Beyond Atlanta's City Limits Summertime and a visit to the Decatur, just east of Downtown Atlanta, were made for each other. Blame the tropical drinks at S.O.S. Tiki Bar, or the free-spirited shops and breezy arrival by MARTA (a rail station is located directly below the square). The city's charm and quirky character will have you relaxing your shoulders in no time. 90 MINUTES IN: Stroll the blocks around the square to work up an appetite before snagging a table at one of the many alfresco spots. I could spend an entire laid-back afternoon tucked away in the backyard of No. 246, under a red umbrella at Leon’s Full Service or socializing at Kevin Gillespie’s Communion Cantina. If storm clouds start brewing, no need to fret. Check the line-up at Eddie’s Attic, a local institution

The City of Decatur dating back to 1992. This cozy listening room supports upand-coming musicians, but discourages chatting during tunes – meaning rolling thunder accompanies the acoustics. For young families, head to Little Shop of Stories or take a short drive to Fernbank Museum of Natural History. Wherever you wander, watch out for the 32 fairy-sized Secret Doors by local artists hidden in nooks and crannies.

Kiki McCoy

Atlanta Marriott Buckhead Hotel and Conference Center

Q: Where’s the best place in Buckhead for back-to-school shopping? A: I think the place to shop in Buckhead is Lenox Mall, they have back-to-school sales for parents and teens at stores such as Macy's, Foot Locker, Gap, J. Crew, American Eagle and Urban Outfitters. Q: For many family travelers this may be the last vacation of the summer for them. What’s the best way to go out with a bang? A: My top three attractions for family travelers are: Georgia Aquarium, World of CocaCola and Stone Mountain. Q: One great way to stay cool is with some beer tastings at a local brewery. Which brewery is your favorite? A: SweetWater Brewery in Midtown is my favorite. The tour is amazing and they have a great selection with a generous pour. Q: What’s a great outdoor activity that traveling fitness enthusiasts can enjoy? A: A great outdoor activity is the Atlanta BeltLine which you can walk, bike ride, jog and enjoy art and treats along the way. For something more intense, take a free class every Saturday at noon at Piedmont Park with Mr. Cruver called 'The Hills Atl.' His workout plan consists of interval training, running up hills and a variation of exercises in between. His Instagram accounts are @caspercruv and @capt.boom.

where now Atlanta

The savvy traveler’s guide to exploring the ATL ON THE SCENE

Power Trip Atlanta’s sprawling metropolis can’t be covered by bike – or so says conventional wisdom. A maverick movement, however, is gaining momentum. There’s never been a better time to explore freely thanks to a growing number of greenways. Or, opt to go farther, faster on e-bikes. Ready to roll?

Take a joy ride for yourself at EDISON’s Kirkwood headquarters or at their pop-up shop in Ponce City Market’s Citizen Supply.

For more information wheretraveler.com

Q&A with Ryan Hersh The city is infamous for its traffic (“Baby Driver,” anyone?), but the creator of EDISON Electric Bike Co. is blazing a new trail. He slows down to chat speed and Southern hospitality. Q: What makes an EDISON bicycle unique? Integration. All electric bikes have three components that make them “electric”: battery, motor and controller. What really makes EDISON special is that we started with those components and built an amazing bike around them. The result is a sleek, polished and unassuming electric bike. Another point of note is that EDISON is assembled with love, right here in the ATL! Q: How does pedaling on an EDISON compare to a traditional bike? Empowering! You have to try one! You get all of the joys of riding a traditional bicycle, but EDISON gives you the freedom to go farther and the power to get there faster. A recent EDISON customer best said it: “It makes Atlanta as flat as a pancake!” Riding an EDISON is the exercise equivalent to a brisk walk. Q: Where is your favorite place to ride in Atlanta? I love my city. It’s hard to pick just one place. Making use of [PATH Trails] and BeltLine networks is incredible. I can get from my home in Kirkwood to Ponce City Market in minutes. A few more minutes on the BeltLine and 10th Street, and I’m on the Westside – trips that would otherwise take forever by car. Q: Are there places that e-bike riders should avoid? Nope! EDISON’s purpose is to go where others can’t. They’re also great for covering the first/last mile when using MARTA.

Q: What is a common misconception about e-bikes? I frequently get asked the question, “Why would I want a bike that I don’t have to pedal?” It’s simple. We’re selling transportation. I contend that these bikes are the fastest way to move about our great city. Our primary target market isn’t current bike commuters – it’s all the car-caged folks that would adopt an alternative, provided it’s convenient and affordable. Atlanta is doing an excellent job in making biking and bike safety a priority. We’re investing heavily in bike/pedestrian infrastructure, but we’re not making Atlanta any flatter. EDISON removes the final hurdle! Q: How far can an EDISON go? 20 to 30 miles on a single charge. Charging takes 4 hours on a standard wall outlet and costs a dime in electricity. Q: How did you choose the company’s name? There’s a Thomas Edison Foundation that prohibits me from answering this question honestly. Q: How do you imagine our city in 10 years? We’re doing a lot right, which is reflected in our matchless population growth. Regarding transport, previous generations developed an infrastructure that was all about getting people in/ out of the city. I see a bright future [that prioritizes] Atlanta’s inhabitants while likely de-incentivizing car commuting. Communities will be more dense and rich with diversity, culture and Southern hospitality. I’m honored to be a part of it!

