NAMAKA AND THE LITTLE FOLK A NEW TALE OF THE MENEHUNE BY MONTE MCCOMBER

This is the conclusion of a two-part series about Nāmaka and the menehune; a retelling of the architectural feats of these miniature people. In the first installation, we meet Nāmaka, a curious young boy who encounters the village’s hermit, Pana‘ewa. What happens next remains a mystery. The story’s entirety can be found at rmagazinewaikiki.com. ILLUSTRATIONS BY JESSICA KE‘ALA KIM TRANSLATION BY ELI LĪHAUANU MAIOHO

CHEFS PUT ON AN ARTISTIC DISPLAY OF VIBRANT COLORS AND CONTRASTING FLAVORS.

OSCAR WILDE ONCE OPINED: “Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” So true is this among Royal Hawaiian Center’s cadre of chefs, who can transform a palette of ordinary ingredients and colors into edible masterpieces that are at times too pretty to eat. At Noi Thai Cuisine, carrots are intricately carved into lotus-like blooms. A melon takes the form of a bird and edible floral petals add as much visual pop as they do flavor. And dishes are revealed with all the pomp and circumstance afforded to a grand opening of an art installation.

P.F. CHANG’S WAIKĪKĪ As if P.F. Chang’s Waikīkī’s “dynasty” list of Chinese cuisine wasn’t tempting enough, its daily happy hour (from 4 to 6 p.m.) menu is equally as appealing. Guests can choose their “ying” and “yang” from a menu that includes $5, $7, $9, $11 and $14 options. According to manager Paris Ake, four of the more popular items are the crab wontons ($7), Dynamite Shrimp ($9), ahi poke salad ($14) and, of course, the famous Chang’s chicken lettuce wraps ($9). The happier side of the menu offers $4 hot sake, $4.50 beers, and $6.50 well drinks and wines by the glass. Cocktail selections ($9.50) feature the refreshing blueberry mojito and Waikīkī Chang’s Mai Tai. “We’re always busy during Happy Hour,” Ake says. “Except for the pork dumplings and crab wontons, the portions are all the same.”

LEARN THE HULA Hula is the art of Hawaiian

dance. It expresses all that we hear, see, smell, taste, touch and feel. Hula is life. The late kumu hula (dance master) Maiki Aiu Lake’s philosophy expresses the depths of this Hawaiian art form. Puake‘ala Mann, a kumu hula graduate of Halau Hula o Maiki, shares basic hand gestures, footwork and body movements that accentuate meaningful mele (chant or song) lyrics. All ages are welcomed to participate in this fun class. For a complete schedule, turn to page 14 of our “Cultural Calendar.”

LOMILOMI Spirituality defines many of

our cultural practices, especially in the area of healing arts, the most well-known of which is lomilomi. It has been practiced regularly for generations by all members of the ‘ohana while more intense, specific treatments are left to trained experts. Like other healing arts, the skills and practices are passed from masters to apprentices through formal training and ceremonies. Today, lomilomi enjoys national and international visibility with such other styles as Japanese shiatsu and Swedish massage. Royal Hawaiian Center instructors teach basic techniques to apply and receive a casual massage.

PĀ‘INA LĀNAI Take your palate on an

international tasting at the Center’s food court, where Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Vietnamese and Italian flavors abound. And if you’re looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, try the airy cheesecake at Uncle Tetsu or indulge in a Diamond Head cream puff from kulu kulu honolulu. ROCK-A-HULA Elvis is in the house. And so,

too, are the King of Pop and local artists Sienna Souza and Irie Love. And together, the trio put on an entertaining “Rock-A-Hula” show, which combines toe-tapping songs complemented with writhing hips and smooth choreography. With the energy of a volcano and the star-power of a Vegas review, this entertaining show is the largest of its kind in Waikīkī.

6

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT Listen to the lilting sounds

of Hawaiian music, featuring some of Hawai’‘is top artists. Scheduled on Saturdays, the Hula Kahiko at Helumoa features dancers who perform traditional (kahiko) hula. Mele Pākolu, with performances on selected Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 6-7, features such seasoned virtuosos as George Kuo and Greg Sardinha.
