The Temple of Venus on the grounds of the Domain of Chantilly (opposite page) and the view from the Latona Fountain at Versailles (above)
Castles and gardens are an integral part of the landscape of Paris and the greater Paris region. Often created by the French monarchs, they have always provided splendid backdrops for kings, queens, courtesans and plenty of intrigue, and today they remain great places to discover.

ersailles would become the seat of the French court and the government of France under Louis XIV and is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its 2300 rooms, 1944 windows covering 18,000 square metres and stunning grounds. The castle also served as a home to among others, Louis XV who made his own hot chocolate and marzipan in his private kitchen and Marie-Antoinette who enjoyed playing her harp, revived the glamorous balls, hosted parties and had a back to nature retreat built on the grounds.
The castle, which today houses the national archaeological museum, possesses a 13th century chapel built by Louis IX, known as Saint-Louis, and is regarded as a masterpiece of Rayonnant Gothic architecture. The château is currently devoting an exhibition, showing through to July 14th, to one of its illustrious royal residents, Henry II to mark the 500th anniversary of his birth. Entitled Henry II. The Renaissance at SaintGermain-en-Laye, the show explores the life and times of this king who was the son of Francis I, the husband of Catherine de’ Medici and was romantically involved with Diane de Poitiers.
Women played a major role in the life at the court of Versailles, and the recent restorations at Versailles, including that of the Grand Apartment of the Queen offer a glimpse into the life of three of the illustrious women who marked the history of the château, Marie Antoinette, Marie Leszczyńska, and Madame de Maintenon.
Located in one of the largest forests in the Paris region, is the Domain of Chantilly, home to the private apartments of the Duke and Duchess d’Aumale, the second largest collection of old paintings in France, the largest horse stables in Europe, which house the Museum of the Horse and one of the most prestigious libraries in the world. The grounds and gardens of the domain offer a journey into diversity with the 17th century Le Nôtre flower beds, the Anglo-Chinese garden and Hamlet of the 18th century and the 19th century English Garden.
The Grand Apartment of the Queen re-opened in April to the public after a vast three-year restoration. Composed of four rooms, it is one of the most spectacular spaces in the castle. Created for Queen Maria Theresa, the first wife of Louis XIV, it was also occupied by the queens Marie Leszczyńska, the wife of Louis XV and Marie-Antoinette, the wife of Louis XVI and still reflects the style of the three queens that occupied it. Princes and princesses of France were born, publically, in this room including the future Louis XV. Meanwhile, a dedicated exhibition in the Dauphine’s apartments, A Taste of Marie Leszczyńska, enables one to discover the tastes and lifestyle, through some 50 works and objects, of the queen and consort to Louis XV who would influence the décor of the castle. Another exhibition is running through to July 21st, of some 60 works tracing the life of the major court figure and the second and morganatic wife of Louis XIV Madame de Maintenon, is being held in the apartments where she resided. And while Louis XIV is most closely associated with Versailles, he was born in another royal residence just west of Paris in the castle of SaintGermain-en-Laye in 1638 and would spend most of the first years of his reign there. It has been a royal residence since the 12th century when Louis the Fat took up residence there although Francis I was behind the current vast structure, which dates from the 16th century.
A visit to the domain provides a glimpse into the gracious lifestyle of the 19th century, but offers a look into the 17th and 18th centuries as well. The private apartments of the Duke and Duchess d’Aumale have just undergone a major two-year restoration and were re-opened to the public in February. Fashioned between 1845 and 1847, these eight rooms that witnessed the splendour of the July Monarchy of Louis Philippe I, have been returned to their full lustre with the restoration and conservation of the paintings, gilded bronzes, furnishings and textiles. The private apartments are accessible for guided visits only. Meanwhile the Domain of Chantilly is presenting an exhibition through to October 6th in its Jeu de Paume entitled The Nude Mona Lisa in honour of the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci. The exhibition focuses in on one of the lesser known yet highly enigmatic works associated with the artist, the Nude Mona Lisa, which is housed in Chantilly’s Musée Condé and which was purchased by the Duke d’Aumale in 1862. The show aims to elucidate part of the mystery behind this iconic work notably through laboratory examinations and scientific analyses. w w w. p a r i s m a p. fr 13

