Experience the Triangle BY ELIZABETH BRIGNAC
T
he Triangle has grown up around three hub cities: Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. Raleigh affords a family-friendly lifestyle, economic opportunity and a robust population that has grown by 60% since 2000. Many young adults choose to start their professional lives and families in Raleigh. In fact, Forbes ranked Raleigh the second-best city in the nation for business and careers in 2018. In February 2018, CardRates.com ranked Raleigh the seventh-best “City Primed for Economic Growth and Opportunity,” and, in November 2018, the same site ranked Raleigh as the third-best U.S. city in terms of economic potential for recent college graduates. Raleigh offers stable employment, affordable housing, and opportunities to explore and have fun. North Carolina’s fifth-largest city, Durham, offers a diverse, eclectic and artistic atmosphere, which includes the renovated American Tobacco Historic District. The area’s repurposed tobacco warehouses accommodate shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. Downtown Durham claims a bountiful farmers market that opens on Saturdays and is known for its outstanding restaurants, food trucks and breweries. Just 2 miles northwest of downtown, Duke University sprawls across 8,691 acres of land and includes beautiful Sarah P. Duke Gardens, which are free for public enjoyment. According to the city’s most recent resident satisfaction survey, four out of five citizens feel that Durham is a good-to-excellent place to live.

A college town through and through, Chapel Hill is known for providing academic opportunities, historic homes and a variety of coffee shops, cafes and pubs — among other university-town amenities. UNC-Chapel Hill claims the No. 1 spot on Kiplinger’s 2018 list of campuses offering the “Best Values in Public Colleges,” and the university routinely appears on lists of the most beautiful college campuses in America. Chapel Hill residents enjoy the benefits of UNC-Chapel Hill’s historic campus and vibrant intellectual atmosphere, as well as opportunities to attend concerts, exhibitions, lectures and theatrical performances at venues such as the Paul Green PlayMakers’ Repertory Company. The Triangle is much more than these three core cities, however. It is made up of more than a dozen smaller towns, each of which entices newcomers to explore its distinctive character and charm. Hillsborough, Wake Forest and Apex proudly maintain historic districts lined with storefronts and cafes. Morrisville accommodates large international populations. Cary offers more than 30 public parks and 70 miles of greenway space. Holly Springs and Zebulon take pride in accommodating their own minor league baseball teams (see the Sports and Fitness section for more information on those). Want to learn more? Get to know the cities and towns that make up the Triangle as you explore each town here and throughout this issue.

The small town of Fuquay became famous in the 19th century for its mineral spring, which was rumored to heal ailments. Visitors can still sample the famous spring water at Fuquay Mineral Spring Park. Named after French Revolutionary War veteran William Fuquay, who moved his family to the site, Fuquay incorporated in 1909 and joined the neighboring community of Varina in 1963 to become Fuquay-Varina. NCMALearn Expands Reach Via Virtual Art Education Museum’s relaunched website makes art education resources more accessible to parents, teachers and students
T
he North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh houses the largest Rodin collection between Philadelphia and the West Coast, along with an impressive selection of European, African and American art. So it’s no surprise that the museum saw over 617,000 visitors in 2018. What might surprise you, however, is that the museum’s offerings are now more accessible than ever to virtual visitors, thanks to the NCMALearn program. The museum’s art education program was first launched in 2005 as ArtNC. In 2017, the museum relaunched the program with its new name and website: NCMALearn and learn.ncartmuseum.org.

EXPANDING REACH The NCMALearn website showcases more than 200 of the museum’s works of art. The site also provides lesson plans developed to meet North Carolina curriculum standards. Lesson plans are supported with additional resources, such as high-resolution images, activities and videos. Coordinator of School and Teacher Programs Jill Taylor says the NCMALearn lesson plans focus on more than art education. “They help parents, teachers and students connect art with other disciplines such as STEM, reading and writing,” Taylor says.
carolinaparent.com
The heart of the NCMALearn program is a searchable database of 200 works from the NCMA’s permanent collection. The database is searchable by art medium, region and concepts, such as family, communication or collaboration. Each work of art is accompanied by artist pages, lesson plans, Quick Tip topics and/or maker videos. “Some of the videos are by artists themselves, talking about their work,” Taylor says. “And some of the artists are North Carolina artists, so kids can learn more about artists who live in their communities. We even have some videos about the process of making art.”

