Dear Friends: As Mayor and on behalf of the City of Chicago, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Chicago. I commend the Where® QuickGuide for identifying some of the most exciting and easily accessible neighborhoods in our city. Situated at the crossroads of the country and the world, Chicago is a destination for travelers far and wide. With our thriving arts and entertainment scene and dynamite nightlife, everyone can find something to do. Chicago is one of the dining capitals of the world, with restaurants that continue to win national acclaim and international awards. And we are one of the few cities in the world where you can enjoy the luxury and bustle of downtown just steps away from inviting beaches and sparkling Lake Michigan. Chicago’s rich and diverse culture is celebrated across the city and throughout the year. Cultural festivals attract young and old to neighborhoods founded by the generations of immigrants who built their homes here: Greektown, Pilsen, Ukranian Village, Andersonville. Even today, the city is home to more than 26 ethnic groups and Chicagoans collectively speak more than 100 languages. Chicago’s greatest asset is its people. Exploring the city reveals friendly faces in all neighborhoods. Whether at a summer Cubs game in Wrigley Field, a comedy show or a festival in Washington Park, Chicagoans come together and welcome visitors and neighbors alike. Thank you again for choosing the City of Chicago as your travel destination, and I offer my best wishes for an enjoyable visit.

Sincerely,

Elisa Drake Editor Sarah Perkins Associate Editor Cher Wheeler Feature Designer

North Michigan Avenue from the Chicago River to Oak Street.

History Originally called Pine Street, this stretch of Michigan Avenue hit its commercial and residential stride (and took on the new name) when a bridge over the Chicago River was constructed in 1920 to connect it to the south end of Michigan Avenue. In the 1940s, real estate developer Arthur Rubloff christened it “The Magnificent Mile,” and it has lived up to the moniker ever since.

Essentials At the southern end of the famous street sit two of the city’s most iconic buildings. The 1921 Wrigley Building (400 N. Michigan Ave.) was the headquar-

On the east side of the avenue is the 1925 Neo-Gothic Tribune Tower (435 N. Michigan Ave.), the result of a worldwide design competition by the newspaper giant to create “the most beautiful and eye-catching office building in the world.” Bookending the Mag Mile on the north end is the 1,127-foot-tall John Hancock Center (875 N. Michigan Ave.). Two blocks away at Chicago Avenue is the Historic Water Tower (806 N. Michigan Ave.) and its companion Chicago Avenue Pumping Station (821 N. Michigan Ave.). The lovely, limestone sandcastlelike structures were built in 1869 and stand as the sole public buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The Water Tower houses the City Gallery (312.742.0808); the Pumping Station still has a working pump and is home to acclaimed Lookingglass Theatre Company (312.337.0665). Just to the east, the Museum of Contemporary Art (220 E. Chicago Ave., 312.280.2660) showcases one of the country’s best collections of modern art.

Where to Shop The Magnificent Mile ranks with the world’s best shopping avenues. With three vertical malls, plus fabulous flagships and plenty of hidden gems, there’s something for every style and budget. At the north end resides seven-story Water Tower Place (835 N. Michigan Ave., 312.440.3166). Opened in

