Anything Goes If one thing is certain about couples today, it’s this—anything goes! Brides are wearing white, ivory and even pink dresses. Cakes can be the tallest of towers or as small as donuts (yes, donuts!). Roses, lilies, orchids and greenery are being spotted in bouquets of every shape and size. Guest lists are both long and short. Reception venues run the gamut from elaborate ballrooms to outdoor tents to the bride’s own backyard. St. Louis bride Annie Cosby (Home, Shrine, Castle, page 154) fell in love with hubby Michael Doyle in Ireland. They had a simple ceremony in St. Louis
Page 154
Some couples incorporated four-legged friends at their events. Ashley and Matthew Albert (page 66), Marissa and Bryan Ashley (page 98) and Karli and Andrew Davis (page 74) had their beloved pets make cameo appearances on their wedding days. Jenna and Riley Howell’s (page 96) love for llamas were woven through their wedding day details, including a guest llama! Linda and Ryan’s love for Star Wars was made clear at their August nuptials when they entered the reception to Star Wars music with lightsabers in hand (page 100)! Page 100
Whether you consider yourself to be a hopeless romantic, modern chic or wild child, you’re sure to find something in our pages that will tickle your fancy or inspire you to do something outside the conventional wedding box.

Emily Miller began her journey in 2010 when she started her makeup and hair company, Emily Miller Makeup & Hair. She has worked with celebrity clients Karlie Kloss, Joe Biden, William Shatner, ‘Glee’ Actress Erinn Westbrook, Olympian Shawn Johnson, Victoria’s Secret Devon Windsor along with numerous other sportscasters, TV personalities and corporate clients. In 2014, Emily was the first in the area to develop a Professional Makeup Artist Certification and has trained close to 100 makeup artists of which she calls upon to help out when there is a large group of clients to service. In addition, she hand selects hair stylists whom she believes represent her clean, classic style to help out with larger groups as well. Together, they take the worry and anxiety out of a bride’s special day. Emily is a frequent contributor to Saint Louis Bride.
6 CARLY LEIBACH 2 ASHLEE ERLINGER
Shadow and Light is a photography and cinema company founded by Amy & Andrew Meyerott and Joel & Shannon Conner. They have a combined experience of over 20 years in the wedding industry in both St. Louis and around the world. Their approach focuses on both creating unique, dynamic portraits and capturing unscripted moments and memories on the wedding day. They have a passion for family, travel, great food and fun! “Photographing at the Fabulous Fox was a dream come true. For this shoot we worked as a team, with Joel and Amy as the primary photographers.”
Ashlee fell in love with weddings in 2008 and never looked back. After launching Signed Sealed Delivered Events in 2013, she’s welcomed countless clients into her heart as well as a crew of love addicts to her planning team. While designing and coordinating are a few of her favorite things, it’s the relationships with her clients that really takes the (wedding) cake! This is Ashlee’s second contribution to Saint Louis Bride.

3 KATIE DALY Katie’s addiction to love started from a young age while planning weddings for her Barbies and her older brothers’ G.I. Joes. After performing for 5 years as a professional ballet dancer, she joined the Signed Sealed Delivered

Cheers to 10 Years! Since 2009, Off White has featured an annual event for hip and fun couples. Off White - THE WEDDING SHOW was founded by Brea McAnally, owner of Brea Photography and caretaker of The Luminary, as she saw a need in St. Louis for a wedding show that was more personal, unique, and more in tune to the needs of slightly off-beat couples. In 2012, Allissa Reimer, owner of Altar’d Events, joined the Off White crew and eventually took over production following the 2015 event. Unlike the big-box wedding shows you might be used to, Off White - THE WEDDING SHOW focuses on unique and personal service. In October of 2018, the Off White brand expanded to include THE COLLECTIVE in addition to THE WEDDING SHOW, offering another platform to feature amazing, independent vendors who value personal relationships, authentic celebrations and love in all forms. The10th Anniversary event will be hosted at Wild Carrot on Sunday, March 3 from 1-4pm. Tickets are available online at offwhitestl.com 44

“Sometimes the things that go wrong turn out to be the most special wedding memories. When we think of our wedding day, we expect the most perfect day of our lives! But just like life and just like marriage, things will not always go as planned. There will be some dysfunction and disappointment, someone will be late, the weather might not be great, but there is going to be a whole lot of laughter, celebration and love, so embrace it!” —ADVICE FOR BRIDES- OR GROOMS-TO-BE

“Think about the things that you both care most about for your wedding day and prioritize them on a list. Sometimes it feels like there are specific things every couple must do at their wedding. But remember, there are no rules for weddings! If you feel pressure to do things a certain way, reference your list. It should give you the confidence to make decisions that result in what you both value.” —ADVICE FOR BRIDES- OR GROOMS-TO-BE