The privately owned historical monument of Château of Clos Lucé is open to the public and among the marvels that visitors can discover are the workshops of the great inventor and designer Leonardo. The castle is hosting an exceptional exhibition through to September 8th devoted to the tapestry of The Last Supper. The monumental masterpiece in silk and gold woven for Francis I is being shown outside of the Vatican and Italy for the first time and is based on the celebrated painting by Leonardo. This year also marks the 500th anniversary of the start of construction on the Royal Château of Chambord, another major work commissioned by Francis I. This year an exhibition devoted to the architecture of the castle and Leonardo da Vinci’s direct involvement in the elaboration of the original plans is being explored for the first time. The show entitled Chambord, 1519-2019, Utopia at Work, explores the genesis of Chambord, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and lends credence to the hypothesis that Leonardo was the architect. 14 W H E R E PA R I S I J U N E 2019
Meanwhile, refreshing and at times educational strolls are always on the agenda in the French capital. The Jardin des Plantes have been open to the public for over 400 years and were established in 1626. Within the extensive grounds filled with myriad tree, plant and flower species are two “secret” gardens, one is devoted to temperate plants and the other to alpine plants, a charming spot whose entrance is hidden inside the temperate plant garden. Other highlights include the rose garden and the iris garden and by appointment you can visit the eco-garden, which shows the plants that naturally inhabit Paris and the Paris basin. On a royal note, the Luxembourg Gardens were created by Marie de’ Medici, the widow of King Henry IV, for a new residence she constructed, the Luxembourg Palace, which today houses the French Senate. The gardens, which are divided into French gardens and English gardens also house an orchard of heirloom apples, an apiary, a monumental fountain and a host of activities including a puppet show, tennis courts, chess boards and sailboats. An offbeat garden to visit on the southern edge of the Bois de Boulogne is the garden of the Serres d’Auteuil, a botanical garden nestled within a greenhouse complex. The gardens were created back in 1761 during the reign of Louis XV while the hot houses date back to the end of the 19th century. The City of Paris organises guided tours of the gardens.

A Parisian Shopping SPREE

The new Galeries Lafayette Chmaps-Elysées department store is an ode to shopping in Paris (opposite page), the recently opened Granado Pharmacy is a beauty mecca (above), and diamonds are a girl’s best friend at de Grisogono (below)
It is the fashion capital of the world and Paris certainly lives up to its stylish reputation with its luxurious shopping neighbourhoods and with every corner of the city breathing la mode, but with so many areas to shop where are the best spots to discover? Here we reveal the best addresses to make the most of your shopping time in the French capital.
I
t is the most famous avenue in the French capital, and the world, and the Avenue des Champs-Elysées shines like a diamond in the heart of Paris with Place de la Concorde on one end and the Arc de Triomphe on the other, and a myriad of boutiques and hotels aligning it. It is along the Avenue des Champs-Elysées that you will find the famous Louis Vuitton flagship store where the French house showcases its collections of leather goods, ready-to-wear lines and jewellery collections. Sprawled over four floors, the boutique, listed as a historical monument, is as famous for its windows as for its selection of monogrammed bags, so even as you stroll along the famous avenue your eyes will be treated to the talents of the house. It is also on the Avenue that one of the most anticipated openings took place. In late March, Parisians from every corner of the city flocked to the 8th arrondissement for the grand opening of the new Galeries Lafayette department store. The first major department store to open on the avenue, Galeries Lafayette brings clients an extensive list of luxury brands under the one stylish roof. Spread out over four floors, shoppers will find collections and limited edition pieces from high-end brands including Comme des Garçons, Fendi and Jimmy Choo, as well as a beauty department that offers a wide range of beauty and skincare products from brands including Lipstick Queen and Diptyque. The department store also boasts a food court inviting guests to discover the sweet delights of some of France’s renowned chefs and pastry chefs. Creating the Golden Triangle district of the French capital, along with Avenue des Champs-Elysées, is Avenue Montaigne, a wonderful address to feel like Pretty Woman, going from one boutique to the other, shopping up a very plush storm. It is on this fashionable avenue that you will find one high-end brand next to another highend brand. Chanel, Fendi, Dior and Valentino are only some of the luxurious fashion houses aligning the avenue, showcasing their latest collections, from couture to ready-to-wear. In between shopping at these gorgeous boutiques make sure you make time for a pit stop at the Plaza Athénée hotel for a glass of champagne in its famous bar, as there is no better way to feel like you are shopping in Paris than with a celebratory drink at the Plaza.
The third, and very important, avenue to complete the Golden Triangle is Avenue George V, where very recently high jewellery house de Grisogono started to call it its home. Nestled in the posh Prince de Galles hotel, the new boutique is dedicated to bringing clients an ambiance of luxury and comfort where they can discover the house’s latest offerings. Among the house’s latest collections to be unveiled is the Allegra collection, a beautiful line of jewellery that can be worn day and night featuring earrings, rings and bracelets that can be effortlessly stacked or worn alone. And just across from de Grisogono is where you will find the recently reopened Hermès boutique. Larger than before, the gorgeous boutique is sprawled over three floors, offering luxury shoppers a wonderful space to discover the house’s latest collections. Hermès’s readyto-wear collections for ladies and gentlemen, jewellery, watches and the house’s signature fragrances are all presented as well as the fashion brand’s iconic handbags. The boutique also boasts a bespoke salon for gentlemen, bringing made-to-measure to the city’s famous Golden Triangle district. Rue Saint-Honoré is one of Paris’s most visited streets by stylish Parisians as well as international travellers. With an impressive number of boutiques concentrated into one street, it is easy to see why Saint-Honoré is a popular shopping destination. Balenciaga, Chloé and Marc Jacobs are only a few of the fashion houses calling Rue Saint-Honoré home, alongside jewellery houses Pomellato and Akillis. brigade on Saint-Honoré is Buccellati, the Italian jewellery house known for its signature use of rare coloured stones in its haute joaillerie creations. The new boutique is found in Hôtel Costes, one of the city’s most popular hotels, regularly visited by Parisians and international visitors who particularly enjoy its patio restaurant.

