Shirley Creek creates a magical landscape of falling, tumbling water as it travels down its steep canyon from the Sierra Crest. People and dogs maneuver a sometimes narrow trail that climbs precipitously up and over boulders. You’ll want to stop to catch your breath at many of the lovely waterfalls, which cascade into deep, cold granite pools (where the brave or the furry can cool off). Young or elderly hikers might need a hand at a few points on the climb, but the path is well-worn and largely friendly to all generations. Make it all the way up to Squaw Valley Ski Resort’s High Camp lodge and you can spare your knees by taking a free aerial tram ride back down to the base.

Dogs: Allowed

The Tahoe Rim Trail is rated one of the best walks in the country by outdoor and travel media every year. There are a number of spots where day-hikers can conveniently access the ridge-top route, but one of the easiest is in Tahoe Meadows off Nevada State Route 431. Departing from this northern point, the Rim Trail heads south to some of Tahoe’s most spectacular views. There are a number of spots with views of scenic ridges that can serve as impromptu destinations for out-and-back hikes. Or head one-way all the way to Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park and descend a sandy road to Incline Village. Mountain bikers are only allowed along this entire route on even-numbered calendar days. One of the most accessible sections of the famous Pacific Crest Trail is south of Donner Summit near Truckee. Head south from one of many parking spots and you’ll soon be climbing up a wooded ridge toward Mount Judah, then to Mount Lincoln or beyond to peaks stretching toward Tahoe. Take a comfortable out-and-back hike or go “peak bagging” all day to Squaw Valley. Near the hike’s start are the first Intercontinental Railroad tunnels, chiseled through solid granite by Chinese laborers in the 1860s, now abandoned and ripe for exploration (take a flashlight and a friend). World-class events heat up summer in North Tahoe. “North Lake Tahoe is the holy grail for outdoor events,” says Sean Hoess, co-founder of the phenomenally popular Wanderlust Festival, which features yoga and meditation, music and more. “The summer weather is consistently beautiful, there’s a rich variety of amenities. Add Reno’s proximity to major cities via direct flights and you’ll understand why we chose North Tahoe as Wanderlust’s original home.” Whether you’re into yoga, music, great food, marathons or Navy Seal-like challenges, North Tahoe’s summer calendar has you covered. In late September, some of the world’s toughest test themselves at the Reebok Spar28 SUMMER/FALL 2018 | North Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide

tan Race World Championship at Squaw Valley. “With its deep roots in Olympic history, picturesque landscape, exceptional resorts and attractions, we couldn’t imagine a better location than North Lake Tahoe to host our world championships,” says Spartan Race founder and CEO, Joe De Sena. Athletes have multiple choices for races almost every weekend in the summer and fall. They line up by the thousands for Big Blue Adventure races—20 events from June into October—including swimming, paddling, trail running, mountain biking, triathlons and a marathon.

THE WANDERLUST FESTIVAL

“We are blessed with near-perfect outdoor venues for every event we hold,” says Big Blue founder and president Todd Jackson. But you don’t need to be an aerobic animal to have fun here! Now in its 33rd year, the Lake Tahoe Autumn Food & Wine Festival (September 7th - 8th) transforms The Village at Northstar into a culinary dream of fine wine, microbrews and creative dishes served up by the region’s best chefs. Foodies from throughout the West flock to this don’t-miss weekend. Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival is celebrating its 46th year, with performances of Macbeth and other productions scheduled throughout July and August at its awe-inspiring, one-of-a-kind natural sand amphitheater at Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park. North Lake Tahoe’s Summerlong Music Series showcases free weekly concerts Tuesday through Sunday, rotating between Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Northstar California and Squaw Valley. If classical music and dance strike the right notes, wander over to the Tahoe Dance Festival from July 25th to the 27th for a presentation of the Lake Tahoe Dance Collective. Afterwards, enjoy the Lake Tahoe Music Festival performing August 21st to 26th as concerts at various venues combine beautiful music by a 26-piece orchestra, with dance, food and wine. “The beauty of the lake is an equal partner to the music,” says Lake Tahoe Music Festival president Bonnie Dyer. West Shore The peaks of the Sierra Crest tower over Tahoe’s azure waters on this beautiful and serene stretch of shoreline. West Shore includes the small communities of Sunnyside, Homewood, Tahoma and Meeks Bay, as well as marinas, picnic grounds and three state parks. Summer recreation abounds: waterskiing, paddleboarding, hiking, mountain biking and more. Sugar Pine Point State Park is the site of the lovely and historic Ehrman Mansion and grounds. Bliss State Park has a wonderful sandy beach and granite coves and cliffs. There is world-famous scenery at Emerald Bay State Park as well as a short hike down below Eagle Falls to a Norwegian “castle,” Vikingsholm. A lovely bike path runs along much of the length of the West Shore through forests, past beaches and lake views, restaurants and delis. The West Shore is lined with multiple marinas offering boat, paddleboard and jet-ski rentals. Whether on a calm morning of fishing or waterskiing, or dining under sunsets and stars, West Shore captures the relaxed, summer vacation magic of a by-gone era, carried forward by generations of families who return to these shores, summer after summer.

Kings Beach/Tahoe Vista Those looking to have a laid-back day at the beach will enjoy this fun and charming stretch of North Lake Tahoe. Bring a picnic and settle in for a lazy summer day on the sand, or stroll the shoreline and dine under umbrellas. South-facing and sun-soaked from dawn to dusk, this is Tahoe’s banana belt and its wide beach is particularly popular with families. Parking is available adjacent to the beach, with a number of restaurants and watering holes nearby. Beachfront shops rent kayaks, paddleboards and other water toys. A favorite paddling excursion is east to Crystal Bay point and its mammoth islands of granite boulders. Or just paddle around in the sandy shallows that extend well into the lake, where you’ll find some of Tahoe’s warmest waters. North Tahoe Regional Park offers miles of trails for hiking and biking, tennis courts, an 18-hole disc golf course and large playing fields for soccer and other sports. There are both full and mini golf courses in Kings Beach. Or test your skills on the bridge or zipline courses that run through the trees at Tahoe Treetop Adventure Park. Shopping in Kings Beach includes eclectic boutiques and gift shops. When the sun sets, this stretch of shoreline has a full range of restaurants, from fine dining to take-out to authentic Mexican cuisine.

Truckee The historic Old West town of Truckee is less than 15 miles from North Lake Tahoe. Its downtown buildings are wonderfully preserved and house a wide variety of modern boutiques, restaurants, watering holes, galleries and shops. Truckee and its environs played a seminal role in the opening of the American West, first as a stop on the route pioneers took to California, then as the site of the most difficult phase of track-laying of the first Intercontinental Railroad. It was once a notorious frontier town, the center of the ice industry and, more than 100 years ago, the site of one of the West’s first winter mountain resorts. At Donner Memorial State Park you’ll find a museum as well as quiet beaches on the shores of Donner Lake. At the lake’s western end is a popular park with sandy beaches, large lawns, water toy rentals and swimming area. Nearby Donner Summit has world-class rock climbing and beautiful views off Old Highway 40. Tahoe Donner is just above Truckee with a popular 18-hole golf course and clubhouse. Hiking and biking routes are nearby. For a riverside cycle, Truckee and the community of Glenshire are now connected by a beautiful bike route—the Truckee Legacy Trail.
