WAKE COUNTY
Experience the Triangle More than a dozen towns surround the bustling cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill — each one enticing newcomers with its own unique character. Hillsborough, Wake Forest and Apex delight residents with charming historic districts lined with centuriesold buildings and quaint storefronts that harken back to a simpler time. Morrisville accommodates a large international population, and Holly Springs and Zebulon take pride in having their own professional baseball teams. Strengthened by its CardRates.com “2018 Cities Primed for Economic Growth and Opportunity” No. 7 ranking — and an unemployment rate well below the national average — Raleigh boasts a reputation as a robust career destination. Just 3 miles west of the downtown district, North Carolina State University ranks ninth on Kiplinger’s 2018 list of campuses with the “Best Values in Public Colleges.” North Carolina’s fifth-largest city, Durham, boasts the elegantly renovated American Tobacco Historic District, which accommodates shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. Just 2 miles northwest of downtown, Duke University sprawls across 8,690 acres of land that includes the majestic Duke Forest. This prestigious private school ranked ninth on U.S. News and World Report’s 2018 Best Colleges list of national universities. And according to the city’s most recent resident satisfaction survey, four out of five feel Durham is a good-to-excellent place to live. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill claims the No. 1 spot on Kiplinger’s 2018 list of campuses with the “Best Values in Public Colleges,” and Cary ranked 10th in 2017 among the “30 Safest Cities to Raise a Child,” according to SafeWise, a website that tracks information on home security systems and safety. Ting Park (previously North Main Athletic Complex) in Holly Springs was named “Public Park of the Year” by Tennis Industry magazine in January 2017. Newcomers to the Triangle undoubtedly have many choices for where to establish their roots. On the next few pages, explore the unique towns and cities Triangle residents call home, including information about some of the region’s most popular suburbs.

Home Sweet Home A guide to the Triangle’s most popular suburbs BY MICHELE JONCZAK
A
ccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, Raleigh ranked 14th in 2017 among the country’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas. Perhaps because of that growth and recognition, more families are choosing to settle in Raleigh’s nearby suburbs. Julie Fielding, a real estate agent with Nina Parker Realty Group in Apex, says people are moving to Triangle suburbs primarily because of location. “They can be close to work, whether that’s in downtown Raleigh or Durham, Research Triangle Park, at a hospital or at a university,” she says. Big-city amenities are easily accessible, but homeowners can take refuge in a small town, where they can experience a true sense of community. Here are some of the most popular suburbs Triangle newcomers are calling home.
Apex Thanks to a 23-year population boom, Apex has grown by 28 percent since 1995, increasing from 5,000 residents to around 50,000 in 2018. In 2015, Money magazine named Apex its No. 1 small town in America, which consequently attracted new residents, making it not as small of a town as it used to be. The Halle Cultural Arts Center, located in the bustling historic downtown district, features concerts, movies, exhibits and more. Apexers have easy access to numerous parks, a variety of restaurants, I-540, Raleigh and Durham.
Cary Once a small-town suburb, Cary has graduated to city size with a population of more than 162,000. Newcomers still find it a refuge from big-city life, since it claims a quaint, historic downtown, its popular Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival and hometown parades. Residents also like having access to Cary’s large

shopping centers — soon to include an IKEA and Wegmans Food Market.
Fuquay-Varina Fuquay-Varina, located 15 miles south of Raleigh, has grown by 42.2 percent since 2009, bringing its number of residents to 25,000 based on the latest U.S. census. It boasts two downtown areas in reflection of what used to be separate towns. Both feature shops, restaurants and annual festivals. I-540 makes it possible for residents to quickly travel to RTP and downtown Raleigh.
Holly Springs Many families are choosing to settle in Holly Springs, based on a 33 percent growth rate since 2009 and an estimated 37,000 residents in 2018. RTP and downtown Raleigh are easily accessible via I-540 and, in 2013, Bloomberg Businessweek named Holly Springs “The Best Place in North Carolina to Raise Kids.”

