from the editor SHINE YOUR LIGHT In October, I had the honor of presenting an influencer talk on stage in Idaho for the Unstoppable Influence International Virtual Summit. Originally, I hadn’t even planned to submit an audition. In fact, I missed the original deadline. I’m not going to lie; I had some regret. I mean, it’s 2020, right? Then, almost magically, the deadline was extended. Talk about a nudge. All the other speakers wrote their speeches and had been practicing for several months and there I was unsure of what I was even going to talk about! So, in true Nancy form, I turned on the video camera and just started speaking from the heart – no written speech in sight. Sure, I had numerous flub ups and had to do many retakes but I got it done and hit the submit button. Fast forward a few weeks and I was selected to present. You may be wondering why I’m writing about this and what it has to do with weddings. It didn’t matter how I went about doing my talk. I did what worked Justin and Olivia DeMoss
for me. And, in the end, it didn’t make my message any less important than the others. I went out there, spoke my truth, inspired others and let my light shine. The same goes for weddings. This year has been a doozy for sure. But, let’s remember why you are here reading these words right now. You’re getting married! Sure, you may have to change some things up, but does that make your wedding or love for each other anything less? Heck no! Don’t let the challenges and current obstacles dim your light. Your vendors are creative geniuses – let them do their thing! That speech? I rocked it! The topic? Overcoming the challenges and obstacles true, authentic self! The same goes for you. Be true to yourself. Be bold. Step outside the traditional wedding box and let your light shine!

On top of her successful bridal company based out of St. Louis, she continues to work with top companies such as NBC, Porsche, Food Network, TLC and Fox Business Network where she acted as the lead makeup artist for the television series Strange Inheritance.

1 LIZ SLOAN Liz started L Photographie in 2003 and surrounded herself with a team of three strong, smart, talented female artists. Her career started in photojournalism, and she stays true to her roots focusing on real emotions and moments throughout wedding celebrations. “I never want to create art just to create art. I believe the things we care about and use our time towards should have meaning and impact for ourselves and those who experience them,” says Liz. “I am extremely proud of the work our team produced for this fashion editorial. Rather than just showcasing fashion, it celebrates our feminine strength, individuality and beauty without stigma or constraint. It is, in a word, unapogetic.”
2 KATE KAYES Kate began her photography career in the commercial world, but after photographing the weddings of a few friends, she quickly got hooked on the joy and authentic emotions expressed on wedding days and started shooting weddings full time. Kate met Liz and joined the L Photographie team in 2009. She loves connecting with her clients and their families, and making photographs that will be a beautiful 20
6
reminder of their love for years to come. “This particular shoot is dear to my heart for so many reasons... and celebrates womxn, diversity, confidence, and self love!” Kate says. “I believe strongly that representation matters, and that fashion should be fun and relatable for everyone! It is a powerful thing to open a magazine and see someone who looks like you, and it was amazing to be part of a team working together toward that goal.”
3 SIMCHA LOURIE Simcha has been creating exceptional events and unforgettable memories for more than 15 years. Prior to founding Simcha’s Events in St. Louis, she was the Director of Catering at the five-star Sofitel Chicago Water Tower in downtown Chicago, where she oversaw all social and corporate functions at the hotel. Her awardwinning work has been featured in numerous publications and she helped produce and appeared on a special wedding planning series for KMOV’s “Great Day St. Louis.” Simcha’s unique combination of hospitality industry experience and originality helps create flawless events full of energy, innovative designs and personal touches that

