“
Nou ka hale, our house is your house. Day or night, Royal Hawaiian Center—our unique, Hawaiian, world-class destination— is ready to welcome you with hospitality and aloha!
”
It is with tremendous pleasure that I welcome you, on behalf of our entire ‘ohana (family), to Royal Hawaiian Center here at Helumoa, Waikīkī. With over 100 shops and restaurants and an extensive cultural and entertainment program, we offer you a most unique shopping experience. Fronting three blocks of Hawai‘i’s famed Kalākaua Avenue, Royal Hawaiian Center stands upon land that was once owned by the ali‘i (Hawaiian nobility). Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop who made Helumoa her home in the latter 1800s, composed her last will and testament bequeathing her estate for the purpose of providing for education for Native Hawaiians. In 1887, Kamehameha Schools, named for her great-grandfather who united all of the chiefdoms of the Hawaiian islands under one rule in 1810, opened its doors. The land beneath Royal Hawaiian Center is still owned by the Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate. 4 i R oyal

Aloha Nui!
Pauahi maintains her place here at Helumoa in a statue built to her likeness that makes its home in our Royal Grove. There, Pauahi sits with a keiki (youngster) enjoying the passing day. Pauahi’s legacy and Hawaiian heritage are celebrated through our cultural-arts classes, which take place several times throughout the week. Kumu hula Puake‘ala Mann teaches both ‘ukulele and hula and is always a joy to learn from. Wainani Yim also teaches ‘ukulele inside Helumoa Hale, our Guest Services center just off of the Royal Grove. Uncle Tom Cummings’ story-telling hours throughout the week are great fun for the whole family, too! And don’t forget, of course, our lei-making classes and our lomi (massage) demonstrations, too. For a comprehensive schedule of all of our cultural programming, including our fantastic entertainment calendar, visit royalhawaiiancenter.com. No laila e o‘u mau hoa, nou nō kēia hale nei ‘o ka Royal Hawaiian Center. E kipa mai! And so, my dear friends, our Royal Hawaiian Center is your home. You are welcome here.

hile here to unveil the new two-level Tourneau shop, Larry Barkley Sr. remarked that the store went from about 1,400-1,500 square feet to approximately 4,000 square feet of retail space. “We wanted to expand and have a better presence on the island,” said Barkley, Tourneau’s senior vice president of retail across the U.S. “We’re in one of the best shopping centers here at the Royal Hawaiian Center.” The renovation started in early 2014 and features a new multilevel design with specialized boutiques for many of the premier luxury watch brands, including Cartier, Vacheron Constantin, Panerai, IWC and Breitling. “This expansion, though, now allows us to have an entry-level point to accessible luxury watches,” Barkley noted. “In the beginning we just carried high-end brands, but now we have everything from Patek Philippe and Rolex to G-Shock and Casio. I think we have it all covered under one roof.” Building C, Levels 1 and 2, 808.922.4111, tourneau.com H awai ia n ce n t e r

The
Conqueror: Ka Na‘i Aupuni Kamehameha Day: A Memorable Commemoration of Royal Heritage By Manu Boyd
Hau‘oli lā Kamehameha iā kākou—Happy Kamehameha
Day to all! For generations, islanders have celebrated on June 11 in honor of the warrior chief and conqueror, ka na‘i aupuni, of these islands—King Kamehameha I. Once a national holiday of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Kamehameha Day is now a state observance, complete with parades, concerts, lū‘au festivities and a two-day hula competition. Pai‘ea Kamehameha was born in the early-to-mid-18th century at Kokoiki, North Kohala, on the island of Hawai‘i. (Historians have placed his birth between 1736 and 1758—a discrepancy based on oral traditions.) Kamehameha’s mother was Keku‘iapoiwa, and his father, Keōua, was a brother of Kalani‘ōpu‘u, ruler of Hawai‘i Island. Kahekili, son of Maui ruler Kekaulike, was thought by many, however, to be Kamehameha’s true father. For this reason, he was considered po‘olua—having two fathers—and inherited chiefly mana (power) from both.