“Between the ceremony and reception, we went to The Fortune Teller Bar to partake in the annual Cinco de Mayo festival on Cherokee Street (couldn’t resist the May 5 timing). It was a bit of a crazy idea and kind of stressful in the moment because of the crowd and traffic, but completely worth it! Walking into the crowded bar wearing a wedding dress and veil was something I never thought I would do. People were definitely surprised by our big formal group joining the party, and we got lots of smiles and congratulations. We did a quick toast then headed to our next photo stop. I have to give a special shout-out to our trolley driver JoAnn for maneuvering through the busy neighborhood and getting us everywhere on time!”—CAROL'S MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT

“Jeremiah and I were pulled outside halfway through dinner to take couples photos as the sun set. As we walked back into the tent, everyone had already left their meal and gone to the dance floor before any speeches or first dances. To see that everyone was as happy and having as much fun as we were was a truly special moment.”—ELIZABETH'S MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT

We made St. Louis-themed gift bags for all the guests who stayed at the hotel, which included Dad’s oatmeal cookies, Billy Goat chips, Fitz’s Root Beer, and a chocolate bar with the St. Louis skyline. Bride + Ale PHOTOGRAPHY BY JONATHAN POLLACK WEDDINGS
D
id you know that the Old English word for “bridal” is brydealo, a combination of bryd (bride), and ealo (ale)? Bride + ale = bridal. This is proof that beer is the perfect complement to any wedding celebra-
tion. Old Bakery Beer Company (OBBC) sits in downtown Alton, IL, right across the Mississippi River from St. Louis in the beautiful old Colonial Bakery building. OBBC’s event space draws in couples who want an industrial venue with a lot of character and seek to enhance rather than bury the space’s existing aesthetic. That is exactly what stylist (and OBBC regular) Bailey Shaw did when planning for this styled wedding photoshoot involving sets for both a ceremony and a reception with a lounge area. The color palette pulled the light yellows and blues from the event space’s brick walls and a beautiful dark pink inspired by OBBC’s seasonal beer, Hibiscus Tart. Shaw fell in love with the brick walls at the venue, and they were able to transfer that aspect into the invitation design.

HE WEDDING OF PRINCE HARRY of Wales to American actress Meghan Markle
captivated audiences around the world. According to a Nielsen report, more than 29 million viewers in the United States tuned in to watch the royal wedding at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. Photos and articles about the couple appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers around the world. The “Meghan effect” has led to an increase in the classic, elegant wedding trends featured in the royal wedding.

BRIDAL GOWNS Meghan Markle wore a simple, elegant gown with a wide boat neckline, long sleeves, and a sweeping train designed by Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy. While brides are not requesting a reproduction of the royal wedding gown, they are seeking that classic feel. “When we ask brides to describe how they want to look and feel on their wedding day, more so than a year ago the answer is timeless and elegant. That usually translates into a gown that is classic and doesn’t have a lot of detail or extravagance to it,” says Debbie (Continued on page 189)

Shroud Cay in the Exumas
Harbour Island’s famous pink sand beaches get their color from thousands of tiny pieces of coral, shells and calcium carbonate. ISLAND HOPPING In total, the Bahamas includes about 700 islands, 30 of which are inhabited. It would be impossible to explore them all in the span of one honeymoon, but there are a couple of spots that are worth checking out. And Nassau is the perfect launching point for discovering the islands in all their splendor. Harbour Island is famous for the natural beauty of its pink sand beaches. According to research, the pink tones are made from thousands of tiny pieces of coral, shells and calcium carbonate. Or you can learn more about the Bahamas’ fascinating history with visits to sites Dean’s Blue Hole like the Adderley’s Plantation and Long Island Museum. Don’t leave Long Island without seeing the gorgeous azure waters of Dean’s Blue Hole, the second deepest bay in the world. You definitely don’t want to miss the Exumas, surrounded by gorgeous aquamarine water and the vibes of a relaxed, casual Caribbean feel. Great Exuma is the largest island, but even its capital, George Town, doesn’t have a traffic light. From George Town, you can reach the island of Big Major Cay (or “Pig Beach”) and partake in the unique experience of taking a dip with the famous swimming pigs. 114

A Bahama Honeymoon You don’t have to limit your honeymoon to sun, surf and sand. Nassau's food, entertainment and culture are absolutely worth exploring. BEYOND THE BEACHES While the beaches are the main attraction of Nassau, you don’t have to limit your honeymoon to sun, surf and sand. The city’s food, entertainment and culture are absolutely worth exploring. Spend the morning checking out the downtown area, shopping in the Nassau Straw Market. Or take a stroll down the cobblestones of West Hill Street – part of Graycliff Historical Village – where you'll feel like you're stepping back in time. Nassau is home to the land of cacao beans, making it the perfect place to take your love of chocolate to the next level. Visit the Graycliff Chocolatier Factory and learn how to mix and match ingredients like lime and mango with your chocolate. Bahamian food is an interesting combination of southern American staples and spicy Caribbean seafood cuisine. Enjoy a delicious conch dish, baked crab or peas and rice by candlelight for a romantic evening out before hitting the town. The city has everything from live music and intimate bars to nightclubs, casinos and trendy cocktails. From fun nights out, relaxing days on the beach and exciting new adventures together, it’s no surprise that Nassau is a favorite spot for honeymooners. What could be more romantic than escaping to paradise?
CAST-AWAY FANTASIES What could be more romantic than you and your new spouse on a secluded beach? Checking into a remote private island is a bucket-list honeymoon and may be easier to do than you think. The barefoot chic style of Kamalame Cay, Bahamas is one of the best-kept secrets in the islands. The north side of the island holds 19 villas, each with private verandas that are draped in blooming Parliament Square
bougainvillea and gauzy curtains that billow in the island breeze. Grab your snorkeling gear and paddle out to the Andros Great Barrier Reef—the third largest reef in the world—and take in some of the most breathtaking natural beauty in the region. Then head back to shore for a massage in the over-water spa before making your way to the tiki bar for a pre-dinner cocktail. Slow

