South Tahoe
The south shore of Lake Tahoe is a year-round vacation paradise of white sand beaches, breathtaking scenery, world-class skiing and prominent entertainment. South Tahoe traces its history to the Pony Express and explorations of Kit Carson. With the settling of the West, casinos were built along Tahoe’s shoreline here, a tradition carried forward today by the entertainment and casino complexes located at Stateline.

This scenic, Old West town played a pivotal role in 19thcentury history as the site of America’s largest silver mining strike—wealth that helped the nation recover from the Civil War and become a world power. Carson Valley

Virginia City
Emerald Bay
One of the most photographed spots on earth, Emerald Bay looks like a Norwegian fjord, dotted with one perfect feature, Fannette Island, which is topped with a stone cottage. Highway 89 hugs the steep walls above the bay, with parking available on the north and south sides. Eagle Falls tumbles down granite cliffs and empties into Lake Tahoe near one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the Western Hemisphere, Vikingsholm, built in 1929.

A nine-day fantasy of creativity and nonconformity, Burning Man attracts 70,000 from around the world—sold-out, eight years running.
Black Rock Desert is desolate and harsh land, but one of surprising beauty—especially true at the center of its huge alkali flats: the “Playa.” For most of the year, being here is a solitary experience of the universe’s power and mystery. But for a week at the end of August, it becomes the 10th largest city in the state and ground zero for experiencing the mystery of the human spirit. The first Burning Man festival started on a San Francisco beach in 1986 but quickly moved to this isolated slice of Nevada roughly 100 miles northeast of Reno. Dust storms, searing day-time temps and chill nights are all part of the elemental experience (somewhat less so for older “burners” in RVs,

the seams reinforced with tape against the dust). “Gifting” is a core principle. Different “camps” spend months planning for their gift, whether it’s free food, drink, entertainment, workshops or foot massages. The festival is organized by the Burning Man Project, a nonprofit. The organization plans and installs the large art and camp structures in this wind-whipped desert. When it’s all over, the staff walks the entire Playa lakebed, cleaning and sweeping up all human traces, a job completed soon after by the winter rains.

CANINE SUPERSTARS For over 40 years, man’s best friend has protected the visitors and skiers of Alpine Meadows.

“Avalanche,” the walkie-talkie crackled. “All available employees report to Big Poma.” The year was 1975. I was a teenage “liftie” at Alpine Meadows, new to the mountains, and had never seen the frozen fury of an avalanche. When I arrived, a first line of searchers had formed midway up the path, some carrying long probe poles like ancient spears. The slide had poured out from the high slopes of Beaver Bowl, with witnesses seeing three, or maybe four skiers disappear in the white wave. Our spears and shovels were our only hope for finding them. Then a snowmobile arrived bringing additional help, two of America’s first avalanche dogs to be exact. The canines were trained by a newly formed organization called WOOF and led
by U.S. Forest Service District Ranger Don Huber in an effort to save those submerged beneath the snow. “Take a shovel,” the lift supervisor told me, “and follow Don.” We tried to keep up with the dogs, me digging wherever they lingered, mindful that time was running out on anyone trapped below. But the rookie dogs seemed unfocused. One rescuer had food in his pack—an obvious distraction. Don worked to keep them directed at parts of the slide with no other searchers. My memory is that the rookies helped find at least one body of the three unfortunates who perished that day. Seven years later, in the wake of a 20-plus-foot snowfall, the nation’s deadliest avalanche roared down from adjacent slopes at Alpine Meadows and exploded through a terminal WHERE GUEST BOOK

and staff room. Seven people died in that slide. But one pinned many feet under the snow and timbers did not. Because the storm raged on and delayed the search, it was five days later when a WOOF dog led Alpine Meadows ski patrollers to Anna Conrad, trapped between a locker and bench but miraculously alive. Now, 35 years later, multiple generations of Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley avalanche dogs have followed in the paw prints of those pioneers. Today’s super-canine ski patrollers, however, are the refined products of decades of breeding and training, true thoroughbreds of the canine world. Of all the amazing teams formed by dog and man these days—in the military, law enforcement, therapy, work with the disabled—the search for avalanche victims is among the most challenging and rewarding, for both partners. Both two-legged and four-legged are highly trained and physically exceptional: one armed with beacons and electronics, the other with an amazing nose. “Dog and handler have to read each other’s thoughts and signals,” says Squaw Valley ski patroller Ben Stone, while Kaya, his Belgian Malinois, naps at his feet. “Kaya does a subtle movement of her head when she’s got a strong scent. Another one of our dogs moves his tail like a helicopter.”
It takes many years of effort to form and perfect this partnership. An experienced patroller might wait several seasons to be given a chance at raising and training an avalanche dog. For the dog’s part, it must be elite in both body and mind. Squaw and Alpine have 16 active avalanche dogs between them (Heavenly, Kirkwood, Mammoth and other resorts also have avalanche dog programs). Labs and retrievers are the most popular breeds, with German Shepherds and Border Collies also in the pack. At Squaw, Boomer is the fifth generation of a red golden retriever line to wear the ski patrol cross. “We are after high-drive animals with established lineage,” says Alpine patroller Chase Allstadt. “We’re asking for a dog that can do a highly involved, intense activity for maybe four hours straight in a cold rain.” The patrols work with specialized breeders throughout North America to find the exact type of dog to fit into their existing team. In one test of temperament, the handler will pin a puppy on its back. “If it just lays there, it will be a great pet,” says Allstadt. “If it fights back really hard, it will be a good police dog. A good avalanche dog fights back just right.” It takes about 1,000 man-hours and multiple years to train a handler and dog. Puppies are paired with their handlers at around 8 weeks old, and both go right to work. The goal:

