San Antonio: Where History Lives
Lunch staples at the Guenther House
When you think San Antonio, the Alamo is most likely one of the first things that comes to mind. It’s called the “Alamo City,” after all, and the now-defunct Alamo Village was the set for 72 movies, everything from John Wayne’s classic “The Alamo” (1960) to “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” (1985). Home of the infamous 1836 battle in which Texas fought for its independence from Mexico, The Alamo is a 300-year-old former Spanish mission turned fortress. Today, it is one of the most-visited historic sites in Texas, with 2.5 million visitors a year. Within its environs you’ll find the “Fortress Alamo: The Key to Texas” exhibit, which recounts the long and proud history of the fort (through 2018), a church, gardens, museum and living-history encampment. In 2015, San Antonio’s missions were deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site. The grouping of five missions includes Mission Valero (The 10
Alamo, 210.225.1391), Mission San Francisco de la Espada (210.627.2064), Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mission San Jose and Mission Concepción (210.932.1001 for the latter three). The King William Historic District was zoned as Texas’ first historic district. The 25-block area adjacent to downtown San Antonio was built by German merchants in the late 1800s and was considered the most elegant residential area in the city. Here you’ll find the Guenther House (210.227.1061), former home to the Pioneer Flour Mills, a museum, store and restaurant that’s a San Antonio breakfast and lunch staple. Get an additional eye into period design at the Steves Homestead (210.227.9160), a threestory Victorian Mansion also located in the King William district. Built for the founder of Steves

Lumber Company, it was San Antonio’s first building to feature an indoor swimming pool. Home to the San Fernando Cathedral (210.227.1297), built in 1738 (and was at one time a lookout for Mexican General Santa Anna), San Antonio’s Main Plaza (210.225.9800) lies at the city’s center and dates back to the early 1800s. The public space is known for its bubbling fountains, great tree cover and brings in art installations, food trucks, live entertainment and farmers’ markets. While downtown, history buffs should add Casa Navarro (210.226.4801) to their list; it was the home of Texas patriot José Antonio Navarro (1795-1871), a native son who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. Guests can view period furnishings, read copies of his papers and learn more about him from historical interpreters. There are many more great sites, historic and contemporary, to see in San Antonio. For the Dogs San Antonio is considered Texas’ most pet-friendly city By Jennifer McKee
La Villita is a great place to explore with your best friend.
Dog Parks An abundance of green areas welcome your furry friends in San Antonio. But at Pearsall and McAllister parks (210.207.7275), your dogs will feel like they’ve gone to paradise. These city parks are equipped with water fountains that are close to the ground and brightly colored play areas. Picnic areas, exercise zones and walking trails are also available.
Japanese Tea Garden What was once a rock quarry is now one of the most tranquil spots in San Antonio. This stunning place (210.559.3148) is full of winding pathways, stone-arch bridges, blooming flowers, a 60-foot waterfall and ponds filled with koi. Also on site, the Jingu House Café (210.212.4814) has a large patio area and jazz in the garden every fall. The relaxing spot is perfect for best friends.
Government Canyon State Natural Area Discover myriad walking trails at this wilderness area that protects the city’s drinking water. Government Canyon (210.688.9055) has 40 miles of trails, 23 walk-in camp sites and the only known dinosaur footprints on public lands in the county. It’s a great place for both humans and canines to burn off some energy.
La Gloria The menu at this dog-friendly cantina (210.267.9040) features dishes inspired by the chef’s travels throughout Mexico. Celebrating that country’s street foods, the lively location inside the Pearl District also offers fine selections of tequila, rum and mescal. Take in scenic views from the expansive shaded patio.

La Villita Just south of the River Walk, La Villita Historic Arts Village (210.207.8614) was settled in 1939 as one of the city’s first neighborhoods. Still flourishing today, it’s the place to find authentic, San Antonio-style wares, from folk art and contemporary jewelry to locally designed fashions and much more. It’s a great place to take your furry companion on an exciting journey.
