RENO TAHOE IS A FAVORITE DESTINATION of savvy travelers

from around the globe. Here, the largest alpine lake in North America collides with the Biggest Little City in the World—a beautiful contradiction of high adrenaline activities, a burgeoning art scene and remote solitude. Talk about a complete vacation menu: world-class scenery, white sand beaches, lush golf courses, huge ski resorts, 24-hour gaming and entertainment, superlative dining and one-of-a-kind events you won't find anywhere else! The pages that follow contain insights from a few of the world’s most active travel bloggers— magic spots and experiences enjoyed by arts mavens, adventure seekers, “love birds,” shopaholics, six women on the loose and others. What they’ve all discovered in Reno is a city in renaissance. A robust mix of heavy hitter companies have set up shop in this tech-savvy community, fostering the creation of new restaurants, shops, nightlife and art that takes to the streets with murals and sculptures. Pristine mountain locations like Mount Rose and Tahoe Meadows are only a 20-30-minute drive outside Reno. Lake Tahoe is an all-season sweet spot, a playhouse of both summer and winter sports and leisure. No matter how outsized your wishes may be, or off-the-hook your ambitions, seek and ye shall find your ideal adventure in Reno Tahoe. VISITRENOTAHOE.COM

NO MATTER WHICH ADVENTURE YOU CHOOSE, RENO TAHOE WILL SATISFY YOUR CRAVING. This is a place full of epic vacation choices, but if you’re only here for a short time, here are a few experiences not to miss: try your luck gambling in downtown Reno, or test your strength on the world’s tallest outdoor climbing wall. Take a selfie by the iconic Reno Arch, or pick from a hundred dining choices before cruising on the Reno Brew Bike. Maybe you’re here for one of the many spectacular events that draw visitors throughout the year, like the Great Reno Balloon Race. Whatever the season of your visit, don’t miss experiencing Lake Tahoe, her beauty is both natural and unsurpassed. Tahoe is a mecca for the outdoor enthusiast, and the lake’s pristine waters are what dreams are made of. Just ask Mark Twain. His writings also have a lot to say about Virginia City, a well-preserved mining city of the 1850s where Twain started his career. It’s now a vacation bonanza where you can belly up to the bar at an authentic saloon or ride a historic steam train. Wherever you travel around spectacular Reno Tahoe, expect the unexpected!

BUCKET LIST ADVENTURES RENO TAHOE IS A “MAKE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE” BUFFET, from world-class skiing, biking and hiking to more off-beat and unexpected fun. How about surfing in downtown Reno? Smack dab in the middle of Reno is the Truckee River Whitewater Park, a half-mile stretch of river with standing waves, rapids and pools surrounded by grass. To experience bucket list items from several sports, head up to the stunning alpine world of North Lake Tahoe. The Flume Trail travels precipitously along a steep mountainside on a route originally cut in the

1850s to carry timber to Nevada’s silver mines. Start your day with sunrise at Emerald Bay, a must on every photographer’s bucket list. Hike your way through nearby trails into Desolation Wilderness. Then visit another world—Black Rock Desert—best known as the home of Burning Man but open year-round. Travel the Burner Byway past Guru Road and Pottery X. Explore hot springs or just soak in the solitude. With very little light pollution, nighttime here is a cosmic experience of wide sky and the brightest stars you’ve ever seen. VISITRENOTAHOE.COM

A DV E N T U R E LOV E R S

LOVE IS IN THE AIR IN RENO TAHOE! WHETHER YOU ARE looking for relaxing quiet time or something more exhilarating, there is no better spot for a romantic getaway! Venture from your comfortable hotel room to a slow rev-up at one of many locally-owned coffee shops. Old World Coffee in MidTown is a favorite, as is Hub Coffee Roasters along the Truckee River and Global Coffee located in The Basement. If sharing quality time in the great outdoors is a turn-on for your relationship, head up to “The Lake of the Sky.” Lake Tahoe skiing, snowshoeing, biking, hiking, paddling and boating are all world-class, each with the potential to finish at a scenic après spot for drinks. If relaxation sounds more romantic, northern Nevada is full of natural hot springs, some a little more off the beaten path, others wellmaintained and easily accessible like Carson Hot Springs or Steamboat Hot Springs. Then it’s time for date night! Reno may be landlocked, but all-you-can-eat sushi is a way of life here. Share some fresh, mouthwatering rolls at Tokyo Sushi, IJJI, Tha Joint or Sushi Sake at Eldorado Resort.

