aloha mai kakou! Welcome to the Royal Hawaiian Center, Waikīkī’s largest and most Hawaiian shopping complex. We are especially proud to be located on the royal grounds of Helumoa where the welcoming traditions of aloha and Hawaiian hospitality were first established by King Mā‘ilikukahi in the 15th century. We are in the midst of celebrating a centuries-old Hawaiian art-form using the leaves of the pandanus tree, called lauhala. In the hands of skilled weavers, the lauhala leaves are specially prepared and intricately plaited into highly sophisticated weaving patterns with a stunning degree of fineness. They are woven and crafted into hats, baskets, mats and carpets, apparel, hand fans, art pieces, and a host of decorative and functional products. We celebrate the art of lauhala weaving as a metaphor for your time here with us at the Royal Hawaiian Center as a carefully integrated set of experiences woven into a grand tapestry of sights, sounds, tastes, smells and touches of aloha. 4 i Royal

Style Report eport The fall season welcomes lovely hues and sassy accessories.

Something miraculous happened within the compounds of Mānoa Valley’s green and notoriously moist Lyon Arboretum during the production of the Royal Hawaiian Center’s fashion shoot: it didn’t rain. The clouds agreed to separate and thin out for once, while the sun glowed the rest of the day behind shades of umbrella-like trees. Adorned in the latest fashions from the Center,

Left: Swimsuit and pareo, Allure Swimwear; earrings, necklace and bracelet, Kobe Jewelry. Middle: Dress: Tory Burch; earrings, Aloha Aina Boutique; ring, Kobe Jewelry; watch, Tourneau. Right: Top, skirt, shoes, bracelet and watch, kate spade new york; clutch, Anteprima Wirebag; earrings, Harry Winston; necklace, Western Classics.

models Kylee Dashefsky and Courtney Coleman glided through this lush tropical rainforest known for its world-renowned collection of more than 5,000 tropical plant species. Outfits of deep plum and maroon imitated the hues of bromeliads and orchids, while their bold yet classic patterns and shapes evoked bamboo and fern. Timeless jewelry pieces completed the lovely fall ensembles.

>> R STYLE TIP: Create your outfit around favorite staple pieces, such as a colorful necklace or gladiator high-heels.

xotic images of the South Pacific come to mind when we think of Bali Hai, the popular show tune from the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. But now shoppers can also imagine bright colors and light fabrics with the opening a new 500-square-foot boutique. Located on the first floor of the Royal Hawaiian Center, Bali Hai— whose sister shop is Pashma—carries a collection of chic resort wear and accessories that are made of high quality Supima cotton, silk, cashmere, hemp and natural materials. Inspired by Hawai‘i’s scenery, the bright and colorful prints evoke an island lifestyle of sunbathing under warm, sun-kissed skies and strolling along golden strands of sand. In a released statement, designer Shilu Kumar says that even though she was born in Bali, her first visit to the Hawaiian Islands left a huge impression due to the natural beauty and hospitality of its people. It’s with this in mind that she designs elegant and versatile apparel and accessories, which look just as natural at a resort as they would in the workplace. Healing Hands

LEARN THE PRINCIPLES OF A LOMILOMI MASSAGE By Simplicio Paragas

omilomi simply means “to knead” or “to rub” in Hawaiian. In ancient times, lomilomi was practiced as both medicinal and restorative. This indigenous Hawaiian healing was practiced by Kahuna lā‘au lapa‘au (native healers) and was used as a curative health practice within families. An endearing alternate name for lomilomi is “loving hands,” which is an appropriate term for this work since the technique requires gentle kneading into the muscles with continuous, flowing strokes. Hawaiian lomilomi massage applies pressure to the recipient by leaning into them, using tools of the body including lima (hands and arms), ku‘eku‘e lima (elbows) and even wāwae (feet). Different parts of the body may be massaged at the same time, which is especially soothing. Gentle stretches of the limbs and torso, as well as rotations of the joints are also incorporated to assist the release of tensions and assist the flow of energy. Because the practitioner works intuitively, a massage may be slow and very relaxing or more invigorating and enlivening to the body. Take a lomilomi lesson at the Center (see schedule on page 10). ala trees were once so widespread that they have their own migration story. Hawaiian legend tells of the fire goddess Pele and her travels from Tahiti to Hawai‘i. At the edges of Hilo on Hawai‘i Island, she encounters a giant hala tree, whose thorny leaves ensnare her. Her brother Pa‘ao arrives to find her hopelessly bound. He climbs the tree and pours saltwater onto its branches, wilting the young leaves and freeing Pele from their grip. Fortunately for us, the damage is already done. Pele is fuming. She rips the leaves from their branches and sends them scattering across the islands. Where they landed, hala flourished. Today, you have to go looking for hala to find it. Many of the famous lowland groves were cleared for sugarcane or pastureland, and the hala that once grew in wild abundance along the windward coasts now compete for space and sunlight with introduced ironwood and sea almond trees. Prior to contact with the West, hala was a kind of “Giving Tree.” Hawaiians found use for all