The Magnificent Mile

The Magnificent Mile 1976, it remains as vibrant as ever with more than 100 shops including floral-themed handbag brand Vera Bradley (312.202.0443); kiddie paradise The LEGO Store (312.494.0760); trendy women’s boutique AKIRA (312.951.5508); and stylish Italian label A|X Armani Exchange (312.280.4749). Here also is the bi-level, 52,000-square-foot American Girl Place (Levels 1 and 2, 877.247.5223). On the 7th floor is the Chicago Sports Museum (312.202.0500) and adjacent Harry Caray’s 7th Inning Stretch eatery (312.202.0500). Just up the street, enter the elegant, marble-filled 900 North Michigan Shops (900 N. Michigan Ave., 312.915.3916), where a glittering atrium reveals six floors of posh shopping—L.K. Bennett (312.374.0958), Gucci (312.664.5504), MaxMara (312.475.9500) and more—anchored by Bloomingdale’s (312.440.4460). Head to space519 (312.751.1519), a refined general store from two local style experts or across-the-pond import Karen Millen (312.867.1760), which features a variety of glam yet sophisticated women’s designs. For an indulgent treat, you can’t beat the champagnecream truffles made with Dom Pérignon at Teuscher Chocolates of Switzerland (312.943.4400). Multiple art galleries call this mall home as well, including Atlas Galleries (312.649.0999), showcasing works by masters both old and contemporary, and Lotton Gallery (312.664.6203), exhibiting stunning hand-blown glass. On the south end of the Mag Mile, the four-level Shops at North Bridge (520 N. Michigan Ave., 312.327.2300) covers nearly six city blocks and features one of the Chicago area’s largest Nordstrom department stores (312.464.1515), complete with an outstanding shoe department. Other tempting shopping stops include Candyality (312.527.1010), which features sweets of all types; home-bred Vosges Haut-Chocolat (312.644.9450); men’s grooming shop The Art of Shaving (312.527.1604); fashion accessories boutique charming charlie (312.527.0491), and electronics guru Bose (312.595.0644). The nearby Wrigley Building houses the Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop (312.337.9330), serving the most over-the-top sundaes.

Of course, there’s plenty of retail action outside the shopping centers—Michigan Avenue also beckons with flagships galore, from the always-packed Apple Store (679 N. Michigan Ave., 312.529.9500) to Levi’s (600 N. Michigan Ave., 312.642.9613), hometown brand Crate & Barrel (646 N. Michigan Ave., 312.787.5900) and Britborn Topshop (830 N. Michigan Ave., 312.280.6834).

Where to Eat Water Tower’s Mezzanine Level features gourmet food court foodlife (312.335.3663). Or kick back over comfort food at Mity Nice Bar & Grill (312.335.4745), or a meaty mouthful at quickserve hot spot M Burger (312.867.1549). Further down the Mag Mile is The Purple Pig (500 N. Michigan Ave., 312.464.1744), popular for creative, Mediterranean-inspired small plates like pork-fried almonds laced with rosemary and garlic, and a festive, communal setting. At the Tribune Tower’s street level, find ambitious Howells & Hood (312.262.5310). Named for the building’s architects, it’s a sweet spot for signature charcuterie, with a massive lineup of craft beer. Park Hyatt destination NoMI Kitchen (800 N. Michigan Ave., 312.239.4030) serves fancified seasonal fare. Afterward, grab a nightcap at its stylish, seasonal garden. Cape Cod in the classy Drake Hotel (140 E. Walton Pl., 312.787.2200) hooks diners with seafood and a signature Bookbinder soup, serving it in old-school nautical surroundings. Grab a steak or salad at the swanky Grill on the Alley (909 N. Michigan Ave., 312.255.9009), or go high-class Italian at Spiaggia (980 N. Michigan Ave., 312.280.2750), Tony Mantuano’s revamped, four-star classic (and Obama Family favorite). Mantuano’s more affordable Bar Toma (110 E. Pearson St., 312.266.3110) serves antipasti and pizza, turned from a wood-burning oven. At cocktail hour, don’t miss the views from The Signature Room at the 95th (875 N. Michigan Ave., 312.787.9596), atop the John Hancock Center.

Getting There Several bus routes run along the Mag Mile. By El, the Chicago and Grand stops on the Red Line are nearby.

History Named for its proximity to the Chicago River, this neighborhood has undergone several shifts during the city’s history. After a surge of heavy industry in the early 20th century, the area fell into severe decline in the 1960s and ’70s. However, starting in the 1980s, artists and gallery owners began moving in. Attracted by low rents and large loft spaces, they infused it with a new energy. Today it’s a booming neighborhood, with clusters of high-rise condos, top-notch restaurants, and a large concentration of galleries and home design stores.

