couples who incorporated their canine (and feline) friends into their special day. Some beloved pets star in the getting ready and pre-ceremony photos, while others are serving as ring bearers and attendants. Recently, People Magazine featured a bride from Charlotte, North Carolina and her bridesmaids who swapped out their bouquets for adoptable shelter puppies for the bridal party photographs. You can only imagine my giggles of glee when photographer Kelly Park and I met for coffee several months ago and she mentioned having their current litter of UK Labrador puppies on set. “Puppies” was all I really remember hearing and I was “all in!” Kelly’s dog, Preacher, is from Scotland and believe it or not, he (well, Scotland) became our inspiration.

Let Them Eat Cake Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis Pastry Chef Jeanine Edmonds Mott, who found her true love in St. Louis, says of the city “It’s so overlooked as a destination for weddings– the history, architecture, the culture, the music, the parks, the seasons… I took the leap here and I’m always inspired by the beauty of this city.” Traditions are important, but she says, “Your celebration can be a big party or an elegant sit-down dinner– what’s important is that everyone come together to celebrate your union and share a meal together. You should get exactly what you want.” And what’s more important than that? Saying “I do.” And cake.

When it comes to making Pinterestworthy weddings for her guests, Robin Albach, Director of Catering at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis is known for making things go off without a hitch. “There’s a new trend that we see with couples eloping, trying to de-stress the wedding experience. I love it, it’s crazy and romantic!” Helping to bring the focus back to the bride and groom is just one of her skills. Marshalling her behind-the-scenes team of professionals, Robin removes complications and guesswork for those hoping to elope, attending the myriad of details that can bog down happy couples. With The Ultimate Elopement Package, everything a bride desires- from cake and flowers, officiant, food and photography, champagne to wedding night bridal suite is included. “All weddings are unique and personal, but every bride needs to be taken care of so that she can have a great time without compromising her vision. 6 The Fashion Team (1-6) 1 KELLY PARK Kelly Park has been photographing couples and families since 2004. Labrador Retrievers are also a passion for Kelly and her family. When STL Bride asked her to be a part of the new issue, Kelly was thrilled to include her Labrador, Preacher, and current litter. For this issue, Kelly Park shot Scottish Reigns on pages 164-179.

2 SHELLI ALRED With her 14 years of experience, Shelli's industry connections and eye for exceptional style, Shelli Alred of Alred Weddings helps couples create the wedding of their dreams. “This shoot was amazingly fun to style. Picking the venue, 32

7 dresses and model was the easy part...dealing with the weather was hard! Having an outdoor photo shoot with non-stop rain is quite challenging. With the amazing team of vendors and puppies, we not only had a successful shoot, but we had a blast doing it!”

3 RANDY SHAMEL Randy Shamel has been the lead designer at Artistry Florist and Events for the past 33 years. A ground breaker in the floral industry, Randy also has the honor of being the in-house florist for the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis and the Chase Park Plaza, a Royal Sonesta Hotel, where he also operates the retail floral and gift shop. “It was a privilege of designing the

8 floral elements for such a unique bridal shoot. I enjoyed working with the various color palettes, textures and exquisite dresses. And, working with puppies, made it all that much better!”

4 BRADY KEENAN Brady began her company, Brides by Brady, in 2012. She did the hair and makeup for our cover and fashion editorial, Scottish Reigns, beginning on page 164. “I’m blessed to be a part of my brides’ special days. It was a fantastic experience working alongside this talented team.”

5 JULIE FIEDLER As a part of the Alred Wedding team, Julie Fiedler effortlessly manages all of the wedding day

David’s daytime career as editor of Where Magazine and Kansas City Where Guestbook has never kept him from being a longtime contributor to the pages of Saint Louis Bride, for which he has photographed countless bouquets, gifts, jewelry, accessories, food and fashion over the last thirteen years. For this issue, David shot Stuck on You on pages 110 to 111 and Amazing Appetizers on pages 144 to 160.

8 AMY FENSTER BROWN Amy Fenster Brown has had lots of fun writing assignments during her 27 year media career, but her article on wedding night sex, “I Do... But Do We Have To?” on page 191, was one of the more interesting. “Creating a survey on whether people ‘did or didn’t’ took some creativity, because you’re asking a very personal question that some don’t feel comfortable answering. And that is the whole point of the article… to take the stigma away and the pressure off, because your wedding day is actually one of the most exhausting days of your life.”