parts: its roots for medicine and cordage; its trunk for house posts, calabashes and piping. The flowers (hīnano) produce a heady fragrance and were used to perfume clothing and bedding. Hala fruit is actually a cluster of 50 or so individual fruitlets, which are still strung today into striking lei of yellow, orange and red hues. R OYAL HAWAI I AN C EN TER

A hala’s most generous gifts though are its leaves, called lau. Once cleaned, softened and stripped, they can be woven into tight checkerboard patterns that are as elegant as they are useful. Through ulana—the plaiting of hala leaves—Hawaiian women fashioned life’s basic comforts: mats for sleeping, covering floors and gathering salt; wall thatching and roof lining; pillows; fans; and baskets. Ulana made daily life in old Hawai‘i a little easier. It also made life a little more adventurous. The sails that moved canoes along the ocean highways were also woven from lau hala. With the influx of foreign trade in the 1800s came new options, and the novelty and convenience of ready-made goods pushed ulana lau hala towards obsolescence. Ironically, what helped preserve the craft is as American as Abe Lincoln—the stovepipe hat. Hawaiian men began wearing lau hala replicas of the missionaries’ top hats in the mid46 i Royal

1800s. The brims grew wider and the crowns shorter over time until eventually, they became the pāpale, a quintessentially Hawaiian hat. Hat-wearing dipped in the post-war years and demand for pāpale softened, but it never dried up completely. There’s a familyrun store just outside of Kona called Kimura Lauhala Shop. It opened as a general store in 1914, but the pāpale made by local weavers has been its bread-and-butter for almost a century. Happily, lau hala plaiting is on the mend, thanks to master weavers like Gladys Grace, Ed Kaneko and Elizabeth Maluihi Lee. They reacted to their shrinking numbers in a way that would surely make Pele proud—by spreading the lau far and wide. In the 1990s, they began organizing weaving groups and conferences to pass on the knowledge of ulana and all the wisdom and tradition it holds. Indeed, ulana lau hala is the light that shines on the hala fruit, and it gets a little brighter every day.

he hashtag #ITBAG2015 has attracted new Valentino followers who voted, pressed “Like” and shared the fashion giant’s top handle bags. Since the 1990s, the holy grail of the fashionista has been that elusive arm candy, the “It Bag,” once described in Vogue as “that totemic accessory that announced you were owner of all that was desirable in the world.” An ad campaign that touts “the key to a flourishing future is in the bag” may well prove true for Valentino, which will release its Valentino Garavani single handle bag (pictured above) in Alce printed ivory calfskin with gold-toned metal hardware, a detachable strap and a leather name tag with new V logo. Seen on the arms of celebrities and dignitaries around the world, Valentino’s collection of bags includes minaudières, clutches and totes, double handle bags, shoulder bags and backpacks. Synonymous with luxury products, Valentino also carries a wide range of haute couture and prêt-àporter, as well as other accessories. Building C, Levels 1 and 3, 808.922.3870

hile rummaging through her late dad’s personal belongings, Debbie Nakanelua-Richards came across an Aloha Week pin that dated back to 1947, only the second year after this Hawaiian celebration was founded. It was a feel-good moment for the former Miss Hawai‘i and a reminder of the importance and significance of this cultural event. “When I see people from all over the world standing shoulder to shoulder on Kalākaua Avenue, I get chicken skin,” says NakaneluaRichards, co-chairwoman of Aloha Festivals, which was renamed from Aloha Week in 1991. “This is what Aloha Festivals is all about—bringing locals and visitors together.” More than just “hello” or “goodbye,” aloha is a way of living and being. And each year, Aloha Festivals shares this through Hawai‘i’s music, dance and history with the intent of perpetuating our unique traditions. In addition to old customs, the Aloha Festivals also chooses a theme to spotlight a vital component in modern Hawaiian culture. This year’s theme, “Hulu Aloha — Beloved Feather Treasures,” recognizes the tradition and mastery of feather works of

