On behalf of our entire family of more than 110 retailers and restaurants, it is my tremendous pleasure to welcome you to Royal Hawaiian Center here at the esteemed Helumoa, Waikīkī. Standing proudly upon grounds that were once the home of Her Royal Highness, Princess Bernice Pauahi—great-granddaughter of King Kamehameha I, who unified the islands of Hawai‘i into one nation in 1810— Royal Hawaiian Center now spans three city-blocks of the very best shopping possibilities, culinary experiences, and cultural encounters that Waikīkī has to offer. Because we are here on land of Hawaiian royalty, Royal Hawaiian Center has made a steadfast commitment to maintaining the legacy of our ancestors through cultural arts classes, which we offer throughout the week. ‘Ūkulele is taught by Wainani Yim and Puake‘ala Mann three times each week in Helumoa Hale just off the Royal Grove; we offer lei making with Maxeen Shea three times each week, 4 i Royal

and Keoua Nelsen will teach you how to make a lau hala bracelet three times a week over in Building A; Uncle Tom Cummings shares artifacts of Hawaiian life twice a week in Helumoa Hale; and, Puake‘ala Mann, who has been with the Center for some 34 years now, also teaches hula four times each week in the Royal Grove. Aloha is one of those words that has become ubiquitous with Hawai‘i. You might know it to mean “hello” or “goodbye” but, in many ways, there really is no English equivalent. In the words of Queen Lili‘uokalani (r. 18911893), “aloha was a recognition of life in another and, where there was life, there was mana (spiritual essence), goodness, and wisdom.” Indeed, we do our very best here at Royal Hawaiian Center to recognize life in all things and in all the work that we do and we hope that you might share in our aloha. So, definitely join us for a teppan lunch at Restaurant Suntory, the very first merchant to make Royal Hawaiian Center its home, or for an exquisite dinner at Noi Thai, our newest restarant. Be sure to visit Harry Winston’s largest salon in the world and some of the most creative, innovative, and locally owned, retail boutiques all right here in our Center. And, while you are spending your time with us, I hope you might also make some time to get to know our cultural practitioners—Hawaiians we are so proud to be able to share with all of you and who, themselves, share so much aloha. No laila e o‘u mau hoa, nou nō kēia hale nei ‘o ka Royal Hawaiian Center. E kipa mai! And so, my dear friends, our Royal Hawaiian Center is your home. You are welcome here.

Honolulu’s breathtaking Tantalus Hills, medical practitioners Howard and Betty Liljestrand befriended Mr. Coulter, the owner of a parcel of property that the couple would eventually call home. Designed by architect Vladimir Ossipoff, the Liljestrand House was the ideal location to showcase this season’s fashions from the Royal Hawaiian Center. While natural light filtered a dream-like escape through our camera lens, the interior walls of redwood were the perfect canvas to juxtapose the rich color trends and helped tell a story of tranquility and effortless style.

We’ve got great news ladies: “athleisure” (aka clothing designed for workouts, but can double for such other settings as work or social gatherings) is still hot and ready to be sported; so continue to rock your days in the comfort of your athletic gear without breaking a sweat. Stray away from the typical uniform of black yoga pants and a ponytail and add some color like Samantha’s graffiti-inspired print shorts and quilted vest from ROYAL HAWAIIAN GOLF SHOP. Shoes are an important piece to the ensemble, which FURLA (right) and FENDI (below) have done very well to help tie in the comfy trend.

Fan-like fronds rustle in the gently embrace of sea-kissed, Emerald banners herald a lush oasis, Stately coconut trees tower upwards, trunks scarred by the years Ebbing shade below encircled by lush native growth blossoming and crawling, ‘Āpuakēhau cools the air, whispers as it meanders.