for the team to “validate” by the end of two winters. The validation exam includes the search of a steep, 100-squaremeter batch of snow with multiple buried items, including sweaters, avalanche transceivers and two live humans. “We dig big holes we call ‘condos’ to bury the people in,” says Stone. “They have to be big or we don’t get any volunteers.” The dog and handler team must find all the hidden objects within a set time, usually 30 to 45 minutes (determined by the number of objects and other factors). The team that passes this test will then continue to train and test year-round for years to come. An avalanche dog in its prime (around 7) can do the work of more than a dozen human rescuers, identifying to its handler the strongest scent in a large swath of debris (indicating where victims are shallow-buried with the best chance at survival). Some Tahoe avalanche dogs have detected the scent of a victim 10 feet deep in an avalanche. On storm days, the dogs are strategically placed inside the ski area. With a slide at Squaw Valley this past winter, the patrol dogs were on site within minutes, a half dozen eventually searching all sections of the avalanche path simultaneously (no one perished). “During a search, each dog is focused on its job,” Stone says, “they have no interest in what the other dogs are doing.”
In an environment of noisy grooming machines, speedy chairlifts, occasional helicopters and avalanche bombs, these dogs remain calm and focused. This is also true when they have to confront a constant distraction around the ski resort: their adoring fans, both children and adults. Squaw and Alpine produce souvenir “trading cards” for each of their patrol dogs: photos on front, stats on the back. “The dog cards are perfect for discerning if a young child is really hurt on the ski hill,” Stone says. “If they stop crying the moment you give them a card, they’re probably alright.” But like every adored athlete, one day these all-stars will begin to grey around the muzzle. Handlers are mindful of the wear and tear on a dog’s joints of running up and down mountainsides, winter after winter. But it’s hard to keep up with the pups, and on one side or the other of a 10th birthday, most “avy” dogs reach a day when their handler, or an independent annual audit, determines it’s time to make room for the young. The dogs enjoy a transition an aging human would envy. “They still come to work and have a sense of purpose,” says Stone. “But they get to laze around a heated lift shack.” And chase an occasional snowball. And look forward for many winters to the affection of both a best friend and endless strangers asking to pet you.

downtown facility, the 1868s play 17 to 18 home matches. The stadium’s ground crew must change the field from baseball to soccer over a dozen times, sometimes in as little as 24 hours. Second and third bases and the infield up to the pitcher’s mound are covered up with 9,500 square feet of grass for a 1868 match. “The soccer atmosphere is completely different than the baseball games,” says Aldo Amato, 1868 Communications Manager. “Our soccer fans are involved and knowledgeable. The Aces fans are more reserved and here for more than the game.” Amato confirms Douglas’ view that the 1868 have become community glue, both for locals and recent arrivals to this boomtown. “People from around the world are moving here for jobs with Tesla or Apple,” he says, referring to large facilities both companies are building nearby. “Many of them are becoming part of our fan base.” Long-time residents have also rallied to the 1868. Up in the high seats, above the Battle Born Brigade, is Bugsy’s Sports Bar and all-you-can-drink beer delivered in very small glasses. Al Gerald and his friends were utilizing the deal to “get a great start to a Saturday night,” with their current position practically in the shadows of Reno’s downtown casinos. “It was awesome when we got a professional soccer team in Reno,” says the Reno local, who grew up playing soccer. “We all got season passes immediately.” “I never played soccer,” says Jonathan Lay, an 18-year old standing nearby. “But I wanted a sport to follow, and I’ve never been a football or baseball fan. I came to the 1868 matches their first season and decided, ‘This is now my sport!’” As the stadium erupts in cheers at an 1868 goal, it’s obvious that the “Beautiful Game,” as soccer star Pele called it, has found a home in the Biggest Little City.

Directly behind the soccer goal posts, a semi clad drum major leads the pounding of eight drummers in Row A— most wearing leather Mexican wrestler masks—and a melting-pot chorus of more than 60 chanting and dancing fans. An aging Viking in a kilt has a voice that fills Greater Nevada Field. Next to him dances his Venezuelan wife and fellow Battle Born Brigaders from Kenya, Los Angeles and Winnemucca, NV. This evening, the Battle Born Brigade supplies chants of accompaniment to the action on the field between “their” Reno 1868 FC and the Colorado Springs Switchbacks, both members of professional soccer’s Triple-A, USL league. By volume and dress, the Brigade appears cut from the same rowdy-soccer-fan cloth known the world round. But at closer examination they live up to their motto: “Grow the game through kindness.” “This team has been great for the community,” says the guy in the kilt, Roy Douglas, at halftime, a Scotsman who’s lived in Reno 27 years. “It’s helped integrate all parts of the population into this,” he says as he spreads his arms, “our dysfunctional family.” The multicultural Brigade is far from the only “family” among 1868 fans. In the midfield seats (where the noise is considerably less), sit the Garretts from nearby Fernley, NV, an AYSO family with season tickets who “never miss a match.” The seats around them are scattered with other families, as is the nearby grassy “family berm” at the end of the stadium. In only its second season, the 1868 have become a new tradition for many in this sports-minded part of the world. The 1868 have sold approximately 2000 season tickets, 1,000 more than the baseball team with whom they share this beautiful, nine-year-old stadium— the Reno Aces, the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Aces play 60 to 70 home games in the
