The "F" Word I know you are probably thinking to yourself, “what in the world is this lady referring to?” but rest assured, it is not what you think. It is, however, something very important. FAMILY. While some immediately think of parents, siblings and blood relatives, family for many also includes close friends, co-workers and colleagues. And, this “family,” Include them. Photograph them. Get those family portraits taken. Ask your photographer to snap some candids. Why? Because, as you see here, these are the memories captured that you will have to treasure after the honeymoon. Because, many of these photographs often become part of not only your legacy, but theirs as well. I feel so very strongly about this subject. Family. Photographs. Memories. Legacy.

Abbie Rudolph is the owner and lead photographer of Abbie Takes Pictures. She’s been photographing weddings full-time since 2009. She feels incredibly fortunate to be able to do what she loves for a living and continues to be inspired by her clientele. This is her third cover and fashion editorial for Saint Louis Bride magazine.
Jody Cox and the award-winning team at An Affair To Remember have been designing and decorating weddings since 2009. With a focus on beautiful florals and unique rentals, this shoot was no exception. “We loved how creative we got to be with this project. Chef Marianne Moore’s path into the kitchen wasn't exactly straight. While on a sabbatical from her interior-design career, Moore was recruited to attend a “just for fun” culinary class with a friend, only to walk out with a new calling. Now, with a resume that includes stints at some of the city’s most upscale hotels, Moore is putting her mark on the St. Louis culinary scene as the creative director for the Dierbergs culinary program. There, she oversees the market’s six in-store cooking schools by designing menus, creating recipes and inspiring others to take the leap into the kitchen like she did.

on the cover
The entire inspiration for the fashion editorial came from little fairy gardens that were “magically” popping up in people’s yards in and around St. Louis. My vision was ethereal, naturally-lit imagery with a high-fashion, unique edge. —ABBIE RUDOLPH, ABBIE TAKES PICTURES
THE DRESS: Page by Kite and Butterfly is a flowy, tiered dress featuring chiffon panels and delicate cotton lace embroidery, $1,450 from The Bridal Parlour. THE HAIR: To start with this look, Meggan pre-set Skylar’s hair with Kevin Murphy Anti.Gravity spray and applied Powder.Puff. This gave our stylist, Meggan, a great foundation to work with. After brushing out the set, Meggan used an iron to wrap the hair around, and lightly combed through with a wide-tooth comb. Finally, a quick spray of Kevin Murphy Bedroom.Hair to complete our cover girl’s look.
MODEL:
34
THE MAKEUP: Jordan kept model Skylar’s skin soft and dewy to compliment the airy feel of her dress by airbrushing her with Temptu Pro’s S/B foundation. To give her a little more radiance, she dusted the high points of her face with BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal. THE LOCATION: The gorgeous rock garden at Kuhs Estate & Farm in Spanish Lake, Missouri.

Even a hurricane couldn’t wipe out this determined couple’s wedding plans P H OTO G R A P H Y B Y YO U R S TO R Y P H OTO + C I N E M A A N D C ATA L I N A Brittany Arndt had been planning a destination wedding in Lake Worth, Florida for over a year, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Just two weeks before their big day, Brittany realized she’d have to move the wedding to St. Louis because of Hurricane Irma. “I was determined to keep our original date of September 15,” said Brittany. “Getting married was more important than where the wedding was.” With the help of Ann Jones at Moulin Events and Meetings, along with friends and family, the couple planned and executed a beautiful wedding in less than a week. Most of the guests were able to attend, including Brittany’s dad, who flew in from Florida as soon as the airports reopened. How did Brittany and Charles toast their nuptials? With hurricane cocktails, of course.

ou may already be asking — “What is a styled shoot?” The short answer? When wedding pros collaborate and produce their own mock wedding. Some may include everything comprised in a genuine wedding including the
venue, florals, rentals, stationery, linens and even bride and groom models. This allows for very specific images to be captured. How is this beneficial to a planning bride and groom? Styled shoots are not only visually appealing and inspirational, but they also allow you to see what amazing work a particular team or wedding professionals can create for you.

Most of the crowd was still dancing at midnight, as Hayley was saying goodbye to a few guests. A casually-dressed group approached Hayley and congratulated her on her marriage. “I heard someone say Katy Perry was in the hotel and realized that it was her talking to me!” Hayley recounted. “She said she and her dancers had come from the Janet Jackson concert and asked if they could crash our wedding. Of course, I said yes. They formed a dance circle and were a lot of fun. Everything went flawlessly and it had been a perfect day. But Katy Perry coming was the cherry on top.”

