San Antonio’s Marvelous Museums

Display at the Buckhorn Museum

These interactive experiences are bursting with Texas history, science and masters of the art world By Jennifer McKee

The San Antonio Museum of Art (210.978.8100) also takes you on a world tour, this time through 5,000 years of Egyptian, Greek and Roman art. In addition, it offers notable collections of Latin American art and Asian art, which showcases works from Korea, India, Japan and what is considered one of the globe’s most important Chinese ceramics exhibit. 10

Those who love to celebrate modern art can do so at Blue Star Contemporary (210.227.6960), which hosts both on-site (such as “Effort Economy,” through May 5) and off-site (“Plexus c18,” at the airport through Oct. 31) exhibitions. Additional programs include open studios (go behind the scenes with the artist), a film series and panel discussions. The five-museums-in-one Buckhorn (210.247.4000) is, just as Texas, larger than life. Here, you can practice your sharpshooting skills in the shooting gallery, discover oddities in the “Carnival of Curiosities,” explore Texas history and find out just what it takes to become a Texas ranger.