While every part of the city offers a unique vibe and atmosphere, Palais Royal is without a doubt one of the city’s most charming areas to lose yourself in the history of the city and to of course shop, shop, shop. What was once a royal residence is now home to the Ministry of Culture, with luxury boutiques tucked beneath the beautiful arcades encircling the Palais Royal gardens. Stella McCartney, Rick Owens and Pierre Hardy are some of the fashion brands found around the gardens as well as luxury leather goods specialists including Delvaux and Corto Moltedo. Delvaux, a Belgian luxury leather goods manufacturer, was founded in 1829 and filed for its first patent for handbags in 1908. The house continues today to create luxury bags that incorporate the house’s savoir-faire and modern design, releasing its first bag made with PVC and Lycra. The Champion, a limited edition bag, is inspired in design by sportswear, even featuring a rubber underside, resembling the sole of running shoes.
A very animated corner of the city is of course the Marais. The bustling neighbourhood is bursting at the seams with boutiques for up-and-coming designers as well as our favourite established names. Ready-to-wear brands, make-up meccas and perfume specialists make up the wonderful worlds found in the trendy slash hipster slash stylish district. Recently opening up shop in this coveted neighbourhood is Granado, the cult Brazilian cosmetics and skincare brand, which uses tried and tested recipes created using natural ingredients. The first Granado pharmacy opened in 1870 in Rio de Janeiro, where locals would buy remedies and cosmetics made from plants and herbs, and today, shoppers can find a colourful collection of products that answer all beauty needs including moisturising milk, that with its plant-based formula, promises to leave skin feeling silky smooth. Paris is known for its many hidden passageways, where wine bars, restaurants and boutiques are hidden from the naked eye wandering the city’s bustling streets, and one such passageway is the chic Galerie de la Madeleine. Linking Rue Boissy d’Anglas and Place de la Madeleine, this hidden gallery is where you will find the Giambattista Valli boutique as well as the recently opened TNC boutique. This boudoir-like boutique is where owner and designer Tanya Cicanovic showcases her bespoke bags made with exotic leathers and embellished with jewellery, offering shoppers unique statement bags, ranging from totes to clutches. The boutique also puts the spotlight on other brands and designers including Linkstone designer Dany Berland who designs bespoke bracelets and cuff bracelets. Made with exotic leathers and precious stones, the accessories are handmade and can be personalised with the choice of leather, colour, size and stones. 18 W H E R E PA R I S I J U N E 2019

The designer, the son of the founders of Bottega Veneta, Gabrielecorto Moltedo, has forged his own path in the luxury leather goods universe and launched his eponymous brand in 2006, designing bags that capture traditional craftsmanship and his unique personality, designing travel-inspired creations. His latest collection gives his popular Costanza bag a new look, dressing it in see-through PVC for a transparent summer getaway look.