BY CHRISTA HOGAN
ARTS AND CULTURE In addition to the NCMALearn site, the museum is pioneering high-definition videoconferencing that deepens students’ learning before museum visits and provides a virtual field trip experience. In partnership with North Carolina Virtual Public School, the NCMA teaches more than 600 North Carolina students remotely each year. ACCESSIBILITY FOR ALL Features like virtual field trips and the NCMALearn program are part of the museum’s mission to be accessible to every North Carolinian. “We want to find ways to connect with people who can’t come here in person,”
Taylor says. “We also want to provide a way for visitors to continue a relationship with the museum after a visit.” Taylor points out that while the NCMALearn program reaches more than 24,000 educators annually through workshops, distance education and teacher training, the NCMALearn resources are also great for parents. Taylor points to the site’s Quick Tips section as a way for parents to offer their children bite-sized ideas and activities that are related to works of art. “Quick Tips might be useful after families have visited the museum and want to follow up on the experience with their kids,” Taylor says. “The Works of Art section
might also help visitors decide ahead of time and plan what they want to see.” For parents and teachers interested in getting their schools involved in the NCMALearn program, Taylor recommends that parents communicate with their schools' administrators to help arrange those programs. “Parents can play a great role in making sure teachers are aware of the NCMALearn site and opportunities,” Taylor says. “We do a lot of work to get information to teachers, but word-of-mouth through parents is even more helpful.” Christa Hogan is a local freelance writer and mom to three boys.

Collaborative Learning Spaces Triangle schools are redesigning classrooms to accommodate a student-centered environment BY MICK SCHULTE
Y
ou may remember being told by your childhood teachers to “sit still” in upright, rigid chairs attached to desks that were lined up in neat rows. How things have changed! These days, you might not recognize what Sherwood Githens Middle School in Durham calls a sixth grade language arts classroom. There’s a couch, beanbag chairs, inflatable seats and long tables where students sit beside each other. Evette Clark-Rawls’ nonlinear classroom is a stark contrast to the traditional learning environment today's parents may recall. Many educators agree that modern-day classrooms are not always where students learn from a teacher. Instead, they often serve as a collaborative environment in which students are actively engaged in what and how they learn. More and more Triangle schools are transforming the

furniture and design of their classrooms to fit this student-centered learning philosophy. “The movement over the last 10 years to have more open learning spaces not only reflects how the students want to learn, but also what the workplace demands,” says Barbara Berry, media coordinator at Sherwood Githens Middle School. “The idea of the corner office is not the working structure of today. I think now we’re trying to look at how our school’s architecture supports that goal of collaboration.” Beyond implementation of a collaborative environment, the student-centered approach recommends that schools provide comfort for individual learners. This often involves movement and variety. “Most adults don’t sit in hard, plastic chairs at work all day. Why should kids?” asks Hannah Elly, part owner of

