Daytona Lagoon Offers a Great Way to Beat the Heat

What do you do when you’ve had enough ocean fun during your visit to Daytona Beach? Why, head to Daytona Lagoon, of course! Located just steps away from the oceanfront on Florida’s famed A1A in the Ocean Walk complex, Daytona Lagoon offers fun for the whole family and a myriad of ways to stay cool during the hot, hot summer. The park is actually like two parks in one. In the Activity and Ride section, there’s plenty of fun to be had, sans water. The MEGA arcade includes over 70 immersive games, offering something for everyone. Choose from virtual sports, racing or shooting, or take to the dance floor to show off your sweet moves. Classics such as Skee ball and air hockey are the perfect way to challenge parent against kiddo in familyfriendly competition. Even better, select games earn you points that can be redeemed for prizes. If you prefer links to videos, challenge yourself on the 18-hole miniature golf course. There’s also a rock wall and go-karting as well as a laser-tag arena, which was enhanced and expanded to over 3,000 feet in 2017. Also in 2017, the park added a new Sky Maze attrac-

10

• wheretraveler.com

tion. Featuring the Sky Trail Navigator ropes course that includes 10 different obstacles, and the 70-foot Sky Rail zipline, the indoor attraction is suspended above the MEGA arcade. New in 2019, guests can also enjoy Virtual Rabbids, an exciting premium virtual reality experience, in addition to several other high-tech games. During warmer months, you can also take a walk on the wet side, by heading out to the park’s water slides and wave pool. If you’re looking for a leisurely experience, check out Pelican’s Pass, the water park’s lazy river attraction. Or ride the waves in Treasure Lagoon, a 500,000-gallon wave pool. For more daring thrill seekers, there are a number of slides to choose from, including the recently opened Shaka Halfpipe and Kraken’s Revenge, which both soar five stories above the park. For less daring thrills, small fry can splash around in Castaway Bay. Water rides and attractions are available March through October, while dry attractions are open year around. For more information, including pricing and hours, be sure to visit Daytona Lagoon’s website. 601 Earl Street, Daytona Beach (386) 254-5020 www.daytonalagoon.com

Museum of Arts and Science Daytona Beach and its surrounding areas have long been destinations for visitors who seek fun in the sun with a side of speed. Miles of pristine, white beaches beckon tourists to play at the ocean’s edge, while the Daytona International Speedway is considered by many to be the mecca for NASCAR fans the world over. Likewise, motorcycle enthusiasts travel from near and far to visit during March’s famed Bike Week, and again during the fall’s popular Biketoberfest. But with all of this to offer, you may be wondering: where’s the culture in Daytona? So glad you asked, because you should look no further than the Museum of Arts and Science, Central Florida’s largest musuem.

Whether you’re looking for something to round out your beach visit, you’re faced with a rainy day or you’d just like to explore a local hidden gem, be sure to carve out time to visit MOAS. 352 South Nova Road, Daytona Beach (386) 255-0285 www.moas.org

COURTESY DAYTONA BEACH CVB

The Museum of Arts and Science (MOAS for short) was established in 1955, and was chartered by the state of Florida in 1962. When art historian Gary Russell Libby became the museum’s executive director in 1977, it meant significant growth for the little museum. Under Libby’s leadership, MOAS earned its accreditation under the American Alliance of Museums, and also became a Smithsonian Affiliate.

Today, the museum is located on a 90-acre nature preserve, and is home to more than 30,000 objects. Permanent displays at MOAS include the Dow Gallery of American Art; the Schulte Gallery of Chinese Art; and the Cuban Foundation Museum, which includes the largest permanent collection of Cuban art outside of Cuba. In addition, guests can explore the Prehistory of Florida, including Florida’s Giant Ground Sloth skeleton. In the Root Family Museum, discover restored railroad cars, antique automobiles, and the largest collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia in the state of Florida. Other attractions include the Linda and Charles Williams Children’s Museum, an interactive spot just for kiddos, as well as a new state-of-the-art planetarium. And don’t miss the Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art, which showcases the largest collection of Florida-based art in the world.

Dining Scene

Whether you’re in the mood for fresh fish or a plate of pasta, Daytona has you covered. Here’s what to expect when dining out.

Flavors to Savor Daytona’s burgeoning restaurant scene is host to one-of-a-kind local eateries, a plethora of microbreweries and wine bars and some of the freshest seafood on the Atlantic coast.

©DAYTONA BEACH AREA CVB

Eat Local The city and surrounding areas are known for fresh seafood, local produce and farm-totable fare. Whether you’re craving grass-fed filet mignon, seafood lasagna, Asian fusion, handcrafted hops or just a juicy cheeseburger, you’ll find it at one of Daytona Beach’s many local, independent restaurants.

Drink Up Perfectly pair your meal with tasty custom pints and carafes of local beer and wine. Here you’ll find eight cozy microbreweries owned and operated by passion-

ate hopheads. An array of sophisticated and sultry wine bars offer exquisite selections along with artisan cheese and specialty salads served in armchairs or on outdoor patios.

Vegan/Vegetarian Daytona is home to several eateries, cafes, bistros and diners that feature meat-free menus. Choices range from juice bars with vegan-only options to gluten-free gastropubs with homemade vegan burgers. For ethnic cuisine, there are traditional Indian restaurants, a natural foods store and tons of Italian kitchens with vegetarian pasta, pizza and calzones.

Seafood From mahi mahi and swordfish to shrimp and snapper, finding a restaurant in the Daytona Beach area that serves locally

caught seafood is a cinch. You don’t want to miss the fresh sea scallops or the catch-of-the-day served on dockside patios overlooking a marina or beachside with the sound of waves crashing and the wind in your hair. Several seafood shops serve meals inhouse, so you can eat and bring something fresh home for the next night’s dinner.

Fine Dining Head to Ormond Beach or downtown Daytona Beach for the day or just for dinner to explore all the popular fine dining establishments the areas have to offer. Restaurants set in historic houses and chic modern environments invite diners to sample delectable cuisines and embark on culinary adventures featuring tastes from along the coast to around the world.

Located on the corner of Atlantic Avenue by the Ocean Center and across from the Daytona Hilton, Hog Heaven BBQ has been a local favorite for over 30 years. Because we are locally owned and operated, we cook our BBQ fresh every day. If you’ve been on the beach here, you’ve probably enjoyed the aroma of our signature smoked brisket, pulled pork and chicken, cooking “low and slow” by the same pitmaster since 1987. Over the years, the area around us has changed a lot, but we’ve kept our BBQ heavenly and rooted in Southern hospitality and charm. Come inside and cool off, or take a seat on our patio and enjoy the sights and sounds of Daytona’s beachfront area. Our aim is to “Put Some South in Your Mouth.” 37 N.