Royal COLORS This styled shoot takes its inspiration from the architecture of the Main Street Abbey
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHADOW AND LIGHT
T
he Main Street Abbey inspired this shoot with its pristine white walls and archways above the original stained glass windows. “Coupled with Megan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding this spring and the abundance of TV series portray-
ing the history of royalty, we knew we had to bring our own royal wedding to life in this rehabbed church. The color palette was an easy one, as we wanted to include fresh fruits, desserts and the charcuterie spread as table decoration just like in early modern European feasting tables.” Gold vessels of overflowing greenery and white peonies danced along the walls and table accented by citrus and handpainted blue place settings (also mimicked in the gorgeous cake)! And, what royal wedding is complete without a crown and sparkler party?

Nine sweet reasons that will leave you infatuated with frosting

VERY HOSTESS wants dessert to be her dinner’s crowning glory. Her guests should say, “Wow” when they see it, be
eager to taste it and should know immediately that it was chosen and prepared to be the perfect culmination of a special event. If that event is a wedding, and the dessert is the wedding cake, it represents an age-old tradition, but one that has definitely evolved with the times. Once upon a time, the cake was expected to be white, the frosting whiter, and the adornments limited to the baker’s ability to manipulate spun sugar and buttercream. Today, cakes are constructed with tiers and columns atop pedestals. The cake can be any flavor or multi-flavored, and the decor can include a number of things like a miniature bride and groom, sugar or fresh flowers and even a replica of the family pet. The taste, texture, color and architecture of contemporary wedding cakes are bounded only by the limits of one’s imagination. As a style element, cake design can be almost free form, but the significance of the wedding cake takes center stage in the traditional cake-cutting ceremony, the first task the newly-married couple perform jointly as hubby and wife. Seven Things to Discuss Before “I Do” And how premarital counseling can help navigate the tough topics
YOUR WEDDING will be one of the best and most memorable days of
your life. But it’s still just one beautiful, fun-filled, wonderful day. What about all the days after the Big Day? We spend lots of time, effort and money on our wedding day, but what it means to actually be married can get lost in the centerpieces and signature cocktails. Barabara Koppe, MSW, is the owner of The Marriage & Family Institute in Clayton, MO and has been counseling couples for over 20 years. She says many couples are often surprised that marriage actually requires work. “When couples are young and in love, it’s very romantic and people think it will always be that way,” Koppe said. “But it’s not always going to be the fairytale, and that’s normal. Your love and mar142
riage will be tested. It’s how you work through challenges that can make or break your marriage.” Is it possible to prepare for the pitfalls? To learn to better deal with adversity when it comes your way? Absolutely, and the following seven issues are ones that are essential to talk about with your beloved to help you have a happy and healthy marriage. 1. FAMILIES OF ORIGIN When talking about families of origin, it’s a two-fold category—how much our families are going to influence and be a part of our marriage, and how our childhood and family affects (Continued on page 185)

Winter ROMANCE
This opulent shoot depicts a celebration of love that is powerful and grand PHOTOGRAPHY BY PINXIT PHOTO & CINEMA With an “Elegant Winter Romance” in mind as the theme, the goal of this styled shoot was to showcase the beautiful details of a winter wedding in St. Louis. The luxurious Barnett on Washington served as the perfect setting, as its regal interior provided an ample amount of backdrops for the couple to capture unforgettable memories of their special day. The rich color scheme of navy, maroon, and gold coupled with Belli Fiori’s sophisticated floral designs and Mia Grace Bridal’s romantic bridal selections helped bring this shoot to life.

Celestial STYLE PHOTOGRAPHS BY ELIZABETH LLOYD PHOTOGRAPHY
The moon and the stars have always been so romanticized and have been a constant in love. Altar'd Events tried to capture the whimsy and playfulness while keeping it elegant and accessible. After providing the creative team with inspiration, seeing how they interpreted it was so much fun and so telling of their individual styles. When it came together, everything blended so well and created such a gorgeous final product.

nnie Cosby studied abroad for a semester in Ireland, and fell in love with the country. She loved it so
much that she returned there to live for a time after graduating from college. She also fell for a boy she had met there named Michael Doyle. Though they had met briefly during her time in school there, her second stint on the Emerald Isle proved this Irishman was a keeper. Due to immigration requirements, the couple had a simple ceremony in St. Louis at a relative’s home, incorporating a Celtic knot ceremony. Then it was time for a party in St. Louis, and finally, a party across the pond. For the St. Louis celebration, the couple chose a colorful vintage circus theme, replete with a petting

mix of moody and bright florals set off this lavish fig and honey theme. “When Angela and I started planning, we both agreed we wanted to see more color in
the bridal scene without losing an ounce of elegance.” Inspiration came from the fresh fig, with its dark and subtle exterior and the surprising contrast of the bright and textured interior. “What came next was a group of amazing vendors all bringing their own touches to really pull the whole concept together in a way that was better than we could have imagined.” Collaborating with such a talented group of women was a joy. The honeyed hues and soft greys lend a romantic air, while the burgundy and fuchsia florals add depth and interest.

