NĀMAKA AND THE NIGHT MARCHERS
A NEW TALE OF ROAMING SPIRITS BY MONTE MCCOMBER ILLUSTRATIONS BY JESSICA KE‘ALA TRANSLATION BY ELI LĪHAUANU MAIOHO
This year, our quarterly culture series takes inspiration from Hawai‘i’s storytelling traditions. We revisit them. We reimagine them. And from their framework, we weave a new story. This is the second of a two-part series about Nāmaka and the Night Marchers. Read the series in its entirety at rmagazinewaikiki.com. Nāmaka paced along the edges of the lo‘i kalo (taro patch). THE BUZZING SOUND FROM A PAGER CAN BE heard throughout the room as diners wave their beepers and rush to get their noodles from Ringer Hut Nagasaki Champon. Next door, lines form as people place their orders at Kazan Ramen Express. These are the two latest additions to Royal Hawaiian Center’s Pā‘ina Lānai Food Court, and they’ve created quite the buzz among visitors and kama‘āina alike. While polar opposite in styles, the two restaurants claim the key to their noodles is the broth. The Nagasaki Champon consists of a milky chicken-andpork-bone soup topped with a variety of vegetables, including fresh cabbage and sprouts, as well as thinly sliced meat and fishcake. Another mouthwatering bowl of noodles is the Fujiyam Champon, garnished with seven types of vegetables. On a different spectrum, the Kazan Ramen Express broth is prepared with tori paitan, a type of broth made from chicken bones. Two of the more popular options are the Vegetable Kazan Ramen and the Shoyu Ramen. Both are must-try options that easily quell those hunger pangs.

KONA COFFEE Prized Cherry
Known the world over, yet grown in only one incredibly remote corner of the world, Kona Coffee is a remarkable Hawaiian crop. On the Island of Hawai‘i, the narrow “coffee belt” is in the Kona district. RMagAdTemplate:Layout 1 9/3/19 5:45 PM Page 1
On the slopes of the Hualālai and Mauna Loa volcanoes, coffee plants luxuriate in the perfect growing conditions: volcanic soil, warm weather and many dedicated farmers upholding a centuries-old legacy. The result is a coffee supremely rich in flavor and aroma. So distinctive are these beans that, in order to be labeled “Kona Coffee,” the beans must be at least 10 percent pure Kona (though purists insist 10 percent is not enough). Today, many of Kona’s coffee farms give tours, and even large coffee house chains are riding the wave of its appeal. However, never is

packaged 100 percent Kona Coffee, which is a fantastic gift or souvenir. If local is what you’re looking for, Island Vintage Coffee carries 100 percent locally roasted Kona beans. Its Peaberry is robust, made from the prized rare coffee cherries (known as peaberries) that make up just 5 percent of a typical coffee harvest. The shops also offer flavored Kona blends, as well as flavored cigars, chocolatecovered beans and wonderful gift baskets.