Hillsborough-based Nugget, a company that provides flexible furniture to many Triangle area schools. “We know children can learn better if they are comfortable. They should be able to make the same bodily adjustments that adults get to make all day.” STUDENT-CENTERED LEARNING APPROACH SHOULD DETERMINE CLASSROOM DESIGN According to the book “Blueprint for Tomorrow: Redesigning Schools for Student-Centered Learning” by Prakash Nair (Harvard Education Press, 2014), the traditional school setting many parents visualize was built to model an assembly line. Students were prepped to enter the manufacturing-based economy by learning how to follow instructions from a person in charge, without offering any input.
EDUCATION Nair points out that progressive educators pushed back against this form of teaching, even when it started. Pioneers like Maria Montessori and John Dewey believed children should have a say in the learning process and develop skills to solve a variety of real-life problems. Many schools in the Triangle, including The Raleigh School, were built on this progressive philosophical foundation. “Our classrooms are centered around collaborative work with a focus on STEM activities and project-based learning,” says Mary Golden, director of school programs at The Raleigh School. “In order to help our kids and educators succeed in collaboration, we need the right setting. We believe furniture is part of the foundation of classroom management.” Keith Sawyer, the Morgan Distinguished Professor in Educational Innovations at UNC-Chapel Hill, advises older schools with more traditional teaching methods to focus on the type of education they offer first, and the infrastructure adaptations will naturally follow.
youngest learners that there are certain times when it’s important to sit still.” Ravenscroft School in Raleigh has also embraced flexible seating and allows students to collaborate on how it is used and managed in the classroom. “We have many options, including accordion seats, standing desks, ergo stools, stability balls and Nuggets,” says Crystal Keefe, a fourth-grade teacher at Ravenscroft School. “The students take ownership for how the seating will be approached. They brainstorm in groups what the expectations are for the seating and what the consequences will be if it is used incorrectly. This eliminates any chaos that could come from the furniture.”
“My best recommendation is to start by changing your pedagogy to be research-based, for better student-learning outcomes,” Sawyer says. “Once the new pedagogy has proven to be effective, then it will be increasingly obvious that the classroom design and furniture are getting in the way of effective learning.” VERSATILITY AND MOVEMENT FOR BETTER LEARNING Megan Teis’ son attends The Studio School of Durham, where students move from sitting on large area rugs on the floor, to couches, to chairs at group tables, to standing. “They also spend more than an hour outdoors each day and do more than two hours of environmental exploration every other Wednesday,” Teis says. She believes this emphasis on movement has helped her high-energy son during his first year of elementary school. “I do feel that if he were in a more traditional environment, I’d have gotten a report on this wiggly behavior, or his inability to sit still,” Teis says. “The Studio School has really welcomed the ‘wiggles’ while also teaching even the

be [to add] more variety,” says Kendyl Bethune, a seventh-grade math teacher at Sherwood Githens Middle School. “If I had all the resources I could dream of, it would be very cozy, almost like a coffee shop.” Despite falling short of her ideal setting, Bethune has found ways to accommodate a student-centered learning style through the “hunt and gather” method. She has collected a wide variety of chairs and tables from the school’s storage area and from other teachers, but most of the furnishings came via donations made through DonorsChoose.org, a website dedicated to helping public schools achieve success by allowing teachers to crowdsource for classroom materials, including flexible seating. “I’m hoping to collect donations for a few inflatable chairs, wobble seats and exercise bands because the students love them and I can see the benefits they bring to the classroom,” Bethune says. While individual teachers work hard to collect donations, Sawyer believes schools should start shifting more resources toward flexible furniture and collaborative design. “School budgets are limited, and there are almost never funds to buy new furniture,” he says. “However, if a new school is being built, then that’s the perfect opportunity to buy furniture that’s aligned with the way children learn today. If you’re not building a new school anytime soon, I recommend choosing one room to reconfigure where a projectbased learning method is being used.” As those old-fashioned, rigid desks become relics of traditional schools, teachers like Maryanne Ross at Durham’s Kestrel Heights Charter School adapt their classrooms to the ever-changing needs of students. “Each year I keep adding to my collection of furniture and my students are respectful of what I do in my classroom because I do it for them — to help them grow, be comfortable, and be the best they can be.”

