Fiesta celebration commemorates the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto with parades, events and festivities bigger than ever before. The origins of this Alamo City tradition can be traced to 1891, when a group of San Antonio women decided to honor the heroes of the Alamo and Battle of San Jacinto with a parade. Today, this signature 10-day fête encompasses concerts, mini-festivals, art exhibits and more. Attendance reaches roughly 3.5 million each year, with events like the St. Mary’s Oyster Bake, the equestrian competition at A Day in Old Mexico’s Charreada and the kid-friendly Fiesta Carnival. www.fiesta-sa.org

PIT STOPS

Where There’s Smoke... By Janis Turk

ecause of their Texas cattle baron and cowboy-centric history, locals have long enjoyed a Texas-sized love affair with barbecue; and everyone from the Alamo to Austin knows that the best barbecue in the Lone Star state may be found in nearby Lockhart, a.k.a. the “barbecue capital of Texas.” Of course, even New Yorkers and Hollywood types know of Austin-area destinations like Franklin Barbecue and The Salt Lick. But there’s no need to drive that far: For great San Antonio barbecue with sauce that drips down your wrists as you eat it, look no further than these local favorites. The Smoke Shack is a moveable feast (OK—it’s a food truck), but it’s worth finding for some fabulous barbecue. They’ve also got a brick-andmortar restaurant on Broadway across

from the Witte Museum in Alamo Heights, where some might not expect to find the best San Antonio barbecue. Still, if you ask locals, many will say it’s the best in town. Owner Chris Conger has been passionate about barbecue since he worked at Dallas’ James Beard-recognized restaurant SMOKE, fueling his desire to open his own place. After four years of serving brisket from his popular food truck, Conger and his wife opened the Broadway Smoke Shack. Look for the rooftop painted with a bold Texas flag. Augie’s Barbed Wire Smokehouse is a down-home barbecue shack with corrugated tin add-on rooms, picnic tables and a big pink pig on a pole for its sign, nestled on St. Mary’s Street near the Tea Gardens and the zoo. and live music, Augie’s is best known for its pork ribs, brisket plates and zingy jalapeño sausage. (There’s an Augie’s Alamo City BBQ Steakhouse on Broadway too.) The folks at the Pearl’s Granary Cue & Brew started with small-batch craft beer at the Granary, then realized what good barbecue and homemade pickles they could make, too. “The Brown Ale served with brisket ramen is one of my favorite pairings,” said Tiffany Ruiz, a server at The Granary. “ [The] dinner menu shows elements of smoke and live fire and boasts flavors of uniquely combined farm-to-fork products.” Two Bros. BBQ Market Chef Jason Dady is a household name in San Antonio, where his many restaurants in town include Tre Trattoria, Tre Enoteca and his new Shuck Shack oyster and seafood restaurant, located within walking distance of the Pearl. He and his brother Jake, also a chef, own both Two Bros. BBQ Market and Southtown’s B&D Ice House. The Dady brothers call it “True Texas Pitto-Table BBQ” and take pride in how “low-and-slow” meats are smoked over oak in custom-made pits before being cut to order. Folks expect a lot from local celebrity chefs, and Dady doesn’t disappoint. While the barbecue here is good (we’re talking cherry glazed ribs, for goodness sake), the side dishes are also big hits: The baked beans are infused with peaches—and, believe it or not, they’re wonderful. Similarly, Chef Johnny Hernandez

Two Bros. BBQ

is known for his Mexican street foods at his popular La Gloria and The Fruteria restaurants, but he’s also fantastic behind a barbecue grill. At home, he makes barbacoa in a pit he dug in his backyard, but you can still get the experience at his restaurant El Machito. The first thing you’ll see there is a grill full of meat—whole goats on a spit, sausages, chicken, beef, ribs, and more. It’s incredible. This is barbecue, San Antonio-style: There’s no smoky barbecue sauce and mustard potato salad, but there is guacamole, queso, sangria, and margaritas (which is even better). At the BBQ Station, grill masters Zac and Freddy serve “no-frills barbecue done right,” with “mahogany-skinned chicken, tasty beef ribs and addictive jalapeño mac and cheese.” Housed in an old Exxon station, the family-owned joint opened in 1992 as a place for patrons to enjoy the same kind of barbecue found in small Texas towns like Lockhart. Today, it serves some of the best traditional wood-smoked ‘cue and scratch-made sides around. wheretraveler.com •

Texas, Uncorked Ripe with vineyards, wineries and scenic Hill Country views, the Texas Wine Trail is anything but ordinary. By Jaimie Siegle

t’s no secret that Texas’ fine wine scene is on the upswing, with various regional wineries taking home accolades from prestigious events such as the 2016 San Francisco International Wine Competition, among others. With consumers wanting to “shop local,” and “eat local,”uncorking a locally made bottle of vino from Texas or other lesser known wine regions is only starting to catch on.

Nevertheless, regional familyowned wineries that are making waves among oenophiles around the world. In fact, outside of Napa, the “Texas Wine Trail” is one of the most-visited destinations in the U.S. for wine enthusiasts: The state’s wine scene draws nearly a million tourists each year. “Texas consumers really support Texas wines,” says wine industry vet Greg Stokes, a consultant and

Visit San Antonio’s theme park for the brain! Imagine a spectacular learning environment focused on concepts in science, technology, engineering and math, integrated with literacy and arts in a way that makes learning so fun kids—and parents—won’t want to leave. Be a spy, an artist, a builder, a musician, or an inventor. Dance up a musical staircase and hang out with a real live robot. The DoSeum is more than just a children’s museum; it’s a family playground. Don’t bother telling them it’s a haven for interactive education. Just say you’re going to the coolest playground in all of Texas!

“This is by far the most spectacular children’s museum we have been to. Our kids are STILL talking about it. Everything was 5-star. Well done, San Antonio.”