Flying city 7, acrylic on paper, 70 x 100 cm, 2017 © Marko Gavrilovic / Galerie Boris ; Charles Mellerio, Broche Paon, vers 1910, Collection particuliäre, Photo Benjamin Chelly
A highly colourful and aesthetic world is unfolding at the Galerie Boris in an exhibition entitled Flow and devoted to the works of Marko Gavrilović. The explosively colourful tableaux, which depict cities in all of their vivacity, resemble stained glass windows. The imaginary city created by the artist is not locked in time, it moves with strength and colour, it flows, it explodes, it seemingly surges up from the ground. The artist introduces the theme of the bull, as a symbol of strength, as well as fire and earth into his depictions of cities, elements that mankind is obliged to confront. - P.V. Showing through to June 22nd 3 rue Saint-Philippe du Roule (8th), 01 45 62 33 16
Birds in Paradise A colourful and enigmatic exhibition entitled Paradise of Birds is being played out at the Ecole des Arts Joailliers, which is supported by the high jewellery house of Van Cleef & Arpels. The exhibition showcases a selection of emblematic brooches from two private collections and the patrimonial collection of Van Cleef & Arpels. The delicate and lively bird became a popular theme in jewellery during the 19th century when tastes in interior design and décor turned to the natural world. Jewellery creation, carried along by an interest in travelling as well as richly illustrated ornithological works, would take a closer look at the bird to splendidly represent its morphology, diversity and behaviour. The jewellery dialogues with works on loan from the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD) and the Musée National de Céramique de Sèvres. The show juxtaposes pieces of jewellery by among others, Cartier, Mauboussin, Mellerio dits Meller and Van Cleef & Arpels with works from prestigious collections representing birds in paintings, drawings, engravings and porcelain. - P.V. A beautiful and rare exhibition is unfolding at the Louvre showcasing the tradition of Byzantine embroidery in Romania of the 15th and 16th centuries. The show, which is being held within the context of the France-Romania Season 2019, brings together some 30 works revolving around the Banner of Stephen the Great, a masterpiece that was offered by the Moldovan prince to the Zographou Monastery on Mount Athos. The ensemble on display underscores the exceptional nature of the Romanian collections of religious embroidery in the Byzantine and post-Byzantine tradition, a jewel of Romanian and world heritage. The works are being presented in three ensembles essentially corresponding to their function and their use. The first ensemble brings together the priestly outfits worn by bishops, priests and deacons while the second part brings together pieces used to celebrate the liturgy. The third ensemble is absolutely unique, gathering together the spectacular covers for princely tombs. - P.V. Showing through to July 29th 99 rue de Rivoli (1st), 01 40 20 53 17