Hawai‘i. The kahili (feather standard), ahu‘ula (cloaks), mahiole (helmet), and lei are treasured works of art that distinguished the ali‘i (ruling class) of the Hawaiian Kingdom. “We invite the community to take part in Aloha Festivals’ celebration of Hawai‘i’s cultural heritage, aloha and island traditions,” says Helene “Sam” Shenkus, co-chair of the Aloha Festivals’ board of directors. Aloha Festivals kicks off Sept. 5 at the Coconut Grove at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel with the investiture and opening of the Aloha Festivals Royal Court, as ali‘i court members (king, queen, prince and princess) will receive the royal cloak, helmet and head feather lei. The Court proceeds to the Royal Hawaiian Center’s Royal Grove where traditional chant and hula will be performed. “The Royal Hawaiian Center and Hawaiian Airlines have been major supporters of Aloha Festivals for years,” says Shenkus, whos is also the Center’s marketing director. “It’s important that we perpetuate the Hawaiian culture.” On Sept. 19, the Waikīkī Ho‘olaule‘a hits the streets for the island’s largest block party of the year. On Sept. 26, the festival closes out with its beautiful Floral Parade as a procession of horseback riders, hula halau, marching bands and colorful floats filled with Hawaiian flowers make their way from Ala Moana Beach Park to Kapiolani Park. The reason for the thousands of visitors and locals in attendance each year is evident, according to Shenkus. “The world is full of beautiful beaches and beautiful hotels and world-class environments. There are many other places you could go in the world,” she says. “But there is only one with aloha spirit.” For more information and a complete schedule of events, visit www.alohafestivals.com.

nown to many as the City of Light, Paris illuminates this season with Cartier’s new Paris Nouvelle Vague collection. Each jewelry piece is exclusively chosen to shine and represent the city’s bustling nightlife, fashionable parties, Baroque architecture and—of course—irresistible romances. Visitors are introduced to the magnificent pieces of art and craftsmanship in curved rings of black jade and long necklaces with cultured pearls. The beloved Paris Nouvelle Vague necklace is inspired by the iconic and soon-to-be “unlocked” Pont des Arts “Love Lock” bridge in Paris. Pink gold latticework and padlock-designed gems of amethysts, aquamarines, tourmalines, spinels and diamonds adorn the décolleté of a person in love. Although the city of Paris will remove the locks by the end of this year, your necklace will be a remembrance of all those who have loved and perhaps lost ... but never forgotten. Midday Menus Restaurants offer special dishes in between lunch and dinner By Simplicio Paragas

e’ve all heard the ages-old adage “It’s cocktail hour somewhere.” It’s a rationale that often absolves vacationers of their guilt of having a drink before the socially accepted 6 p.m. However, science has proven that crossing the international dateline does throw off one’s circadian rhythms, leading to physical, mental and, yes, even alcohol and food intake changes. Therefore for some it may be too late for lunch and for others it may be too early for dinner. And while fast food is always an option, a better compromise is what Royal Hawaiian Center restaurants tout as their “Midday Menus.” Beijing Chinese Seafood Restaurant It would be hard for some aspect of dim sum not to “touch your heart,” as one of the translations of the term dim sum indicates. Everyone can pick a favorite from the innumerable little dishes prepared in a multitude of ways — fried, sautéed, steamed or baked — with assorted sweet or savory fillings, ranging from chives and shrimp to pork and beef. While Beijing’s dim sum menu is limited to 26 items, its a la carte menu offers a greater number of Cantonese, Shanghai, Peking and Sichuan dishes. Receive a 20 percent discount off the entire menu between 3 and 4:45 p.m. Building C, Level 3, 808.971.8833