Morrisville
Knightdale has experienced an impressive 28 percent growth rate over the past 10 years, bringing its population to nearly 17,000 in 2018. Stefanie and Mark Despagni, who moved there in the fall of 2016, were drawn to its small-town feel, proximity to downtown Raleigh (less than 15 miles away) and low cost of living. The parks and recreation options were added bonuses.
Morrisville is the closest town to RTP — one of the largest research parks in the world — so it makes sense that many newcomers employed by companies in the park are choosing to make Morrisville their home. The 2015 U.S. Census showed the population at 23,699, a 31 percent increase since 2009. Residents have access to walking and cycling trails, downtown festivals and
Knightdale residents will have even more to enjoy in the near future, according to Jonas Silver, public information officer for the Town of Knightdale. The 73-acre Knightdale Station Park just started phase three of construction, which will add a permanent amphitheater, veterans memorial, restaurants and local shops. In addition, the Mingo Creek extension will connect Knightdale Station Park to Mingo Creek Park, the Neuse River Trail and, ultimately, the Capital Area Greenway System.
Since 2009, Rolesville has quadrupled in size from 2,000 to an estimated 8,000 residents. Once known for farming, this northeastern Wake County town offers three parks, athletic programs and classes through the town’s parks and recreation department, town events and more.
Wake Forest With nearly 45,000 residents predicted for 2018, the quaint town of Wake Forest has experienced a 32 percent growth over the past 10 years. Its proximity to downtown Raleigh attracts new residents who enjoy Wake Forest’s annual festivals and historic downtown district. Michele Jonczak, a freelance writer in Raleigh, is mom to two boys and a girl.

❱ EDUCATION Beyond the Public Library
Beyond the Public Library Alternative options for book lovers in the Triangle BY MAUREEN CHURCHILL
Below photo of Book Harvest taken by Maureen Churchill; top right photo of Apex Little Free Library taken by Alan Estep
L
ooking for new ways and places — in addition to the public library — to expose your children to books? Consider checking out some of these unique opportunities that can be found right here in the Triangle.
James B. Hunt Jr. Library at NCSU 1070 Partners Way, Raleigh 919-515-7110 lib.ncsu.edu/huntlibrary The James B. Hunt Jr. Library, built in 2013 on North Carolina State University’s Centennial Campus, has been voted one of the “10 most amazing college libraries in the U.S.,” according to College Raptor, a website dedicated to helping prospective students choose a college. As soon as you enter, watch through a floor-to-ceiling glass wall as the library’s bookBot, a robotic book delivery system, retrieves one of two million books from a climate-controlled storage area.
The library’s bold colors, touchable technology and multitude of modern seating options make visiting it a truly unique experience that will spark the imagination of all who visit. For an added treat, pack a lunch for a picnic outside on the fifth-floor Skyline Terrace while you enjoy expansive views of the NCSU campus. The Hunt Library offers free walk-in tours every Friday at 3:30 p.m. and on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. Check the website to confirm tour dates.
Little Free Libraries Various locations 919-560-0188 (English) 919-560-0157 (Spanish) littlefreelibrary.org Little Free Libraries have been gaining popularity since their inception in 2009. These small structures are built to house a collection of books that operate under the motto: “Take a book, return a book.” Create a book treasure hunt by checking locations registered at littlefreelibrary.org, then plan a fun route to follow. Donate books from home that your family has read and no longer needs so you can swap them out for something new — all while exploring the town in which the Little Free Library is located. Visit the site's blog to locate Little Free Libraries that focus on a theme, like Marvel, as well.
Durham County Library Bookmobile Makes various stops durhamcountylibrary.org/ services/bookmobile The Durham County Library bookmobile covers more than 200 miles during the six days it operates each week, and makes a limited number of public stops. It carries books and movies for children and adults in both English and Spanish. A valid library card is required to check out books, and you can register for one for free on the bookmobile. Books checked out there can be returned to any library location in Durham County. During 2018, Durham County plans to add a second bookmobile to service even more locations. Call before heading out to a stop to ensure it will be there. Visit the website to see the bookmobile’s monthly schedule.
Book Harvest 2501 University Dr., Durham 252-497-BOOK bookharvestnc.org Donate new or used books to help stock the shelves at one of Book Harvest’s 50 community book banks across the Triangle. Each week, children harvest 2,000 free books from these locations, which are listed on bookharvestnc.org. Help organize donations at one of the locations or bring your kids to experience carolinaparent.com