JORD Watches Wooden watches are a unique gift idea
BY A M Y Z I M M E R M A N | P H OTO G R A P H Y B Y D AV I D L A N C A S T E R JORD offers various styles of watches for both men and women crafted from woods such as acacia, bamboo, ebony, and zebrawood. No two watches are identical as each piece of wood has its own unique grain, tone, or shade. “We source woods from the United States, Europe, South America, Africa and Asia. Woods react differently to manufacturing and we have a process we use depending on the hardness and density of the wood we are using. We try to work with woods that are more stable,” Shah explains. The watches are available online and through several jewelry stores and boutiques. Shah says his customers range from young people in their 20s looking for the next hip thing to business people in their 40s who like the idea of a unique timepiece. “One thing we’ve found with our customers is there are a lot of people who collect watches collector’s and see this as a collector piece. Over time the natural oils continue to soak into the wood and create a patina giving it a different character,” says Shah. Others are attracted to the idea of wearing a piece of art as a timepiece. “It’s a fashion statement to some degree.

“Obviously Kayla had most of the say in the details, but this was my
idea and I was excited about it,” says Jordan Bauer. The custom ties he wanted are created by St. Louis resident Jenny Hill, who, through her Lonesome Traveler brand, sews handmade, unisex neckwear and accessories. “I found Jenny on Instagram actually a few years ago as a local tie maker and thought her stuff was super cool. I kept seeing her stuff in boutiques around St. Louis and was impressed by her work,” says Bauer. Bauer contacted Hill and began collaborating with her on the design for a necktie and pocket square for himself and bowties for his groomsmen. Typically the process begins with selecting the fabric. Hill offers some fabrics through her website but often couples prefer to choose a custom fabric. Hill usually meets with the couple in her studio or at a fabric store. 188

brides who choose them,” says Hill. Hill has developed relationships with several stores in the area and selects the one that best fits the needs of the couple. “I get there early so I can have a couple of options ready for them based on their color theme and if they want a design such as a pattern, stripe, or floral. Fabric choices run the full range, from traditional to funky,” says Hill. Hill prefers to work with natural materials, such as cotton, linen, or silk. Occasionally couples will have an item that holds sentimental value that they want to have made into a tie for the wedding. Others ask about ordering fabric online. “We shop together online and I order samples to make sure the fabric will work as a tie and to confirm that it is high enough quality fabric,” she

Most grooms choose to outfit the entire wedding party with custom items. “I try to make the groom stand out. Maybe he has the print tie and the others wear solid, or the groom has the pocket square and the others don’t. There are lots of options for mixing and matching,” says Hill. Hill offers various packages for groomsmen, ushers, ring bearers, and fathers. Hill says most of the time her initial contact with a client comes from the bride or the mother of the bride or groom. “Often the brides tell me they don’t know if the groom will be eager to participate but I find that when the couple comes to the initial meeting the groom gets excited and usually has strong opinions,” says Hill. Hill’s creations also are popular for LGBTQ weddings. Hill is able to create custom sizes that are more flattering for females. And, like their male counterparts, it allows women who choose not to wear a gown a more hands-on, creative way to dress for their wedding. “I hear over and over again that this is the one thing the groom gets to choose. It’s like the groom’s version of shopping for the wedding dress,” says Hill. “There was a lot of collaboration between us,” says Bauer. “I told her about the vibe and

Enjoy the Moment How to truly appreciate your wedding and focus on the day, not the details
If you ask any recent brides for advice for soon-to-be brides, chances are they will all say the same thing. After all the preparation, debating and deciding, when the big day finally arrives— just enjoy it. Don’t sweat the small stuff. The day goes by so quickly! Have fun and appreciate it, even if little things go wrong. That can be easier said than done. How exactly do you stay calm, cool and collected when you desperately want everything you’ve worked for to come together as you’ve envisioned? You can’t control everything that happens on your wedding day, but you can control how you react 192

to it and your own state of well-being. And, some of the ways to do that may surprise you. BEFORE THE WEDDING Do not try to do away with anxiousness or stress. “In the days leading up to the wedding, remember to embrace the anxious feelings,” says Nikki Rauner, MSW, LCSW, a psychologist with Emotional Health Therapy. “Anxiety is a neutral emotion. When we can see it as a neutral emotion, we realize it is not bad or good, it’s just an emotion. Emotions around an exciting, transitional, stressful, fun event, are completely typical.” Rauner says if you welcome the anxi-

