 19 years, Olympians will race on the same legendary runs used in the 1960 Winter Olympics. • Diamond Peak Ski Resort celebrates its 50th anniversary with events all season long and is offering two- to seven-day, fully transferable Flex Passes. • The California Ski Industry Association, an early leader in developing sustainable practices, announced that resorts are on-track to meet the ambitious goals of the California Global Warming Solutions Act, reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. 8 WINTER 2016/SPRING 2017 | North Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide

Waterman’s Landing at Patton Beach in Carnelian Bay has a shoreline of smooth rocks just steps from the parking area. Dogs are welcome, and it’s a great place for arctic paddling. Because the stretch of sand at Kings Beach faces almost directly south, the winter sun and occasional waves will often leave a stretch of beach free of snow. Snowshoeing Fun By Alison Bender As winter snows fall upon this area’s expansive trail system, it’s time to swap hiking boots for snowshoes. Snowshoeing is a great way to explore the winter landscape; it’s easy to find routes for all ability levels. The north Lake Tahoe region features thousands of miles of snowshoe trails, perfect for those who want to escape to the serenity of a secluded forested trail, or want smooth groomed routes followed by a mug of hot chocolate. An easy first stop for beginners is Tahoe Cross-Country just outside Tahoe City, a full-service resort with rentals and designated snowshoe trails. Also featuring on-mountain rentals, trails and warming huts are Royal gorge Cross-Country, northstar Cross Country Telemark & Snowshoe Center, Resort at Squaw Creek nordic Center and Tahoe City winter Sports Park. For special nighttime adventure, join the Tahoe Adventure Company for one of its full-moon snowshoe tours.

one of the bonuses of snowshoeing is that, unlike most winter sports, it’s easy to learn and requires relatively little investment. gear is available to buy or rent at a number of area equipment shops (try one of Tahoe Dave’s four north Tahoe locations), and while there are several styles—depending on terrain, conditions or athletic ability—it’s not hard to find a good fit.

Touring North Lake Tahoe’s Downhill Resorts By Alison Bender
Squaw ValleY
The Olympic torch still burns at Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. With 3,600 skiable acres and more than 170 trails, Squaw Valley is North Tahoe’s biggest resort; it shares a lift with neighbor Alpine Meadows, making it one of the nation’s largest ski lift systems. Advanced riders flock to KT-22 chairlift, where athletes like Julia Mancuso and Jonny Moseley can be found testing their skills. There are multiple terrain parks and half-pipes on the upper mountain, plentiful beginner and intermediate terrain and a fantastic ski school. Stop by the Village at Squaw Valley for a hearty breakfast before hitting the slopes or for an après-ski drink or snack; or stick around for limited night skiing. The tram takes guests directly to High Camp and its day lodge. The fully interchangeable tickets—and free Squaw Alpine Express shuttle—allow guests to ride at two exceptional resorts on the same day. 1.800.403.0206, squawalpine.com 22 WINTER 2016/SPRING 2017 | North Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide
Alpine Meadows
Spread over 2,400 acres, including seven spectacular open bowls, Alpine Meadows is more laidback—and generally less crowded—than its sister resort, Squaw Valley. Not to worry; Alpine has plenty of varied terrain for beginners, intermediates and experts alike. Summit and Lakeview chairlifts offer fantastic views of Lake Tahoe. Three terrain parks and a half pipe dot the slopes. Kids as young as 3 can learn to ride at the ski school, and the resort is the home of the Achieve Tahoe program. The Chalet is a perfect stop for a beer and a bite. Or in the spring, try the Ice Bar on the resort’s back side. 1.800.403.0206, squawalpine.com Northstar California
Spread across 3,170 acres and crisscrossed by 97 trails, Northstar California is one of North Tahoe’s most popular resorts. The Village at Northstar is a great place to start the day with breakfast, gear and rentals; or to end it with ice– skating then relaxing by a fire pit with s’mores and cocktails. Seven terrain parks are scattered around the mountain, and guests may see Olympic gold medalist David Wise of Reno practicing his moves in the half pipe. Low snow levels are not a problem, as half the mountain is serviced by snowmaking