Laurie and Sarah are both lead wedding photographers and co-owners at Bliss Eleven Studio. They were thrilled to be a part of the From Cute to Couture tabletop shoot and to be able to capture some of the creative genius that is offered by the planners and designers featured. “We have been so lucky to be able to work alongside some seriously talented people in the Saint Louis wedding industry. Walking into a reception and seeing a couple’s vision come to life is so exciting and fun to capture.”

THE FLOWERS: Blue bouquet designed by Randy Shamel, Artistry Florist features Eryngium, stock, astilbe, Queen Anne’s lace, California eucalyptus, silver dollar eucalyptus, tweedia, roses, and dusty miller. HAIR AND MAKEUP: We kept Eileen’s hair soft and romantic. Loose glamorous curls are always in style and beautiful. I used my favorite Diva Lash to open up the eyes and HG foundation. Pretty in Rose Gold This is a simple, yet styled design. A penny-conscious chair and charger option were used and the floral was kept to a minimum, with lots of layered glassware to fill the “cute” table. On the “couture” table, the classic, all-white centerpiece stood out on the rose gold sequin overlay. The gold tableware and foiled paper pieces added nice dimension by adding a second metallic.

ket full of inexpensive necessities for the kitchen or bathroom. At the same time, don’t shy away from high-priced items. You may be surprised by the generosity of a family member. Marye Thomlinson, wedding and gift registry advisor at Macy’s in the St. Louis Galleria, says more expensive items also are popular for group gifts.

Before you start registering for gifts, make an assessment of what you have, what you need, and what you want. There may be items you already have that you want to keep and others that you are ready to replace. Making these decisions prior to registering will help ease the process. Do register for enough gifts. According to registry experts, not registering for enough items is one of the most common mistakes couple make. “It’s very frustrating for guests if there aren’t enough items on the registry. Buying a gift should be easy. Guests want to buy something you want and they should be able to easily find a gift in their price range on your registry,” says Cori. Thomlinson says Macy’s provides couples with guidelines based on the number of guests. “For example, if you have 200 guests, you

need to register for at least 250 items. As the guest list increases so does the number of items. If you have 400 guests you need 550 items on the registry,” she said.

Don’t rush the process. You need to have your registry in place before invitations are sent for your first bridal shower. How much time couples need to complete a registry varies greatly. “Some couples are very decisive and are in and out in no time. Others spend hours making decisions,” says Thomlinson. Plan on making two or three visits to the store to register. During your first visit get an idea of what items or patterns you like. Consider what you need and what you have already and return to the store to begin the registry process. Don’t get trigger happy. Before you start registering for gifts, make an assessment of what you have, what you need, and what you want. There may be items you already have that you want to keep and others that you are ready to replace. Making these decisions prior to registering will help ease the process. “Think about your lifestyle and the way you entertain,” says Thomlinson. “Do you like to barbecue? What type of serving items do you need to host a barbecue? Are you more likely to host a formal dinner? What are you going to need for that?” Thomlinson also tells couples to think beyond today to what you might need in the future. You may not see yourself using china now, but if you are hosting Thanksgiving dinner 10 years from now you won’t want to buy yourself a set of china. It’s also important to make sure your look coordinates as you are adding items to the registry. “One purpose of the wedding registry is that it allows you to set up a household with a cohesive look and style,” says Cori. If you have items you want to incorporate into your household, bring them with you when you register. For example, if you inherited your grandmother’s china bring a piece to the store so you can find accent pieces that complement it and modernize the look.

Don’t register for personal items. Your registry is not the place to ask for the latest X-Box game or the Kate Spade handbag you’ve been eyeing. Many stores, such as Macy’s, won’t allow couples to add personal items such as clothing. Stick to items you and your fiancé will use as part of your home together. I Do... But Do We Have To? An honest conversation about consummating your marriage BY A M Y F E N S T E R B R O W N

I need to have an honest conversation with you about consummating your marriage. That’s fancy talk for “wedding night sex.” I know, we don’t even know each other, and here I go butting my nose in where it’s probably none of my business. But someone has to tell you this.