Royal Hawaiian Center proudly celebrates our Hawaiian heritage, and the land upon which the Center stands is owned by Kamehameha Schools, established in 1887 by the will of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, great-granddaughter of Kamehameha I. These lands, called Helumoa, have long been associated with the ali‘i (nobility) including Kamehameha I and those many generations before him. Join us at Royal Hawaiian Center for the King Kamehameha Celebration Parade, Saturday, June 13. Beginning in downtown Honolulu at 9 a.m., near the lei-draped statue of King Kamehameha, the parade will make its way through Waikīkī along Kalākaua Avenue, ending at Queen Kapi‘olani Park. Highlights include floral floats, marching bands, dignitaries, celebrities and colorful pā‘ū units with women on horseback wearing flowing satin skirts (pā‘ū) and colorful flower lei representing each Hawaiian island. Throughout his life, Kamehameha witnessed much change, particularly with the coming of the first westerners in 1778. He was quick to adapt to new technology and brought foreign advisors under his wing to assist in his military. He also initiated international relations through the sandalwood trade with China. Change notwithstanding, Kamehameha held fast to his traditional beliefs and customs. By 1810, he had brought the once individually ruled island chiefdoms under single rule. After his passing in 1819, he would be succeeded by two sons and two grandsons, establishing the Kamehameha Dynasty. The Kamehameha Day observance was first proclaimed by King Kamehameha V in 1871—not as a birthday celebration, but a means to honor his kupunakāne (grandfather). It is said that June 11 was selected to rival the Fourth of July celebrations gaining in popularity with the growing American population. According to traditional ko‘ihonua, or genealogical chants, Kamehameha’s birth month was during the ‘Ikuā season, “when thunder

hough draped on countless visitors at Honolulu International Airport daily, flower lei are not just for greeting travelers. The tradition of giving and wearing lei is a Hawaiian tradition as old as any other. Native Hawaiians used lei for centuries not only for adornment, but also as a way to distinguish class differences and for ceremonial purposes. Certain lei were used for peace treaty signings between chiefs and for religious purposes at their temples. In modern times, lei are given to friends and family to celebrate milestones and special occasions, such as birthdays, graduations, wedding, and retirements. At social functions, the guest of honor is given lei, and the materials used in the lei can signify the importance of the wearer. The maile leaf lei, an open-ended lei woven from the fragrant leaves of a native vine, is reserved for special and formal occasions—it is also used in hula performances. It is one of the oldest styles of lei, going back to the days of the ancient Hawaiians. Learn to make a lei at Royal Hawaiian Center. See the schedule of free cultural activities on page 8.

nimated and engaging, Tom Cummings, affectionately known as Uncle Tom, can weave an entertaining story. As a mea ha‘i mo‘olelo, master storyteller, Cummings believes that storytelling is a Hawaiian art form that is every bit as important as hula, navigation, basketry and lauhala weaving. Unpacking a suitcase filled with feathered lei, old images of Waikīkī, a conch shell, coconut husk, tapa and other teaching props, Cummings begins the task of neatly spreading out his material on a kapacovered table. “I’m a storyteller with stuff,” Cummings smiles. “I find the best way to engage people is to provide them with something visual.” As passersby gather in front of him, the Maui native begins his storytelling, starting first with the kukui nut and its various uses, from oil and soap to lei and candle. A more than 40-year veteran of storytelling, Cummings has the ability to convey his tales that manage to earn a lot of applause and nods of understanding, despite language barriers. A South Korean couple, for example, responded with wide smiles when they finally understood H awai ia n ce n t e r

that the feathers from an ‘Ĺ?‘Ĺ? (forest bird) were used to make capes for kane (men), and lei and bracelets for wahine (women). “A million feathers,â€? says Cummings, gesturing a #1 with his index finger then forming six circles to get across the idea of the amount of plumage that’s required to create a single cape. Holding up an 8-inch cylindrical bamboo, Cummings demonstrates how holes would have been bored into the wood using a nao wili (pump drill) in order to create a flute. Pressing the instrument to his nostril, attendees were puzzled at first until they heard a couple of bars, which was greeted by widened eyes and enthusiastic claps. And when Cummings blew into the conch shell sounding off three deep bass toots, they applauded even louder. “I’ve met people from Slovakia, Lithuania and all over the world,â€? Cummings says. “I share stories that are little known. “And then I make a mess,â€? quips the gifted storyteller, as he again begins to arrange his “stuffâ€? on the table in preparation for the next group of listeners. Cummings’ storytelling sessions are held three times a week in front of Helumoa Hale at the Royal Grove. See schedule on page 8.