WINTER Though it’s the least busy season for weddings, a winter wedding offers several perks. In fact, being a less popular time is in itself an advantage. Jodell Larkin, owner of Starry Night Events said, “A winter wedding can set yours apart from all the weddings you went to in June or in the fall. You probably aren’t going to back-to-back wedding during the winter.”

Simcha Lourie of Simcha’s Events says a January or February wedding can be the party people are happy to attend in the midst of cold temperatures and gray days. “The business of the holidays is over and we tend to hibernate. But people will gladly come out to celebrate a wedding.” Winter months can mean that prime venues and vendors are more available. “We have a lot of great talent in St. Louis and some vendors, like photographers, can book up one to even two years in advance during peak months,” said Allissa Reimer of Altar’d Events. Being a season with more availability may also bring a little more bang for your buck. Lourie said, “Some venues and caterers may be more willing to negotiate for off-season rates. You might be able to get some extra hors d’oeuvres or upgrade your bar

regardless of the date, the price will be the same. Wedding planners, photographers, a band…. these all fall into that category.” Another way to save money is to take advantage of churches and venues that are already decorated for the holidays. also one of the busiest. The logistics of transporting the wedding party among the photography locations, ceremony site, and reception venue without anyone getting lost or throwing off the schedule can be complicated. Many couples decide to provide transportation on their wedding day, either for themselves or for the entire wedding party. Depending on your budget and preferences, there are many options for getting from location to location with ease. Do you want to make a grand getaway from the reception or do you want a simple way to travel with your friends? PARTY BUS If you want to get the party started with the members of your wedding party, a mini-coach or party bus might be the best option. Party buses enhance the social aspect of your wedding day by allowing the group to spend time together as they travel safely and efficiently between sites. Best Transportation offers a fleet of vehicles to accommodate wedding parties both small and large and come with variety of interior options to meet your budget needs. The 14-passenger Mercedes sprinter van features black leather seats and a spacious interior. Mini coaches vary from 13 to 41 passengers and motor coaches accommodate up to 57 passengers. “We find that couples want to transport people from the ceremony venue to photo sites and finally drop them off at the reception site. Especially if members of the wedding party aren’t local, this is a great way to socialize, keep the schedule moving, and transport everyone safely,” says Nikita Sanders, special events manager for Best Transportation. LIMOUSINES AND CLASSIC CARS A traditional limousine offers a more intimate way to travel. If you have a smaller wedding party or if you and your fiancé prefer some alone time between events, a limousine may be the best choice. A limousine, Lincoln Town Car, or Cadillac also may be used as a getaway car for the bride and groom following the ceremony or reception. If your fiancé is a car aficionado, consider surprising him with a vintage ride. Best Transportation offers a a 1960 Silver Cloud II Bentley Rolls-Royce available as an add-on to any shuttle rental of 13 passengers or more. Appy Couple
Joy is a one-stop shop for organizing all those tedious wedding details. It has built-in templates for RSVPs, schedules, hotels and more. But its hottest feature is allowing you to collect and share all of the photos that your guests take on the big day. It works like a private social media page, enabling anyone who uses the app to share images.
Wedding planning involves a lot of communication with your guests. Appy Couple helps to manage things like your guest list, invitations and venue directions as well as share photos and so much more. Choose a gorgeous design that looks like something out of a trendy Etsy shop, then input all the details into the app. Guests can simply login to get the info they need, and you don’t have to deal with a million texts and phone calls.

Tripit
Seating arrangements at the reception can be a pain when you’re trying to keep all your guests happy. Table Plan makes things easier by enabling you to add guests then move them around on screen. By setting a few specific restrictions, the app can even automatically plan the table settings for you.
Tracking down mailing addresses for invitations can be a nightmare. Postable makes it easy for you to pop in your guests’ email addresses and drop them a quick email with a simple hassle-free address request form.
The wedding is over, and it’s time for the honeymoon. Don’t get stuck in a wild email (or worse, paper) scramble on the way to the airport. Tripit collects all your travel information in one place, giving you easy access to your itinerary, flight and hotel information in an easy-to-read format right at your fingertips. ♥