bring her clients’ visions to life. “This series aspires to personify inspiration that lives within oneself. As we’ve been separated this year, physically and emotionally, many people have wrestled with feelings of self-doubt in various ways. We hope you flip through the pages and see yourself reflected in the faces and moments, and that you feel proud of what makes you, you.”
4 JENNIFER RICHMOND Jen started her freelance design career in 2006 and has collaborated with L Photographie and Simcha’s Events on numerous weddings and photoshoots. When she’s not designing ultra- modern brand identities and quirky event stationery, she is busy showing the world how to throw a good party on her entertaining blog, Pretty Together with her partner in crime Liz Sloan. “It was really fun to collaborate with my friends on this shoot,” says Jen. “As soon as Liz and Simcha told me what they were up to, I begged to be a part of it, even if it was just putting it all together in the end. I love the message it sends to women everywhere and think we all deserve a brave and bold outlook for year ahead.”
Deby Sansone’s passion for hair coupled with making people feel their best has been around since she was a little girl. Anchored by a long line of strong minded women in her family, she has made it her life duty to always follow your heart and try to do good. Deby has over eight years experience in the beauty industry and has been fortunate enough to work with countless individuals, unforgettable brides and have her work featured in People Magazine, Real Housewives of Orange County TV show, KSDK Channel 4, and many more. Deby owns a small hair and make up studio in Clayton, MO named after her Mom, grandmother, and great grandmother. Salon Marosie was founded on the idea to bring out inner beauty, all the while shaping hearts and hair. Her career is what gives her purpose and she makes every moment matter with anyone who takes a seat in her chair.
7 TINA HAMBY Makeup has been a part of Tina’s life for as long as she can remember, and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Tina has been a makeup artist for 13 years and is the lead makeup artist at Salon Marosie. “Being a makeup artist gives me a sense of purpose, not only empowering myself but getting to empower others along the way. Art is my first passion, which plays a big role with my clients. Each face is like a new canvas for me, each beautifully unique, enhancing their natural beauty is my goal. This shoot reminded me of the quote by Priyanka Chopra. ‘As a girl, you should not be someone who tries to fit into a glass slipper. You should shatter the glass ceiling.’”

EXPLORING AN ISLAND PARADISE Costa Rica’s best weather is in the dry season, which lasts from December to April, but the low rainy season from August to October has the best surfing – if that’s what you’re into. With year-round temps of 74 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit, there’s really no bad time to visit. It feels incredibly exotic, yet it’s still close to home for Americans. Schellhase says, “Couples are always asking about Costa Rica. It’s a short flight from St. Louis, budget friendly, and there’s no real language barrier. The main language in Costa Rica is Spanish, but English is widely spoken there. Almost Like Being There Livestreaming Your Wedding Gets Everyone in On the Act
Most weddings during the pandemic are, by necessity, more intimate and personal. But with livestreaming, you can retain this intimacy while also including more people than you likely had on your original guestlist. Livestreaming the wedding for guests unable to attend has been a huge conciliation for couples. Rachel Shklar was married in November 2020 (with an original wedding date in May) and knew some family and friends wouldn’t be able to attend. “My grandmother is almost 90, and we have family in New Hampshire, West Virginia and California,” Shklar said. “They didn’t feel comfortable
traveling, so I started looking for ways that they could still be part of our day. Streaming our ceremony live was a great solution.” With gatherings in many places restricted to small numbers and travel bringing with it some risks, livestreaming weddings is quickly gaining popularity. It’s still a new and everchanging option, though, and there are a few things to consider before deciding to go live on your wedding day.
HIRE A PRO If you hire a livestreaming service, they take care of everything and you pretty much just
bring your beautiful self. You only get one shot at getting this livestream right, so enlisting a company with the knowledge, experience and proper equipment is well worth it. “This is not the time to cross your fingers and hope that the cell tower will come through,” said Scotty O’Brien of Visionwork Group and Sunshine Entertainment, a 15-year veteran of livestreaming events. “You want something polished. We meet with clients in person, discuss your wedding day and your expectations, we precheck the venue, the upload speeds and everything required for the day to run smoothly.” (Continued on pg. 156)