an “open book sort,” which is available to volunteers of all ages (volunteers under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult) and held on the second Saturday and fourth Tuesday of every month, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Drop-ins are welcome, and there is no need to register in advance.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and SmartStart imaginationlibrary.com Durham’s Partnership for Children: 919-403-6960 Orange County Partnership for Young Children: 919-967-9091 Wake County SmartStart: 919-851-9550 Imagination Library has partnered with SmartStart to send free books to the homes of North Carolina children up to age 5. Participants receive one new book each month to help them build a strong foundation in reading before entering kindergarten. Visit the website for details and to find the program nearest you. A lifelong lover of books, Maureen Churchill works outside the home full-time and writes a blog titled, “Searching for Balance,” at carolinaparent.com. A wife, mother and avid reader, she enjoys exploring the Triangle area looking for unique activities to share with her family.

A Triangle Bucket List for Families
W
e all know the concept of a bucket list — things you must do before you “kick the bucket.” These lists often include skydiving, mountain climbing and, if you’re Tim McGraw, riding a bull named Fumanchu for 2.7 seconds. These activities sound great, but may not be easy to plan with young kids or strollers in tow. So, here we humbly present a Triangle Bucket List for Families. You simply have not lived (in the Triangle with a family, at least) until you’ve checked off a few of these items.

1. Play at Pullen Park. “Iconic.” That is the word Raleigh native and mom of two Amy Moreau uses to describe a day at Pullen Park in Raleigh. “Especially the train. When my kids were younger, there was just something about that train ride at Pullen that made you feel
lucky to live in Raleigh,” she says. A playground, picnic shelters, concessions and the 1911 Gustav A. Dentzel carousel make this park a “can’t miss” destination. raleighnc.gov/parks (search for "Pullen Park")

4. See stars at Morehead Planetarium & Science Center. Take a trip to UNC-
trails to butterfly houses, and climbing trees to learning about the stars, this Durham museum has something for everyone. Better yet, consider putting a museum membership on your bucket list. With plenty of indoor and outdoor exhibits, you’ll get your money’s worth the whole year through. lifeandscience.org
3. Take a Hike! William B. Umstead State Park is just one of many fantastic state parks in the Triangle. Throw some sunscreen and water bottles in a backpack and find a trail with the right

Not much else says spring in the Triangle like picking strawberries with your family. Many local farms specialize in providing a perfect berry-picking experience by offering additional activities. carolinaparent.com/cp/where-topick-strawberries-in-the-triangle
This may not be something native Raleighites grew up with, but a Stanley Cup trophy bearing the Carolina Hurricanes’ name and an abundance of special family deals is a pretty good indication that Raleigh has fully embraced all things Caniac. nhl.com/hurricanes
9. Pick a pumpkin at Hill Ridge Farms. While spring may be all about berry picking, fall is when pumpkins take the spotlight. There are many fantastic places in the Triangle to grab a gourd or two, but Hill Ridge

10. Watch a movie under moonlight. While most areas of the country said goodbye to outdoor movie experiences when drive-ins went out of vogue, the Triangle boasts several venues that still honor this tradition. Raleigh native Brian Williams, a father of active twin boys, advises that once you find your theater of choice, “Scope out the trees because bringing a hammock makes it especially cool.” carolinaparent.com/cp/triangle-summermovie-deals-for-families
11. Pick a parade. Raleigh’s parades, especially for Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day, are perfect examples of how the Triangle region maintains a small-town ambiance with big-city opportunities. On parade day, you’ll find yourself immersed in culture, all with affordable and attainable parking. grma.org/christmas-parade, raleighstpats.org 12. Enjoy turkey legs and pig races. Oh, yes … all Triangle families must visit Raleigh’s fairgrounds for the North Carolina State Fair in October and the Got to Be NC Festival in May. From rides to live music and deep-fried fun, there's something for everyone at both of these down-home annual events. ncstatefair.org, gottobencfestival.com