I Do... But Do We Have To? (Continued from previous page) Most likely, your wedding night sex isn’t going to be the fireworks, earth shaking, romantic movie scene you’ve been hoping for. Chances are you might not have sex at all that night. I’m not saying for certain. But the likelihood is there. And chances are very high you won’t even want to. Don’t turn the page!!! Let me

finish. I contacted a sex expert and everything so rest assured you’re about to learn how this isn’t a bad thing at all. You have a pretty good idea about how the day will go. You’ll spend a while getting ready with hair, makeup, and slipping on that gorgeous dress you chose. You’ll take tons of photos, and you’re going to look absolutely

beautiful. Then you’ll take center stage at the wonderful ceremony, followed by a fantastic reception. Since you’re the star you’ll be busy greeting everyone, dancing, and tossing back a few drinks. You’ll probably only get a few bites of that delicious dinner you planned to detail. I’m exhausted already, aren’t you? Well guess what – it’s now time for you and your new spouse to head to the wedding suite for the night. Yeah, THE night. Times have changed, with many couples living together before they get married. So the idea of the wedding night being the first time you’ve slept together seems old-fashioned. It will ring true for some of you, however. Whatever your decision, the advice still pertains to you.

“Many couples set unattainable expectations about how wedding night romance should go,” says Sex Therapist Heather Raznick. “The idea that everything will run smoothly without a discussion seems silly given how much pre planning we all know goes into any special event. The details of planning a wedding focus on the dress, venue, gift registry, food and flowers ….why not sex?” Of the people I interviewed for this article, more than 75% did not have sex on their wedding night, mainly because of exhaustion.

Most likely, your wedding night sex isn’t going to be the fireworks, earth shaking, romantic movie scene you’re been hoping for. Chances are you might not have sex at all that night.

I Do... But Do We Have To? Raznick says that makes perfect sense. “Rarely is this a time when we are well rested, sober and ready for pleasure. We are tired, our feet hurt and haven’t slept well for weeks in preparation. This night is actually more stressful and most couples are hungry and exhausted.” For most couples I interviewed, the decision was mutual to not have sex that night. “We were tired and overwhelmed. We ordered a pizza,” says one. Feeling tired was a big theme here. Most couples said they were absolutely fine getting rest instead of getting frisky. “By the time I got all the bobby pins out of my hair, and my husband counted the checks we received, we showered, ordered room service, and just passed out.” So let’s go back to that 25% who did consummate the marriage. One woman reports it was “better than average” while another says “It must have been average because I honestly have no memory of it.” Yet another says “We were so wiped out, we had a quickie, but we made up for it on the honeymoon.” Of those who did consummate the marriage on the wedding night, all but one person said they did it because they felt they “were supposed to.” One says “I actually felt lots of pressure, which I put on myself. I was very tired after a very long day, but felt like ‘how could we not?’” This clearly takes the romance and desire out of the equation, which could leave the couple disappointed. Totally normal, according to Raznick. “Brides might feel pressure, as in, they are ‘supposed’ to have sex. Couples should talk about lowering or eliminating any pressure they put on themselves.” One person surveyed says “I think if you feel like doing it you should. But I think the societal pressure shouldn't take over the whole situation. You probably have to get up early the next morning to go do more festivities. Everyone is tired. It's ok to just not do it.” “Sex is over-rated on the wedding night,” says another. “It will be much better when you are not exhausted or feel pressured. My suggestion is ‘morning after’ sex, of course after you’ve brushed your teeth!” Going through the motions because of pre-existing expectations, especially if you’re exhausted and emotionally drained, most likely isn’t going to lead to a wonderful experience, according to Raznick. “This is not the night to expect an idealized ‘romantic movie version’ of wedding night sex. If you want the rockets and firecrackers each individual needs to show up prepared,” says Raznick. “Being prepared means understanding

the unique qualities of what feels good for self, having the education and information about anatomy and PATIENCE. This allows a couple to focus on sensations that feel good and limits anxiety surrounding performance.” One person surveyed looks at the whole thing with a lighthearted approach. “I hated feeling like I HAD to do it. It was late. I had some alco-

hol. I really felt pressure. I still feel like there's too much pressure to have sex all the time when we all are tired. The bed is for sleeping as well as messing around. Ok apparently I'm just tired. All. The. Time.” And please let me close with a fun fact. Everyone I surveyed is still married, whether they had wedding night sex or not! ♥

Dear Me, Reflections of a newlywed on her birthday

S

O THIS IS 35.

Morning belly rubs with a spoiled fur baby and a sleepy eyed kiss from my husband (whhhaaaattttt? Still getting used to that). It feels calm and relaxed and just right, kinda like the first bite of cream of wheat when it gets cold. You know my dad sings this song in a deep baritone voice about cream of wheat every winter and it’s one of my favorite feel good memories. Ten years ago I had all these goals, ideas of how life should be each year, what should be accomplished, what should be in the bank, what I should look like, when I should be married, where I should live, what my house should look like, how many kids I should have. Oh, and that I would have an amazing yard, every year I think I’m going to grow beautiful things. And guess what, life does not work like that. You don’t reach a certain age and all of a sudden it all just happens easily. Life flies by.

