Sin City On-Screen By Susan Stapleton

“JASON BOURNE” The fifth installment of the Matt Damon film came out in 2016, with the former CIA assassin still on the run and trying to find out about his father’s past. While the film showcases locations around the world, the thrilling ending takes place in Vegas at EXOCON, the international convention that caters to the hacker, surveillance and cyber security industries. Those convention scenes took place inside Aria with real crowds in the background. As Bourne pursues The Asset (Vincent Cassel), the scene spills out of the convention and into a pursuit along Las Vegas Boulevard. The car chase actually took place on the Las Vegas Strip. “CASINO” Martin Scorsese’s 1995 film tells the story of Frank Rosenthal, who ran the

Stardust, Fremont and Hacienda casinos in Las Vegas for the Chicago Outfit from the 1970s until the early 1980s. Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci star. The movie starts with De Niro’s Rosenthal seemingly blown up when he starts his car, a scene filmed at Main Street Station. Oscar’s Steakhouse at the Plaza stars in a scene with Ginger McKenna (Stone) and Rosenthal arguing—the Fremont Street Experience in the background. Off-Strip Piero’s Italian Cuisine served as a stand in for The Leaning Tower in the movie, with all three stars making an appearance there toward the end of the film. “OCEAN’S ELEVEN” The 2001 remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and Matt Damon, with the Bellagio playing a special role

What better place to use as a film backdrop than Las Vegas? The city has been the setting for movies covering mobsters, bachelor parties gone wrong and even a thriller with a CIA assassin. Find out where these film’s stars would’ve stood if they stepped off the screen and into Sin City, then follow in their footsteps.

“THE GODFATHER” Two of the three films in the Francis Ford Coppola-directed trilogy used Las Vegas as a backdrop. The Corleone family came out in 1972 with Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone and Al Pacino as Michael Corleone. Pacino runs the Tropicana in the first film. The name changed to the Tropigala in “The Godfather: Part II” to avoid copyright issues.

in the film. Producer Jerry Weintraub was friends with Steve Wynn, who owned the Bellagio at the time and gave the crew unrestricted 24-hour access. Valet parking, the Fountains of Bellagio, the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens and a fake wall in front of Le Cirque all make an appearance in the film; although, scenes from the cashier’s cage on the casino floor, the Mirador Suite, the vault and the surveillance room used a set. The staircase Tess Ocean (Roberts) walks down was removed two years after the film came out.

“THE HANGOVER” The classic take on a bachelor party gone wrong came out in 2009 starring Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Justin Bartha with Caesars Palace (does Caesar live here?) as the backdrop for plenty of scenes in the film. The Villa from the film was actually a sound stage, since director Todd Phillips wanted to avoid damaging a real suite and tigers aren’t allowed in the rooms. But the design did take its inspiration from another film, “Rain Man.” Both featured the Emperor Suite in the Forum Tower, which guests can still request. The stars did film on the 24th floor of the Augustus Tower for scenes in the hallway and elevator lobby.

Opposite page: Drive (slowly) along the Strip to see what “Jason Bourne” saw during his car chase. This page from top: Bring your Wolfpack to the Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis, seen in “The Hangover;” Stop by the Fountains of Bellagio at night to recreate the iconic “Ocean’s Eleven” scene.