F R A K E S In these unprecedented times, most weddings taking place look much different than the celebrations of just a year ago. Some events and traditions surrounding the wedding just can’t happen, or are happening in new ways. But it’s fun to look back on when we could consider all the old-school rituals and gatherings, and even more fun to hear some guys candidly express their opinions about them.
Asking guys to show up to a shower can spark quite a debate, even with assurance that beer would be offered. Rick said: “Showers are the one thing meant for the women. I think my friends would have laughed at me if I would have invited them to a couples’ shower.” Newly married Geoff agrees: “The thought of going to any shower sounds comparable to having to attend the ballet recital of my wife’s second cousin’s six-year-old. Even if there was beer, it would take away from the original point of the thing. I am for keeping meaningful functions just like they are.” Leave the showers to the ladies, thinks Matt. “Most men have to be heavily persuaded to attend a couples’ shower, and most likely don’t really enjoy themselves,” said Matt. But some guys are coming around to the idea of couples’ showers. “I’m more open to this then I was before,” said Brian, who is engaged. “My fiancée described it as just a party with presents. But to me, it’s forcing my friends to come to a formal thing. I don’t like to get all dressed up to open up picture frames and cookie sheets. But if you’re going to do it, skip the games. Guys are definitely not interested in any of that. Provide beer and we’ll find someone to discuss sports with.” Joe and his friends arrived at the end of his fiancée’s shower after a stop at a pub and were happy with that arrangement. “Guys don’t need to be there for the gift opening or for the games. If it resembles more of a party than a shower, I’m good with that,” Joe said. Ryan also emphasizes the party portion of the shower. “It’s a fun way to get together with both the bride’s and the groom’s friends,” Ryan said. “As long as there are not six or (Continued on pg. 128)

I always joke about it and tell people I accidentally turned into my mom because she decorated cakes out of our home. I followed my plan to go to culinary school and I found myself specializing in baking and cake decorating. When I got out of school, I got a job decorating cakes and here I am today. WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL APPROACH TO CAKE DESIGN?
My goal is to create something I know I’ll be proud of and be proud to photograph and post. I want to accommodate everyone’s requests but still have my own style as part of it. WHAT CURRENT TREND IN WEDDING CAKES DO YOU APPRECIATE?
So many. To narrow it down, I really like the fondant marbling, drip cakes, and fault line cakes. I really love that it is trendy to make your cake interesting and unique instead of just traditional and pretty. It’s ok to do fun and expressive. FONDANT OR BUTTERCREAM?
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES PLANNING A WEDDING?
It’s never too early to reach out to your vendors. Even if your wedding is a year away, we book so quickly that earlier is better for us to be able to book your date. Also, I tell brides to focus on what they want for the cake. So often they say that they aren’t sure what their guests will like. I encourage them to do what they like and not worry so much about the guests.

About thirteen years ago we started doing wedding cakes. A bride came into the Shiloh store and asked if we could do a wedding cake. We hadn’t done a wedding cake before but I told her we can do anything that ends with cake! We’ve been doing weddings ever since and not strictly cakes, we can do ice cream sandwiches, sundae bar, even bring the portable stone and serve ice cream. We have a wide variety of dessert options for weddings. Our two stores, South County and Shiloh, are the only stores in St. Louis that do weddings. WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO CAKE DESIGN?
I do both but I enjoy buttercream more. Some details have to be done with fondant and you can’t get around it so I do work with both. I have been experimenting with designs that are typically fondant and using buttercream instead.
We offer a lot of different options and can fit any budget. I spoke with a bride yesterday about her wedding and she decided on a sundae bar. Depending on what they want and their budget, we offer a lot of affordable options.

WHAT CURRENT TREND IN WEDDING CAKES DO YOU APPRECIATE?
Earlier this year we had a bride and groom who wanted a four-tier cake but in place of the secondfrom-the-top tier they wanted a fondant rib cage and heart. I think the couple was in the medical field so it had meaning to them. My co-worker, Mike, did the fondant work and it turned out so cool. It was

definitely the most unique and interesting cake I’ve done and I really liked the way it turned out.

I like the elegant cakes and we are able to achieve that look without it being crazy expensive. When it comes to wedding cake design, I have a book of pictures of cakes we’ve done before. I’ve been doing this for a long time and the trends come and go so we have a wide variety of designs. The majority of

We use buttercream. Fondant is difficult to work with on an ice cream cake. We have done fondant embellishments but primarily we use buttercream. TELL US ABOUT A UNIQUE OR UNUSUAL CAKE REQUEST.
We made an all-black cake with gold decorations. I don’t like to say no to anyone but a black cake is difficult for pictures with the frosting turning the guests’ tongues and teeth black.
Not everyone takes the dance floor, not everyone wants a cocktail, but almost everyone wants dessert. I hope that Cold Stone Creamery is invited to your wedding and we’ll bring the dessert. That’s my tagline!

