Essential Atlanta You may have heard the moniker "City in the Forest," but to see it for yourself, spend some time in Piedmont Park. With nearly 200 acres to explore, the park is rich in both green space and history. Take a stroll any given Saturday and try to imagine a time before a skyline peeked above the Dogwood trees and Midtown wasn't bustling. 90 MINUTES IN: From a forest to farmland to fairgrounds, Piedmont Park has endured while the city has exploded around it. In 1909, Atlanta enlisted the Olmsted Brothers—the preeminent landscape architects of the time and sons of Frederick Law Olmsted—to transform the land into how we know it today. Meanwhile, the crowds have just gotten bigger. On Sept. 16 and 17, the urban oasis hosts Music Midtown
Piedmont Park (MM) – an Atlanta tradition since 1994, although 2017's fest marks only the seventh in Piedmont Park. With four stages and 34 diverse performing acts, including headlining artists like Bruno Mars, Mumford & Sons, blink-182 and Future, MM has become one of the buzziest weekends of the year. (Bonus: $1 of every ticket purchased benefits the park.) For peace and quiet, however, try visiting during the week.

Ask the Expert YOUR CONCIERGE
Cheryl McLaughlin
Chief Concierge, Omni Atlanta Hotel at CNN Center Q: Some guests are looking to do something a little out of the box in Atlanta. What do you recommend? A: There are several Escape the Room games in the city. I would also recommend Agatha's mystery theatre. Q: Atlanta is becoming its own version of Hollywood. What’s your favorite spot in the city that has some limelight attached to it? A: ‘Baby Driver’ and ‘The Fast and The Furious’ movies were filmed in the historic district Downtown. There were many days that those streets were blocked off for filming. Q: Best restaurant Downtown for seafood lovers? A: Prime Meridian here at the Omni has the best crab cakes and delicious scallops and salmon. McCormick & Schmick's is another popular one. I hear they have an amazing happy hour. Q: Dragon Con is an Atlanta tradition that takes over the streets of Downtown every September. As a hotel that’s in the heart of all the action, what’s your favorite thing about Dragon Con? A: The costumes. There's so much diversity from funny to scary. The parade really showcases the creativity that goes into so many of these costumes. You'll take so many pictures you end up with no storage space left on your phone.

GAME-X Across the street from the Georgia Aquarium and Centennial Olympic Park, Game-X tests the limits of fun. Inside the two-level arcade awaits 60-plus high-tech games, pub grub and a full bar. Then, let your inner kid loose. 275 Baker St., 404.525.0728 ORMSBY’S Tucked below Westside Provisions District, the exterior keeps a low profile. Inside, this cozy gathering spot exudes high times. This celebration of literature, comics, film, television, art, music and gaming has exploded since the first con in 1987. Dragon Con 2017 Membership: This is your access pass to attend all days of the convention, including performers, vendors and a comic and pop artist alley. Stan Lee, creator of some of the best-known comic book superheroes, and Lena Headey, the icy Lannister queen from HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” lead a long list of celebrity guests from “Star Trek”, “Star Wars”, “Firefly”, “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Dr. Who.” Can’t make it for all four days? Not Another Barbecue Joint Housed in what looks like an old gas station’s mini mart, one could easily miss Heirloom Market if it wasn’t for the steady line of patrons out the door at lunchtime. Luckily, the line moves quickly, as guests order at the counter and the kitchen churns out plates of spicy grilled meats topped with kimchi, pickled vegetables and an array of side dishes. Not your average Southern barbecue joint, Heirloom Market is operated by two classically trained chefs, Jiyeon Lee and Cody Taylor. Drawing on Taylor’s roots in Texas and Tennessee as well as Lee’s South Korean hertiage, the couple infuses familiar flavors with “Seoul” style. Still, that’s not Lee’s only claim to fame. A former K-pop star, Lee has recently started singing gigs again and is working on a greatest hits album (stay tuned). So, what makes this place’s unique recipe work so well? According to Lee, it’s the love she and Taylor share for food, for each other and their dog, Sela. “We are very different inside and outside! We learned from each other’s culture and personality,” she said. Well, maybe that and a side of Mac. 2243 Akers Mill Road SE, 770.612.2502. www.heirloommarketbbq.com
The Royal Treatment This month marks the second anniversary of Bar Margot’s debut within the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta, yet the unique tion of quality that accompanies the esteemed hotel, but few may expect its onsite dining to be this...hip. (On weekends, a DJ spins tunes from a library of nearly 10,000 vinyls from 9 pm until midnight.) Loosely based on a character from Wes Anderson’s 2001 cult-classic “The Royal Tennebaums,” fans of the film can delight in the clever allusions to the restaurant’s rebellious, namesake character in the design and on the menu. Still, guests don’t need to be familiar with the film to indulge. In fact, both the newly appointed Executive Chef Michael Patria and Pastry Chef Lasheeda Perry equally find inspiration in Atlanta’s essence, like The Gold Standard, which must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance.
The Gold Standard is chocolate cake infused with Coca-Cola and topped with a 24-karat gold leaf accent, hand-painted gold luster dust and edible gold pearls. Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta, 75 Fourteenth St. NE, 404.881.5913. www.barmargotatl.com 10 W H E R E AT L A N TA I S E P T E M B E R 2 017
Bon Ton Boil House
An Extended Vacation, Please Inspired by Chef Hieu Pham’s Crawfish Shack Seafood, Big Citizen Partners Darren Carr and Eric Simpkins brought a little piece of Buford Highway to Midtown earlier this year. Bon Ton Boil House has since made a big splash for its eclectic interiors, Vietnamese-Creole menu and cheeky cocktails. Paying homage to New Orleans, big indulgence is encouraged. Take a seat on the furry pink banquet and saddle up to charbroiled oysters with XO boil sauce, Lo Lat Rolls and Boiling Pt. Peanuts – and that’s just to start. Wash it all down with an “Extended Vacation” (banana-infused vermouth, agricole rhum, mint, sage, honey, lemon, pineapple absinthe) or the refreshing Frozen Vietnamese Irish Coffee. The kitchen stays open late to keep the revelry and “fancy service”—as the neon sign on the wall touts—alive. 674 Myrtle St., 404.996.6161. www.bontonatl.com