Essentials Set in 19th-century converted brick warehouses along Superior, Huron and Chicago between Orleans and LaSalle, the galleries of the famous River North

Where It Is • History • Essentials • Where to Shop • Where to Eat • Getting There Where It Is About three miles north of the Loop, Lincoln Park is bordered by Lake Michigan to the east, the Chicago River to the west, North Avenue to the south and Diversey Parkway to the north.

History Like much of Chicago, Lincoln Park was originally a grassy, swampy suburb that was later annexed to the city. Europeans who immigrated to Chicago in large numbers during the 1820s and 1830s gravitated to areas like this for its cheap land. The first big wave of European settlers came from Germany, building some of the grandest homes in the area. The second large influx was Scottish-Irish, who gathered around a Presbyterian Seminary founded on 25 acres here in 1859. As the population increased, land values rose; today Lincoln Park home values are some of the city’s highest.

Lincoln Park boasts Lincoln Park’s proximity to an expansive green space that includes the lake and parallel the stunning Alfred stretch of parkland make it a desirable and dynamic Caldwell Lily Pond. neighborhood. Home to everyone from new college grads to upwardly mobile millionaires, Lincoln Park housing ranges from tiny walk-up apartments to high-rise condos to historic single-family homes. The park itself stretches a spacious 1,208 acres. When the weather is warm, crowds flock to the 18-mile-long Lakefront Trail to run, rollerblade or bike; walk their dogs; or join a social volleyball game on the beach. The shipshaped North Avenue Beach House (at the lakefront and North Avenue) provides concessions, restrooms, bike and rollerblade rentals, and a rooftop bar. The area is also rich in cultural attractions, including the free Lincoln Park Zoo (Cannon Drive at Fullerton Avenue, 312.742.2000) and Lincoln Park Conservatory (2391 N. Stockton Dr., 312.742.7736), and the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (2430 N. Cannon Dr., 773.755.5100), an architecturally “green” building that showcases Midwestern wildlife and nature, and a wildly popular butterfly habitat. It’s also the site of the winter edition of the esteemed Green City Market. When it’s warm, this lauded farmers’ market is held outdoors at Lincoln Park between Clark and Stockton Drive (approximately 1800 N. Clark). To get away from it all, though, there’s no better place than the hidden garden that is the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pond (Fullerton Avenue and Cannon Drive).

Where It Is • History • Essentials • Where to Shop • Where to Eat • Getting There Where It Is About four miles north of the Loop, bordered by Lake Michigan to the east, Ashland Avenue to the west, Diversey Parkway to the south and Irving Park Road to the north.

History The growth of Lakeview (named for a hotel build on the lakeshore in 1853) was due to a cholera outbreak in downtown Chicago at the time, which led residents to flee to “the country.” They liked it so much that many of them stayed on and built homes, families and businesses.

Essentials Just north of Lincoln Park, Lakeview bustles with young professionals who hit the area’s many nightspots and restaurants, from storefront Italian to cheap Mexican. Along the main byways in Lakeview—Clark Street, Lincoln Avenue and

Southport Avenue—you’ll Wrigley Field comfind shops, restaurants mands attention in and bars galore, along Lakeview, as Cubs with attractions like the fans root for the home vintage purportedly haunt- team. ed Music Box Theatre (3733 N. Southport Ave., 773.871.6604), popular for its lineup of indie/art films and midnight showings of cult classics. The northern section of Lakeview is Wrigleyville, where the focus is on the Chicago Cubs’ Wrigley Field (1060 W. Addison St., 773.404.CUBS), the second oldest baseball park in the nation. An added boon: It’s surrounded by happening sports bars to watch the game or have a beer before or after you go to the ballpark.

