In an Australian exclusive, “Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum” has opened at Queensland Museum as part of an international touring exhibition. The exhibition features more than 110 original artefacts including pieces of the Colosseum, authentic elaborately decorated bronze gladiator helmets and original arms and armour preserved in the ashes of Pompeii. In this very rare and unique opportunity visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the everyday lives of Ancient Roman Gladiators with interactive games and displays that reveal who gladiators were, where they lived and how they trained. Mozart Airborne Voices and bodies take flight in this stunning premiere production celebrating the beauty and complexity of some of Mozart’s most sublime arias and ensembles, including music from some of his most famous operas, “Don Giovanni”, “Così fan tutte” and “The Marriage of Figaro”. Bennelong Bangarra Dance Theatre returns to Brisbane with its latest work, “Bennelong”, a poignant tribute to one of the most mythologised and celebrated individuals from the days of First Contact. Created by acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre Artistic Director Stephen Page, “Bennelong” unravels the story of the first Aboriginal statesman, Woollarawarre Bennelong, a senior man of the Eora and namesake of Bennelong Point, where the Sydney Opera House now stands. Bennelong was the first Aboriginal man to visit Europe and return, and one of the earliest to have his life story recorded and documented through the early diaries of the British military. With extraordinary curiosity, courage and diplomacy, Bennelong led his community to survive a clash of cultures, contributing to the establishment of positive relationships between the Eora and the British.

THE ROYAL QUEENSLAND SHOW (EKKA) is delighted to be celebrating

an important milestone this year—its 140th anniversary. Since the very first show in 1876 more than 30 million people have passed through the gates to celebrate the country coming to the city, making family traditions and childhood memories to pass down through generations. The Ekka will run from 11 to 20 August in the heart of Brisbane city at the Brisbane Showgrounds. The Ekka is Queensland’s largest event attracting around 400,000 visitors each year. The Ekka has a remarkable history, being staged every year except for just two—in 1919 due to the Spanish Flu epidemic and in 1942 when the grounds were used as a World War II staging depot.

RNA Chief Executive Brendan Christou said the Ekka is the people’s show and this year the Ekka was giving back to the people who have made the show what it is today. “For the very first time a Twilight Ticket is on offer, meaning people can enter the Ekka from 6pm for just $16 —half the price of an adult ticket—for three hours of family fun. “As the sun sets they’ll enjoy the new early children’s fireworks show inspired by the colours of the Great Barrier Reef at 6pm, the spectacular world-class night show EkkaNITES and premier food precincts Gourmet Plaza, Woolworths Fresh Food Pavilion and the awardwinning Royal Queensland Steakhouse, which will all stay open longer until 9pm. “We’re also bringing back the Community Stage after a two-year

THINGS TO DO South Bank is well known for its swimming lagoon Streets Beach (reopens in September), but there are plenty of alternative activities for those who prefer to stay dry. The Gallery of Modern Art, or GOMA as it is affectionately known, has an international reputation for hosting exhibitions that are the envy of other galleries with the likes of Picasso, Matisse and Warhol drawing record crowds. Culture aficionados can also explore the more traditional Queensland Art Gallery or the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre which continues to evolve with the addition of high tech installations. The latter is a big hit with kids of all ages. Across the road at South Bank Parklands you can take to the sky on The Wheel of Brisbane, a giant observation wheel which takes you high above the city. AT 287 METRES above sea level,

Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean. Reach Brisbane Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant.

The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a

military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 56 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake. As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

■ At the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting we saw the return of the Concierge and Hospitality Ball to Brisbane. The “California Dreaming” themed Ball was also held at the Sofitel Brisbane. The Ball was an amazing night full of fun dancing, and in particular we were able to raise money for the charity The White Cloud Foundation. Thank you to all the sponsors and to all who attended. ■ The month of August sees the return of probably the biggest event of the year for Brisbane, the Royal Queensland Show, better known as the “Ekka”.