Seven Things to Discuss Before “I Do” (Continued from page 142)) the way we communicate. John Cordray, LPC, of Cordray Counseling in St. Louis, says you and your future spouse should talk about how involved your parents are going to be in your marriage, and what your and both sets of parents’ expectations are. If you plan on having children, you and your husband should also agree on how involved they’ll be in the lives of their grandchildren. Before getting married, Susan Hamilton and her sister had dinner at their parents’ house
John Cordray says there is going to be conflict in every union, and knowing how your partner communicates is essential. “Does he get quiet and shut down? She assumed she and her husband Tom would continue the tradition, but Tom had other ideas. “After a few months, Tom finally told me he kind of resented having every Sunday night scheduled at my parents’ house,” Hamilton said. “He was fine with me going, but he didn’t feel the need to go every week. We worked it out so we’d have a monthly dinner with my parents, not weekly. But it would have been better if we had discussed it earlier, for us and my parents.” “You have to separate somewhat from your families to put your relationship first,” Koppe said. “A couple should think about: ‘How do we balance the needs for me vs. the needs for we?’

Seven Things to Discuss Before “I Do” Family can greatly influence a couple. It’s O.K. to say ‘We’ll get back to you about that’ rather than an automatic ‘You know I can’t say no to my mother.’” Speaking of how things are said and how your family of origin effects the way you and your spouse communicate….
2. ARE YOU A LEAVER OR A FIGHTER? Kelly DeVere-Rodgers, LPC, was a counselor in St. Louis for many years and believes really educating ourselves about our spouse and his family is key to a successful relationship. “Learning how your fiancé grew up and how he deals with conflict plays out in all aspects

of marriage,” DeVere-Rodgers said. “It can help us understand his emotional needs and his communication style.” And healthy communication is a huge part of marriage, of course. John Cordray says there is going to be conflict in every union, and knowing how your partner communicates is essential. “Does he get quiet and shut down? Is he more aggressive, maybe a screamer?” said Cordray. Maybe he pulls away at the first sign of trouble or he fights to win. Knowing the differences in your communication styles and talking about them can help keep arguments manageable and in control.
Money is definitely not a sexy topic, but one that must be discussed before sharing your life with someone. Some financial questions to talk about: How are we going to budget? Who is going to pay for what? How much should we save? How do we view debt? 3. INTIMACY When newly married, there are strong feelings of lust and infatuation between the man and woman. So strong, perhaps, that couples may assume it is always going to be that way. “Passion can die down, but that doesn’t mean sex is not still enjoyable,” Koppe said. “The husband and wife may have different sex drives, and sex may take more planning. Guys can get turned on more quickly, while women often need a more emotional connection. Generally, she needs to feel an emotional connection before sex, while he feels it in the context of sex. Couples have to work through these differences so that both don’t end up feeling rejected. Though it can be a difficult subject, couples must talk about it to work through it.”

Seven Things to Discuss Before “I Do” How the other person feels loved is an important thing to know and understand about their spouse, said Cordray. “A wife or husband may assume that the other person feels loved the way that they feel loved. But how someone feels loved is often quite different from how their partner feels loved. It could be physical intimacy, affection, romantic gifts or gestures, or just spending quality time together.” DeVere-Rodgers cited a study that showed the different needs of men and women. “The top two things men needed from their wives were physical intimacy and recreational companionship, while the women’s top two needs from their husbands were affection and intimate conversation.”
7. THE LONG VIEW No one is expected to plan out their entire life (especially in the midst of planning a wedding!) but having some discussions about your long-term future is a good idea. Can you never imagine leaving the town you’re in, or have you always wanted to live in California,
or abroad? Is the job you have now OK for now, but you’d really love to go to graduate school or change careers? Even if you’re not sure how serious you are about these things, it doesn’t hurt to bring up the possibilities to your future spouse.
4. MONEY Money is definitely not a sexy topic, but one that must be discussed before sharing your life with someone. Some basic financial questions to talk about: How are we going to budget? Who is going to pay for what? How much should we save? How do we view debt? Koppe suggests that in addition to a joint account, each person have their own account with an agreed-upon amount or percentage that they can spend any way they want without asking permission of the other. “Money is power and one person should not have all the control and say-so,” Koppe said. 5. CHILDREN Perhaps nothing changes the dynamic of a marriage more than having children. Couples should talk about whether they want children, how many, and when they would like to have them. Other issues that should be brought to the table are what you envision your parenting style to be and the division of responsibilities regarding childcare. 6. RELIGION Religion may or may not be a factor for a couple, but if it is, couples should discuss what their religious lives will look like, said Koppe. “A couple should talk about how they are going to raise their kids and celebrate the holidays, especially if they are of different faiths,” said Koppe. She said other questions to ask themselves are if they plan to attend services every week, contribute financially to their religious community and ethical issues regarding the teachings of their faith.

