Dracula

shake & stir theatre co presents Bram Stoker’s gothic masterpiece “Dracula”. Created and adapted by one of Australia’s leading contemporary theatre companies, this gripping version of the 1897 horror classic is every bit as tortured and charismatic as the novel. When young lawyer Jonathan Harker visits Castle Dracula deep within the Carpathian Mountains, he is not expecting the strange hospitality he receives from his mysterious host. What unfolds is thrilling, dark and brilliantly executed theatre. 8–9 August, The Arts Theatre, The Arts Centre Gold Coast. 135 Bundall Road, Surfers Paradise. 5588 4000. theartscentregc.com.au

Drawn from the MCA Collection, “Primavera at 25” brings together established and emerging artists working across a range of disciplines from painting, sculpture, video, performance, kinetic and installation art. Main Beach BY JANE HODGES

Marina Mirage at Main Beach. Photo: Gold Coast Tourism.

JUST NORTH of the busy throng of Surfers Paradise, you’ll find Main Beach—a relaxed mix of cafés, restaurants, bars, resort shopping and a choice of calm or surf beaches. It’s also home to Marina Mirage and Mariners Cove Marina—the jumping off points for all manner of water-based tours.

THINGS TO DO Main Beach beaches are a lot less crowded than Surfers Paradise’s iconic stretches of sand. For calm protected beach swimming head for the inside beaches of The Spit— a permanent sand spit that separates the mainland and Southport Broadwater from the Pacific Ocean. On the other side of The Spit are lifesaver patrolled surf beaches with flagged swimming areas—the Seaway Beach (patrolled November to April), Sea World Beach (patrolled on weekends and school holidays) and Sheraton Beach and Main Beach (both patrolled all year round). You can walk, run or ride along the Gold Coast Oceanway, a 36-kilometre network of coastal pathways stretching from the Gold Coast Seaway (The Spit) to the Point Danger Lighthouse (Coolangatta). Enjoy a family day at Sea World— one of Main Beach’s top attractions. It’s the perfect day out with dolphin and

seal shows as well as the chance to see sharks, stingrays, penguins and polar bears. The Storm Rollercoaster, an interactive dinosaur display and an acrobatic ski show will keep everyone happy! There’s so much to do on the water— go whale watching (humpbacks cruise past from June to October) with Gold Coast Whale Adventures; do a fourwheel-drive buggy and Segway tour of South Stradbroke Island; sail, jet ski, jet board or stand-up paddleboard on the Broadwater, take a thrill ride with Paradise Jetboating or see it all from the skies with a helicopter ride over the highrise skyline, the coast and islands with Gold Coast Helitours—all leave from Mariners Cove Marina. You can even learn to surf at The Spit with Get Wet Surf School. WHERE TO EAT You can mix it with the locals and experience some of the coast’s best bars and dining on Tedder Avenue. When your watch says cocktail o’clock, start with a Jalapeno Margarita or a local Burleigh Brewing Co beer at Bistro Chico. Settle in for some share plates from chef Darren Baranello’s Mediterranean, Asian and Middle Eastern-inspired menu, or wander down the Avenue to Shuck for some

serious people watching and some of the Coast’s freshest seafood—the sand crab lasagne is sensational! For wonderful water views, join the locals for a sunset drink at Southport Yacht Club. Get a table overlooking the moored yachts and as the sun fades you’ll see the lights of the Gold Coast twinkling over the water. The meals are great too! For casual fish and chips or fresh caught local prawns and crabs, head to Peter’s Fish Market. Outside tables overlook the fishing fleet or find a spot across the road on Main Beach. Right next door is Palazzo Versace Hotel—offering high tea at Le Jardin, casual waterfront dining at Vie Bar & Restaurant or a gastronomic adventure to remember at Vanitas. Glass Dining & Lounge Bar is known for its succulent steaks; Omeros Bros for supreme seafood in stylish surrounds; and Ristorante Fellini for the finest Italian fare. The best bets for breakfast are Providore Marina Mirage or local favourite Lark Café and Grocer on Main Beach Parade. WHERE TO SHOP High-end centre Marina Mirage offers more than 80 speciality stores (fashion, art and design, homewares and even a pooch boutique). Visit Mariora for unique jewellery featuring Australian Opals. For designer shoes, bags and accessories you can’t go past Maryon’s on Tedder Avenue. They stock international designer labels including Emilio Pucci, Kenzo, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Marni, Nicholas Kirkwood and Sonia Rykiel. GETTING AROUND Travel around the area via the G:link, the Gold Coast’s easy to use light rail network. It runs frequently between the northern Gold Coast University Hospital station via Southport, Main Beach and Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach near Pacific Fair Shopping Centre at its southern-most point. THE COOLEST END OF THE GOLD COAST

BY KERRY HEANEY

HOME TO SOME OF the Gold Coast’s most famous surfing spots, relaxed Coolangatta is lined with white sand beaches flanked by tall Norfolk pines. It was named after the schooner Coolangatta, wrecked there in 1846, and is the most southern suburb of City of Gold Coast sharing the border with New South Wales. For some of the Gold Coast’s best surfing conditions, head to Kirra Beach, Snapper Rocks or Rainbow Bay, but you might also want to try throwing in a line to catch snapper, bream or tailor. There’s also plenty of whale watching opportunities from the heights of Point Danger.