suggests. “Your thoughts actually drive your emotions. If you can figure out your thoughts, you can create an action to-do list around the anxious thoughts. You will find that when you identify your thoughts, you are able to shift them. When you shift your thoughts, you naturally shift your emotions.” You might worry, for
example, that your uncle will drink too much at the reception. That’s the initial thought. Answer that thought with yes, he might drink too much and that will not be a reflection on me. I’m not my uncle. Or even, I’ll directly ask my uncle to limit his alcohol intake. However you are able to shift the thought, you can change your anx-

ety, you are allowing that emotion to come in, making room for other emotions like excitement, happiness and joy. Often times, we label unpleasant emotions such as sadness and anxiousness as bad. When we do this, we are judging our emotions, and more unpleasant emotions surface. Try to acknowledge the emotion, give yourself some time to feel that unpleasant emotion, and wait and see what happens. This is also the idea behind mindfulness, a popular buzzword lately. Mindfulness is basically a state of being open and actively noticing the present, without judging emotions and thoughts. This can serve everyone throughout their day, but especially you on your wedding day. After you have acknowledged the emotions, write down your thoughts, Rauner

In addition to helping you look great in your dress, practicing yoga can help decrease stress and anxiety, promote positive thinking, raise self-awareness, improve productivity and creativity and lead to
greater self-confidence, says Kate Sanders, a yoga instructor with Charge Yoga. Taking a regular class throughout the wedding planning process is an ideal way to center, calm and reenergize yourself. Ever wonder how Jennifer Aniston looks so great at 48? She’s a yoga devotee. “Yoga also improves strength
and flexibility, muscle tone, balance, and posture,” Sanders said. “And it’s great for your cardiovascular and circulatory health.” A yoga class the day before the wedding for you and your bridesmaids, and maybe your mother and future mother-in-law, could be a fun bonding experience that benefits everyone, even first-timers. Some instructors will come to a private home, your hotel or your favorite park and can cater to all levels of experience. Your bridal party will likely find a private yoga class relaxing and low-key…you may even inspire those new to yoga to continue on with their sun salutations and downward dogs. “I went to a destination wedding and all the guests were invited to a yoga class on the beach the morning of the ceremony,” recalls

Your bridal party will likely find a private yoga class relaxing and low-key... you may even inspire those new to yoga to contiue on with their sun salutations and downward dogs.
Enjoy the Moment Abby Gresham. “It was a great way to get to know the other guests a little bit more, and it was both calming and energizing. It really set the tone for the day.” WEDDING DAY Just as psychologist Nikki Rauner advises you to recognize being anxious before the wedding, it’s the same for the day of (and beyond). “In order to stay calm the day of the wedding, don’t think about staying calm. Lean into your thoughts and emotions. If you worry about staying calm on the day, you will likely hyper-focus on staying calm, which creates unsettling anxious feelings,” Rauner says. She says instead to say to yourself: “I’m going to enjoy all the moments I can on the day of my wedding, and I will probably be anxious and stressed at other points.” That way, you are setting a realistic expectation of yourself. “When you allow yourself stressful moments, you will more likely be able to move out of those quicker, if you already allowed yourself to have those moments. When
we put an expectation on ourselves about how we are allowed to feel, we often find that we escalate those feelings of anxiety because what began as a moment of stress, is now compounded with new stressful thoughts about how we need to calm down,” says Rauner. Rauner likens it to the idea that if we see someone walking on the street and do not want to say hi, it is best to nod and say hello, rather than follow them around and tell them we will not talk to them. The same is true for stress and anxiety, nod and say hello, so you can move on. Do not follow the thought around and say I won’t be anxious, or you’re staying with the anxiety. Another, more pragmatic thing to help prepare for the big day is to count on a couple of besties. “Have your one or two people that you know calm you or always seem to say the right thing when you are stressed,” suggests Rauner. “Have a plan prior to the day so they know the support you’ll need. You might have a ‘code word’ that means this person will know
you need to take a walk or have a quick private moment. Then they can simply implement your escape plan.” Sneaking away for a brief private moment at the reception is doable, but breaking into the warrior or half-moon pose in your gown may raise some eyebrows. Practicing yoga in the months leading up to the wedding will already help ground you, but fitting in a few yoga moves the morning of your wedding is worth the brief time it takes. Sanders suggests these five poses that anyone can do: child’s pose, eagle pose, corpse pose, legs-up-the-wall pose and the puppy pose. Of course, another great thing about yoga is that you can find video demonstrations of these poses on your phone and do them anywhere. Your wedding day will most likely go by quickly, whether everything goes according to plan or there are little hiccups along the way. That’s all the more reason to feel OK with however you are feeling, notice the ups and the downs, and savor every bit of it. ♥