Piedmont Park

EASTSIDE TRAIL This paved multi-use trail is the first finished section of the Atlanta BeltLine, a progressive redevelopment project that follows a 22-mile loop of old rail corridor. The Eastside portion connects popular neighborhoods like Midtown, Virginia Highland, PonceyHighland, Inman Park and the Old Fourth Ward, with plenty of public art and linear greenspace along the way. 404.477.3003. www.beltline.org

PATH 400 Running adjacent to Atlanta's northern artery for traffic flow, PATH 400 is a planned 5.2-mile greenway that begins in the heart of Buckhead. The long-term goal is to join PATH 400 to the BeltLine as well as trails in Sandy Springs and north Fulton County, providing a key link in the region's trail network. So far, the first mile has been completed and is open to walkers, joggers, bike riders and pet lovers. Mile Zero is accessible on Piedmont Road

at Adina Drive, and free, on-street public parking is available. Access points are also located on Lenox Road, Old Ivy Road and Wieuca Road where each crosses Georgia State Route 400. 404.842.2680. www.path400greenway.org

PIEDMONT PARK With more than 200 acres to get you moving, Piedmont Park is rich in greenspace and history. In 1909, the city enlisted Olmsted Brothers, the pre-eminent landscape architects of the time, (and sons of Frederick Law Olmsted), to transform decaying fairgrounds. Their master plan is still in place today, with Midtown’s skyline rising above the Dogwood trees.

Visitors can enter from the 12th or 14th Street gates off Piedmont Avenue, or the Charles Allen Gate off of 10th Street. A popular way to arrive at the park is via the BeltLine’s Eastside Trail at the intersection of 10th Street and Monroe Drive. Hop off your bike for the many free events hosted here, from yoga classes to concerts to "Cocktails and Converastion" evenings hosted by the Piedmont Park Conservancy. On Saturday mornings from March to midDecember, don't miss the Green Market's local produce, baked goods, prepared foods, live music, chef's demonstrations and much more. 214.526.8181. www. piedmontpark.org Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail

[WHERE INSIDE]

Atlanta Your Way

Budget

Global

Luxury

Ever meditated in the midst of a bustling city? At (1) Woodruff Park , find peace of mind (and your wallet) with free meditation classes by the Water Wall on Tuesdays at 12 pm and Vinyasa yoga classes on Saturdays at 9 am. When your stomach growls, it's hard to beat the bites at (2) Victory Sandwich Bar. Everything on the menu is under $10 and super tasty, from the pimento cheese jar with bacon jam to the boozy Coke slushie. Talk about bang for your buck. Bonus: old movies play on the wall and a game of Ping-Pong is encouraged. To toast the day, experience Atlanta's burgeoning brewery scene. (3) Sweetwater Brewing Co. has been a local favorite for 20 years and counting. Tours are $12 (for ages 21+) and include sampling 36 ounces of their lip-smacking year-round and seasonal suds.

Quench your thirst at (1) World of Coca-Cola, where your tastebuds can try more than 100 international beverages made by The Coca-Cola Company. Five tasting stations are arranged geographically from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America. Next, keep cool with an afternoon at (2) Museum of Design Atlanta. On display through Sept. 4 is "Luba Lukova: Designing Justice," an exhibit of thought-provoking posters Lukova hopes will catalyze action for a better world. Catching a flight at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport? Forgo takeout fare for the eclectic provisions at (3) One Flew South in Concourse E. The ingredients in their proper cocktails and sushi menu are sourced from regional farmers and purveyors. You braved the world's busiest airport; you earned it.

If glitz and glam is your thing, head straight to Buckhead, the city's center for all things luxe. First stop: (1) Venetian Nail Spa. The toptier salon brand opened their first Georgia location on East Paces Ferry Road earlier this summer. Services extends far beyond your average mani and pedi; browse the menu of offerings from waxing to skin care to massages. While you're in the 'hood, stroll by the sophisticated (2) The Shops Buckhead Atlanta. With outposts from fashion icons like Dior, Tom Ford, Jimmy Choo and many more, the perfect bag, baubles and haute couture are all accounted for here. End on a high note with reservations to dine across Peachtree Street at (3) St. Regis Atlanta's The Tavern of Atlas. Chef-driven dishes and art-filled walls combine for an unparalleled experience.
