MAIN: ©VISIT SAN ANTONIO

Exploring the outdoors and visiting San Antonio’s most popular attractions don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Get out and experience these natural wonders. Visit what’s considered the most significant archaeological site in Texas. Evidence of human habitation dates back 11,000 years in Brackenridge Park (210.826.1412); Native American artifacts dating to 9200 B.C. were found in the park’s Olmos Basin near

Hildebrand Avenue. A 343-acre site, the park encompasses some of the Alamo City’s most popular attractions, including the San Antonio Zoo, Japanese Tea Gardens, San Antonio Botanical Garden and Witte Museum. A great way to take in all these sites is aboard the Eagle Train, which travels on tracks that have been in operation since 1956. The Natural Bridge Caverns (210.651.6101) are the largest known commercial caverns

in Texas. The name comes from the 60-footlong stretch of natural limestone at the caverns’ entrance. The labyrinth of caverns was discovered by a group of college students turned explorers in 1960, then partially developed by the family that owned the land. The caverns stay at a balmy 70 degrees yearround, and a variety of tours take place 180 feet beneath the earth’s surface.

A Texas-sized safari, the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch (830.438.7400) lets you get up close to camels, zebras, ostriches, antelope and many more beautiful creatures—500 animals in all—from the comfort of your car on 450 acres of protected scenic land. Looking for a more personal interaction? Visit the walk-about area to commune with giraffes, lemurs, peacocks and gibbons. You can also feed African pygmy goats in the petting barnyard.

A 12,000-acre wilderness area, Government Canyon State Natural Area (210.688.9055) has more than 40 miles of trails, and is also popular for birding and geocaching. Great views can be had at the Chula Vista, Sotol and North and South Bluff Spurs overlooks; discover what scientists believe are Acrocanthosaurus and Sauroposeidon tracks, believed to be 110 million years old. The area is home to the endangered golden-cheeked warbler, which nests only in the wooded ravines and canyons of Central Texas. Learn about wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, how plants adapt to their environment, the migration of the monarch butterfly and much more at the Phil Hardberger Park’s (210.492.7472) healthy lineup of public education events. There are also dog parks, basketball courts, a nature play area and trails for walking, hiking and biking.