he road to happiness starts and ends at Doraku Sushi. At least that’s the ambition of owner Kevin Aoki. Since opening his first concept restaurant in South Beach, Fla., in 2000, the son of the late Benihana founder, Rocky Aoki, has filled a niche that falls somewhere in between a zen retreat and a bohemian hangout. Buddha heads, Southeast Asian drums and stone sculptures lend an exotic element to the room while also offering a dramatic juxtaposition to the black-and-red-themed bar and faux reclaimed wood. “It’s loungey, relaxed and upbeat,” says manager Dave Bass. “It’s about making friends—or meeting them—over good food.” Aoki modeled Doraku after an izakaya, the Japanese version of a gastropub. Like its American counterpart, the menu here is extensive, ranging from sushi and cold/ hot dishes to desserts and sake/cocktails. While the South Beach location emphasizes its fusion with Latin cuisine —rightfully so given the area’s large Central and South American population—this Hawai‘i outpost likes to describe its cuisine as Pan-Asian with a touch of cilantro, tomatillo and, yes, garlic chips. Ample selections can be found under the “Sushi + Sashimi” heading. Guests can play it safe and order the ubiquitous summer, dragon or caterpillar roll. But they can opt instead to take their taste buds on an adventure and try the kagu-tsuchi “God of Fire,” a spicy tuna roll folded with cucumbers and jalapeno, and topped with habanero masago and spicy garlic aioli; or the white dragon roll, prepared with shrimp tempura and avocado then 60
garnished with hamachi, unagi sauce, ao nori, garlic aioli and garlic chips. “We offer quality food but are not overcharging for it,” Bass asserts. “You won’t break the wallet if you come here with friends.” This is especially true if you’re with a large party, allowing each guest to order one or two dishes from the different categories. In addition to sushi rolls, an array of sashimi choices includes a 12-piece deluxe platter of kampachi (Hawaiian yellowtail), ono (wahoo), tuna, salmon, yellowtail and chutoro (fatty tuna); a 12-piece plate of nigiri that includes sea urchin, ikura (salmon caviar), scallop, eel, tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, ika (squid), nairagi (striped marlin), kampachi and ono; and a combination of sushi and sashimi. Visibly and audibly pleased with their lunch selections, a group of young women on spring vacation huddled around one of the booths as they shared a variety of sushi rolls, sashimi, tempura and chicken karaage. Meanwhile, at a neighboring table, a couple of guests sipped on tea as they enjoyed their chirashi donburi and teriyaki chicken. Two of the menu highlights include the pan-seared salmon served with asparagus and artistically garnished with colorful wisps of carrots, daikon and green onions; and the seafood salad composed of large chunks of diced tuna, salmon, yellowtail, mango, tomatoes and a mix of spring greens. “Doraku is a restaurant, bar and gathering place that celebrates Japanese food, drink and hospitality,” Aoki says on the restaurant’s website. “It’s a place to have fun with friends or to unwind after a long day at work. It is the commitment to quality and attention to detail that make the Doraku experience live up to the meaning of its name — the road to happiness.”

t was a match made in soup heaven when Billy Giang first met Krystal Zhao. Now married and owners of Pho Factory, the couple fell in love over a bowl of pho noodles prepared by Giang’s grandmother, Thiep Dang, who fled her native Vietnam and settled in Hawai‘i in 1981. “We asked her for a lot of help when we first opened,” says Krystal Giang. “She showed us the proper way to prepare her recipes.” Pronounced “fuh,” pho is the popular Vietnamese noodle soup known for its aromatic smell. The medley of rice, noodles and meat is accompanied by fresh vegetables and herbs, including bean sprouts, basil, mint, lime and peppers. In addition to pho, the eatery also offers a Saigon special, which includes barbecue chicken, pork chop, short ribs and an over-easy egg; vermicelli entrees; sandwiches; and assorted fried rice. “Chinese soup is too oily and Japanese soup is too clean,” Krystal Giang notes. “Vietnamese pho is right in the middle; it’s perfect.” Building B, Level 2, 808.922.1888, phofactoryusa.com

hile well-known for its Mongolian beef and lettuce wraps, P.F. Chang’s has crossed the border with its latest menu items—specialty sushi. The new sushi menu is Asianinspired and Hawai‘i-infused, according to Hawai‘i-based chef Grant Kawasaki, who developed the menu for P.F. Chang’s. “I chose many local ingredients including fresh fish, local produce, spices and sauces to create one-of-a-kind sushi rolls that blend Hawaiian and Asian culinary experiences to create sushi masterpieces,” says Kawasaki, a host of two local cable network TV cooking shows. New sushi rolls include the Waikīkī, a play on the rainbow roll, which is enveloped with spicy ahi, cucumber, kaiware sprouts and enoki mushrooms; the Aloha, a lobstersalad-and-asparagus roll; the Mahalo, a deluxe version of the California roll; and the Shaka, made with ahi poke and lomi salmon. “The new sushi menu offers a range of options and tastes that appeal to sushi aficionados, as well as novices,” says Ed Locke, P.F.