On Oceans You can take the plunge into the oceans of the world at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, the National History Museum, in a groundbreaking exhibition on the world’s oceans entitled Ocean, An Unusual Dive. While oceans cover the majority of the surface of the Earth, they remain largely unknown and the show takes the visitor on a marvellous journey into the heart of the milieu with its surprising and original biodiversity. The exhibition offers a discovery of the microscopic world found in the planktons that evolve in the oceans of the world before plunging into extreme depths to meet up with the unusual creatures from below. The show takes a look at how the oceans are explored and the difficulties involved, and raises awareness about the resources, among them medicinal, that the oceans contain. Throughout the show the visitor is reminded of the threats man poses to the oceans while offering environmentallyfriendly alternatives. - P.V. The Power of Poison An educational and highly visual exhibition is underway at the Palais de la Découverte exploring venom and poison. The stars of the show are the 30 living poisonous animals tucked away in their terrariums, snakes, frogs, lizards and insects. The show is a genuine journey into the natural world and the adventure begins with a display of rocks and minerals like mercury, arsenic and radium that can be dangerous if ingested or cause undesirable effects even if one comes too close to them. But others can heal in a targeted way like the radioactive minerals used for treating cancers. The poisonous, at times healing world of flora is then revealed among the species on display, hemlock, the poison of Socrates. Another display is devoted to toxic fish and birds before the exhibition heads into the segment of live specimens, among them dendrobates, tiny forest frogs, which are widely studied for the pharmaceutical properties of their venoms. - P. A Sculptor’s Sculptor The Galerie Dina Vierny is presenting an exhibition devoted to the works of Robert Couturier, who was a student of Aristide Maillol. His long life made for the fact that he traversed the history of 20th century sculpture, becoming one of the major figures of figurative sculpture of the post-War period and the 1950s. His favourite material to work in was plaster and he appreciated its pliability and also that he could insert objects into it that he recuperated, regarding sculpture as a kind of do-it-yourself art form. Empty space plays a central role in his works, which are seemingly suspended, stretched vertically into space. The show spans 60 years of his work underscoring its consistencies and its variations while offering a unique opportunity to see a body of work that has been too often forgotten. - P.V. Showing through to June 29th 36 rue Jacob (6th), 01 42 60 23 18
The Universe of Dora Maar Photographer, painter, poet, Picasso’s lover, Dora Maar is the object of a major retrospective, the largest one ever held in France, at the Centre Pompidou. Professional photographer, a figure of the Parisian Surrealism scene, Dora Maar would eventually turn to painting and while her artistic contribution is recognised, a part of her work remains largely unknown. Through some 500 works and documents emanating from some 90 lenders, the exhibition entitled just Dora Maar, takes a look at the life of a Parisian intellectual. The fascinating itinerary begins with the opening of her photo studio followed by the first assignments, many of them fashion and advertising to her political and social street photography, her participation in the Surrealism movement and her encounter with Picasso at the time of Guernica and finally her career as a painter, which she embarked upon later in life. - P.V. WHERE PARIS PROMOTION
t was back in 1991 that a venue opened up in Montmartre showcasing a private collection of some 300 works, sculptures, engravings, objects and furnishings by Salvador Dalí offering a unique glimpse into the work and world of the Surrealist sculptor, designer, engraver and illustrator. Dalí Paris re-opened its doors to the public last April offering a new journey into the world of the artist and enabling the public to discover the art dealer and collector, Beniamino Levi, who assembled the collection, which remains the only permanent exhibition in France, devoted to Dalí, the master of Surrealism. Beniamino Levi, an eminent Italian gallery owner started putting the collection together in the 1970s. Upon returning to Milan after the Second World War, he frequented actors in the effervescent artistic scene, notably Lucio Fontana and Alberto Burri and became friends with the art critic Franco Passoni with whom he opened the Galleria Levi in Milan. He first met Dalí in 1974 in his suite at the Meurice hotel where Dalí and his wife Gala resided during their Parisian sojourns. Levi would first purchase two paintings, the 1932 Egg on the Dish without the Dish and The Invisible Harp done in 1934, which he exhibited in his gallery in Milan. After additional encounters in Paris, New York and Dalí’s home in Cadaquès in Spain, the collector launched into a new challenge, editing the sculptures of Dalí and he would progressively acquire the rights to 29 images taken from the artist’s most celebrated paintings including the Persistence of Memory, the Temptation of Saint Anthony and The Burning Giraffe, giving him the possibility of having bronzes made from models conceived by the artist. The bronze sculptures
of these images were cast in Switzerland at the legendary Perseo Foundry, which casts the work of Alberto Giacometti and Fernando Botero. Today, Dalí Paris, which has been given a redesign by the architect and scenographer Adeline Rispal offers a meander through the artist’s works and allows the visitor to embark on a non-exhaustive journey into the artistic path taken by Dalí and revealing a not so well known segment of his work while putting the spotlight on his technique and creativity. The museum segways into a gallery and while the museum presents rare sculptures, the gallery offers these works in different sizes and patinas for collectors in limited editions. The venue also hosts exhibits devoted to contemporary artists and little known aspects of Dalí’s work in a dedicated gallery space.

Intuitive Chicago Highly original works are on show at the Halle Saint Pierre demonstrating the unique and inventive contribution that 10 artists have made to the vibrant art scene in Chicago. The INTUIT, the Chicago museum that is dedicated to Outsider and Intuitive Art, conceived the exhibition, entitled Chicago - a Hotbed of Outsider Art, and the works by the 10 artists on display clearly stand out from the mainstream. Some of the works bring to mind elements of folk art evidenced in the portraits of women by Pauline Simon. Lee Godie, who lived on the streets of Chicago and often slept in the city’s gardens, is considered to be one of the most widely collected artists in Chicago. She would in the 1970s and 1980s add series of self-portraits taken in photo booths to her repertoire, offering a glimpse perhaps into how a homeless woman forged her identity. - P.V.
The Fine and the Fascinating at Fragonard The House of Fragonard, the Grasse-based perfume maker, possesses one of the finest collections of perfume bottles, dating from Antiquity to the present, and perfume-related objects. The Fragonard Museum on Rue Scribe in Paris opened its doors in 1983 and has recently undergone a vast renovation and enlargement to showcase the collection, which has been enriched with new acquisitions and rare objects. New acquisitions include an 18th century perfume bottle in the shape of a bird in porcelain, gold, agate and enamel and a stunning array of 18th century travelling cosmetic and perfume cases in precious materials. The museum also has an interactive space for discovering raw materials like mimosa and lavender that are used in perfume making. The collections are presented in a succession of 19th century period rooms in a private mansion. - P.V. 9 rue Scribe (9th), 01 40 06 10 09 50 W HE R E PA R I S I J U N E 2019