Adventures in Nature Climb, fly and paddle your way through some of the Triangle’s greatest adventures

ver the course of a few weeks, our family has floated, climbed and soared our way through the gorgeous Carolina outdoors. And we did it all without traveling more than 35 minutes from our Raleigh home. Businesses throughout the Triangle offer opportunities to invest in adventure. You can find an activity that will fit every family type, age and skill level. Be ready for heart-pumping, adrenaline-rushing fun, because these adventures will change the way you see the world. The only question is: Which one will your family try first?
TreeRunner Raleigh Adventure Park 12804 Norwood Rd., Raleigh treerunnerraleigh.com Halfway between Raleigh and Durham, nestled on the David R. Kahn Jewish Community Campus, 70 obstacles and zip lines zigzag throughout forested land, offering a wide variety of challenges and adventures. Each day at TreeRunner Raleigh Adventure Park starts with a guided safety training session to help guests feel confident using their harness and clipping mechanisms. The way these

magnetic mechanisms work ensures that only one line can be unattached at any given time, so guests are always safely harnessed as they move about the trees. After training, guests are free to climb the cargo rope to the main deck. From there, they can choose one of seven routes, categorized by difficulty. A friendly park guide is always on the main deck to help guests decide which course to try based on their experience, skill level and, most importantly, what they enjoy doing. There are three beginner routes, two intermediate routes and two expert routes. The park requires that guests finish a beginner route before moving on to an intermediate course, and finish an intermediate course before moving on to the expert route. You’ll hear great music and encouraging instructions throughout the park. Even the youngest adventurers (ages 4-7) can experience their own course a little closer to the ground. WHY YOU WILL LOVE IT: You can make the day your own! Even the most adventurous and confident teens can be humbled by the difficult courses, while kids who may be a little more cautious carolinaparent.com
will experience joy and a self-confidence boost while accomplishing the beginning and intermediate courses.
Go Ape! Blue Jay Point County Park 3200 Pleasant Union Church Rd., Raleigh goape.com/locations/north-carolina “Always stay attached!” The park’s slogan not only reminds guests to physically stay clipped in throughout the park, but also indirectly reminds them that this this is a place where their bond as a family and their attachment to nature can grow. Go Ape! has been thrilling families in the Triangle since 2015. The park offers two very distinct opportunities to accommodate multiple skill levels. Treetop Journey introduces the high ropes experience to all ages. Guests choose from two routes on one platform. In both, guests are attached to a continuous wire that leads them through obstacles that culminate in a zip line. Because of this constant attachment, climbers don’t need to worry about clipping on or off — they can just concentrate on the fun of traipsing through the trees. Ages 10 and older are invited to try the Treetop Adventure, a journey through
FAMILY FUN the tops of the forest canopy. After training, participants are encouraged to go through the next five stations at their own pace. Each course starts with a gated station that has a ladder leading up to the trees, and ends with an exhilarating ride down a zip line. WHY YOU WILL LOVE IT: The absolute vastness of the forest makes you forget that you are just a short drive from the hustle and bustle of a big city.
Triangle Skydiving Center 480 Airport Rd., Suite 200, Louisburg triangleskydiving.com What is North Carolina known for if not for its beautiful blue skies? And what better way to show your sense of adventure than by sailing through the blue with nothing but a parachute to glide you to the green grass below? Don’t be shy to admit if you’re one of the many people who think, “Well, skydiving is something I wanted to do before I had kids.” You’re not alone. Jumping out of a plane seems risky. But when it comes down to it, it is — statistically speaking — safe. According to Skydiving.com, you are more likely to be killed by a bee, dog or lightning than you are in a skydiving incident. Is it really a family adventure? Absolutely! And although potential skydivers must be age 18 to jump, skydiving may be one of the most accommodating adventures multigenerational families could consider. Triangle Skydiving Center not only accommodates adults of all ages, it also welcomes adventure-seekers with mobility issues. Recently, Triangle Skydiving Center hosted a family whose son lost the use of his legs in a car accident. Employees say that he landed with his tandem jumper with exhilaration and achievement on his face — and there wasn’t a dry eye on the field. Imagine surprising your high school graduate with a skydiving trip. Or maybe, instead of buying your college graduate a new watch, you could give him the sky and encourage him, symbolically, to reach for it and live life with his arms wide open.
Paddle Creek paddlecreeknc.com Multiple locations near Falls Lake and the Neuse River A well-known staple for local nature lovers, Paddle Creek offers a wide variety of ways to float freely through the Triangle’s hidden waterways. Among other options, customers can choose the “Quick Trip,” in which the river is happy to do the work for you, a half-day Neuse River excursion, or an exploration of Robertson Millpond Preserve’s sunken forest. Paddle Creek provides transportation for its customers to or from their car and will set them up in the water with their personal flotation device and a paddle board, or a solo or tandem kayak. The
quick trip is an ideal family adventure. It’s long enough for families to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature and possibly see deer, osprey, owls, beavers and muskrats, and it is short and simple enough that they can’t make a wrong turn. WHY YOU WILL LOVE IT: Rocked gently by the flow of the river and surrounded completely by nature, you and your family will want to escape to the sanctuary of the water time and again. Mandy Howard is a freelance writer and mother of three in Raleigh who literally took a leap of faith to experience these adventures with her kids for the purpose of writing this article.