HOW DID YOU BECOME A CAKE DESIGNER?
My neighbor when I was 12 years old decorated cakes and I loved seeing her work. I asked her to teach me and the rest is history. She was so kind. She invited me over and gave me recipes for icing and two eight-inch cakes. I made the recipes and she taught me how to decorate. I fell in love with it. I had a couple of lessons with her and then I practiced. I made anything and everything I could into a baking project. I still think wedding cakes are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. Thirty years into it and I still love to see the finished product in the space. That is consistently one of the most fulfilling parts of my job. WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL APPROACH TO CAKE DESIGN?
I really want the cake to be what the couple wants – not my vision, but theirs. Even if it isn’t my particular style, the goal is for it to be exactly what they want. And if we aren’t able to do that, I am honest with them. We don’t cover cakes in fondant and some styles don’t work in buttercream. We can do fondant accents to add to the design. The process should be easy. It’s cake! It should be fun and light, not a heavy, taxing decision. WHAT CURRENT TREND IN WEDDING CAKES DO YOU APPRECIATE?
I love the textures that people are using; especially with buttercream you can texture so many different ways. It seems like there are continuously new textures. Using texture as a backdrop for fresh flowers is one of the most beautiful types of wedding cakes. If I was getting married again my cake would have textured vanilla buttercream and tons of real flowers. 106

FONDANT OR BUTTERCREAM?
We cover our cakes in buttercream but we can do fondant or gum paste accents or decorations such as flowers, stipes, or a horizontal ribbon of fondant around the bottom tier. It is easier to paint fondant gold so when we add metallic gold to a cake we usually do that in fondant. It isn’t impossible to do with buttercream, but it seems to work better on fondant. I do love the gold trend. TELL US ABOUT A UNIQUE OR UNUSUAL CAKE REQUEST.
We were working on one of our must unique cakes on Friday. We made a groom’s cake in the shape of the Stanley Cup for Pat Maroon’s wedding. (Maroon is a native of St. Louis who won the Stanley Cup in 2019 with the St. Louis Blues and in 2020 with the Tampa Bay Lightning.) It was beautiful. Our manager, Megan Rois, is the one who does most of our wedding cakes and she did an amazing job. I helped but she is responsible for how amazing it was. Not only was it unique, but it was definitely one of the most challenging designs because it had to be so precise. The dimensions were incredibly important. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES PLANNING A WEDDING?
Take your marriage seriously, but don’t get too caught up in the planning. Certainly, planning is important but if it starts to become more stress than excitement, you need to let some things go. You can’t be obsessive about every detail. Choose the things that are most important and let people you love and trust, or even a wedding planner if possible, take some of the details. I think couples who give their input, allow the professionals to do their thing, and don’t try to micromanage every detail end up enjoying the process a lot more.

My parents really wanted me to go to college but I knew I wanted to be a baker in the pastry industry. After a few years of college, I was
miserable so I went to pastry school instead. I knew I wanted to be a cake designer specifically. I knew it wouldn’t be easy and it took a lot of patience, practice, and hard work but it was also a lot of fun. WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL APPROACH TO CAKE DESIGN?
No matter what the design my main goal is to make something crisp and cleanly executed.
WHAT CURRENT TREND IN WEDDING CAKES DO YOU APPRECIATE?
I’m actually really loving what is happening with cakes right now taking a nod from nature. Cakes using natural elements such as rock textures, flowers, neutral water colors are prevalent right now. Recently I designed a birch wood cake in buttercream with each tier resembling a delicate white birch tree. That wild, natural look appeals to my personal style. FONDANT OR BUTTERCREAM?
I think both are really necessary to do what I do. It just depends on the design. Some things I definitely need to do in buttercream but others you have to do with fondant. TELL US ABOUT A UNIQUE OR UNUSUAL CAKE REQUEST.
When I first was promoted to cake decorator we had a man order a cake with a Shania Twain figurine on a bed. He had one in his freezer but it melted and he wanted to replace it. Recently I designed a red velvet armadillo grooms cake like the one in the movie Steel Magnolias. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES PLANNING A WEDDING?
Before they meet with me, it helps if couples have a general idea of guest count, a vague sense of the design style, and a budget. Right now, I tell couples to have patience. We are dealing with a unique situation with covid and many of the things we’ve held true just aren’t possible. Also, couples should book a designer as soon as possible because vendors may be especially full with both newly engaged couples and those who postponed earlier ceremonies.