Reality Abstraction The Propriété Caillebotte is hosting a retrospective devoted to the works of the German artist Markus Lüpertz entitled Dare to Paint, which is unfolding in the Ferme Ornée and the park of the bucolic property just outside of Paris. The show brings together the paintings and drawings of his work from the beginnings in the 1960s to the present. The striking works are often a combination of the figurative with the abstract offering up a vision that is at times spectacular. One of the most eyecatching paintings in the show is the Untitled from the Donald Duck series, which in fact looks more like a multi-coloured cat than a duck. The show brings together 12 drawings, 38 paintings and 13 sculptures exhibited outdoors on the property. - P.V. A Sweet Addition to Saint-Germain As rising rents cause many long-running restaurants in Saint-Germain-des-Prés to close or give way to fashion-driven tables that are more about seeing and being seen than good eating, the recently opened Blueberry Steam Bar, a little canteen in the atmospheric Rue du Sabot is a very welcome opening. An easy walk from the café terraces along the Boulevard Saint-Germain, it charms with a wonderfully louche décor of red lights and bare wooden tables by interior designer Gabriel Pistre that recalls colonial-vintage bars in Hong Kong or Shanghai. An excellent chef from Hong Kong prepares a wonderful menu of small-plate dishes, including fried lotus root chips with spicy tofu dip, aubergine braised with miso, Black Pearl dim sum, steamed squid’s ink pasta triangles filled with chopped shrimp, Hong Kong Street, siu mai filled with chicken, pork and smoked Scarmoza cheese, and white sesame noodles. Service is charming, and the dessert not to miss is the litchi-cream filled religieuse pastry, a perfect expression of the East meets West sensibility of this romantic little place. – Alexander Lobrano Blueberry Steam Bar 2 rue du Sabot (6th), 01 45 48 96 65

Simple Crêpes By working only with the highest quality products, including organic flour and eggs, Brittany born Bertrand Larcher has created a delicious little empire of restaurants specialising in crêpes (made with white flour) and galettes (made with buckwheat flour) in Paris and Japan. Now he’s opened his fourth Breizh Café table in the charming and very Parisian Batignolles neighbourhood of the 17th arrondissement, a delightful part of the city few travellers and visitors ever find their way to. With a stylish and very warm contemporary interior of oak and battleship grey, this new address is a great choice for a light, healthy and very French casual meal. Start off with some oysters from Quiberon or maybe a rolled smoked salmon galette, and then tuck into a spinach-filled galette with a fried egg and grated cheese or a classic one with ham, cheese and a fried egg. Crêpes come with a variety of fillings, but many regulars like the crêpe with salted-caramel sauce the best. They also pour a selection of sixty ciders from small Breton producers, and prices are easy on the wallet. – A.L. For Sushi Lovers They’re two reasons that sushi lovers will be happy in Paris. One is the remarkable quality of the fish landed by France’s fleet of artisanal fisherman working out of Atlantic and Mediterranean ports, and the other is L’Abysse, chef Yannick Alléno’s superb new sushi bar, which won a Michelin star this year. This casually chic table with a gorgeous décor that includes white porcelain bisque elements that create the impression of being inside a reef of coral is located on the ground floor of Alléno’s Pavillon Ledoyen restaurant in the gardens of the Champs-Elysées. An ardent sushi lover, Alléno recruited sushi master Yasunari Okazaki, and also created a variety of intriguing dishes that meld his own style with Japanese tradition. Stop by for some sushi and sake, they have the best sake list in Paris, at one of the twelve counter seats, or settle in at a table in this beautiful room and treat yourself to the spectacular Omakase tasting menu, which is a suite of sublime dishes like artichoke tofu with smoked perch pike eggs, oysters in sake gélée, vanilla-flavoured lobster in a sesame nage and a variety of nigri sushi. – A.L. One of the city’s most popular steakhouses is fast becoming the city’s best Sunday brunch rendezvous. Beefbar, located in the very chic 8th arrondissement of the French capital, just off the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, is a great idea for brunch before strolling and shopping along the glamorous avenue on a sunny Parisian Sunday afternoon. Although the idea of a steakhouse may scare some people away, the menu here is an inviting one for all tastes with more than just meat on the menu. For traditional brunch fare order the California Dreamin’, a poached egg served on a bed of avocado and topped with hollandaise sauce with a hint of chilli, or for a more steakhouse-style brunch order the Sunday Big K, a double Kobe beef bacon cheeseburger topped with an egg. The restaurant also offers a hearty kale salad for patrons looking for something lighter. One of the best things though about the Beefbar brunch is that there is no set menu, which means you can brunch à la carte, which also features a delicious selection of sweeter options including freshly made churros dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with chocolate sauce and dulce de leche sauce. Reservations are advised. – S.I. Beefbar 5 rue Marbeuf (8th), 01 44 31 40 00 60 W HE R E PA R I S I J U N E 2019