FEATURES | Ski Resorts
Sugar Bowl
Sugar Bowl is so named because of the deep, glittering snow that fills the bowl between its four peaks high atop Donner Summit. This resort, which dates to 1939, is imbued with history: Walt Disney was an early investor, Hollywood elite like Errol Flynn and Greta Garbo skied its slopes and it hosted one of the country’s most prestigious ski races, the Silver Belt. The Lodge at Sugar Bowl retains an Old World charm and offers great food and drinks. Modern Judah Lodge, the entry point for most visitors to Sugar Bowl, offers a ski school and children’s program. There are three terrain parks as well as plenty of groomers and glades. Be on the lookout for resort ambassador and world championship medalist Daron Rahlves. Those who want to explore beyond the ropes can access the backcountry via the resort’s open boundaries. 530.426.9000, sugarbowl.com Homewood Mountain Resort
Located on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe, Homewood offers some of the most beautiful views of the lake. It boasts 64 runs, 2,010 acres, including six terrain parks, and averages about 450 inches of annual snowfall. Beginner terrain is located next to the main North Lodge and parking lot. Tree skiing here is phenomenal, or stick to the wide groomed runs and enjoy the view. Homewood Snowcat Adventure transports groups of up to 10 skiers and riders up Ellis Peak—above the traditional ski area boundary—to enjoy a variety of guided terrain before heading back down to the resort. Food and drinks can be found in both the North and South lodges, or take a break and enjoy the scenery (weather permitting) from the Big Blue View Bar located mid-mountain. 530.525.2992, skihomewood.com 24 WINTER 2016/SPRING 2017 | North Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide
Diamond Peak
Located in Incline Village, Diamond Peak boasts some of the area’s best scenery among its 655 skiable acres. This family-friendly resort offers a great ski school, and kids 6 and younger ski free (as do seniors 80-plus). The mid-mountain Snowflake Lodge is a perfect spot for a hot chocolate break, and the 21-and-over crowd can take advantage of the Last Tracks events—held Saturdays, February through April—which include wine or beer tastings and appetizers followed by a cruise down a freshly groomed intermediate slope. The resort has excellent snowmaking, and when the powder does fly, there’s terrific tree skiing for advanced riders. 775.832.1177, diamondpeak.com MT. Rose Ski Tahoe
Lake Tahoe’s highest elevation base resort, Mt. Rose is also the closest to Reno. There are plenty of easy cruising runs for intermediate skiers; for advanced riders, try the Chutes, which feature steep, 40- to 55-degree, expert-only terrain across eight lines and 1,000 vertical feet. Be sure to stop by Winters Creek Lodge and the Slide side for panoramic views of the Washoe Valley. For families, the popular Rosebuds program teaches skiing to tykes 4 to 10 and snowboarding to kids 7 to 10, though beginner packages are available for all ages. Also check online for daily specials like Two ‘fer Tuesdays and Ladies Day Thursdays throughout the season. 1.800.754.7673, skirose.com Tahoe Donner
With 40 percent beginner terrain and 60 percent intermediate over 120 acres, Tahoe Donner Downhill is a great place for families and those who are new to skiing. The Learn to Ski program teaches children as young as 3, while the new, 700-square-foot yurt with its adjoining sundeck is a perfect spot to warm up before and after lessons. The resort has also recently installed a new snowmaking system around

Cross-Country ski | FEATURES

A Sport for the Ages the venerable pursuit of cross-country skiing has been revolutionized by “skate-skiing,” a relatively new technique that has attracted new generations of enthusiastic participants. With equipment that is much lighter than downhill gear, much faster than traditional striding skis, skate-skiing is both great exercise and fun for all ages. Comfortable skate boots are attached by hinge systems to the skis at two points—toe and mid-arch—giving a greater feel of control. novices learn the simple techniques for climbing hills or cruising the flats. north tahoe is an epicenter for the sport, with the country’s largest resort, royal Gorge, located on Donner summit. tahoe Cross-Country has a scenic network of groomed trails and manages the striding and skating loops at tahoe City Winter sports Park. northstar, resort at squaw Creek and tahoe Donner all have excellent trail systems and facilities. Look to the chart on the facing page for the details—then go for a snow-skate!

Tahoe City This charming and historic town at the mouth of the Truckee River has numerous shops, restaurants and recreational options, all within easy walking distance of each other. Boutiques and shops dot Tahoe City’s main street and the enclosed Boatworks Mall, located above the marina. There is also a beautiful park here, which includes the Tahoe City dam and the Gatekeeper’s Museum, with its excellent Native American basket collection. Nearby, at the intersection of Highways 89 and 28, is the North Lake Tahoe Visitor Center, whose knowledgeable staff are ready to answer any questions about this region. With interactive maps and entertaining and informative displays, this is a must stop for visitors to the area. The Tahoe City Golf Course, just off the main street, transforms in snow season into the Winter Sports Park. A new ice rink, multi-loop cross-country ski track (also enjoyed by snowshoers) and sled hill are groomed regularly, and snow-play rentals are available. The Art Haus and Cinema in the Cobblestone Center features live music, eclectic films and film festivals. Visit the Sierra Ski Museum, upstairs in Boatworks Mall, for exhibits on area history and the 1960 Winter Olympics. The Tahoe Maritime Museum opened at its new Tahoe City location in spring 2016.

West Shore The peaks of the Sierra Crest tower over Tahoe’s azure waters on this beautiful and serene stretch of shoreline. West Shore includes the small communities of Sunnyside, Homewood, Tahoma and Meeks Bay. The hub of winter activity is Homewood Mountain Resort, with two convenient base facilities right off the road. Groups of up to 10 advanced level skiers and riders can enjoy snowcat-accessed backcountry skiing and riding with guided access to over 750 acres. For those skiers and snowboarders not comfortable on the upper mountain (at least not yet), there is a wide area for beginners and snow-play next to the parking lot and North Lodge. Sugar Pine Point State Park grooms cross-country ski trails that were used in the 1960 Winter Olympics. Snowshoers can head through the woods to the lakeshore there or admire the Ehrman Mansion. Fullmoon ski and snowshoe hikes are scheduled throughout the winter. Excellent restaurant choices dot the drive from Tahoe City south to Tahoma. Cute cottage resorts and rustic lodges are sheltered under the tall trees. This is a spot to rediscover the magic of a family ski vacation, or appreciate the beauty of a Sierra winter. Stop in at the West Shore Cafe for complimentary s’mores from 4 to 4:30 p.m.