Beneath the shade of the famed Helumoa Coconut Grove By Aaron SalĀ
©dana edmunds
The Royal Grove of Royal Hawaiian Center pays homage to Helumoa, the ancient site of an astonishing coconut grove numbering 10,000 trees established by the renown ruler of O‘ahu, Kakuhihewa. It is the heart-beating hub of Royal Hawaiian Center. Hundreds of kama‘āina (locals) and malihini (visitors) learn to hula, thanks to Puake‘ala Mann who has been teaching at Royal Hawaiian Center since 1984. Noon is a time for respite from sight-seeing and shopping. Travelers often enjoy a picnic-style meal with friends and family, as their keiki (children) ex
plore the plants and waterways. In the evenings you’ll find merriment with musicians and dancers who take to the stage to share the poetry and beauty of these lands in melody and motions. The Royal Grove also welcomes visiting performing groups who come to Hawai‘i to learn about the native culture and to share a piece of their home. Meaning ‘spouting fresh water,’ Waikīkī is an ahupua‘a, a self-sustaining, wedge-shaped division of land that’s rich with resources inclusive of ocean, seashore, flat plains, mountain regions, winds and sky.

R Culture Ahupua‘a means ‘pig altar’ and these altars stood sentry at the boundaries of an ahupua‘a. The ahupua‘a of Waikīkī was once laden with pools, springs and streams that fed into vast sections of agricultural fields plump with kalo (taro) and other foods. The entire water system drew sustenance from the waters that collected at the peaks of the Ko‘olau mountain range and pu‘u, valley hills. As the water flowed out to the sea, it separated into streams which include the Pi‘inaio, ‘Āpuakēhau and Ku‘ekaunahi. The Royal Grove pays tribute to the ‘Āpuakēhau with a bubbling

The Hallmark of Hawaiian Music The steel guitar emits a sound that is very distinct By monte mccomBer

While the ‘Ūkulele is synonymous with hawai‘i, the steel guitar has the distinction of being a uniquely hawaiian instrument. it was created by an 11-year old boy named Joseph kekuku in 1885. he was a self-taught guitarist and by a serendipitous accident discovered he could alter the tone of the guitar by applying various objects to the strings. his tinkerings, which included using a rusty bolt and pocket knife, eventually resulted in the hawaiian guitar (the more popular name for the steel guitar used in the early 1900s). Although he was a country boy from lā‘ie on the island on O‘ahu, kekuku’s career as a virtuoso would take him coast to coast on the continental united States and europe. in 1889, he and childhood friend Samuel Nainoa left the comforts of his village for schooling at kamehameha Schools. With better equipment and under the tutelage of his instructor, John Padigan, kekuku perfected his steel bar. Noted historian Donald “kilolani” Mitchell, Ph.D., describes the final fabrication as “a slim cylinder of steel about 4 inches long, convenient to hold in his left hand and able to slide noiselessly along the strings.” kekuku replaced the gut strings with wire to sustain notes for a longer period, and perfected his playing method.Born was the steel guitar. he left hawai‘i in his 30s, taking his group, “kekuku’s hawaiian

Quintet,” on tour across America. At the age of 45 he made his European debut in “The Bird of Paradise” show, which later became a movie due to its popularity. Wherever he went and wherever he played, crowds flocked and the number of admirers of the Hawaiian boy and his steel guitar grew. Soon the number of steel guitarists grew; the ranks included such notables as Ernest Ka‘ai, Herman Bishaw, Ben Hokea and Walter Kolomuku. In an ensemble (‘ukulele, guitar, and upright bass), the steel guitar ornaments the melody line of a song as the pitch slides diatonically between notes ending with a trill (alternating between a tone or semitone) or chiming. Sometimes as an entirely musical verse—no lyrics—the steel guitarist will play the melody line with some embellishments during an interlude called a pā‘ani, meaning ‘to play’ as in a sport or game. The sound of the steel guitar is unmistakable and may be the reason for using the term ‘haunting’ to describe Hawaiian melodies and to distinguish them from other genres. Ethnomusicologist and Professor Emeritus from the University of Maryland, Mantle Hood, Ph.D., may have said it best in characterizing the steel guitar’s influence on Hawaiian music: “In fact, the sound of the steel guitar is considered the hallmark of Hawaiian music.” Last month Royal Hawaiian Center celebrated this Hawaiian musical creation by hosting the Waikīkī Steel Guitar Festival in partnership with the Hawai‘i Institute for Music Enrichment and Learning Experiences. The all-day festival drew hundreds of people to the Royal Grove. The festival included a special exhibit of vintage steel guitars and featured nine steel guitar performances. If you’re on O‘ahu around this time next year, please come and enjoy a one of a kind experience. He mai!