Opportunities show up and you take them, leading you down another path your 25-year-old self didn’t plan on. And, ten years later, I still buy plants when spring hits with this idea that they will flourish and I will have a green thumb—even bribing them with miracle grow and a fancy new hose. This year is no different. Friends become distant with careers and growing families and new friends show up. I love them all dearly no matter how far the distance or how long since the last chat. Material things become less important and seeing the world becomes a priority. Staying home in jammies is much more appealing than a night on the town. And, my will power to avoid sugar and carbs gets weaker every day. I’m not sure if it’s really weaker or if my body and mind are just tired of yo-yo dieting to become something I’m clearly not

built for. And because cake and pizza is really flippin’ good! And it’s a damn good day when you can put on a pair of old unflattering jeans and they fit! (That’s usually when I have to treat myself to the aforementioned cake and pizza ... in that order, please, followed by more cake... with all the icing). I used to see the world as a wonderland and strangers as friends, that we all have good intentions and over the years I’ve learned the hard way that it’s not as sparkly and happy as I once hoped for. People aren’t always who they say they are and that’s because they are still figuring it out and might be struggling to find their path. Which in all honesty is not totally a bad thing, just means I hold my goodies a lot closer to my heart, that I protect them even fiercer than before. It doesn’t mean I don’t love any less, but I do know that there is something (even the tiniest bit of) good that comes out of every crazy.

Friends become distant with careers and growing families and new friends show up. I love them all dearly no matter how far the distance or how long since the last chat. I trust things work out as they should in most circumstances but admittedly having faith is something I struggle with everyday. When I’m not trying to control everything or run through “what if” scenarios or worry about how to protect everyone around me, some really great things happen. When I allow the right clients to show up, they do. They are my gifts. And, nearly every single one holds a special place in my heart, you all know who you are and your first dance song still makes me tear up. Gosh, I am so grateful for that because it still brings me so much joy! When I don’t bend over backwards and force the sale, or short change myself because I worry about not having enough or being enough, choosing from fear, that’s when wacky shows up. So, I’m constantly working on that. Not every match is a match made in heaven just like every potential client is not my client. And, that is ok. Life is now about being present. Adulting, but not every day, that would be too serious.

Getting married. Omg, I’m married. Never thought that was happening. Ever. But like I said before, something good (in this case something perfect and amazing and thoughtful and kind and hilarious and handsome) shows up in the midst of crazy and all of a sudden your life makes sense. So this is 35. Still wearing my 13-year-old race shirt (no really the year is on there so I’m

LOVE

not exaggerating), babies (human or animals) still light up my life, still love wrapping presents and not good at receiving them, still love LOVE and still figuring out my path and what lies ahead, but I know and trust this, it’s going as it should and I am surrounded by love and people that I love, and that’s all that really matters. Happy birthday to me! Cheers! And here’s to another cup of coffee (or wine)! ♥

ceremony, dinner, lots of dancing and perhaps an increased intake of alcoholic beverages means it’s time for a late-night snack. The possibilities for deliciousness are endless, and your guests will flock to the food like single ladies to your bouquet. Offering some after dinner goodies is so popular that Windows on Washington includes it in their top package. “And even couples that choose a different package often add a late night buffet to their reception,” said Cece Reicher of Windows on Washington. They have provided a slider bar, nacho bar, sundae bar and toasted ravioli for revelers later in the evening. Windows on Washington does allow outside food to be brought in for late night noshing, and will order and set it up for you. Keep in mind that there is a service charge, so it’s smart to check with your caterer for what they offer first, and what they may or may not allow to be brought in.

“Late night eats are an element of the wedding where the couple can really get creative,” said Allissa Reimer, owner and principal planner and designer at Style: Altar’d. “It’s something couples can customize as much as they want and have a lot of fun with.” Reimer said that a late night bite can serve a dual-purpose—a tummy filler and a wedding favor. “If you choose something that the guests can take with them, it’s very likely they will take it, as opposed to other, more costly favors that may be left behind,” said Reimer. One great example of a food/favor is popcorn. Poptions! Popcorn offers personalized, reclosable bags, so guests can enjoy popcorn on site, and take some to go. Poptions! offers 25 to 30 flavors every day, with savory and sweet varieties always available. Owner Marilyn Freundlich said, “Couples can be as fancy or as basic as they