Seven Things to Discuss Before “I Do” HOW DO YOU TALK ABOUT ALL THIS? GO TO THE PROS This is tough stuff—talking about our childhoods, families, sex, money, kids, religion, the future. And all while planning a wedding, with its myriad of decisions and details. “People can forget about the marriage when planning the wedding,” said
DeVere-Rodgers. “But premarital counseling is your first step in really committing to your life together. You must put time and effort into your marriage, not just your wedding day.” DeVere-Rodgers is a big believer in premarital counseling and when she had her practice, she required nine sessions of therapy, about once a

month in a year-long engagement. She would then see the couple at least three times after the wedding. The couples would discuss and work through a variety of issues and have “homework” to do away from her time with them. “Premarital counseling can really help teach couples how to deal with conflict—to talk about what could happen and how to prepare and what to do when it does,” Cordray says. He also recommends counseling during that first year of marriage. “The newlyweds talk

Marriage is not a cure-all—it doesn’t change the person after you say ‘I do.’ It takes a lot of work to be successful at it.” And the most successful couples have worked through challenges together, said Koppe, referring to a study of people that have been married at least 10 years. “The couples said they were actually happier now than they were at the start of their marriages, because they’ve worked through adversity together.” What if your fiancé is reluctant to go to therapy? If you can get him in the door, the therapist can help him see how it will be helpful to both of you, Koppe said. “The therapist is not going to try to read your mind, tell you what to do or beat up on you. They just want to help you learn ways to more effectively communicate with the person you love.” And just as you start your life together, you may be thinking of saving up for a new home. Cordray said, “Think of therapy as an investment in your marriage, the best gift you can give your new wife or husband.” ♥

The Royal Effect HAIR AND MAKEUP Soft, radiant, and natural describe the makeup Meghan Markle wore for her wedding, a look that was light enough not to cover her freckles. Savanah Moore, owner of Savanah Summer Luxury Hair and Makeup, says at least half of her brides are requesting a similar look.
“Their exact words are timeless, classic, simple. They want to look like themselves and feel like themselves,” says Moore. The look centers around the eyes and face makeup. Brides are asking for glowing, dewy skin versus a matte finish. “They want their faces to look as natural,

Brides are choosing to forgo elements such as beading and lace, but many are following Markle’s lead by accessorizing with a more elaborate veil. “We are seeing more brides who are choosing the classic, elegant look with the dress are enjoying

and appreciating what an extravagant veil can do for them, particularly in their images and while walking down the aisle,” says Rudawsky. Rudawsky adds that a veil may become an heirloom piece that is passed down to future generations, much more so than a wedding gown. “The reality is, probably no one else will wear your bridal gown. But a veil may be handed down from mothers to daughters and daughters-in-law,” she says. One trend from the royal wedding that hasn’t caught on with brides – the tiara. “I really thought we might see an uptick in tiaras, but we have not,” says Rudawsky. “Brides definitely love to have some kind of hairpiece to add drama, especially for the reception after they remove the veil.” Elaborate clips of combs, garland, and halos that sit on top of the head are popular choices, but the full-on tiara that stands up from the crown of the head are not as popular.

The Royal Effect glowing, and fresh as possible. I don’t use a lot of heavy contouring. No smoky eyes. I enhance the natural eyelash and avoid using fake. I use cream and taupe eyeshadows with a little bit of eyeliner although some brides prefer no eyeliner. I use an airbrush for a natural, light application that looks like skin,” says Moore.
For the lips, most brides want a neutral lip. Not nude, but a color that enhances the natural color of the lip. For her wedding, Markle wore a low, loose bun with a few wisps of hair framing her face. Moore says some brides choose to wear their hair down for their wedding, but those who prefer an up-do

request a simple, low bun similar to Markle’s. “We aren’t seeing a lot of sleek, tight up-dos. Most brides prefer the organic, natural look of the loose, low bun,” says Moore. Moore says the natural look appeals to brides because it is so comfortable. It’s important to brides that they turn heads because they look beautiful, not because the look is such a dramatic departure from their everyday appearance. They want their guests, and especially their fiancé, to recognize them. CAKE The royal wedding cake, from Claire Ptak of London’s Violet Bakery, featured multiple tiers of different sized cakes sitting on separate platforms. The cakes were “rough iced” and topped with fresh flowers. Harry and Meghan chose lemon elderflower as the flavor of the cake, breaking from the royal wedding tradition of fruit cake. Ericka Frank, owner of the Cakery Bakery, thought the royal wedding cake was gorgeous and has had brides asking for cakes similar to Ptak’s creation. One couple even brought a picture of the royal wedding cake. “We don’t have the royal gold-gilded wedding stands, but brides are creating their own look with a trio or combination of cakes on separate plates instead of stacked. Depending on the number of guests, brides are doing three or more cakes,” says Frank. As with the royal wedding cake, not all the cake served has to be part of the presentation cake. Brides may focus on the visual arrangement they want and add extra cake servings in the kitchen. Frank says along with the arrangement, the icing of the royal cake has been a big part of replicating the look. “For the past few years we have had quite a few brides asking for what we call a plaster or stucco frosted cake, but with a smoothed edge. The royal wedding cake took that look even further by not smoothing the edges, which leaves a crown of icing around the top. It looks lovely and luscious and we’ve had brides ask specifically for that look,” says Frank. Fresh flowers have long been a popular way to decorate a wedding cake but the way the flowers are arranged has changed dramatically. Instead of clusters of flowers, cake designers use cascades of flowers at different parts of the cake. The change is part of the trend to move away from the rustic look toward a more natural look. “To me, fresh flowers are the only way to appropriately decorate this type of cake because