Blue Jean Baby An American icon known for classic silhouettes and their trademark blue jeans, Levi’s has invented and reinvented style. In line with this heritage, the brand’s retail location at Alpharetta’s Avalon is a cut above others. Here, trained tailors can turn your favorite pair of jeans or go-to jacket into a one-of-a-kind piece with embroidery, script and custom patches. Choose your color thread for monogramming, or maybe add some Georgia pride with a peach or professional sports team logo to rep your team all season long. Originality counts. Atlanta Your Way
Pet Lovers
Movie Fanatics
What a time to be alive. (1) City Winery, the unique music venue and fully functioning winery adjacent to Ponce City Market, offers a Canine Cuisine menu complete with Pooched Eggs and Muff Loaf. While you sip your varietal of choice, your pup can lap up non-alcoholic Apollo Peak Pet Wines. Inman Park's (2) Hampton+Hudson is also hip to the four-legged crowd. During their monthly Doggie Mingle, treat your furry pal to chefmade treats on the patio while supporting local nonprofit, Doggies on the Catwalk. Perhaps no one pampers pets more than the Loews Atlanta Hotel or (3) Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta. The latter welcomes each with a cozy bed, bowl, doggie dental kit, organic bone and toys, while in-room dining and pet turndown services are available upon request.
Welcome to the Hollywood of the South! Let (1) Atlanta Movie Tours show you the impact of the local film industry firsthand. Opt for a luxury coach or walking tour to chase zombies, scout Marvel superheroes or step back in time with their Atlanta Heritage Tour. Speaking of history, a stop at (2) The Fox Theatre is a must for classic movie fans. Behind-the-scenes tours are held Monday, Thursday and Saturday, however a lucky few can get an extended look on Sept. 3 before the final screening of the Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival. Dreaming of seeing your name up on the marquee one day? Head over to (3) Catapult Acting Studios' new state-of-theart, 3,000-square-foot studio in Brookhaven. Classes are held seven days a week and taught by highly respected names in the biz.

Unique If you crave all things weird and wacky, the (1) Doll's Head Trail should be top of your list. A
short drive from East Atlanta Village, this easy hike is ever-evolving with whimsical displays of found-object artwork. Tucked within Constitution Lakes Park's nature preserve, Atlanta feels worlds away. Next, have your camera handy to hunt down (2) Tiny Doors ATL. A local favorite, these 6-inch-tall doors are whimsically placed on walls, columns and bridges throughout the city to incite curiosity. Keep your eyes peeled for Doors 2 and 6 along the Atlanta BeltLine's Eastside Trail. Then, cool off at (3) The Lawerence in Midtown. Inspired by summer road trips, Bar Manager Taylor Blackgrave's current list of themed cocktails charts a course of its own. Our favorite sip? It's a tie for the “Area 151” and “Evans City Zombie.”