14. Watch planes land. Take a trip to Raleigh-Durham International Airport’s Observation Park to watch planes land, hear pilot-tower communication via audio speakers and spend some time on the park’s playground. rdu.com/observation-park

17. Create art with your family. The Triangle community loves art, so many businesses and organizations provide guided painting and crafting opportunities for people of all ages. The Scrap Exchange in Durham, for example, is a creative reuse center that recycles everyday items for inclusion in art projects. scrapexchange.org
21. Listen to symphonies and cicadas. With a blanket of cotton below and starry night above, enjoy North Carolina Symphony’s Summerfest series, which features themed outdoor symphonies, at Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary. Picnic meals are welcome. ncsymphony.org (search for “Summerfest”)
22. Rough it at the lake. Sure, there’s an abundance of outdoor opportunities throughout the Triangle, but there are also places where your family can get away from the hustle and bustle of life. Choose from the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, North Carolina Museum of History and North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh (all of which offer free admission); the Museum of Life and Science and Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University in Durham; and Kidzu Children’s Museum and Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill. carolinaparent.com/cp/family-fun (click on “Museums and Historical Sites”).
20. Shop fresh at a local farmers market. From the mammoth State Farmers Market in Raleigh to smaller weekend markets across the Triangle, you’ll find plenty of fresh produce and homemade goodies at a town near you. Many farmers markets also host special events. carolinaparent.com/cp/ farmers-markets-grow-in-the-triangle-1

25. Watch the acorn drop. Raleigh is known as “the City of Oaks” so it makes sense that an acorn sculpture stands steadfast in Moore Square year-round. But on New Year’s Eve, that acorn gets transported to City Plaza in order to be lowered slowly by a crane … twice! The acorn drops once early in the evening for families who need to get their kids to bed early, and again as the clock strikes midnight. It’s bizarre, yes… but also kind of amazing. firstnightraleigh.com Mandy Howard is a mother of three and freelance writer in Raleigh.
Sports and Fitness Athletic and fitness-minded families in the Triangle have plenty of options for staying active and healthy. From soccer and golf to swimming and yoga, there’s something for everyone. Browse these listings to find activities perfect for the entire family. bundant green spaces and temperate weather attract many families to the Triangle. What better way to experience the outdoor opportunities this region has to offer than by enjoying a hike through one of its many forests and natural areas? Here are some family-friendly hiking opportunities in the Raleigh-DurhamChapel Hill area — several of which offer recently upgraded trails, and some of which are registered with the “Kids in Parks” program (kidsinparks.com). Starred trails are staff favorites.
DURHAM ENO RIVER STATE PARK 6101 Cole Mill Rd., Durham ncparks.gov/eno-river-state-park/trails A popular spot for fishing, swimming, kayaking and hiking, Eno River State Park
includes many of the region’s best hiking trails. Here are a few that are perfect for families: Cole Mill Trail* – This easy 1-mile loop trail is accessed from the Cole Mill picnic area and runs along the Eno River for part of the way. An offshoot from this trail leads to Bobbitt Hole, an excellent swimming hole. (Note: This swimming hole is a lot of fun — but quite deep. We only recommend it for supervised children who already know how to swim.) Cox Mountain Trail – Families interested in a slightly longer hike will enjoy this 3.75mile loop trail that begins and ends at Fews Ford, a shallow area perfect for wading and picnicking. It includes views of some of the best whitewater areas in the park. Pump Station Trail – This easy 1.5-mile loop trail is known for gentle hills and beautiful spring wildflowers that will provide colorful scenery during your family’s hike. carolinaparent.com
280 State Park Rd., Apex ncparks.gov/jordan-lake-state-recreationarea/trails The large natural area surrounding manmade Jordan Lake offers numerous hiking trails with lake views. They include: Children’s Nature Trail – This 0.5-mile loop trail crosses old farmland and a pond. Sharpeyed hikers may even spot old tobacco rows. The Jordan Lake Track Trail* (a Kids in Parks TRACK Trail) – This 1.25-mile trail includes self-guided, family-friendly educational adventures. Ebenezer Church Old Oak Trail – This 1-mile loop trail can be cut down to a 0.5-mile trail if necessary due to a shortcut that makes it userfriendly for families with young children.
FRED G. BOND METRO PARK 801 High House Rd., Cary townofcary.org (search for “Bond Park”) The 2-mile trail around Bond Lake is pleasant and easy. The park includes several shorter forest trails as well, and a stop by the Lazy Daze playground is a fun way to end the day.
RALEIGH/WAKE FOREST WILLIAM B. UMSTEAD STATE PARK 8801 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh ncparks.gov/william-b-umstead-state-park This park has numerous trails of varying |