THE WONDERFUL OFF-SEASON FALL IS A MAGICAL TIME IN THE SIERRA AND NORTHERN NEVADA. Daytime temperatures are usually in the 70s or 80s F and you might just get the trails, rivers, beaches and lodging all to yourself. Reno Tahoe is also the perfect destination for groups, with activities for all interests and ages. There are literally hundreds of great walks and hikes to choose from, including Hunter Creek Waterfall Trail just outside downtown Reno. Follow a paved bike path along the Truckee River through Reno or

plan a beach picnic and enjoy solitude at Sand Harbor State Park. This is one of the most-photographed places in the U.S., rightly so, with pristine, turquoise waters. Fall evenings usually stay warm enough for scenic outdoor dining and drinks. Cozy up to a lakeview fire pit at Lone Eagle Grill in Incline Village or play yard games at The Eddy in Reno. Dine by flowing rapids along Reno’s Riverwalk at Wild River Grille or The Shore Room at Reno Renaissance, and toast to sunsets and friendships. VISITRENOTAHOE.COM

FUN ALL NIGHT LONG

HOP BOMBS & FARM-TO-BOTTLE OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS, ALMOST 50 BREWERIES, distilleries and wineries have turned Reno Tahoe into an oasis for lovers of the crafts. Run by a young beer savant, Lead Dog Brewing is a must-visit, featuring a rotating lineup of eclectic flavors. Located in the Reno Brewery District, Lead Dog shares a building with Basin and Range Cellars, is next door to The Depot Craft Brewery Distillery, and is down the street from Pigeon Head

18

RENO TAHOE VISITOR PLANNER

Brewery. For premium IPA, New Englandstyle beer shakes and hop bombs, visit Revision Brewing Co. Stop by their beer factory in Sparks, the largest in the region, or visit their new taproom above Pignic Pub & Patio in downtown Reno for a lowkey tasting. Cocktails anyone? Compare the 18th century-styled spirits of Seven Troughs Distilling to the modern perfectionism of 10 Torr Distillery and Brewery. Seven Troughs

produces small batch moonshine and whiskey in open barrels while 10 Torr creates smooth booze and canned cocktails on a large-scale. In the Carson Valley, Bently Heritage Estate Distillery grows their own grains for their vodka and gins. Frey Ranch Estate Distillery in Fallon has roots dating back more than a hundred years! They produce absinthe, vodka and gin, and their first aged bourbon will come out this year.

Take a trip back in time with 100-year-old Italian recipes at Casale’s Halfway Club, the oldest family-owned restaurant in town, or make new friends and taste Nevada’s Basque heritage over a hearty family-style meal at Louis’ Basque Corner. We’ve got comfort food covered in spades! Try Roundabout Grill’s Fish Shack Shrimp beneath the Reno Arch

or taste soulful Southern at M&M’s Southern Café in Sparks. You want pizza? National news outlets and Yelp say Smiling With Hope has the best East Coast-style pie west of the Mississippi. Whatever cravings come after a day of adventures in Reno Tahoe can easily be satisfied and Yelp is your local guide to it all. Download the app, explore and share what you discover with others!

RENO TAHOE VISITOR PLANNER

GETTING HERE IS EASIER THAN YOU THINK! Several direct flights are available from all parts of the country, including the Midwest and the East Coast. Check out a list of airlines serving the Reno-Tahoe International Airport by going to VisitRenoTahoe.com/flights. Reno-Tahoe International Airport is one the country’s most convenient airports, with baggage claim, rental cars, parking and transportation close to the boarding gates. Many major resort hotels and casinos are within a 10-minute drive, and there are free shuttles from the airport to most hotels. If you travel by car, Reno and Sparks are located at the junction of Interstate 80 and U.S. 395/I-580. I-80 provides all-weather access across Donner Summit from Central and Northern California. From Southern California, it's a straight shot up U.S. 395 just east of the Sierra Nevada. From the Northwest, take I-5 south to I-80 or, in the spring and summer, opt for the shortcut that leaves I-5 at Mount Shasta and follows California 89 and 44 southeast through Susanville. You can use the railroads as a third option, with Amtrak’s California Zephyr, which arrives daily from the Bay Area and Sacramento to the west, and Salt Lake City and Denver to the east. Trains from the Northwest, coastal Southern California and the Central Valley connect to the Zephyr in Sacramento.