any brides turn to websites and magazines for inspiration on the look and feel they want for their wedding day. But often the trends seen on PInterest boards are repeated so frequently they become dated and tired while others are far more difficult to execute than couples expect. There are ways to make your wedding day feel both timely and timeless while incorporating your personal style and avoiding trends that cause havoc for brides and planners.

THE RUSTIC THEME There is nothing wrong with a natural theme to your wedding but brides may need to take a step back and recognize when enough is enough. Sometimes brides get carried away with the theme and suddenly they have burlap-tied napkins, mason jar centerpieces, twine-tied bouquets, and a floral crown. “Trends go in ebbs and flows and currently the trend toward the overly rustic look seems to have run its course,” says Simcah

Lourie, owner of Simcha’s Events. Julie Redmond, owner of Vellum Paperie, says she has fewer brides opting for more informal, kraft paper invitations that were part of the rustic wedding trend. Wedding planners suggest that brides who prefer a more natural theme can accomplish that look while still maintaining a more timeless feel. Focus more on your own style preferences and keep your own identity front and center. Working in a few trendy details is fine, but avoid incorporating a single theme in every aspect of your wedding. “You can do a farm wedding without using every cliché item from the mason jars to the chalkboard signs. Focus more on family and use items that are meaningful to you,” says Josie Littlepage, owner of Cosmopolitan Events.
“On that day and in those images that are supposed to last a lifetime the focus should be on the bride. She is the superstar and the bridesmaids are the backup singers,” says Debbie Rudawsky, owner of Town & Country Bridal Boutique. Consider the effect these types of gowns
may have on your photos. Often the eye is drawn to what is different. You may notice that one neckline is more flattering than another or that one color washes out a bridesmaid’s face while another stands out in a bright gown. It takes attention away from the person who should be the center—the bride.
The choreographed first dance can be found all over social media but a search for both “best” and “worst” will get a lot of hits. So how do you know if the choreographed first dance is a good idea for your wedding? MIX AND MATCH OR OMBRE BRIDESMAID DRESSES The trend for bridesmaids to wear mix and match gowns or wear an ombre color palate for gowns may be eye-catching but perhaps not in the way brides intended. Before choosing to use either of these looks in your wedding, be sure to consider the drawbacks. With mix and match, brides may choose a color but allow her bridesmaids to select dresses that are different cuts or feature various necklines. With an ombre color palate, brides try to organize maids from tallest to shortest and assign each a color from, for example, blush to champagne to cranberry. Take a look at a wedding photo using this trend and what do you notice–the bride or her maids? SPRING/SUMMER 2018 • WWW.BRIDESTL.COM

Trends to Avoid Not to mention the added stress for an already overwhelmed bride deciding which bridesmaid gets to wear which neckline and which maid gets which color dress. “Both trends are very challenging to coordinate and execute properly,” says Rudawsky.
While the look may be dramatic in the online images, in reality it may not be worth the effort and may even have a negative effect. Simple, classic gowns of the same design and color allow the bride to shine on her day and in those pictures.
PHOTO BOOTHS They aren’t on the way out, but the way photo booths are used in the reception is changing. “We find that the props are becoming more customized to the couple,” says Littlepage. Gone are the clown wigs and oversized glasses. Instead couples are creating personalized signs and props on sites such as Etsy or choosing items that reflect their hobbies or interests. Also, couples are choosing simple, custom backgrounds in place of the tinsely, glittery backgrounds. SPARKLER PHOTOS You’ve seen the images online of the wedding party with sparklers or the dramatic exit of the bride and groom amidst the glow of sparklers, but most wedding photographers caution couples against this trend. “There are so many awful things that can happen with a hot flame in a group of people, especially if they’ve been drinking alcohol. You