“We don’t have this in Japan,”
a guest was overheard saying to his companions, as a waiter delivered a hefty steak to their table. Pointing to the sanguine slices of meat and snapping Instagram photos with their smartphones, the party of four appeared content with their order, which also included sides of creamed corn, onion rings, asparagus and rice. For David and Carrera Marotto, only the Porterhouse steak would do for the Canadian couple. “It’s the best of two steaks in one,” gushed the visiting honeymooners who had heard of Wolfgang’s Steak House from a fellow passenger while on their flight from Victoria, British Columbia to O‘ahu. “I like the striploin half and Carrera likes the tenderloin.” It’s impossible to go wrong with any of the steak selections at this tony establishment. After all, the cuts here are all designated “Prime,” a ranking reserved for only two percent of all the premium beef in the Midwest. Since opening its Royal Hawaiian Center location seven years ago, Wolfgang's Steakhouse by Wolfgang Zwiener has generated a buzz across the U.S., as well as Asia. “We get a lot of air play in Japan, thanks to a popular boys band and two major comedians,” says general manager Bill Nickerson. “If you’re coming to Hawai‘i from Japan, you’ll be eating at Wolfgang’s.” After 40 years as the head waiter and maître d’ at the revered Peter Luger Steak House in Brooklyn, Wolfgang Zwiener decided to open his own eponymous steakhouse on lower Park Avenue, with the encouragement of his two sons
and a couple of loyal waiters. And when a New York Times headline screamed “After 40 Years, a Waiter is the Boss,” Zwiener had joined the ranks of the Lugers, going steak to steak with his former boss. “Now we’ve got locations in Miami, New Jersey, Japan, Seoul, Philippines and the next one to go on line is Singapore,” Nickerson says.
You can count on continuity; you’ll get the same steak in Japan as you would in New Jersey.

“When you go to any Wolfgang’s, you can count on continuity; you’ll get the same steak in Japan as you would in New Jersey.” Aside from starting with the best quality meat available to an elite cadre of upscale restaurants, Wolfgang’s takes a step further in dry-aging their steaks for 28 days, an optimum time that allows enzymes naturally present in the meat to break down the muscle tissue, resulting in improved texture and flavor.
“You get intense marbling and an earthy, nutty flavor,” Nickerson explains. “Because of evaporation that occurs during the process, we lose about 30 percent to 40 percent of the initial weight, but the end result, in my opinion, is superior to wet aging.” While acknowledging the other popular steakhouses around the island, Nickerson asserts that only Wolfgang’s can be called a true “Prime” steakhouse. “I don’t think any of the other restaurants can say that,” he says. “And there’s only one other steakhouse that dry ages their beef on premise like we do.” Steaks here are broiled at 1600 degrees Fahrenheit for a blackened crust, and are served sizzling hot to preferred temperature. Steak cuts include filet mignon, New York sirloin and rib eye. Like other traditional steakhouses, sides are ordered a la carte, offering guests such options as jumbo baked potato, cottage or steak fries, sautéed onions, lobster mac and cheese, and sautéed mushrooms. Every table should start with a few thick cuts of sizzling Canadian bacon dipped in the house special sauce. For a greener route, try the Wolfgang’s salad, consisting of a crisp lettuce cup, garnished with green beans, tomatoes, red peppers, onions, bacon bits and shrimp then tossed in a light vinaigrette. “It was a delightful experience,” writes Marotto in an email after returning to Victoria, B.C. “We’re obsessed with food so this story has extra significance. In fact, it was one of the highlights of our trip.” WHERE’S THE BEEF? Ask about the lunch specials Happy Hour runs daily from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Craving Chinese food?
How about Mexican, Japanese, American or Vietnamese? As Waikīkī’s only “food court,” Pā‘ina Lānai offers an international selection of cuisines, from pho and ramen to steak and pizza to puff pastries and açai bowls. Champion’s Steak & Seafood In the past decade, Hawai‘i’s dining scene has seen a proliferation of fastfood restaurants offering steak plates. But unlike those other places, where the beef is sliced into pieces, the New York striploin at Champion’s is served whole. Tender and lean the 8-ounce cut is well seasoned and prepared to an ideal medium-rare temperature. A side salad and two scoops of rice turn this into a hearty lunch or dinner. Other menu items include shrimp, fish and chicken.