With all that sand activity you will work up an appetite. You won’t have to leave the water views to enjoy a feed if you claim a spot on the huge beachfront balcony of the Coolangatta Surf Club. It’s a great spot for whale and dolphin watching and also perfect for a weekend breakfast. The restaurant features local produce with a range of steaks, seafood and salads. Finish your meal with authentic Italian gelato and enjoy their free Wi-Fi. The club was awarded Best Dining in Queensland at the Clubs Queensland Awards for Excellence 2016. GREEN BEHIND THE GOLD

Inland from the towering skyscrapers and world-famous surfing beaches is a tranquil wonderland of rainforests, waterfalls and charming small villages. By Danielle Lancaster. Photo: Gold Coast Tourism.

WELCOME TO TAMBORINE Mountain, home to Queensland’s oldest national park and the third oldest in the world. In less than an hour from the Gold Coast’s surf and sand you can be in the midst of one of the area’s hinterland gems. Tamborine Mountain, rising over 500 metres, is the first hill behind the Gold Coast, giving it the ‘Green behind the Gold’ status. This is the most northern section of the great volcanic caldera of Mt Warning and forms part of ‘Australia’s Green Cauldron’, an Australian National Landscape of Significance. Tamborine Mountain National Park consists of different sections. The Witches Falls Section, with its grassy picnic areas surrounded by a natural greenhouse, was

the first section declared in 1908. Since then 13 sections have been added. There’s Joalah, Cedar Creek, The Knoll, Palm Gove and MacDonald to name a few. For a wheel chair/pram friendly walk consider Esme Street Environmental Park—a community rainforest maintained area. The short Curtis Falls walk in the Joalah Section of the national park is easy and if you can only fit in one walk, choose this one. At Hang Gliders Lookout the panorama spans across the Border Ranges, valleys and to neighbouring mountains such as Lamington. If the wind is right, keen hang gliders will be preparing and running off the grassy ledge for their descent on the thermals into the Scenic Rim below. If you’re brave you too can soar like a bird doing a tandem jump with South East

Queensland Hanggliding. It’s also the perfect location to watch the sunset. The Gold Coast’s hinterland is recognised as one of the most biodiverse regions in Australia. Its subtropical rainforests harbour a huge number of rare and endangered animals and plants. Over 170 species of birds have been recorded, and numerous frogs, insects, reptiles and intriguing fungi can be seen by those with an eager eye. Today’s visitors can experience not only natural but also man-made treasures. There are award-winning restaurants, artisan’s studios, shopping for antiques and knick-knacks at quaint outlets and quirky mountain markets. Plus roadside stalls, wineries, distilleries and local events. Gallery Walk is the tourist hub of

LES CLEFS D’OR GOLD COAST Photo: Destination Gold Coast.

LES CLEFS D’OR By Shane Edwards CHEF CONCIERGE, SOFITEL GOLD COAST BROADBEACH LAST MONTH THE MEMBERS of Les Clefs d’Or Australia along with the Executive of Les Clefs d’Or New Zealand attended our Annual General Meeting in Brisbane. With over 50 members throughout Australia, it was a great opportunity to catch up, renew old friendships and make new ones. This year saw the inaugural “Meet the Region” tourism expo be introduced. Over 30 exhibitors showcased the best of South East Queensland, and gathered afterwards for a welcome cocktail party. The first day of the AGM was strictly business, with various reports tabled from members of the Executive Committee, as well as the Ball, Charity, Interview, Ethics and other various Committees, and a briefing from the Oceanic Vice President. At the conclusion of the AGM the Les Clefs d’Or hospitality Charity Ball was held, for the second year, at the Sofitel Brisbane Central. Our theme this year was “California Dreaming”, and over 250 guests enjoyed the event immensely.

Shane Edwards.

The Queensland members would like to acknowledge our great supporters and sponsors, because without them we would not be able to put on such a charity event enabling us to provide funds for the Queensland section’s charity, The White Cloud Foundation. With the help of the raffle ticket sellers, we were able to raise $6,070—a really great effort! The White Cloud Foundation believes in better access to early intervention for the treatment and prevention of depression in Australia. Their mission is to create opportunities for people living with, or at risk of, depression to reconnect with their lives, enhance their recovery and regenerate themselves, with the support of their families and carers. Their vision is to create a multidisciplinary clinic in each Australian capital city, to increase access to early intervention treatment for depression and anxiety. We hope to raise as much money as we can to help such a wonderful charity.