it is such a natural look. Anything piped or sculpted doesn’t give a cohesive look. Natural blooms are so gorgeous on that style of cake and they are the best way to add color to a wedding cake,” says Frank. While she hasn’t had anyone ask for lemon elderflower cake yet, Frank says couples are interested in nontraditional flavors or offering more than one flavor of cake at their reception. “Couples really love our chocolate chip cake. Strawberry or lemon are not traditional wedding cake flavors but are very popular. Banana cake with cinnamon buttercream icing for a fall wedding is delicious,” she says. One thing Frank stresses to couples is not to sacrifice taste for beauty. “Couples want a wedding cake that tastes as amazing as it looks. Often guests will remember a cake that tastes great but may not remember the presentation. We try to achieve both,” says Frank.
topped with white garden roses and peonies. PRINCESS FOR A DAY Brides may achieve the classic, timeless look and feel of the royal wedding without replicating it. “I think the one thing any royal wedding bring to mind is how a bride wants to feel on her wed-
ding day. We’ve had more brides say they want to feel like a princess and I think the royal wedding brought that to mind,” says Rudawsky. “That’s exactly how she should feel on her wedding day, a princess on top of the world with her prince.” And hopefully they live happily ever after. ♥
FLOWERS Markle’s wedding bouquet by florist Philippa Craddock featured flowers that were significant to both her and Prince Harry, such as the forget-me-nots that were a favorite of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana. Many of the flowers in Markle’s bouquet came from the couple’s garden at Kensington Palace. David Bovier, owner of Ken Miesner’s Flower Shoppe, says he has seen many brides choosing the smaller, loose bouquet similar to Markle’s. “Brides are choosing tailored bouquets with a loose but not messy look. Bohemian chic is gone. Brides are looking for a modern take on the classic bouquet,” says Bovier. While brides may not have flowers with the strong sentimentality of the forget-menots in Markle’s bouquet, many are choosing to incorporate herbs, which have traditional wedding symbolism. Herbs such as lavender (devotion), rosemary (remembrance), sage (long life), and thyme (courage), may be used in the bouquets. There is one trend from the royal wedding that Bovier has noticed with his brides. “I’ve seen a lot more emphasis on beautiful, lush greenery in the ceremony space,” he says. “Archways around entrance doors and lots of greenery inside are popular.” At the royal wedding, the entrance of St. George’s Chapel was adorned with an arch of greenery and white flowers. The interior of the chapel also featured magnificent foliage that included a base of greenery such as astilbe and asparagus fern SPRING/SUMMER 2019 • WWW.BRIDESTL.COM

June is still holding strong as one of the most popular months to get married. Similar to spring, there are lots of colors and themes appropriate to the season, from a garden party to a tropical take to a carnival motif. Of course, winter weather in St. Louis can be a gamble and extreme conditions could affect your guest list, especially the out-of-towners, with cancelled flights and sketchy road conditions. “But a wedding around the holidays can boost attendance if people are coming to St. Louis anyway,” Larkin said. One way to look at the limitations of the winter weather is that you know what you’re in for—you won’t be planning an outdoor reception or having long picture-taking sessions outside. Like all the decisions you make when planning your wedding, it depends on what’s most important to you and your future spouse. SPRING While winter is more restricted for outdoor pictures, possibilities abound for spring

But spring in St. Louis can also be unpredictable and Lourie recommends a back-up plan for all events planned outdoors. “I had a bride with a beautiful outdoor wedding planned for late Spring, in May, and it was unseasonably cold and rainy,” Lourie said. Wedding planners have lived through all the unexpected scenarios and can help you arrange a Plan B to put your mind at ease. Some current trends lend themselves well to a spring wedding, such the eco-friendly, sustainable approach, says McDonald. “The light, airy, woodland-type look goes well with spring and you can incorporate lots of organic elements.” SUMMER June is still holding strong as one of the most popular months to get married, though it now is slightly behind September and October. themes appropriate to the season, from a garden party to a tropical take to a carnival motif. Larkin notes some current styles that lend themselves well to summer weddings: “Floating lace on wedding gowns, as well as very simple dresses like Meghan Markle’s, would be lovely for a wedding in the summer,” Larkin said. She also notes incorporating pineapples, a symbol of hospitality, into table decorations is predicted to be popular for 2019, and would be perfect for summer. Not to mention delicious pineapple-infused cocktails, foods and desserts. Lots of hours of light means lots of time for celebration at outdoor receptions, though the intensity of the light might affect photos outside. And it does seem to be getting warmer sooner in the year, one reason Allissa Reimer thinks she may be seeing more weddings moved up to May,

What’s not to love about fall? Perhaps only that everybody loves it, and that can cause prices to go up and availability to go down. “In addition to fall weddings being so popular, it’s also gala season in St. Louis, which means even less availability at some of the larger venues,” Lourie said. SO, WHAT DATE TO SAVE? Your wedding date is going to be your wedding date forever, obviously. But don’t get too bogged down in getting married on a certain Saturday in a particular month. “Things can be customized year-round,” McDonald said. “Whatever is important to the couple is what will be executed.” Discuss with your spouse what matters most to you both, your top priorities for the day. And contact a wedding planner before booking any venues or signing on any dotted lines. “You can use design and décor for any space at any time of year,” echoed Reimer. “We want the celebration to be a true reflection of the couple’s love story. The day should express what they like, and who they are, and for it to have an authentic feeling.” Lourie also emphasized the importance of the wedding personifying you as a couple. “And as long as you think about your and your guests’ experience, everyone is happy to celebrate with you, no matter what the season.

HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE Being whisked away from your wedding ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage may conjure up visions of Cinderella, but you don’t need a fairy godmother to make it happen. St. Louis Carriage Company offers elegant carriages pulled by black, white, or dapple gray Percherons. The company also has one Belgian draft horse and recently added a Clydesdale to its stable. Carriages are available in a variety of colors and sizes. The carriage drivers dress in formal wear and the horses’ manes may be braided with ribbons to match your wedding colors.
style but have an extra seat so they may accommodate 9 to 12 people. Carriage rides are available year-round although during the hot summer months the horses have time restrictions to make sure they get adequate rest, shade, and water. While it’s always wise to book early, LaFrieda says the company typically
can accommodate reservations less than a month in advance except during the busy Christmas season. TROLLEY Another unique way to transport your entire wedding party is by trolley. Sharon Burnett, manager of St. Louis Trolley Company, says the
Transportation vendors advise couples not to delay making reservations. Limousines and party buses are more in demand at certain times of the year, such as during prom in the spring and homecoming in the fall. Booking nine to twelve months in advance isn’t too early. According to Gina LaFrieda, manager of St. Louis Carriage Company, couples choose to use horse and carriage rides in a variety of ways depending on their venues. “Often we have the bride and her father arrive at the ceremony in the carriage. After the ceremony the newly married couple departs in the carriage for a romantic ride through a park,” she says. LaFrieda says couples also use the carriage ride to travel from the ceremony to the reception if they are close in proximity. Others use the carriage as their “getaway ride” following the reception. Horse-drawn carriages come in three sizes, offering flexibility for newlyweds. The traditional vis-à-vis carriage holds 4 to 6 people comfortably so you may choose a romantic ride just you and your hubby or have the maid of honor and best man join you. From Wheels to Wagons vehicles they use are actual trolley bodies put on a bus chassis, not a bus made to look like a trolley. They are heated and air conditioned, seat 28 to 32 people, and are designed with either forward-facing seats or perimeter seating. Couples often choose to have the trolley pick up the wedding party at the ceremony site
and drive them to various places to take photos before dropping them off at the reception site. “We encourage them to bring refreshments onboard to enjoy while they ride. Brides are busy all day and sometimes neglect to eat. They may use their time on the trolley to have some snacks, drink a toast, and socialize with the

wedding party. We’ve even had Jimmy John’s deliver to the trolley,” says Burnett. Burnett says couples also use trolleys to transport the wedding party and guests from the hotel to the wedding venues and back again. St. Louis Trolley Company offers a late-night pick up service to take the wedding party or guests from the reception back to the hotel or the church parking lot to retrieve their vehicles. Burnett does her best to accommodate all requests, but booking early is recommended, particularly during the peak months of April, May, and June in the spring and September, October, and November in the fall.
Brides may use their time on the trolley to have some snacks, drink a toast, and socialize with the wedding party. We’ve even had Jimmy John’s deliver to the trolley, says Burnett. WORDS OF WISDOM Transportation vendors advise couples not to delay making reservations. Limousines and party buses are more in demand at certain times of the year, such as during prom in the spring and homecoming in the fall. Booking nine to 12 months in advance isn’t too early. Vendors also caution against choosing your transportation based solely on the price. Safety and service level should be at the top of the list of considerations. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. “We value our 24-7 dispatch, our qualified and experienced drivers, and the level of detail we put into making the itinerary. We are fully certified by the Department of Transportation, our chauffeurs have all the required licensing, and our vehicles are serviced regularly. Safety is key,” says Lauren Hussey, sales manager for Best Transportation. With so many choices, the right transportation is available for you, whether you’re looking for a romantic way to spend some time alone with your hubby or a chance to get the celebration started with your wedding party. Selecting a unique way to travel will provide special memories – not to mention great photos—of your big day. ♥

Making it Legal
Though procuring a wedding license isn’t quite as complicated as the wedding itself, it helps to know the rules. Here they are: 1 All applicants in Missouri and Illinois must receive a license before the ceremony; Saint Louis Bride recommends a minimum of 24 hours. Blood tests are not required in either state. 2 A Missouri license is valid for thirty days from its effective date; an Illinois license for sixty days.
©MILA PHOTOS/SHUTTERSTOCK
3 Both bride and groom must apply in person. In Missouri, you may apply for a license at any office provided the wedding is to take place within the state.