Owner, Wedding Wonderland HOW DID YOU BECOME A CAKE DESIGNER?
When I was six years old, Santa brought me an Easy Bake Oven for Christmas and I’ve been baking cakes and decorating them ever since. It was all self-taught. I took art classes, but no formal baking or cake decorating classes. I’m the youngest of six boys. While all five of my brothers where outside playing football, I’d be baking a cake for halftime. They laughed at me a lot then, but they aren’t professional football players and I own a cake shop. WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL APPROACH TO CAKE DESIGN?
It starts with the sale – customer service is everything. I get customers in here for a free tasting and then wow them with great taste and affordable prices. We did have to make some changes due to the pandemic. We now offer cake pops and grab-and-go cakes; we aren’t just a special-order shop anymore. Our biggest hit is the Ooey Gooey St. Louie, a fudge brownie base with gooey butter cake covered in whipped cream and fudge drizzle. We sell out every day. WHAT CURRENT TREND IN WEDDING CAKES DO YOU APPRECIATE?

Last year at the Frontenac Hilton, a bride who had been Miss America wanted her cake to go all the way to the ceiling. The hotel has 11-1/2-foot ceilings. The couple wanted to cut the cake with a real sword. It was fantastic. Incredible. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES PLANNING A WEDDING?
Chill out! Slow down and enjoy every moment. This should be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Don’t stress over every little thing. Nothing is perfect; something won’t go your way. Accept it and have a wonderful day. Also, I like to tell the moms to stay home and let the brides plan their own weddings. ♥ 108

Our mission was to bring more elegant country charm to the rustic wedding in the tradition of Churchill Downs. Inspired by the lush green countryside of Dublin Farms Equestrian Estate, we wanted to show a glorious lakeside setting and romantic decor for the outdoor ceremony. Keeping with the equestrian theme, we were able to include a dramatic carriage entrance for the bride and unique photo opportunities in and around the stables. And the rustic indoor riding arena glowed with elegant chandeliers and lighting.

Some say New York is the city of dreams, but to us, St. Louis is the city of dreams. This group of wedding pros created their own interpretations of Sex in the City meets Gossip Girl in this Vogue inspired shoot that takes place at The Noble, a renovated bank turned event venue and one of the city’s first skyscrapers. The silk slip dress and organza puffed sleeve cape was flown in from á toi studio, a New York based designer and is complemented by Carrie Bradshaw’s signature pink which is highlighted in the textured florals, table scape design, modern stationery, and hand crafted sugar flowers of the couture cake. This elevated editorial included a taxi ride around the city and ended with a pepperoni pizza. A perfect end to any wedding, styled shoot, or day if you ask us.