Carolina Children’s Museum Coming to Holly Springs
T
he Carolina Children’s Museum is on its way to becoming a reality in Holly Springs. Upon moving to the area with her husband and son in 2014, museum founder Kirsten Pierce recognized a need for an indoor-outdoor, naturefocused facility in rapidly-growing southwestern Wake County where children could play and explore. The museum's mission statement establishes that its overall goal is “to nurture educational connections between children, their families, the community and the environment through interactive and hands-on play.” Proponents of the museum hope to educate children about their local ecosystems. Outdoor exhibits will
utilize naturally occurring elements in North Carolina’s landscape to create educational spaces that children can explore through play. Indoor exhibits would simulate the outdoor environment and teach children about North Carolina’s landscape, seasons and uniqueness through hands-on learning. Pierce emphasizes that unscripted play and outdoor exploration are crucial elements in healthy child development, and cites these as opportunities that today’s children sometimes lack in what she perceives to be a structured, activity-oriented world. “We encourage children to reach their full potential as citizens by fostering understanding of positive
environmental actions that have global impact,” she says. In 2018, the organization focused on community outreach and gaining nonprofit status. Its goals for 2019 include finding the right land on which to build the museum, and expanding the museum’s capital fundraising campaign. To learn more about the museum and its upcoming fundraising events, visit carolinachildrensmuseum.org.

Having a Ball, for Less Cut the cost of Triangle-based pro sports tickets with family or group discounts BY KURT DUSTERBERG
F
or many families, there is no better experience than gathering the gang to cheer on your favorite team. No matter what sport your brood loves, there’s something special about coming together in full-throated support to root, root, root for the home team. The price of attending a game, however, can make many families think twice. Attending a major league sporting event can cost a family of four several hundred dollars after paying for parking, tickets, concessions and merchandise. But there are ways to keep those prices in check. Most teams offer family discounts on tickets, including incentives like food vouchers or discounts on merchandise. Keep in mind that tickets
to minor league sporting events cost just a fraction of major league ticket prices, making it easy to keep the tab under $100 for a family of four. Plus, in-game entertainment at the lower levels of professional sports is geared toward families, and the smaller venues get everyone closer to the action. Families aren’t the only ones who can get a break on prices. Most sports teams offer discounts for groups of 10 or more. Youth sports teams, in particular, can take advantage of affordably priced outings. One more tip: Don’t forget about college sports. UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University and Duke University play NCAA Division I athletics, the highest level of college sports. There’s more to choose from than high-profile football and
basketball programs. Baseball, softball, volleyball and lacrosse are just some of the sports that are affordable to attend. CAROLINA HURRICANES The Canes Fam Value Packs are among the featured discounts offered by the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, and they offer flexibility in both price and amount of tickets at PNC Arena in Raleigh. There are a designated number of Canes Fam Nights each season for which fans can purchase from two to eight seats. Per-ticket prices range from $32.50 in the upper level to $75 in the lower level. And the Hurricanes will give you a head start at the concession stand with a $10 food and drink credit for each ticket