You do not want to end up in the emergency room with a member of your wedding party.” –Liz Sloan, L Photographie do not want to end up in the emergency room with a member of your wedding party,” says Liz Sloan with L Photographie. Singed hair, scorched tuxedos and gowns, and burned skin are just a few of the catastrophes that have occurred because of sparklers. Guests and the wedding party are busy watching the couple or looking at the camera and not paying enough attention to where they are waving a burning flame. Even if no one gets hurt, the sparkler exit rarely comes off as planned. “Getting a large group of people to follow 198

Trends to Avoid instructions and light the sparklers at the same time and have the couple time their exit so they make it out the door after all the sparklers are lit but before any burn out is a bit dicey to say the least,” says Sloan. The images may be dramatic, but will they bring back a fond memory of your wedding day or a terrible flashback? There are plenty of options for amazing, memorable wedding pictures that don’t involve fire. Couples should talk with their photographer about the type of images they want to capture and consider leaving the sparklers for the Fourth of July. “Sparklers are pretty and if a couple has their heart set on capturing that photo, we recommend doing it early in the evening, in a controlled environment, and with just a few members of the wedding party,” says Sloan.
you and your friends are talented dancers and have the time to practice, stick with the traditional first dance. “Laugh together, cry together, throw in a little twirl, and have fun. You’ll be much happier with the candid images your photographer will be able to capture,” says Sloan.
BLUSH For at least the last five years, blush has been one of the most popular wedding color palettes. “We’ve seen an abundance of blush that may have started with Jessica Simpson’s wedding but seems to be moving out now,” says Littlepage. Brides who are drawn to the blush look are
POCKET INVITATIONS Pocket invitations, where all the pieces fit inside a folder, are becoming less popular with the increased use of technology. “Brides loved pockets for holding all the different pieces together, but now the theme seems to be less is more,” says Redmond. “All the extra information doesn’t need to be included in the invitation because couples use their websites to deliver the necessary details to their guests.” THE CHOREOGRAPHED FIRST DANCE The slow song starts and the bride and groom sway on the dance floor when suddenly the music changes and the couple breaks into a dance routine, often joined by members of the wedding party. The choreographed first dance can be found all over social media but a search for “best” and “worst” both will get a lot of hits. So how do you know if the choreographed first dance is a good idea for your wedding? “Unless you are actually trained dancers or dance together regularly and it’s natural for you, skip it,” says Sloan. Photographers love to capture the emotions of a wedding day and a choreographed dance usually means you are counting steps and deep in concentration, trying to stay with the beat and not step on anyone’s feet. A choreographed dance takes hours of rehearsal to perfect to the point where all participants are comfortable with their ability to perform a seamless routine. The images of nervous faces focused on remembering the next step will be much different than those captured during a lovely, romantic first dance between bride and groom. Trends to Avoid choosing dusty-rose while others are starting to bring color back to the mix. “The blush color scheme was a big trend and it is definitely still around but seems to be on the tail-end of popularity. For a while almost every other bride we saw had a blush and burgundy color scheme,” says Sara Ward, owner of Wildflowers.
CASUAL WEDDING DRESSES Phasing out this wedding season along with the rustic theme are boho-chic wedding dresses. These casual gowns gained some popularity among brides with destination weddings, but Rudawsky points out that brides who prefer a more dramatic, glamorous feel find that they
don’t need to be so literal with matching their dress to their wedding location. “There are many wedding gowns that can be beautiful on the beach, in the mountains, or at a winery and have an impact that a bride deserves,” she says. “This is a bride’s day to shine. She needs to consider the effect the gown has on the lasting impression of the wedding, not only in the minds of her guests but in the photos from that day.” CASUAL SHOES Cowboy boots. High tops. Brides are kicking off the casual footwear and opting for elegant shoes that complement their gowns. “Brides are realizing that you can see those shoes, even though you think they are covered by the gown. You can even tell in the way a

Why spend so much time and money on a bridal gown and not have a fancy pair of shoes to match? Even brides who prefer a more comfortable shoe for the reception select something elegant rather than a pair of Birkenstocks or Converse. ELABORATE CAKES Wedding cakes with patterns, flowers, and designs made of fondant are becoming less popular “Brides are choosing more simple, pretty cakes with buttercream icing that tastes yummy,” says Littlepage. Instead of ornate designs, brides are focused on the flavor and decorating the cake with fresh flowers or a simple design. ♥ 200