John’s parents are divorced, but managed to stick to the tradition: “Each parent was looking to help out in their own way, so my mom paid for the food and my dad paid for the liquor. It really didn’t matter who paid for what, but it was nice for us to point out who help us during our thank-you speeches.”
seven showers I’m supposed to attend, I have no problem with them.” Just-engaged Chris echoes Brian’s thoughts. “I haven’t had to go to many of these, but the ones I’ve attended usually aren’t that painful,” Chris said. “As a guy, it is fairly simple to make friends with other guys, especially talking about sports or how good the food is.” He’s also hoping his fiancée isn’t the only one cashing in at the shower. “When we get married, I’d like to have some cool stuff that I won’t necessarily want to buy. I’m not expecting my fiancée to register for them on her own, and I wouldn’t expect to get them in a traditional shower. I don’t care about the font on the monogrammed towels, but I do, however, want a specific grill, the right lawn equipment, and a bunch of other guys’ stuff.” Also aware of the gift-getting opportunities is Brian. “I am a big fan of maximizing the amount of gifts I get and a big fan of parties, especially when they are in my honor,” said Brian. “Couples’ showers are a good time. If it feels like an obligation to attend one, you need to find more entertaining friends.”
ON COMBINED BACHELOR/ BACHELORETTE PARTIES This one was absolutely unanimous, with some guys seemingly offended by the question merely being asked. Joe said: “The rehearsal dinner and the wedding are for everybody [and possibly the aforementioned couples’ shower]. The bachelor and bachelorette parties need to be kept separate.” Brian agrees, and not necessarily because of all the inevitable drunken debauchery. He said, “Although some bachelor parties may involve adult entertainment of some variety, most guys would not consider that an essential ingredient of a fun bachelor party. Most guys just want to ‘dude-out,’ which warrants a separate bachelor party.” Jake is thinking of his friends when he thinks of a good bachelor party, bless his little heart. “Nowadays, the bachelor party isn’t just for the groom, it’s for his friends. Hanging out with your wife and her friends has the potential for serious disaster. I’m not saying go “Hangover” crazy, but there has to be one party for the guys and one for the girls,” Jake said. Rick can speak to that. “I have a friend that told all of his guy friends he was having his bachelor party in Las Vegas. Everyone was excited until they found out it was a joint party with the bride and her friends. Hardly any of his friends ended up going,” said Rick.
ON REHEARSAL DINNERS It is tradition for the groom and his family to foot the bill for the rehearsal dinner. Does that practice still sit well with guys? Overall, yes. “I think it’s nice for the groom and his family to 128

give the bride and her family a night off from arranging, hosting and paying the expenses,” Joe said. Geoff said it’s a good division of duties. “Instead of having everyone trying to help with everything, it’s good to focus and set roles to keep the butting of heads to a minimum. So, I think the groom’s parents should remain responsible as much as possible,” said Geoff. Ryan believes it’s the least the groom and his family can do: “My dad took care of the bill. He wouldn’t have had it any other way. Usually the bride’s parents pay a lot of expenses for the wedding anyway, so I think it should be more of a solo effort by either the groom himself or with the help of his family.” Brian sums it up this way: “If both families can afford it, they might as well go with the conventional method.” On that point, Jake acknowledges: “You can’t tell someone they have to host if they don’t have the resources to do so. It’s important that you and the Mrs. talk about where contributions can come from and how much of the bill you’ll be handling yourself.” Chris feels strongly that he and he alone should pick up the tab: “My fiancée’s family, and friends, my family and friends and our shared friends have been working very hard from the time of the engagement until the end of the reception to make this day perfect. The least I can do is pay for dinner and drinks for everybody.”

ON THE GARTER TOSS The garter toss is a practice that goes back centuries, but is not something included in every modern-day reception. And if this small sampling of guys is any indication, the tradition is one that is becoming almost rare. “We didn’t do it, and honestly didn’t even consider it,” said Geoff. “The guys don’t exactly dive all over the floor, trying to catch it. The only good thing would be if I was in my 20’s and single. Then I may want the single girls at the wedding to know my status.” Brian concedes that the garter toss is tradition and he can go either way on the subject. “But I will say it’s incredibly awkward for most,” Brian said. “Some people drag you out there because you’re single and they’re not and they feel like it’s some sort of requirement for you to do it. Most of us stand there and try not to catch it so we don’t have to hear the constant reminders that we’re not married yet.” Chris said nothing makes him head for the bar faster than the bouquet throw and subsequent garter toss. “It can turn into some sort of burlesque show while ridiculous music is being played,” Chris said. “The groom will fling it and most of the time it lands on the floor because those of us that are forced out there don’t want anything to do with it. That and the ‘you’re single, you better get out there’ comment from every relative is worse than a sharp stick in the eye.” Geoff, Brian and Chris must be going to different weddings than Ryan, who’s up for a little jostling to get the garter, or at least he was in his bachelor days. “I always enjoyed this tradition as a guest and didn’t mind it as the groom,” said Ryan. “It gives guys a chance to be macho and compete. A little shoving around right before its thrown is always fun. It’s a prize, so to speak, if you can beat the other guys and catch it.” Matt feels it’s outdated, but has seen the competitive side of guys emerge when the stakes are raised. “The only saving grace is if you put a cash prize on catching the garter, Matt said. “Seeing drunk people fight for a dainty piece of cloth is well worth $20.” Another twist on the tradition that Matt enjoys: “When the groom is blindfolded and the bride is replaced with a grandmother. That’s pretty funny.” Speaking of Grandma, Jake thinks the whole idea is a little unseemly for mixed company: “Who ever thought that sticking a hand up a