Her family has a long history of visiting Crown Candy, so it was also a personal nod to special memories at the St. Louis institution. Other ideas include mini hot dogs, chicken fingers (Reicher says that lately Chick-Fil-A has

been a request at Windows on Washington), chips, salsa and guacamole, and perhaps for outdoor or summer weddings, snowcones. You can combine two trends, and serve late night eats from a food truck. Amelia Timms is chef and owner of Graze Food Truck, which features fresh and local ingredients. Timms can cater a wedding from beginning to end,

If you’d like to represent our fair city at your reception, there’s popcorn in flavors of gooey butter cake and even toasted ravioli (and including the aforementioned caramel popcorn with St. Louis confectioner Karl Bissinger’s chocolate would be a must). Your venue sets up the popcorn bar, and the popcorn looks classy in different types in glass bowls, with scoops and fun signage. “I suggest couples come in for a complimentary tasting, and choose four or five flavors,” Freundlich said. Late Night Eats but has also arrived for the latter part of the evening. She loves listening to a couple’s ideas and running with it. “I love creating artistic food with a punch of color,” Timms said. “The more outlandish it is, the more fun I have.” Timms has served after dinner dishes such as street tacos and donut holes and coffee, mini chicken and waffles, her special recipe white

barbecue chicken and her most popular item, bacon-wrapped potato bites with homemade creole sauce, served in boats with a bamboo skewer. She recently worked with a couple who were world travelers and loved Thai food. Timms created a chili-lime chicken on a skewer that was a big hit and represented the couples’ worldly ways. She also offers vegan and vegetar-

ian options, such as grilled veggie sliders and Caprese bruschetta. Tiffany Butler, of Style Couture Events by Tiffany, has arranged for pizza food trucks to arrive at the reception, and also offered warm cookies with shots of milk, as well as the crowd-pleasing St. Louis staples. Caterers that don’t allow outside food have provided mini

cheeseburgers and little milkshakes. “In general, I would suggest something savory to go with the cocktails,” Butler said. “Something that is kind of substantial and maybe a little greasy.” Butler also encourages couples to provide bottles of water for guests on their way out, which can be fancied up with personalized labels. Allissa Reimer seconds Butler’s savory suggestion: “Shoot for carbs!” Reimer said. “As the drinks flow, that seems to be what guests usually want. We brought in 24 cases of White Castle burgers to a reception once and you wouldn’t believe how quickly they were devoured.” When considering what to serve, think about foods that are utensil-free and guests may want to roam around the room with. “Often by this time in the evening, guests don’t really want to sit down again,” Butler said. Certain foods can be served out of photo-worthy containers, like paper cones, movie theater-style popcorn boxes or small Chinese food boxes. Reimer says it’s also nice to choose things that require minimal set-up. Whatever you choose, it will no doubt be appreciated by your guests-a scrumptious ending to a wonderful day. ♥ 198

Not sPeNdiNG eNoUGH oN cAPtUriNG tHe dAY Finally! Here’s one where you can spend MORE money! Make sure you allot enough of your budget to a skilled photographer. This is one area where it’s especially unadvisable to give your Mom’s friend’s son his first chance to experiment with his fancy new camera. You’ve spent too much time, effort and money on this day, and you want beautiful pictures capturing it all. Unfortunately, Lisa Frederich can speak from experience on this one. “I hired a friend of a friend as our photographer, and I didn’t see any of his previous work. Most of the pictures were blurry or too dark. I was devastated.” While this is an extreme example, it’s another cautionary tale about the importance of experience. Butler strongly believes all couples should leave room in their budget for a videographer. “As all brides know, your wedding day goes by so quickly. Having the voices of you and your husband and your wedding guests on video, and seeing everyone in action having a great time is priceless.” In general, Reimer reminds couples that the wedding is a celebration of their love and should be a reflection of them, as a unit. Whatever is important to you is how you should determine how your money is spent. “Do your thing,” Reimer said, to bring your vision to fruition, no matter what your budget. ♥

Though procuring a wedding license isn’t quite as complicated as the wedding itself, it helps to know the rules. Here they are: 1 All applicants in Missouri and Illinois must receive a license before the ceremony; Saint Louis Bride recommends a minimum of 24 hours. Blood tests are not required in either state. 2 A Missouri license is valid for thirty days from its effective date; an Illinois license for sixty days. 3 Both bride and groom must apply in person. In Missouri, you may apply for a license at any office provided the wedding is to take place within the state. In Illinois, you must apply for and receive a license from the county in which the ceremony will take place.