“I am so glad I hired a wedding planner.” Having written about countless weddings and talked to hundreds of brides, this is the answer I most hear regarding newlyweds’ advice to future brides. They say hiring a wedding planner was key to realizing the wedding of their dreams, and with a lot less stress than if they had gone at it alone. Wedding planners make the planning and execution of your big day tremendously easier and better. Advice from Wedding Planners they want to achieve. Here are some things to keep in mind, straight from the experts: YOUR VERY FIRST STOP: THE WEDDING PLANNER Hiring the right wedding planner for you is a big deal, so ask away, says Ellen Gutierrez of Bride’s

Don’t be embarrassed to express a concern, even if it might sound a little out there.” And please don’t commit to any venues or vendors before hiring a planner. “You wouldn’t build a house and then hire an architect,” points

out Lacy Branch, owner and chief event stylist of Lacy Branch Events. “We know of more venues than you are probably aware of, and we know the pros and cons of each.” Also, you may be committing to a venue that doesn’t align with your budget. “It makes it really hard for the planner if you have a budget of $40,000 and you’ve already signed on with a reception venue that costs $30,000,” says Gutierrez. Once you have hired your planner, trust in her and relinquish your control early on. “Your planner is assembling a team of experienced professionals and you can’t second guess them every step of the way,” says Branch.
Once you have hired your planner, trust in her and relinquish your control early on. “Your planner is assembling a team of experienced professionals and you can’t second guess them every step of the way,” says Branch. THE BUDGET: SOME HARD TRUTHS It’s essential to be upfront and honest with your planner right away about what your budget truly is, says Gutierrez. And Branch says there’s no secret to where your money goes: “The guest list is what drives your budget. Some brides may need a reality check—do they want quality or quantity? Often the guest list needs to be cut, or the budget increased. And don’t settle on a venue without knowing your guest count. You may want to add 100 guests, but your venue is not big enough to hold them. Or, you can’t afford a certain venue with the 400 guests you are planning on.” Another rule of the budget: Some things are non-negotiable. Josie Littlepage, owner of Cosmopolitan Events, says, “The cost of a chair is the cost of a chair. Flowers are not negotiable either, but you can choose different flowers to fit your budget.” Littlepage also advises brides not to be surprised by delivery charges. “We’ll tell you about them ahead of time, but sometimes
Advice from Wedding Planners the charges may vary based on the day and time of delivery and additional factors.” Kristin Weis of Kristin Ashley Events agrees that couples need to know that sometimes the price is the price. “It may be off-season, but that doesn’t always mean you’ll get a discount,” says Weis. “After all, most of your popular wedding floral is not in season in January.” Be careful about spending too much in one area if you are trying to stick to an overall budget. Gutierrez gives an example: “You may not need favors and menu cards and place cards—that’s all being spent in one place—on the table. You could do one framed menu on the table, so instead of spend $20 per table on menu cards, you are renting one frame for two dollars.” MORE OPINIONS IS NOT NECESSARILY BETTER-AND IS DEFINITELY PRICIER Ellen Gutierrez says some brides want to bring their future in-laws to the dinner tasting. Usually tastings are for four people and adding any more is an additional cost to you. Besides costing you more, you may get more feedback than you bargained for. “You’ll be bringing two more opinions to the table, and you may not like what they have to say,” Gutierrez says. “Then you’re between a rock and a hard place.” Also, think seriously before you ask someone to be a bridesmaid. “A small wedding party is cheaper—bouquets, gifts and transportation costs add up,” Lacy Branch says. “And every bridesmaid will likely let you know how she feels about the dress, shoes, hair and makeup.” It often leads to more stress for brides. Branch thinks three bridesmaids and groomsmen is ideal. Regarding soliciting opinions, Josie Littlepage says brides really need to trust their own tastes and instincts more. “It’s about what you are attracted to. Details are subjective-there isn’t a right and a wrong choice or a better choice, just what you genuinely like,” Littlepage says. “Some brides worry too much that something might be tacky, outdated or cliché. But with a good wedding planner and reputable vendors, all the options presented to you will be tasteful and of high quality. Choose what you like best. Your planner and the vendors all are on your team and want the best for you. They want you to be pleased and to possibly recommend them to future clients. They would not lead you astray.” THE PITFALLS OF BEING TOO PARTICULAR On the other hand, some brides may be so sure of exactly what they want that they won’t entertain
the idea of anything else. For instance, don’t obsess over the perfect color. “The perfect color doesn’t exist and won’t be found for all the things you may want it for,” Littlepage says. “Know that there will be a range of similar colors and that will look just as nice. Find a color palette you love, and go with that. Lighting, indoors and out,
can change ‘the perfect color’ anyway.” And as the song goes, you can’t always get what you want. But the wedding planner can usually get pretty darn close. “Just because you’ve seen it on Pinterest doesn’t mean it can be duplicated to perfection,” Weis says. “When getting inspiration from national websites or

