NAMAKA AND THE NIGHT MARCHERS A NEW TALE OF ROAMING SPIRITS BY MONTE MCCOMBER
This year, our quarterly series of cultural editorials takes inspiration from Hawai‘i’s storytelling traditions. We revisit them. We reimagine them. And from their framework, we weave a new story. This is the first of a two-part series about Nāmaka and the Night Marchers. Read the series in its entirety at rmagazinewaikiki.com. SERVED RAW, PAN-SEARED OR BROILED, ‘AHI IS A FAVORITE FISH AMONG HAWAI‘I CHEFS.
ASK ROYAL HAWAIIAN CENTER CHEFS which fish best represents Hawaiian culture and cuisine, and they'll all tell you, ‘ahi. Indeed, the yellowfin and bigeye tuna (both refer to ‘ahi in Hawai‘i) have long been fished in our local waters, dating back to 1899 when the first wooden sampan was brought to Hawai‘i. At Doraku Sushi Waikīkī, ‘ahi is represented in various preparations, from the classic poke and sashimi to pan-seared and hand rolls. During a recent re-grand opening after months of renovations, owner Kevin Aoki says they’ve elevated their ingredients to include new deluxe sushi platters.

IN HAWAI‘I, PAU HANA IS A DEDICATED TIME FOR SPECIALTY DRINKS AND PŪPŪ (APPETIZERS). AND WHILE THE ORIGINS OF THE TERM IS AS MUDDLED AS A MOJITO, ONE THING IS CERTAIN: WE ALL LIKE A GOOD DEAL.
NOI THAI CUISINE Scoring major points for its culinary presentation and dining room aesthetics, Noi Thai Cuisine offers guests a taste of Thailand in a palatial-like setting. Golden leaves dangle from the ceiling in one private room and a mini ‘reflecting pool’ sits in the main dining area. “You come here for the show and the experience,” says owner Noi Lapangkura, the restaurant’s namesake. “The food is authentic Thai cuisine but with a modern twist to the presentation.” During Happy Hour, from 3 to 6 p.m., guests can enjoy a glass of red or white wine ($7) or sip on a cold Singha Beer ($5). Ask about the Cocktail of the Night ($7), which is often a creative concoction. Menu selections include fresh spring rolls ($5), crab wontons ($7), Bangkok red or yellow curry ($10) and, of course, chicken satay ($7). Building C, Level 3, 808.664.4039 honolulu.noithaicuisine.com

HAWAIIAN 101 Speaking in Native Tongue ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i is the indigenous language of Hawai‘i. Along with English, Hawaiian is an official language of the state of Hawai‘i. Keep reading to learn many Hawaiian words and phrases you will encounter at Royal Hawaiian Center, along with a helpful pronunciation guide. Some Hawaiian words have no perfect parallel in English pronunciation, because it’s often difficult to differentiate between the diphthongs ae/ai and ao/au. HALE KŪ'AI (huh-lay koo-eye*) Store Royal Hawaiian Center has a variety of hale kū‘ai that range from luxurious to casual. KAI (like “kite,” minus the “t”) Sea Royal Hawaiian Center is just steps from Waikīkī beach, famous for its white sands, surfing and sunsets. KALO (kah-loh) Taro The kalo, or taro plant, brought to these islands by the first settlers, was a staple of the Native Hawaiian diet. Find kalo plants in The Royal Grove between Buildings B and C. KALĀKAUA (Ka-lah*-kau-uh) The Hawaiian Kingdom’s seventh ruler The namesake of Waikīkī’s main thoroughfare, King Kalākaua’s name was inherited from an ancestor and means “the day (lā) of battle (kaua).”

'ŌHI’A LEHUA (oh*-heē-ah-lay-hoō-ah) The flower of the ‘ōhi‘a tree and the official flower of the island of Hawai‘i This is the favorite flower of the volcano goddess, Pele. In the moist uplands where it more commonly grows, rare honeycreepers feed on the nectar from its feathery blooms. A few ‘ōhi‘a trees grow in The Royal Grove and are a treasured part of this site. PĀ‘INA (pah-eē-nah) Dinner, meal or small party; to dine There are nearly two dozen choices to pā‘ina at Royal Hawaiian Center: a food court and restaurants offering multicultural fare. UAPO (oo-wah-po) Bridge The uapo over The Royal Grove is named Kahalaopuna for the princess of Mānoa Valley whose beauty was likened to a rainbow.