Doraku Sushi The road to happiness starts and ends at Doraku Sushi. And somewhere in between, guests can try the popular summer, dragon or caterpillar roll. Adventurous diners can opt instead to take the road less traveled and try the kagu-tsuchi “God of Fire,” a spicy tuna roll folded with cucumbers and jalapeno, and topped with habanero masago and spicy garlic aioli; or the white dragon roll, prepared with shrimp tempura and avocado then garnished with hamachi, unagi sauce, ao nori, garlic aioli and garlic chips. “Doraku is a restaurant, bar and gathering place that celebrates Japanese food, drink and hospitality,” Aoki says on the restaurant’s website. “It’s a place to have fun with friends or to unwind after a long day at work. It is the commitment to quality and attention to detail that make the Doraku experience live up to the meaning of its name — the road to happiness.” Building B, Level 3, 808.922.3323 Il Lupino Trattoria Translated to “Little Wolf,” Il Lupino offers a satisfying selection of dishes priced at $8 each until 6:30 p.m. Juicy burger sliders are accompanied by truffle fries and pepper aioli; bruschetta topped with sashimi-grade yellowfin tuna and apple-ginger-and-citrus vinaigrette; ROY A L H AWA I I A N C E N T E R

veal-pork-and-beef meatball atop a bed of Pomodoro sauce; a pizza garnished with mozzarella and Pomodoro; and calamari fritte served with arrabiata sauce. Building B, Level 1, 808.922.3400 Okonomiyaki Chibo Popular in Osaka and Hiroshima, okonomiyaki is a style of cuisine that dates back to the Edo period. After World War II, a food shortage across Japan helped boost the dish’s popularity since its ingredients were relatively available and inexpensive. “Back then, though, it was only a snack made of flour and soybean paste,” explains Akira Kashimura, vice president for Okonomiyaki Chibo Restaurant. “But now, we’ve modernized it and it can be prepared with many different ingredients.” In addition to its regular menu, midday offerings, from 3 to 6 p.m., include tako poke, ribeye steak and hamburger steak, each for $11. Building A, Level 3, 808.922.9722 P.F. Chang’s The idea was simple: introduce Chinese cuisine with an American-style sensibility. It was a paradigm shift aimed to reconceptualize the mainstream image of this type of ethnic restaurant. And it worked. A cursory review of the menu reveals a laundry list of common Chinese dishes, ranging from wonton and hot-and-sour soups, to Sichuan beef and spicy kung pao chicken, to fried rice and dan dan noodles. And if you’re gluten sensitive, P.F. Chang’s is one of only a few restaurant chains that offers a dedicated menu to diners who must 60

adhere to a strict gluten-free diet. Sushi rolls were also recently introduced to the menu. Building A, Levels 1 & 2, 808.628.6760 Restaurant Suntory At the sushi bar, tradition trumps contemporary, and presentation is straightforward. Chefs pride themselves in staying true to the essence of Japanese cuisine, which demands flavors be subtle and fresh. An order of petit sashimi yields a briny tasting of salmon, ahi, ika and snapper, each sliced thickly—and not paper thin like at some restaurants. Be sure to try the ahi poke mixed with onions and bits of avocado. Building B, Level 3, 808.922.5511 Wolfgang’s Steakhouse Dinner can be a pricey affair at this traditional steakhouse but if you’re sitting in the bar area, count your lucky sevens. For $7 each, guests can order steak, hamburger or kalbi sliders; ahi or steak tartare; tenderloin kebab; lobster crostini; and a mini loco moco. It’s not on the $7 list but be sure to order a side of Wolfgang’s sizzling, thick-sliced Canadian bacon. Building C, Level 3, 808.922.3600 And of course, don’t forget the libations since it is always cocktail hour somewhere.

So now she impersonates her in the high-octane “Rock-A-Hula.” “Over the years, I have developed a true love for the Mother Monster [a name used among devout Lady Gaga fans] and her show-stopping performances,” says Allen in a released statement. “I am so excited to bring the spirit of Lady Gaga to the heart of Waikīkī and hope that the audience is inspired by her music as much as I am.” Joining Lady Gaga on stage is Michael Jackson played by J Lucas.