Advice from Wedding Planners blogs, keep in mind where the wedding was held and if the same things are available in your town—especially the rentals.” Also, if you cut and paste all your ideas from other weddings, you may miss a chance to have something truly original. “Some wedding planners are great designers as well as being skilled event
planners,” says Weiss. “So if you want your wedding to be unique and different, don’t imitate every idea you see on what’s hot and in. We have great resources that can customize and truly make your wedding your own!” In general, Weis advises brides to stay focused on the big picture, not the tiny details
and things that they can’t control. Remember it’s going to be a beautiful day when you marry the love of your life and as Weis says: “Keep your eye on the prize!” FAMILY ISSUES….EVERYONE’S GOT ‘EM Speaking of things brides can’t control….most families have some members who don’t get along or could be potentially embarrassing. Littelpage advises brides: “You just have to let those things go. Try not to let it get to you or preoccupy you.” The family dynamic was that way before the wedding and will most likely be that way after. “Inform your planner of potential issues regarding seating and relationships and she will take it from there,” Littlepage says.

AND FINALLY….BE NICE! Remember to treat your planner and vendors with respect. If you treat them as hired help, they will give you exactly what you paid for. But if you go out of your way to send a thank-you during the planning process, vendors appreciate it and will give you the above-and-beyond treatment for your big day. “We planners cry at weddings, too,” admits Kristin Weis. “Maybe not every weekend, but if you look closely, we most likely will shed a tear before you walk down the aisle, a beautiful toast written by your significant other or your dance with dad. PIck a thEME Who says you have to stick to a restaurant? Why not have a seaside clambake or a bar-b-cue in the park? Have the dinner at a local winery or make it a fun night in a bowling alley. Focus the theme around the couple’s interests and backgrounds. This will make it a fun night for everyone and help take the edge off any pre-wedding stress. (Continued on next page)

Rehearsal Dinner (Continued from previous page)
4
coNsider the GUest list While the guest list for the rehearsal dinner is usually the wedding party and family members, consider inviting out of town guests who may otherwise be spending the
evening alone in their hotel room. It could make for a fun-filled rehearsal dinner party!
5
Give a toast It’s customary for the host of the rehearsal dinner – typically the groom’s parents – to greet everyone and give any necessary instructions.
After the meal, the host can offer a toast to the couple then play emcee, passing the mic around for others who would like to say a few words.
6
offer thaNk yoU’s aNd Gifts The bride and groom should always give a public thank you to the host of the rehearsal dinner as well as to everyone who has come out for the occasion. The rehearsal dinner is also a good time to give out gifts to your wedding party. The wedding day will be busy and bustling. So, taking the time at the rehearsal dinner to offer gifts and appreciate the love and support of friends and family is a good idea.
7
last miNUte frieNdly remiNders The rehearsal dinner is the perfect opportunity for the bride and groom (or, more likely, the wedding planner) to give any last minute instructions or reminders about the wedding day. Make sure everyone knows when and where they are supposed to be and confirm any transportation or lodging arrangements for out of town guests. ♥
Romantic venue perfect for intimate receptions, rehearsal dinners, showers and celebrations
The bride and groom should always give a public thank you to the host of the rehearsal dinner as well as to everyone who has come out for the occasion.

MAKING IT LEGAL
Though procuring a wedding license isn’t quite as complicated as the wedding itself, it helps to know the rules. Here they are: 1 All applicants in Missouri and Illinois must receive a license before the ceremony; Saint Louis Bride recommends a minimum of 24 hours. Blood tests are not required in either state. 2 A Missouri license is valid for thirty days from its effective date; an Illinois license for sixty days. 3 Both bride and groom must apply in person. In Missouri, you may apply for a license at any office provided the wedding is to take place within the state. In Illinois, you must apply for and receive a license from the county in which the ceremony will take place. CITY OF ST. LOUIS City Hall, 1200 Market Street, Room 127 Hours: 8a.m.-5p.m. Mon.-Fri.