Lebanese Tapas A wonderful little restaurant has opened up in the trendy 11th arrondissement where the flavours of the Middle East are celebrated. L’Artisan Libanais invites you into its café market for tasty Lebanese fare with a charming ambiance complete with Arabic music playing in the playground and embroidered woven bags delicately hanging on the walls, which are available to purchase. The menu features all our favourite Lebanese salads and dips such as tabouli, fatoush and hommus, as well as mini spinach pies, falafel and kebbeh, Lebanese meatballs made with beef, bulgur and minced onion. The menu also includes platters with a delicious mixture of dishes that is great for sharing, or opt for a Pita Plate with a choice of vegetarian or meat filling served with hommus, fatoush salad and potatoes. – S.I. Ever since it opened in 1875, the Grand Café Capucines in the heart of Paris has been one of the most legendary addresses in the city and a popular place for Parisians dining out after a performance at the Opéra Garnier or one of the surrounding theatres. Now it’s just reopened after a striking contemporary makeover by design team Torro & Liauthard. Aside from the cosy sidewalk terrace with overstuffed ribbed apricot-coloured banquettes, the most striking feature of the main dining room is now a ceiling installation of dozens of suspended panes of bronze, which gives the room a stylish modern appearance and also reflects light beautifully. The menu at this Parisian institution, which serves twenty-four-hours-a-day seven-days-a-week, has also been freshened up. Well-known for its trays of freshly shucked oysters and shellfish, it now also offers delicious dishes like pan-fried baby cuttlefish with Pata Negra chorizo and octopus carpaccio with black olive cream and a sauce vierge, both starters, and mains that include sole meunière and Charolais beef carpaccio. Don’t miss the crêpes flambée in Grand Marnier for dessert either. – A.L. Grand Café Capucines 4 blvd des Capucines (9th), 01 43 12 19 00 62 W HE R E PA R I S I J U N E 2019

A Taste of Italy He is one of France’s most loved chefs and now Pierre Gagnaire has jumped on the Italian bandwagon with the recent opening of Piero TT, an Italian trattoria that is as charming as the chef himself. On the chic Left Bank, a stone’s throw off Boulevard Saint-Germain, this new table is a nod to everyone’s favourite cuisine, Italian. Even when visiting Paris, a taste of Italy is still very attractive, especially when overlooked by a great chef. Start with the charcuterie platter or the Italian cheese platter with aged parmesan, pecorino and gorgonzola with a refreshing glass of Spritz, before enjoying traditional dishes including Cacio e Pepe bucatini pasta, ricotta and rocket ravioli served with sage butter sauce, and veal Milanese. The restaurant also serves a charming selection of Italian wine and one of the best tiramisus in the city. – S.I. Piero TT 44 rue du Bac (7th), 01 43 20 00 40

ADVERTORIAL
“Learning to be French through Comedy” As tourists or expats in Paris there are some quirks we have all noticed among the Parisians, the way they march to their destinations, their constant pouting and the way they order at restaurants. Olivier Giraud has too, noticed that the Parisians are unique in their behaviour, and has decided to bring all those idiosyncrasies to light. Born in Bordeaux, Olivier moved to Paris to study hotel management and after graduating he moved to the United States where he managed a restaurant of a 5-star hotel. After four years, and many soul-searching nights, he decided to return to France and follow his real dream of becoming a
comedian. Having experienced the cultural differences between the Parisians and Americans while in Florida, and having observed for himself the tourists of all nationalities in Paris, he decided to not shy away from the hardhitting questions of how one becomes a real Parisian. How do you grab a waiter’s attention in a café? In the metro, what do you do if you see an older lady or a pregnant woman? And how do you behave in a cab? Putting together a one man show, How to become a Parisian in one hour?, the stand-up comic will leave you rolling in your seat from
laughter and 100% prepared for any situation in the City of Light. The ultimate Parisian theatre experience created by Olivier Giraud! Enjoyed by more than 500 000 spectators, this show is much more than a stand-up comedy! It’s a hilarious, incisive and visual observation of the Parisian behaviour! Performed 100% in English all year round in one of the most beautiful Italian Renaissance style theatres (600 seats) located in the lively heart of Paris... Ohlala! Non-stop laughter from a real Parisian guaranteed to leave you wanting more. This is THE PERFECT GUIDE to enjoy Paris and the Parisians!