Kings Beach/Tahoe Vista The resort communities of Kings Beach and Tahoe Vista are close to multiple ski resorts and a myriad of winter activities. Northstar California, Diamond Peak, Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley ski areas are all less than a half-hour away. The North Tahoe Regional Park offers cross-country ski trails, snowmobile trails and wide snow-play areas. Snowmobile tours are offered nearby on Brockway Summit on Highway 267. Lodging options abound along the lakeshore or nearby. The wide variety of restaurants and bars includes refined to take-out to authentic Mexican cuisine. Shopping includes eclectic boutiques, gift shops, ski shops and more. Take your chance at gambling or enjoy nightclubs at nearby Crystal Bay casinos. This is Tahoe’s “Banana Belt” where the winter sun is sometimes strong enough to melt the snow along the lakeshore and dry out the wide beaches that are so popular in summer. On particularly warm and calm winter days, you might even spy paddleboarders floating over Lake Tahoe’s blue, reflective surface. Take a walk along the lakeshore, or watch a sunset light up the clouds over the crest of the Sierra Nevada.

Luxurious amenities, activities fit for the entire family and a highly acclaimed Ski and Snowboard School make Northstar California the perfect resort for families looking for relaxed sophistication. The Village at Northstar is at the heart of the resort, hosting numerous events year-round. Dining options include everything from high-end, locally sourced cuisine to kid favorites like pizza, pasta and gelato. A two-screen theater features comfortable seating and the latest movies. The town of Truckee and the Tahoe-Truckee Airport are just down the road—bringing guests additional activities in the historical logging town as well as unmatched ease and accessibility of travel for private-plane owners.

Olympic Valley Home to the renowned Squaw Valley ski resort and the 1960 Winter Olympics, this is one of the most scenic winter destinations in America. The Village at Squaw Valley is hopping with action, full of restaurants, bars and shops. Sit next to a firepit in the central square and sip hot drinks while falling snowflakes settle on your nose. There is plentiful lodging in the Village, at nearby hotels and across the valley at the Resort at Squaw Creek. It adds up to a huge selection of “ski-in, ski-out” accommodations. When it’s time to dine, a full range of options awaits, from gourmet to pub-style. Those who don’t snowboard or ski can still climb the mountain via tram, which takes riders of all ages up the 2,000 vertical feet to High Camp. An Olympic-size ice rink is perched atop the peak, with extraordinary views of Lake Tahoe and surrounding peaks. A popular snow-play area—with mini-snowmobiles—is across the parking lot from the Village. Sled-dog and horse-drawn sleigh rides leave from Squaw Creek. Here you’ll also find cross-country ski trails that wind through the beautiful, wide meadow and up into the forests.

Incline Village/Crystal Bay At one time, Incline Village stood at the site of the Comstock era’s Great Incline Railway. Today, the town boasts galleries, restaurants and spectacular estates along Lakeshore Boulevard. Incline has a handful of malls, most located along Highway 28, adding up to a wide variety of dining and shopping. Diamond Peak Ski Resort is just up the mountain from Incline Village— a popular family spot that also features some of the best views in the ski world. With powerful snowmaking capacity, these runs offer top-tobottom snow quality throughout the long winter season. To experience cutting-edge science, head to the Tahoe Science Center. Located on the private Sierra Nevada College campus, the center has 3-D movies and interactive exhibits produced by UC Davis researchers who are the world experts in their fields. Start or end your day at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Spa and Casino. Its Lone Eagle Grille is located directly on the lakeshore and offers outstanding views. Straddling the California/Nevada border, Crystal Bay has gaming action at three casinos, and the Crystal Bay Club regularly features well-known music acts on its two stages.

Truckee The historic Old West town of Truckee is less than 15 miles from North Lake Tahoe. Its downtown buildings are wonderfully preserved and house a wide variety of modern boutiques, restaurants, watering holes, galleries and shops. Truckee and its environs played a seminal role in the opening of the American West, first as a stop on the route pioneers took to California, then as the site of the most difficult phase of track-laying of the first Intercontinental Railroad. It was once a notorious frontier town, the center of the ice industry and, more than 100 years ago, the site of one of the West’s first winter mountain resorts. Ten downhill or cross-country ski resorts are now close by. The town has an outdoor ice rink and opened a new aquatics center in 2016. Also new is the Donner Memorial State Park Visitor Center, with exhibits on the difficult journey faced by those heading west to California. Old Highway 40 traces part of the route taken by those pioneers and now serves as the “short-cut” to Sugar Bowl ski resort (which plows the road clear throughout winter). This spectacular drive has been featured in numerous TV commercials and Hollywood movies, including most recently “Her.”
Serving, wine by the taste, glass and the bottle. Delicious wines and cheese from around the world plus, wine related gifts, all at great prices.