OUT-OF-TOWN PRO SPORTS OPTIONS Many people recognize the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets and the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes — North Carolina’s three major league sports franchises. But across the state, there are plenty of other professional teams stocked with athletes waiting for a chance at the big time. So if you’re out of town with a free evening, consider taking in a game in another North Carolina city. You can explore a new stadium or arena, watch a future star athlete and maybe splurge for that hat with the cool team logo. If you’re on the road with your children’s club or travel sports team, contact the team’s ticket office ahead of time. They might offer some added incentives for a night of fun at the game. Here are some of the places you can find pro teams:
DURHAM BULLS No matter what kind of group you’re bringing to the ballpark, the Durham Bulls have you covered. Gather a sports team, host a birthday party or bring the family together for a campout. Various packages include flexible seating, scoreboard recognition and on-field experiences at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham. Wool E. Bull’s Allscripts All-Stars kids club is open to children ages 4-14. A free membership includes a ticket voucher for each child, while a $25 membership includes a voucher for four games, a Durham Bulls hat and other perks. The Bulls, the top minor league affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, will host five Bark in the Park games this summer. Tickets cost $9 and dogs are admitted for $5. Need a bigger fix of America’s pastime? The Bulls also have 8-, 9- and 10-game discounted plans with built-in attractions. Get a postgame fireworks package, choose discount food nights or select a familyfriendly calendar of Thursday-only games. Learn more at milb.com/durham.
Minor League Baseball Minor league baseball is a staple of summertime in towns across America, with 256 teams affiliated with Major League Baseball. Most teams play in modern stadiums with lots of amenities and in-game family entertainment. If you’re away from the Triangle, you can check out nine other teams: AAA • Charlotte Knights CLASS A-ADVANCED • Down East Wood Ducks (Kinston) • Fayetteville Woodpeckers • Winston-Salem Dash
CAROLINA MUDCATS The Carolina Mudcats play in Zebulon. Five County Stadium’s cozy setting is perfect if you want to be close to the action of the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Mudcats offer five-game minipacks that allow fans to choose from 20 of the team’s top promotional nights. Twoperson packs ($65-$85) and four-person packs ($60-80) offer a significant savings on individual game tickets. Can’t make it to a game on your ticket package? You can exchange any unused tickets for games later in the season.

Many of the Checkers

players spend time on the Hurricanes’ roster throughout the season. Tickets at Bojangles Coliseum start at $12. United Soccer League Charlotte Independence plays soccer in the United Soccer League, and is a rival of North Carolina FC. Home games take place at the Sportsplex at Matthews with tickets priced at $15 and up. Major League Lacrosse The Queen City is home to the Charlotte Hounds, a Major League Lacrosse franchise. They play eight home games from June through September at American Legion Memorial Stadium with tickets available for $10. Southern Professional Hockey League The Fayetteville Marksmen play in the Southern Professional Hockey League, an independent minor league. Their season runs from mid-October through early April at Crown Coliseum. Tickets start at $7. Federal Hockey League The Carolina Thunderbirds play in the unaffiliated Federal Hockey League at The Annex at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, where tickets start at $9. National Arena League Remember arena football? The Carolina Cobras play the indoor version of the game. They are part of the National Arena League, with home games April 20-July 13 at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. Most home games are on Saturdays. Family 4-Packs include four tickets, four hot dogs and four soft drinks for $28.75 per ticket. NBA Development The Greensboro Swarm basketball team is the development squad for the NBA’s Hornets, providing players directly to the major league team. The 2,100-seat Fieldhouse at the Coliseum Complex, which opened in 2016, hosts 24 home games in the NBA’s G League from November through March. Tickets start at $9.