Paris Metro ◗ Paris is crossed by 14 Métro lines and five RER (express suburban) lines, all numbered and named for their final destination (terminus). Did you know that there are 300 stations that make up Paris’ metro system?
80 W HE R E PA R I S I J U N E 2019
◗ Each Métro trip requires one ticket regardless of how many transfers you make, though you must buy an extra ticket for the RER outside the city limits. Keep your ticket until you exit.
◗ Tickets are sold in all stations and in cafés (tabacs) with a ticket sign outside, single (1.90€/2€ if purchased on a bus) or by 10 (un carnet - 14.50€). This map includes the new tramway line.
◗ “Paris Visite” passes offer unlimited travel on the Métro and buses (1day, 2-day, 3-day, 5-day). The Métro and RER start running at 5:30am, and stop around 1 am.
◗ While the Métro is an extremely safe way to travel, watch out for pickpockets in crowded trains and stations. For information in English, call the transportation company (RATP) directly at 08.92.68.41.14.

My Paris
PHILIPPE VERDUMO
ASSISTANT HEAD CONCIERGE AT FOUR SEASONS HÔTEL GEORGE V PARIS
Arc de Triomphe du Caroussel
Paris is known around the world as the City of Light. What would you recommend visitors do in the evenings to really take in its beauty? I would recommend a cruise on the River Seine as the city becomes magical in the evening when its monuments are illuminated. You will be won over by the charm of the Parisian bridges like the Pont Neuf and the Pont Alexandre III. During this cruise, the sparkling Eiffel Tower and the replica of the Statue of Liberty on the Swan Island will amaze you. As a culinary capital what are three of your favourite restaurants that you would recommend our readers to try? For a cool, relaxed and trendy atmosphere, I would definitely recommend Le George. The chef, Simone Zanoni offers a light and modern, Mediterranean-style cuisine for sharing. My second recommendation is Taillevent. The new chef, David Bizet, originally from Normandy, passionate about hunting, fishing and nature, imagined a menu respecting the history of Taillevent, food and wine pairing. My third choice, for traditional old-fashioned bistro dining, is Auberge Bressane. What are the top three monuments not to be missed while in Paris? Le Louvre remains a museum to be seen. The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel that was built at the very beginning of the 19th century to commemorate Napoleon’s military victories. Looking west, the arch is aligned with the 82 W HE R E PA R I S I J U N E 2019
Cruise along the Seine
obelisk (Place de la Concorde), the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe and the Grande Arche de la Défense. If our readers wanted to spend their day shopping, would you recommend they do so on the Left Bank or the Right Bank? Of course for high-end fashion brands I would recommend to shop on the Right Bank in the Golden Triangle and on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré and Rue SaintHonoré. I would recommend to go to the Left Bank if you are looking for unique boutiques especially in the 6th and 7th arrondissements, home to the chic literary quartier of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. For people who are looking for a different shopping experience, I would send them to the Viaduc-des-Arts, near Bastille. What would be the most romantic date in the capital of romance? Montmartre. It is known as the artists’ district, for the dancers of the French cancan and for the movie Amélie Poulain. Small winding alleys give it an image of a Parisian village. What would you recommend for families to discover while visiting the French capital? Your favourite three children-friendly spots. Discover Paris with FlyView located near the Palais Garnier. You will fly over the capital with a 360° view of its most beautiful monuments. Go to the top of the Eiffel Tower. The Natural History Museum, which is a fun place for the kids.
Moulin Rouge
What are your favourite cocktail bars in the city? The Kube hotel with its ice bar by Grey Goose. The 1905 is located in the Marais and you have to take a narrow and dark staircase to the right of the façade to enter a cosy speakeasy with crazy cocktails such as A Rebours by Adèle Fardeau, the mixologist. The Experimental Cocktail Bar is a very cool speakeasy with crafty bartenders. Brunch and high tea are Sunday favourites, where would you suggest to our readers to enjoy the best treats? Enjoy the famous tea-time at the Four Seasons Hotel George V served in the galerie, a grand lounge decorated with Flemish tapestries and amazing fresh flowers by Jeff Leatham, and pastries by Chef Maxime Frédéric. For a more relaxed atmosphere, I would recommend a stop at Le Loir dans la Théière while visiting the Marais.
My Perfect Day 9am: Breakfast at the Train Bleu. 12pm: Visit the Decorative Art Museum on Rue de Rivoli. The collections are privileged testaments to the French art of living. From the museum, walk through to the Palais Royal, to have lunch at Astair. 3pm: Spend the afternoon on the Left Bank and enjoy strolling along the quays or shopping in the heart of Saint-Germain. 9pm: Dinner at Le Cinq.