❱ SPORTS AND FITNESS Family-Friendly Hikes lengths. Two of the most popular trails for families include: Oak Rock Trail* (a Kids in Parks TRACK Trail) – This 0.6-mile loop trail offers educational adventures for kids. It features a big rock and crosses a small stream. Potts Branch Trail – This 1.3 mile round-trip trail follows the course of three streams and provides excellent picnicking spots.
PRAIRIE RIDGE ECOSTATION*
FALLS LAKE STATE RECREATION AREA 13304 Creedmoor Rd., Wake Forest ncparks.gov/falls-lake-state-recreation-area Falls Lake State Recreation Area has many hiking trails of varying lengths, including the Duck Cove Trail, which is a 1.5-mile Kids In Parks TRACK Trail offering lake views.
2713 Mt. Sinai Rd., Chapel Hill triangleland.org/explore/nature-preserves/ johnston-mill-nature-preserve The 3-mile Johnston Mill Loop trail takes visitors around the preserve, following New Hope Creek for a while and later allowing hikers to look down on the creeks and meadows from a bluff. See fall colors and spring wildflowers along this trail. For a shorter hike, take the 0.6 mile Beech Loop trail through a resplendent beech forest. (Note: New Hope Creek is pretty, but not clean enough for swimming or wading.)

PIEDMONT NATURE TRAILS 100 Old Mason Farm Rd., Chapel Hill ncbg.unc.edu/piedmont-nature-trails Part of the North Carolina Botanical Garden, Piedmont Nature Trails include the familyfriendly Streamside Trail and Oak-Hickory Trail, both short forest loops. These are good hikes for families who want to learn about trees, since many on the trail are labeled.
320 Elizabeth Brady Rd., Ayr Mount visithillsboroughnc.com/things-to-do/ historic-occoneechee-speedway-trail A 1-mile oval loop, which is part of 4 miles of trails, takes visitors alongside the Eno River and around the last surviving racetrack from NASCAR’s first season in 1949. It’s a forested hike now, but you can still see the stands and an old race car, in addition to the track itself.
OCCONEECHEE MOUNTAIN STATE NATURAL AREA
SWIFT CREEK BLUFFS NATURE PRESERVE 7800 Holly Springs Rd., Raleigh triangleland.org/explore/nature-preserves/swiftcreek-bluffs-nature-preserve Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve's familyfriendly loop trail is just over 1 mile. It follows Swift Creek and climbs a picturesque bluff.

Living Kitchen in Chapel Hill and Raleigh serves plant-based organic cuisine.
Raleigh Raw From poke bowls to cold-pressed juices, Raleigh Raw doesn’t just want to feed you — this downtown Oak City restaurant aims to nourish you. Raleigh Raw first made its mark on the Triangle in 2013 by bringing organic, unprocessed and cold-pressed juices to shoppers’ doorsteps. With the backing of an energetic crowdfunding campaign, the Raleigh Raw team opened its brick-and-mortar cafe in 2016 with the same type of cuisine in mind. This hip eatery’s juices and smoothies are kid-tested and parent approved, plus big on taste and nutrition. raleighraw.com