Birthday party packages include plenty of perks for the kids, and group ticket packages for 20 or more include parking and merchandise discounts. Learn more at milb.com/carolina-mudcats. HOLLY SPRINGS SALAMANDERS Holly Springs Salamanders baseball has all the appeal of a pro game, but the team is part of a collegiate summer league that features some of the top players from around the country. The Salamanders play in 1,800-seat Ting Park in Holly Springs. Ticket packages feature three, five-game plans that offer plenty of bang for your buck. For $80.45 per person, fans receive admission, all-you-can-eat vouchers for each game and a Salamanders hat or T-shirt. Families interested in paying for a full season will pay $241.80 per person. Take advantage of the all-you-can-eat program at any home game for $15 per
person when you bring a group of 10 more. Learn more at salamandersbaseball.com. NORTH CAROLINA FC AND NC COURAGE If soccer is your sport, North Carolina Football Club (men) and NC Courage (women) offer exciting professional action at Cary’s WakeMed Soccer Park.
Each team offers a flex plan that includes 12 ticket vouchers that can be redeemed for any regular season game in any combination. Ticket packages range from $149-$479 for the 2019 season. Each team’s season runs from March through October. Birthday and youth team parties come with pizza, drinks, cake and a gift for the kids. Both teams offer packages for adult parties, too. Guests have access to the Far Post Pavilion, where North Carolina FC or NC Courage cover the first round of drinks. Learn more at northcarolinafc.com and nccourage.com. Here’s a list of community health centers located across the Triangle. DURHAM COUNTY
Community Health Centers in the Triangle BY MAUREEN CHURCHILL
C
ommunity health centers are nonprofit, community-based and patient-directed health organizations. They provide high quality, affordable and comprehensive medical care, often in impoverished areas. Their goal is to improve the general health of their patients. They do this by offering a variety of services under one roof. These can include: • Primary medical care, including pediatrics • Dental care • Behavioral and mental health care • Substance abuse counseling • Pharmacy and medication assistance programs • Case management • Health education • Health insurance enrollment assistance • Nutrition counseling • Interpretation • Transportation • Women, Infant and Children (WIC) Food and Nutrition programs Ben Money, the CEO and president of the North Carolina Community Health Care Association, says he believes many people think community health centers are exclusively for low-income families. This is not true, he says. Anyone can receive care at a community health center, even people who have medical insurance. “Community health care facilities have a focus on high-quality care with boardcertified providers,” Money says. “The neat
50
The Triangle Go-To Guide 2019-20
|
thing is that they are operating in a really holistic way.” At these centers, primary care providers, pharmacists and counselors are together in the same building so they can collaborate and coordinate care for their patients. If a doctor identifies a new health issue during a visit, services that focus on that issue may also be available. Community health centers receive federal funding to help subsidize the fees associated with their services. Those fees can be adjusted on a sliding scale based on a patient’s ability to pay. Eligibility for the sliding fee scales are based on income and the number of people in a patient’s household, according to federal poverty guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Many community health centers also have access to other programs that can help patients manage costs. In order to determine qualifications for reduced rates, patients need to contact the specific community health center they are planning to visit. Unfortunately, this funding is not guaranteed. Community health centers realize greater economic stability by increasing the number of patients who have private insurance, or with patients who are covered by Medicare and Medicaid. Bringing those patients into a community health center is challenging because many people don’t know these facilities exist. Community health centers aren’t all run by the same organization, nor do they share a logo, so people often have a difficult time identifying them.

Health Priorities for Wake County
Wake County is working hard to help its residents lead healthier lives. In early 2019, it conducted the Community Health Needs Assessment Survey to determine residents’ most pressing health priorities for the next three years. This survey is conducted every three years and overseen by more than 60 partners from
across the community, including medical, government, business and faith-based organizations. This year, the county collected 2,500 resident responses. A final report was due to be released in mid-April but had not been published as of press time. Visit wakegov.com/wellbeing for information and updates.
In 2017, over half a million patients sought assistance at a community health center in North Carolina. SOURCE: North Carolina Health News – Aug. 3, 2017

THE MAGNET
ADVANTAGE
Wake County’s award-winning magnet schools create well-rounded students by challenging them with programs tailored to their strengths and exposing them to new experiences. Innovative and pioneering programs encourage students to think creatively and analytically to solve problems, while diverse student body populations enable students to explore their world from a different perspective. Wake County magnet schools provide students the tools they need to see things differently. We invite you to explore our magnet themes as well as our early college and year-round schools to find those that best meet the unique strengths and interests of your child.