A stroll along charming Southport Avenue includes stops at small independently owned shops such as M2 Boutique (3527 N. Southport Ave., 773.248.9866), selling a curated selection of reasonably priced jewelry and accessories; an adjacent men’s store keeps the guys stylish too. There’s also an Anthropologie (3532 N. Southport Ave., 773.935.2693) that fits in just fine with its gifty tableware and candles and urban-but-feminine fashions. Over on Clark Street, Strange Cargo (3448 N. Clark St., 773.327.8090) has just the right mix of silly, fun and over-the-top tees, hightops and more. A bit further south, Foursided (2958 N. Clark St., 773.244.6431) features notyour-everyday greeting cards and stationery, as well as Chicago-themed items like pins, pendants and totes. On Lincoln Avenue, people love longtime scent-peddler Waxman Candles (3044 N. Lincoln Ave., 708.416.8810). For booklovers, Unabridged Books (3251 N. Broadway, 773.883.9119) is a

must-stop, while vintage- and thrift-seekers should hit up Ragstock (812 W. Belmont Ave., 773.868.9263) and Belmont Army (855 W. Belmont Ave., 773.549.1038).

Where to Eat A lot of dining here is of the casual kind, especially close to Wrigley Field where sports bars rule, such as Stretch Sports Bar and Grill (3485 N. Clark St., 773.755.3980), with drink specials and a dance floor; and HVAC Pub (3530 N. Clark St, 773.789.8864), known for its killer pizza and live bands. Vegetarians are VIPs at longtime favorite Chicago Diner (3411 N. Halsted St., 773.935.6696), while carnivores head to DMK Burger Bar (2954 N. Sheffield Ave., 773.360.8686). Uncommon Ground (3800 N. Clark St., 773.929.3680), just down the street from Wrigley Field, has a little of both, and it’s a popular brunch spot. In Boystown, cozy Wilde Bar & Restaurant (3130 N. Broadway St., 773.244.0404) pays tribute to the Irish writer with a library-like feel. Southport Grocery (3552 N. Southport Ave., 773.665.0100) is a go-to for hearty or decadent breakfasts and spot-on cupcakes.

Getting There The 22 Clark, 36 Broadway and 151 Sheridan buses all make their way through Lakeview. To Belmont Avenue, take the Red, Brown or Purple lines to the Belmont stop.

Where It Is • History • Essentials • Where to Shop • Where to Eat • Getting There Where It Is Four miles northwest of the Loop, centered at Milwaukee, Damen and North avenues.

History Founded in the mid-1800s by Eastern European immigrants, Bucktown got its name from the goats many settlers kept in their front yards. An artists’ haven in the 1970s and ‘80s, the neighborhood evokes a more affluent, fashion-forward and architecturally intriguing vibe these days. Situated south of North Avenue, Wicker Park is an ethnically diverse, but increasingly gentrified, area filled with shopping, dining and nightlife opportunities.

Division St., 773.235.8800), its updated bar bites served within a 1920s bank building, old vault still present. Meanwhile, there’s the San Francisco-inspired cool factor of Presidio (1749 N. Damen Ave., 773.697.3315) and the Trencherman (2039 W. North Ave., 773.661.1540), a casual spot dispensing pickle tots and pistou-accented farro risotto. For dessert, there’s no denying the appeal of Margie’s Candies (1960 N. Western Ave., 773.384.1035), a classic ice cream sundae staple since 1921. Want to leave the options in capable hands? Chicago Food Planet Food Tours (312.445.9948) offers tasty, not to mention informative, food and cultural walking tours.

The Damen stop on the Blue Line (direction toward O’Hare) puts you in the heart of the ’hood.

Where to Eat Food enthusiasts have no shortage of options in this ever-happening hood, from brunch treats at The Bongo Room (1470 N. Milwaukee Ave., 773.489.0690) to sweet and savory eats at James Beard award-winning Mindy Segal’s HotChocolate (1747 N. Damen Ave., 773.489.1747) to The Bristol (2152 N. Damen Ave., 773.862.5555), a must for creative American plates, like yolky raviolo in a pool of brown butter. Keep the vibe ultra-light at honky-tonk-chic taqueria Big Star (1531 N. Damen Ave., 773.680.7740), Rick Bayless’s Xoco Bistro (1471 N. Milwaukee Ave., 872.829.3821), Antique Taco (360 N. Milwaukee Ave.,