Ryan also thinks that all those watching and participating are uncomfortable: “Most of the time, the groom is thinking: ‘What is my father-in-law thinking right now?’” John’s opinion is a simple one: “Um, no. I prefer to keep my wife’s undergarments to myself.”

ON THE NEXT-DAY BRUNCH AND GIFT-OPENING Brunches the day after the wedding are somewhat common, and may or may not include the couple opening their gifts. Usually the brunches are intimate affairs, with the couple, their immediate families and maybe the wedding party. Sometimes out-of-town guests are also invited. Most of the guys are up for this idea— with some stipulations, of course. Opening gifts the next day appeals to Geoff’s practical side. “It’s nice to open the gifts before the honeymoon because a lot of people give cash and gift cards, and those are lovely things to have before the honeymoon,” said Geoff. Joe and his wife had a brunch at the bride’s family home the next day, just with their immediate families. “It was nice to see everyone the next day and kind of break down what happened,” Joe said. “I could do without opening the gifts then, though.” Brian also sees the benefits of an intimate gathering the next day. “I can’t say I’m too excited to be forced to open presents early the next day, but it’s important,” Brian said. “We’ll be inviting family and the wedding party, if they would like to join. The wedding will probably go by so fast that maybe I won’t have enough time to really chat up some family like I normally would.” Ryan, however, thinks opening the gifts is more of a private thing to do with your spouse or just a few family members. Ryan said, “Who else really wants to be there for that anyway? You might be talking a whole lot of cards and gifts. I wouldn’t want to sit through that.” Matt agrees that if you have a brunch, keep it small. “If you would like to open presents with just your family, I have no problem with that,” said Matt. “I don’t support requiring all the wedding party to attend though. Too many want to get home to catch up with their lives.” Hosting a brunch is the least the couple can do, after the big night celebrated in their honor, said Jake. “It’s not ideal to get up after a late night and be the center of your family’s attention while you open presents,” Jake said. “But it’s a small price to pay for the gifts and your family’s support. When I give a nephew a $300 expresso machine one day, he had better fake it through his hangover to thank me in person!” Chris likens the next-day brunch to the visit to the White House by a championship sports
team. Said Chris, “It’s a nice touch, but totally unnecessary. It’s kind of overkill. We had the rehearsal, the rehearsal dinner, maybe a golf outing or a luncheon, the ceremony, the time between the ceremony and the reception, and finally the reception. Congrats to the bride and groom and all, but it is time to move on with life.” Chris also wonders why the couple would open gifts the next day that are from anyone but immediate family members—especially from people who aren’t at the brunch. “Did somebody wrap fresh fruit in these boxes? What’s the rush?” Ryan just thinks it would be nice to spread out the excitement a little. “It all goes by so fast,” Ryan said. “It would be fun to come home from the honeymoon and look forward to opening the gifts.”
ON HONEYMOON PLANNING Back in the day, it was custom for the groom to plan the honeymoon for he and his bride. Perhaps the thinking was that the bride is planning everything else, and it’s something the groom could take charge of and help lighten her
load. Or that it would be romantic to whisk his bride away to a surprise location. But today’s grooms know better. “The groom could handle the logistics, but the couple should agree on the destination,” Joe said. Brian said planning the trip as a couple is a must in today’s hectic world. “When both the bride and groom have busy work schedules, a vacation is usually a rare and coveted occasion. Both parties should agree on their best option,” he said. Often nowadays, the bride and the groom are both paying for the honeymoon, so even more reason for each to be involved in the planning, said Matt. “Also, this is a good opportunity to start getting used to the art of compromise with your life partner.” Brian seconds that: “One or the other can take the lead but you have to involve the other person,” said Brian. “My fiancé wants a good beach. I’m Irish and pale so I couldn’t care less about a beach but I want top-shelf liquor. Finding a place that fits both of our wants, in our budget, is a good way to start a marriage.” Aww, you softie. ♥