Organic Options Expand in the Triangle BY ELLIOT ACOSTA

reen is the new black when it comes to feeding your family, and the Triangle is no stranger to organic food, with its long growing season and booming businesses. Finding organic goodies for everyone around the table to enjoy is as easy as opening your GPS app. Here are a few options to consider during your search for local organics.
Weaver Street Market Weaver Street Market is a trusted Triangle co-op 30 years in the making and now serves customers in Hillsborough,
Carrboro and Chapel Hill — with a downtown Raleigh location coming later this year to the Warehouse District. The market’s reputation as a must-visit store for organicminded shoppers is centered on collaborations with local food artisans and farmers to provide organic produce, meats, cheeses and even wine. Weaver Street isn’t just building bridges between families and organic food — it also runs a childhood hunger initiative called TABLE and displays customers’ art in the cafe. weaverstreetmarket.coop
Durham Co-op Market A true embodiment of the community it inhabits, the Durham Co-op Market is as much a reflection of the Bull City as it is a market and cafe. Shoppers will identify Durham’s culture in every aspect of the co-op — from obtaining a punch card for walking or biking to it, to feeling welcome to breastfeed within the store. The market also welcomes kids via a robust “Co-op Explorers” program that encourages them to learn more about nutrition. durham.coop carolinaparent.com

Business partners Juliana Luna and Stephen Edwards opened their original Living Kitchen in Charlotte’s South End to fill the void of quality, handcrafted organic and plant-based cuisine. The two expanded their business east to fill the same gap in Chapel Hill and Raleigh. Living Kitchen covers your three square meals a day by offering an expansive menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Plus, Living Kitchen’s Cookie Bites are available in various health food markets around the southeast. These satisfying raw, organic and vegan cookies will have even the most persnickety of children asking for more. livingkitchen.com
Harmony Farms Priding itself as Raleigh’s only 100 percent organic grocery, Harmony Farms has been at the forefront of the organic movement for decades. Long before modern organic buying trends, Harmony Farms

Global Village The beloved coffee shop Global Village has been caffeininating students and professionals alike since 2000. Located on iconic Hillsborough Street near the North Carolina State University campus, the coffee shop is stalwart in its commitment to serving organic coffee and offers coffee shop standards like lattes and cappuccinos, as well as loose leaf teas. A former textile mill in the small town of Pittsboro, Chatham Marketplace offers everything you can find in a mega supermarket — such as a full-service deli, meats, cheeses and produce, for example — but backs them with the market’s “End Statement,” which includes providing healthy foods, supporting local agriculture and strengthening the local economy. While known for its healthy, local and organic offerings, Chatham Marketplace is more of a community hub hosting various events such as weekly storytime sessions and family game nights. chathammarketplace.coop
Buoy Bowls Derek Sharp first discovered his taste for the acai berry, a Brazilian superfood, during a surfing trip to the West Coast. Aiming to bring the joy of this food to the Triangle, he started Buoy Bowls in 2016. Buoy Bowls’ purple food

Fresh Levant Bistro Anita Klahan was once a food blogger focusing on Levantie cuisine from the Eastern Mediterranean, the food of her childhood. However, when she and her family started to become ill and sensitive to certain foods, she refocused her cooking and launched a blog on restorative dieting and clean eating. Her pursuit of delicious organic and gluten-free foods spurred the creation of Fresh Levant Bistro. Located inside Raleigh’s Lafayette Village, Fresh Levant Bistro incorporates organic ingredients in every section of the menu. Even kitchen staples like sweeteners and butters are organic. freshlevant.com
Vegan Flava Cafe What started as a mobile catering delivery service in 2011 turned into a Durham brick-and-mortar business in 2015, thanks to husband-and-wife team Yah-i and Maat Ausar. Since then, Veban Flava Cafe has been dishing out tasty, animal-free meals — from tacos to smoothies — made from organic vegetables and fruits. All food is washed and prepared with Kangen water, which is created from an innovative water technology developed by Enagic, a company based in Japan. Enagic devices filter tap water and produce ionized alkaline and acidic waters through electrolysis. veganflavacafe.com Explore the Triangle's organic food scene with your family. You'll find restaurants and marketplaces that care about the communities they serve, and offer options that work for everyone.