Our mission was to bring more elegant country charm to the rustic wedding in the tradition of Churchill Downs. Inspired by the lush green countryside of Dublin Farms Equestrian Estate, we wanted to show a glorious lakeside setting and romantic decor for the outdoor ceremony. Keeping with the equestrian theme, we were able to include a dramatic carriage entrance for the bride and unique photo opportunities in and around the stables. And the rustic indoor riding arena glowed with elegant chandeliers and lighting.

The biggest difference between a professionally livestreamed event and doing it yourself is the quality of the sound. “Sounds capture isn’t as easy as you might think,” said Jeremy Minnerick at Livestream Love StL. “Hiring a professional gives you audio as high in quality as in a real film.” Usually, the celebrant and the groom are fitted with microphones, and many couples choose just one camera for their livestream. But livestreaming companies can provide multiple cameras if you would like more than one angle. In addition to much better sound, there are other elements of livestreaming we novices would probably never think about. “We handle all the details: set up the cameras at the best angles and we have a producer for the video,” said Josh Horn of Professional Production Enterprises (PPE). “We can mute audio if we need to mute licensed music and can replace it with music we have, so there’s less risk of your livestream being taken down.” PPE livestreams on YouTube, so it can be viewed live and after the wedding, whenever you want to relive the big day. They can also edit it afterwards to put an even cleaner version back on YouTube.
TALK WITH YOUR TEAM Talk to the people at your venue to see if they are already set up for livestream and to check on their high-speed internet connection. Also let the celebrant know you will be livestreaming the wedding, as well as notifying any singers, musicians, DJs, and in-person guests. Also, tell your in-person guests at what time the livestream will begin. Angela Marie Rocchio is a soprano soloist in St. Louis and has learned a great deal since she began singing at livestreamed weddings and celebrations. Her first time, she rehearsed a complicated piece and sang her heart out. It sounded beautiful to all that were present, but when she watched her performance at home on video, there was nothing. No sound. She realized that by stepping away from the microphone and relying on the acoustics of the room, the crew couldn’t capture and broadcast her singing. “Now, all my music planning packages include a consult with the couple, the livestream operator and the videographer, if there is one. About half of the weddings that I sing for now are livestreamed, and with planning and communication, have all gone very well,” Rocchio said.
REHEARSE AND TROUBLESHOOT It’s important to do a run-through on the day of the wedding, to determine where the camera(s) will be and check the audiovisual equipment. “Even the pros sometimes need to make minor adjustments once we are on-site,” said Minnerick. “The potential for problems and our 156

ability to troubleshoot is another big reason to hire a livestreaming company.” Rocchio agrees that just like you have a rehearsal for your ceremony, you need to have a practice run of the livestream, both the sound and the camera. “I recently saw a livestream ceremony at which an amateur cameraman was not practiced at focusing the lens,” Rocchio said. “Unfortunately, the picture was so blurry that I couldn’t even see the bride’s face as she came down the aisle.”

INTERACT WITH YOUR VIRTUAL GUESTS There are many ways for your virtual guests to contribute to the day, in addition to watching it. Newlywed Rachel had a “virtual guest book” where guests watching the livestream commented during the ceremony and some send photos of themselves as they watched, and noted where they were viewing from. “It was fun to look back at the guest book after the wedding and see who tuned in and to read their sweet comments,” said Rachel. “They were really happy to be able to still be a part of it.” Some guests like to dress up as if they were there, or make an impressive display of food and send photos of their efforts. “But we enjoyed
